Chapter 6- Beginnings
A/N Gosh, sorry for the long wait (if anyone is actually keeping with this book-) I'm trying to update more frequently!
"What if you play around with the yarn as if you're nervous? Since you're supposed to like Theseus?" Satin asked.
"It's not a modern-day crush story," Chenille rolled her eyes at her twin.
"I wasn't hearing you suggest anything," Satin scoffed.
"Guys, can we just, finish this?" I asked, trying not to sound annoyed. Branch was obviously great at acting, but the rest of us? Not so much.
"Ok from the top then," Guy said.
Mental sigh.
After school...
I wandered into the auditorium, which was empty as usual. I went backstage to a little area my art teacher showed me a couple months ago. You could watch both the stage and the audience at the same time. It's for audio directors or something. Although I was an artist at heart, I loved music. Musicals were an inordinate way to express that (as long as the story wasn't cliché), and a great source of inspiration.
Inattentively, I began humming one of (yes his, don't ask) Branch's latest hits, "Can't Stop The Feeling!" Ever since Barb played it, it's been resurfacing in my brain, as if I couldn't get away from-
"Why are you here?" A voice hissed behind me.
"HOLY-" I jumped around, holding my hands out as if the person was going to attack me. Which he wasn't.
"What do you mean 'What am I doing here?'" I frowned at Branch, rolling my eyes. "I was here first!"
"...Fair enough," he unclenched his jaw. "I just thought no one would be here..."
"Does Branch Timberlake need his alone time too?" I asked genuinely, but my voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Well what would you know?" He muttered under his breath. I sighed, pulling out my cell phone.
"I'd better-"
"Whoa whoa whoa! If your gonna snap a pic, you gotta tell me first!" Branch smoothed his hair down. "Ok, I guess-
He stopped, staring at my probably beet-red face. No not blushing.
Pure annoyance.
"Sir, I have never met such an arrogant, self-centered boy- scratch that- person, in my whole life! I was just checking the time! This world doesn't revolve around you for your information!" I wasn't even bothered to keep my voice down. "Come to Earth, will ya?"
I stormed out of the room before he could even react.
Yeah, I was overreacting, but I was so done with him. Did he really think I was taking a photo of him? How much more proud can a person be?
That afternoon...
"I'm hearing chemistry."
I almost choked on my hot cocoa, coughing it out. "I'm sorry, did I hear you right?"
"Yeah. I'm hearing chemistry," Barb repeated nonchalantly, sipping her drink, elbow rested on the countertop. She didn't even bother to look up.
"Are you even on the same planet as me?" I questioned, hiding my exasperation. "I practically ha..." I faltered, closing my mouth. I had never really hated someone before, and I candidly didn't want to admit it. "He's a jerk."
"But you know what they sa-ayyy," singsonged Barb, smirking.
"What?" I asked blankly.
"There's a fine line between hate and love," she snickered, unable to drink her hot cocoa.
I rolled my eyes, smiling at Barb's antics. I could never really be mad at her, no matter how annoying her statements were. "Oh please, then I'm not on the line."
"Soooooo...love?" Barb laughed.
I couldn't help but laugh along with her.
"But what happened to Creek then?" Barb cocked her head.
"Nothing. He's still top of my list," I replied. I realized I had to work on his scrapbook covers soon, I didn't want to keep him waiting.
At home...
I plopped my backpack in my room, not bothering to put it in its spot. I unlatched my scrapbooking set and grabbed scissors and glue. "Alright, ideas?" I asked myself aloud. Yoga...is calming. So perhaps hands in Namaste pose? Or a peace sign? Nature landscapes? Creek doing Vriksasana?
I set down the scissors, and put away my set. I had scrapbook block. Fantastic.
I pulled out my cell phone and started playing some upbeat music, hoping to brighten my demoralizing mood. Because I need a better mood if I'm gonna survive tomorrow.
After school the next day...
"I'm not sure I'm ready for this," I groaned. "I forgot why I ever agreed to do this again."
"You have to!" Barb exclaimed. "How can anyone turn down an offer like this??" She raised an eyebrow.
"Maybe if I did, it'd get inside that thick head of his that everyone is NOT his paparazzi fangirl," I rolled my eyes.
We came into view of Harmony Park, which was vacant, unlike usual. No kids in sight. Instead, snulight drifted through the trees- which the branches were arranged specifically- and gave an ethereal feel to the place. It was almost...alluring.
"Poppy! There you are!" A man said, ushering me away from Barb to a table setup. I looked over my shoulder at Barb, whose face said she knew as much as me- nothing. Then a lady had me sit down for make-up and other things like costumes. Well, here we go!
A couple minutes later...
"Wow, I can hardly recognize you Popcorn, but you look sick!" Barb gave me a rocker sign, pulling out her guitar. She said she'd quietly watch from the sidelines, practicing her songs.
"Thank for being here Barb," I avowed, smiling embarrassedly. I stared down at my outfit, which was a magenta and yellow tie-dye tank top and a simple lavender skirt. A purple bracelet rested on my left hand, and my usual headband was replaced with purple crown-like headpiece. I had lavender leg warmers and heart-shaped glittery sunglasses. Not a far fetch from my usual clothing, but much more flashy.
Barb stuck her tongue out and grinned back. I really was lucky to have her here.
"There you are," a familiar voice mumbled behind me. I spun around to be face to face with the pop star himself, Branch Timberlake. I was taken aback by his clothing, which matched mine. Heart-shaped sunglasses, a glittery golden vest on a blue shirt, and cream shorts. He also had donned a green bracelet, a clip-on rainbow earring, and a purple head-worn microphone.
"Yeah I'm here, not late last I checked," I retorted, unable to keep in my sourness at him. "Where's the rest of your gang?"
"We don't need them for today, just you and me," he said, gently grabbing my elbow and guiding me to the open area on the sidewalk. I flinched at his touch, but I felt heat creeping over my arm and my face. I mentally scolded myself for falling for a simple gesture so easily, what's wrong with me?
"Have you read through the plan yet?" Branch asked me, letting go. I glanced up at him.
"Um, I didn't get one?" I waited for a sigh of annoyance, or something, but instead he just walked over to a guy and asked for a spare copy, which he pulled out of his backpack. Then Branch approached me again, handing it to me.
"It's simple, the main obstacle will be learning the dance moves," Branch stretched his hands.
"Oh please, I can dance," I frowned. It didn't look to hard and besides, Barb and I loved singing and dancing when we were younger. We don't do it as much but we still love it.
Branch took a deep breath. "The speaker will play a simple beat to keep the pace, the music will be added later, so it's not as easy as it looks," he warned.
I had to admit, I wasn't as annoyed with him right now as I usually was. He was being rather...normal.
As normal as filming a probably-future-viral-music-video can get.
I watched him tune his guitar, and he brushed his black locks out of his face. Again I felt heat in my cheeks! I pressed my hands into them, willing my cheeks to cool down. Fine, I'll admit he's cute, but I am not going to fall for him. Simple as that. Besides I had Creek, do I need a mega-popular music star?
"Alright, let's start," Branch announced, setting his guitar down and grabbing my wrist and walking over to the cameras.
My face really needs to stop betraying me.
A/N OooOoOooO Poppy is your face betraying you or revealing true colors? XD
I feel like the closer I get to Broppy moments, the more Broppy I want to add into the future XD
Peace out!
