Chapter 16 Frank
He remembered a boom and darkness.
Am I dead? he thought.
No a voice answered. It was a women's; sweet and silky. Frank knew he had heard it before, but he couldn't picture a face.
Then why can I only see black? he wondered mentaly.
Because brave one. Your eyes are colsed
Oh.
Open them. Your friends need you.
Wait, who are you? Why are you speaking- er thinking to me?
You will soon understand. Now go. Your friends are in danger.
But-
Go and I promise your questions will be answered. Go!
Frank's eyes were forced open, and he wished he could close them.
A few feet away from him stood an ugly monster. From the waist up, she was a women who was rather beautiful, but from the waist down, she was a cobra. (Well, the body of the cobra, not the neck or head. Like a centaur.)
She had golden hair like Annabeth's and milky white skin. Her eyes were a bright blue, but they held coldness and sadness, like she had been hurt once before and it still haunted her. She gave a cruel smile which showed fangs. They had a red stain on them, which Frank guessed wasn't ketchup. Her snake-part was brown mixed with tiny golden flecks. She was truly......scary.
Frank got to his feet and noched an arrow in his bow. He pointed his weapon at her and watched as Leo, Nico, Hedge and Hazel followed suit.
Nico stepped forward, looking more brave the Frank would have managed. "What- I mean, who are you? And what do you want?"
"I am Lamia," she said with impudence. "Daughter of Poesidoen. Don't you recognise me?"
"Uh...no?"
Hazel raised here hand cautiously. "So does that mean your like Percy's sister or something?"
Lamia's eyes darkened. "You mean the powerful Perceus Jackson that killed the evil Titan Lord Kronons?"
"Yeah?"
"Then, yes. I suppose I would be his sister. Isn't that neat?"
"Shocking," Hazel agreed.
Frank tried not to burst out laughing. Percy's half-sister was ......that thing? Oh yeah, he could totally see the family resemblence.
Lamia smiled. "Now, I believe it is time for a history lesson. About myself of course. Gather around children. I promise I wont.....bite."
No one gathered. Frank wondered why she had paused there, but he didn't worry about it. He was sure it was nothing.
"Tsk tsk," Lamia said. "You are rather bad children. Oh well. I will continue my story even if you don't stand next to me. Now it all started long ago. I-"
"Could it not be so long ago?" Leo asked. "We're kinda on a quest and when you went all BOOM and stuff you made a whole on my deck. And now I'm gonna have to repair it again. And thats probably gonna take...well actually it will probably only take about an hour or two, so I guess we're ok. You may proceed."
"I choose when I may proceed!" Lamia yelled, fire litteraly in her eyes. "Not a child!"
Leo raised his hands. "Ok geez drama mama! I meant no offense."
Lamia glared at him, but she continued with her story. "Where was I? Don't answer that Son of Hephestaus I was not serious! Children these day."
Hedge snorted. "I know right?"
"Anyway. As I was saying. It all started a long, long time ago." She said looking at Leo. "I was wonce the beautiful queen of Lybian; loved by all, worshiped by many. In fact, I was so glamorous, even the lord Zues noticed me. We fell in love, and he soon became the father to our new children."
"Hold up," Frank said, his throat dry. "You're telling us that you had an .....that you and Zues had....ugh that you did IT with your own uncle?"
"Yes."
"EWWWW!" Leo screamed! "That's so nasty and wrong and ew ew ew!"
"I dont see whats so 'ew' about that," Lamia said. "It was quite enjoyable. And Zues was such an ani-"
"Thats ok!" Frank interrupted. "We really dont need to know. Like at all. Please just continue with your story and skip the whole, IT part."
"If you insist. But it was just about to get juicy."
Frank felt the vomit creep to his mouth.
"Anywhooooooo. The children we had were the most precious things I had ever seen. They're eyes were blue like mine and their noses were as cute as his. I was so happy." A sad look formed in her eyes. Tears started to form. "But then, Hera got jealous. She didn't want her husband to have affairs with other women. So she....she..." Lamia chocked up. Whatever she was trying to say was clearly paining her. "She killed my babies. My sweet, innocent kids. Then she turned me into this!" She waved her hands over her body. "A monster! And as if that wasn't bad enough, she cursed me so that I could never close my eyes and rest from the hauntting images of my children's dead bodies. My life was torture!"
Lamia took a deep breath and continued. "Once Zues saw what that women had done to me, he felt piy. So he gave me a gift. Can any of you guess what that gift was?"
"Fruitbasket?" Leo asked.
"No. Zues gave me the abiltity to rip my own eyes out so that I could take a break. Not a rest, but close enough."
"Gross." Hazel said.
"Cool!" Hedge remarked.
"From this very day, I still feel the pain from losing my children. But I have found a cure. An act I can perform to help me feel more stable and controlled." Lamia slowly walked, or slithered toward Hazel. Frank tightened his grip on his bow. Something bad was going to happen.
"To help me ease my suffering, I would do one simple thing...." She was now two feet away from Hazel.
"I would eat children." She sprung at Hazel.
Her training from Camp Jupiter kept her alive. She leaped out of the way and jabbed at the mosters side with her spear. Frank got out of his shock and started shooting arrows. Each found his target, but the monster just seemed annoyed. Leo threw fire balls, Hedge hit her in the head with a club, Nico stabbed with his sword, but she didn't seem to be getting hurt.
Hazel let out a yell and charged. Her spear dug into Lamia chest; she screamed in agony but didn't die. Hazel stood there, dumbfounded. A strike like that should of killed. But the wound was alredy healing.
Lamia pulled the spear out of her chest and laughed. "Foolish demigods! I can not be killed!"
"Say what?" Leo said.
"I remember know!" Nico said, dodging Lamia. "We can only kill her with a silver dagger that has been blessed by a priest or something!"
"Great. But we dont have any of those now do we?"
Lamia, still holding Hazel's spear, spun around and smacked Leo so hard, he nearly fell of the deck. Frank shot arrows, but she wouldn't take her attention off of Leo. She raised the spear and
"NO!" Hazel screamed. She ran from behind and jumped on the monsters back. "Get off child!" Lamia screamed but Hazel held on.
"Hazel!" Frank yelled. "Her eyes!"
Thank the Gods she understood. With one quick motion, Hazel grabbed both of Lamia's eyes in her hands and pulled them out.
Lamia growled in frustration. "Curse you child!"
Hazel jumped down, but Lamia wasn't as blind as they thought. Her hearing was still remarkable.
Faster then Frank could say 'the wheels on the bus go round and round' Lamia had grabbed Hazel's arm and poited the spear at her throaght. She looked-well tried to look without eyes- at Frank. "Farewell demigods."
And with another boom, the daughter of Poesideon and the daughter of Pluto were gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Frank sat on the deck, trying hard not to cry. Hazel was gone. And he had been so hard on her. So what if she liked Leo? It didn't mean she liked him any less.
Nico walked over to him, tears leaking out. "You ok?"
Frank shrugged.
"Leo and I both think that Lamia took Piper as well."
"But where did she take them?"
Nico shook his head. "I.....I don't know. But they're strong. They'll be able to stay alive long enough for us to find them."
Frank didn't say anything. He stared out at the sky. The sunset was beautiful. Purple pink and yellow all wrapped in one. It only made Frank feel worse. He should of been enjoying this view with Hazel...
"I was thinking," Nico said. "If Lamia did take Piper, she probably works for Gaea right?"
"I guess so." Frank mumbled, not undertanding where this was going.
"So, I think, that they were looking for something powerful that Piper owns. Something that could help Gaea. In her room, I mean"
"Like the cornicopia? It's pretty powerful."
"Maybe," Nico said, but he didn't sound like that was the answer he wanted. "But Gaea wouldn't go through all this trouble just to get a horn that sprouted food."
"I guess you right.....what about her dagger? Katoptris?"
Nico slowly nodded. "That would make sense. It can see images of the future and its pretty powerful."
Frank sighed. "Well, whatever it is, it must of been pretty important."
"Or......or maybe they didn't take anything."
"Say what?"
Nico turned to him. "Think about it. All this time, Gaea has been messing with us. It would be so like her to just trick us into thinking she'd taken something, when really she hadn't"
Frank stared at him.
Nico looked annoyed. "She probably wants us to waste our time figuring out what she was lookng for." He said it really slowly. "Blink twice if you understand."
Frank glared at him.
Nico chuckled. "Whatever Zhang. Im gonna go talk to Leo."
Frank watched him go. He tried to understand what that kid was saying, but....well he never had been that bright.
He stared at the sunset again. "Dont worry Hazel," he whispered. "I'll find you. Somehow."
