Needles Are The Worst

"Mal it's okay. It's a little poke and then it's all done," Ava told the toddler as she tried her best to stay calm and not let her emotions out again.

"No! I no wan id! I no wan id!" The young girl cried out as she tried to push the doctor away. "Hey kid, it's okay. I know it sucks to get needles in ya, but you'll feel so much better once it's over trust me," Lola told the toddler as she wanted to help.

"Id gonna huw!" Mal cried out as she looked at Lola who just closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm herself down then opened them again. "I know but if you let them poke you I'll get you um... what do you want?" Lola asked the young girl as she felt bad that she wasn't around to help out with her sister now that she knew she had one.

"Baba an owa!" Mal called out. "What?" Lola asked out loud, making Evie roll her eyes as she looked at her new sister. "Ava gives Mal soda in a bottle. It's so unhealthy and bad for her," Evie told Lola who just nodded.

"Yeah but Mal loves it and it makes her feel safe plus it's all she drinks now," Carlos told Lola who just nodded again as she looked at the scared little girl and smiled a little.

"Alright kid if you let them poke you then we'll get you a bottle and fill it with soda. How does that sound?" Lola told the toddler who smiled as she nodded.

"Otay! Bu I wan mama!" Mal called out as she looked up and reached towards Ava who just nodded as she sat down by Mal and placed her in her lap.

"Alright pup you ready to be a brave big girl!" Carlos told his baby sister in his best confident voice, making Mal giggle as she nodded. "Yeah!" Mal exclaimed confidently as she looked up at Ava who just gave her a fake smile.

Ava hated having to fake it, but she knew that Mal needed to see her smile in order to feel safe and to allow the doctor to stick the needle in for the blood transfusion that she needed.

"Mama no we go," Mal told Ava who smiled for real this time as she pulled Mal closer. "I promise Mal I won't let go. Okay now close your eyes and think about dragons, purple, and strawberries," Ava told the toddler who giggled as she did what Ava said.

She stopped giggling though when she felt the needle go in as she immediately opened her eyes and started sobbing.

"Aw Mal it's okay. You did so good. We're all so proud of you. I know that hurts, but it's okay. Now you just have to let it stay in for a little bit and you'll feel so much better," Ava told the toddler as she rocked her little, but made sure to be careful not to accidentally pull the needle out that was in her arm and pumping in the blood.

"Yeah you're such a brave big girl! Good job Mal. High five!" Evie told the toddler as she held her hand up and Mal smiled a little as she high fived her back with her other hand. "Baba!" The small girl cried out as she pointed to Lola who had promised her a bottle if she let them poke her again.

Lola just laughed a little as she looked at the little girl who was now smiling and starting to look better now that she was getting the transfusion. "Alright chill out I got to find a bottle first," Lola playfully told the toddler as she had just joined the family and still didn't know where Mal's stuff was all kept.

"Here this is her bottle, just fill it with coke that's her favorite," Ava told Lola as she pulled out the bottle from Mal's diaper bag. Normally Ava was against the whole bottle thing, but right now Mal was suffering enough that she honestly didn't care anymore. If the bottle provided comfort to Mal then so be it.

Lola just nodded as she took the bottle from Ava and filled it with a can of coke that was in the mini fridge that Ava had brought. "Alright kid, here's your baba," Lola told Mal as she handed her the bottle, making Mal's tiny face light up as she reached for the bottle.

"Baba! Baba! Baba!" Mal called out excitedly, making everyone else in the room laugh as they couldn't help it. They loved seeing Mal happy, especially right now while she was suffering.

"Hi there Mal, how are you doing?" The nurse asked the small girl as she came back in a few hours later to take the needle out. "Owie!" Mal called out as she held her arm up and pointed to the needle.

"Aw I know but I'm here to take the owie out. Now what kind of bandaid do you want?" The nurse asked the little girl who smiled as she found a purple dragon bandaid. "Dis! I wan dis! Pupwel an dwagin! Woaw!" The young girl told the nurse making her and the others laugh as the nurse nodded.

"Alright purple dragons it is. Okay now close your eyes. Alright ready one, two, three," the nurse told the toddler as she ripped off the sticky thing that was holding the needle in and then pulled out the needle making Mal start sobbing.

"Aw Mal it's okay. It's all over now. And look you got the purple dragon bandaid," Carlos told his baby sister as he tried to calm her down.

"Pupwel dwagin?" The young girl asked as she looked at her arm and smiled a little. "Yeah Mal you got the purple dragons," Evie told her baby sister who stopped sobbing as she pointed to her bandaid.

"Yay!" The young girl squealed out as she kept staring at her new bandaid and playing with it until she started to feel sleepy.

"Aw kid are you sleepy?" Lola playfully asked Mal as she watched her rub her eyes as she kept yawning. Mal just nodded as she looked at Lola, Evie, and Carlos.

"I wan you!" Mal cried out as she reached for the three of them, making them laugh as they joined Ava and Mal on the bed and before they knew it the four of them were passed out.

Everyone except for Ava who couldn't bring herself to sleep. She had been having trouble sleeping lately because she was always too worried about Mal and what if something happened while she was sleeping.

The night Mal had been rushed to the hospital a few days before her diagnosis Ava had been sleeping. In fact it was Caitlin who even noticed that something was wrong with her. Ava hadn't even noticed anything and she had gone to sleep like normal that night.

Ava just couldn't bring herself to sleep especially while she was the only one up right now. And Mal was still pretty sick right now. She had just had the transfusion, but they still didn't know if that had helped with anything yet or not.

"Hey I'm back, how is she doing," April asked as she entered the room a few minutes later and sat down on a chair.

"She's doing a lot better now that she finally got that transfusion. We're just waiting on the doctor to come back with the results on whether it's actually helping or not though. Oh how did your interview go," Ava told April who sighed as she knew that what Ava said was technically good news, but she still hated that Mal was suffering like this.

"Well that's good I guess. The interview went well. They said they'll call me and let me know soon. I really hope I get the job. We can really use the money. Treatment is insanely expensive. I've been doing the numbers," April told Ava who just sighed as she looked at the sleeping toddler who was cuddled up on Evie, Lola, and Carlos who were also sleeping as well.

"Yeah I know. I hate how expensive treatment is. I want to give her the best care we can, but everything is just so expensive. I've even been debating on posting again on Youtube, but posting about Mal and stuff this time. I don't want to be considered using her though. We just really need the money and I feel like we're running out of options," Ava told April as she hated that she was even considering this, but right now the truth was they could make a lot of money with it and they were struggling right now.

"You want to start like an advocacy channel?" April asked Ava who just sighed again. "I don't really want to, but I think we're out of options. I'm still having to pay college tuition so I can graduate and get a good job that will pay well, provide for the family on the little that I do have, and pay for her crazy expensive treatment. I was struggling even before everything hit the fan," Ava told April who just nodded as she knew what Ava was talking about.

Even if she managed to get that second job it still wouldn't be enough money. Not even with Lola and her money either. "What's going on?" The two older ones heard making them look up as they saw that Evie was up.

"Oh Evie you're up. Nothings going on, we're just waiting on her results. What are you doing up it's late," Ava told her sister who just started crying.

"I couldn't sleep, I heard everything. Are we not going to have enough to pay for her treatment because I can help! I have money from my clothing business. I can work more to get more money and I can get a real job! I want to help," Evie cried out.

"Evie come here. You already help us out a lot. And your clothing business money is enough already it's okay. We'll figure it out. You don't need a job right now," April told her sister who just kept crying as she had been holding in her emotions again, but now that Mal was sleeping they were all just pouring out.

"How will you afford treatment though," Evie asked as she knew that Ava had been struggling with money for a while now, but she thought that having April around they would have more money especially since April was trying to get a second job and they also now had Lola and her job as a photographer however it was obvious that was far from the truth.

"We'll figure it out. Don't worry Evie. Now just go back to sleep alright it's late and you have school in the morning," Ava told Evie who was going to argue when she realized that Ava was stressed enough and didn't need her making it worse.

Once Evie had fallen back to sleep the door opened as the doctor entered. "So is it working?" Ava asked as soon as the doctor entered the room, making the doctor sigh as she looked at her chart.

"Well the good news is that the transfusion seems to be working and her levels are starting to look like how they did before. However I do want to talk about something else that I noticed," the doctor told Ava who just looked at April as they both shared a look of concern as they didn't know what was going on, but they didn't think it was good.
