❤️Chapter - 9 - A Love Beyond Time❤️
A Love Beyond Time
The world stood eerily still, an unnatural quiet swallowing every sound. Time itself seemed frozen, the tension so thick it was suffocating. Ji-won clutched Man-hee's arm, her breath caught in her throat as she stared at Sang-woo, who stood motionless, sword poised mid-swing.
"What... what's happening?" Ji-won whispered, her voice trembling.
Man-hee narrowed her eyes, scanning their surroundings. The guests at the wedding were like statues, frozen in place, their faces etched with fear. Even the birds in the sky hung motionless. The only movement came from Man-hee, Ji-won, and Sang-woo.
"This isn't natural," Man-hee said, her voice low and steady.
Then, with a sudden crackle, time resumed. The air around them seemed to shatter like glass, and Sang-woo's blade completed its deadly arc.
"No!" Ji-won screamed.
The blade plunged into Man-hee's chest, the force knocking her backward. She gasped, her eyes wide with shock as crimson spread across her chest.
"Man-hee!" Ji-won's cry was raw and desperate.
Man-hee staggered, her legs giving way as she collapsed to the ground. Ji-won was at her side in an instant, cradling her in her arms.
"I... I'm sorry," Man-hee whispered, her voice barely audible. Her hand weakly reached up, brushing against Ji-won's tear-streaked face.
"Don't do this," Ji-won pleaded, her tears falling freely. "You can't leave me. You promised!"
Man-hee's lips trembled as she tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. Her hand slipped from Ji-won's cheek, falling lifelessly to her side.
"No, no, no!" Ji-won sobbed, shaking her gently. "Wake up! Please, wake up!"
Sang-woo stood nearby, watching the scene with cold detachment. A cruel smile tugged at his lips. "Finally," he said, his voice calm and almost bored. "First Ji-ah, now you. It's poetic, really."
Ji-won's head snapped up, her gaze filled with fury and despair. "You monster!" she screamed, her voice breaking. "How could you?!"
Sang-woo shrugged, his expression unbothered. "Because I could."
Ji-won clutched Man-hee's body tightly, her sobs echoing through the still air. The wedding guests, now freed from their frozen state, stood paralyzed with fear, unable to process the horror unfolding before them.
Sang-woo began to turn away, satisfied with his victory. "Grieve all you want," he said over his shoulder. "It won't change a thing."
Man-hee opened her eyes to find herself in a world of light and shadow, an ethereal realm that felt both familiar and alien. The air was thick with the weight of untold power, the mist swirling around her feet like ghosts of forgotten memories. The vast expanse stretched endlessly before her, a landscape that felt both serene and unnerving, as though time itself held its breath in this place.
She stood alone, her heart heavy with the burden of everything she had lost and the one person she still needed to save.
As she tried to steady herself, a presence stirred in the air. An old lady figure materialized before her, the atmosphere shifting with her arrival. The goddess who had cursed Man-hee long ago now stood before her, bathed in a light that seemed to bend around her, giving her an aura of divine authority and mystery as she pretended to be selling antique items.
Man-hee's breath caught in her chest, her body trembling with both fear and awe. The goddess was not a being of simple benevolence or wrath, but something far more complex, an entity of unfathomable power that wove the fabric of fate itself. Her very presence seemed to distort the world around them, bending reality to her will.
"So," the goddess said, her voice a soft but powerful echo that seemed to resonate from all directions. It was calm, yet filled with an ancient weight, as though it had heard the cries of countless souls across the ages. "Your journey ends here."
Man-hee's legs buckled, and she fell to her knees in the mist, the tears she thought had dried now spilling over once again. Her heart felt as though it was being ripped apart, and the raw emotion of the moment left her breathless.
"Please," she begged, her voice cracking under the strain of the words she could no longer keep silent. "Don't take me away yet. I can't leave Ji-won. She needs me."
The goddess stood motionless, her gaze steady and unreadable, as though contemplating the weight of Man-hee's plea. The world around them seemed to hold its breath, as if even the air itself was waiting for the goddess's judgment.
"And why should I grant such a request?" the goddess asked, her voice calm but carrying an undercurrent of something far deeper, something that hinted at her age-old wisdom. "Your death was ordained. Your choices led you to this moment. You defied fate, you ignored the consequences, and now you ask me to undo what has already been written in the stars?"
Man-hee's heart clenched. She wanted to scream, to shout at the unfairness of it all, but she forced herself to stay composed. She had no time for anger or self-pity. All that mattered now was Ji-won-her love, her partner, the one person whose life she could not allow to fall to the same fate that had claimed hers.
"I know I made mistakes," Man-hee continued, her voice strained but resolute. "I know my choices led me here, to this moment. But love...love is greater than any curse. Greater than any destiny. Please, I beg you, give me one more chance. One more chance to save Ji-won. She's all I have left."
The goddess said nothing for a long, excruciating moment. Her eyes glinted with a depth of knowledge that seemed to stretch across eons. It was as if she could see the very fibers of Man-hee's soul, weighing every word, every emotion. There was something calculating about her silence, but there was also a flicker of something else-a recognition, perhaps, of the purity in Man-hee's plea.
Man-hee felt a chill run through her, the very air around her growing colder, heavier. The weight of her fate seemed to press down on her with an intensity that left her breathless, and yet she refused to back down. She couldn't. Not now. Not when Ji-won's life was on the line.
"I made a promise," Man-hee said, her voice stronger now, her tears no longer just signs of despair, but of determination. "To Ji-won. I promised her that no matter what, I would always be with her. In this life, and every other life. No matter what it takes, I'll love her. I'll protect her."
The goddess's gaze softened slightly, though her face remained inscrutable. "And what will you do to keep that promise, Man-hee?" she asked, her voice a quiet murmur that seemed to echo through the very fabric of existence. "What price are you willing to pay for love, for a life that was never meant to be?"
Man-hee took a shaky breath, knowing the truth. Knowing what it would cost her to truly be with Ji-won. "I'll pay whatever price you ask," she said, her voice steady despite the emotions that roiled inside her. "I'll give up everything. My soul. My peace. My eternity. Just... please. Let me protect her. Let me stay with her."
The goddess considered her for a long time, her presence growing ever more overwhelming. For a moment, the light around them seemed to shift, casting shadows that stretched far beyond the reaches of the mist. Man-hee's heart pounded in her chest, but she held her ground, refusing to look away from the goddess who held her fate in her hands.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the goddess spoke.
"Very well," she said, her voice cold but resolute. "Your fate is yours to rewrite. I will grant your request."
Man-hee's heart leapt in her chest, her breath catching in her throat. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude and relief.
But the goddess's expression remained neutral, her eyes never leaving Man-hee's. "There is one condition," she added, her voice almost imperceptible in the vast silence that followed. "Your eternity will not be easy. You will never truly know peace, and you will be bound to your love for Ji-won in ways that will test you, challenge you. Your life will not be as it once was."
Man-hee nodded without hesitation, her resolve unwavering. "I understand. I'll bear whatever you require. I just... I just need to be with her."
The goddess's lips curled into a faint smile, though it was laced with a kind of sorrow that Man-hee couldn't place. "Then, go. Return to her. Live the life you so desire. But remember, love is a force as dangerous as it is beautiful. Do not think that it will come without its trials."
With that, the world around Man-hee shifted again. The blinding light surrounded her, and in a flash, she was pulled back into the realm of the living.
Ji-won sobbed uncontrollably, her arms wrapped tightly around Man-hee's lifeless form.
The world around her blurred, her tears distorting everything into a kaleidoscope of pain.
"Come back," she whispered, her voice hoarse. "Please, come back to me."
Then, a faint warmth began to radiate from Man-hee's body. Ji-won froze, her breath catching as a soft glow surrounded them.
"Man-hee?" she whispered, her voice trembling with hope and disbelief.
Man-hee's eyes fluttered open, her first breath a gasp. She looked up at Ji-won, her expression filled with wonder and confusion.
"Ji-won..." Man-hee murmured, her voice weak but alive.
Ji-won's tears turned to ones of joy as she cupped Man-hee's face, her hands trembling. "You're alive! I thought I'd lost you forever!"
Man-hee sat up slowly, her strength returning. She pulled Ji-won into an embrace, holding her tightly. "I told you," she whispered. "I'd never leave you."
The battle with Sang-woo was inevitable. Man-hee had returned, but their fight was far from over. The moment Sang-woo laid eyes on them, his smirk faltered. His attempts to tear them apart had failed not just once but twice, and also now, for the last time. Sang-woo stood a few steps away, his expression a mix of shock and rage. "How are you still alive?" he demanded, his voice sharp.
Man-hee gently released Ji-won, standing to face Sang-woo. Her gaze was steely, her resolve unshakable. She picked up the ceremonial sword from the ground, its blade gleaming in the fading sunlight.
"This ends now," Man-hee said, her voice firm.
Sang-woo lunged at her, his sword raised, but Man-hee met his attack head-on. Their blades clashed, the sound ringing out like thunder. The battle was fierce, their movements a blur of speed and precision.
Man-hee fought with everything she had, her determination fueled by the love she had for Ji-won. With a swift, decisive strike, she drove her sword into Sang-woo's chest.
Sang-woo staggered, his eyes wide with disbelief as he fell to his knees. Blood poured from his wound, staining the ground beneath him. He looked up at Man-hee, his lips curling into a defiant sneer. "This isn't over," he rasped before collapsing, lifeless.
Man-hee dropped the sword, her chest heaving as she turned back to Ji-won. Tears welled in her eyes as she walked over, pulling Ji-won into her arms.
"How are you here?" Ji-won asked, her voice trembling, still clinging to Man-hee as if she might vanish again.
Man-hee gave a soft, bittersweet smile, brushing a tear-streaked strand of hair from Ji-won's face. "When I was... on the other side," she began, her voice carrying the weight of her ordeal, "I couldn't let it end like this. I begged the goddess for one more chance. I couldn't leave you behind."
Ji-won's breath hitched. "And she... she let you come back?"
Man-hee hesitated, her expression darkening slightly. "Not without a cost. I bargained with her. I swore I'd give her what she wanted in return for my life... and the chance to save you."
Ji-won's brows furrowed, concern creeping into her eyes. "What did you promise her?"
Man-hee's voice was steady, though there was a faint tremor beneath her resolve. "I vowed to live forever if that's what it takes-to love you in every generation, in every life you live, to protect you even if it means losing my own peace." Her eyes shimmered with emotion. "No matter what it costs me, I'll always choose you."
Tears spilled freely down Ji-won's cheeks as she cupped Man-hee's face. "You did all that... for me?" Her voice cracked with both sorrow and gratitude.
"I did it because I couldn't imagine eternity without you," Man-hee murmured, her own tears brimming. "And because I love you beyond time, beyond death. That's a love worth any price."
Ji-won let out a sob as she pulled Man-hee into a fierce embrace. "You came back for me," she whispered, her voice breaking with relief and devotion.
"Always," Man-hee replied softly, holding Ji-won as if she was her entire world. "And I always will, no matter the cost."
Above them, the stars seemed to pulse with life, as though bearing witness to a love so profound that even the gods themselves could not deny its power.
