Chapter 10 - Exploration Time

Stevie rubbed her eyes as she woke up. At first, she felt like her usual cheery self... Until the memory of the past days events washed over her like a tidal wave.

That's when she noticed something else. She was holding... A hoodie? It wasn't her hoodie. It was a black hoodie with the image of a red hawk on the back of it.

As Stevie tried to think of the hoodie's owner, there was a knock at her door. She quickly put the hoodie on and hurried to answer. Daiko!

"Hey Steb." Daiko was clearly forcing his smile,"Can I... Come in?"

"Oh, of course you can-"

Stevie bad barely finished as Daiko hurried in and slammed the door behind him, grabbing onto Stevie and just... Sobbing.

She rubbed his back and played with his hair, eventually calming him down enough to talk.

"Dai? Are you okay?" Stevie asked him, her voice soft.

"Just... Just a bad dream." Daiko sniffled.

Stevie held Daiko close as he rubbed his eyes. Stevie gave him a reassuring smile before she opened the door once more and they made their way to the kitchen.

Stevie sat Daiko down and began preparing some coffee. Not just for her and Daiko but Ray, she knew Ray liked coffee.

"Thanks Stevie." Daiko smiled over at her.

"It's no problem, Dai." Stevie told him as she got out some cups.

Daiko kept smiling as Stevie tapped her fingers, waiting for the click of the coffee machine. Soon, the pair were joined by the remaining students, all looking a bit worse for wear... Especially Scott.

He was just disheveled. His hair a mess, bags forming under his eyes and a permanently shaken expression. Scorpius rubbed his back as they sat together and Dimitri tried soothing him, at least they had each other.

Stevie sighed as she poured the hot liquid into the cups, leaving herself with four cups of coffee... She wasn't good at maths, okay?

"Hiya everybody!" Monoyagi popped up on the counter.

"Holy shit-" Stevie jumped, nearly dropping her cup before sighing,"Monoyagi, do you have to keep doing that?"

"Of course, it's fun!" She hummed,"But that's not what I'm here for."

"Well? The hell are you here for then?" Ray rolled his eyes.

"Since you all did so well during that trial... I've decided to give you all a prize!" Monoyagi cheered.

"A... P-prize?" Sancia asked shakily, a brow raised.

"Rewarding us for finding a killer... How interesting." Jeff nodded slowly.

"What is it? Is it an escape? Is it?" Akira jumped excitedly.

"Nope! I've opened up the second floor!" Monoyagi announced.

"Hang on, there's a second floor?" Kirari questioned.

"Did you not see the staircase?" Terishi asked.

"Well, yeah but it was closed off." Kirari shrugged.

"So... We can go upstairs now?" Ash questioned.

"Yeppers!" Monoyagi grinned,"Go on then, go explore!"

And with that... She was gone. Stevie always wondered how she did it, disappeared just like that.

"Well? What are we waiting for?" Daiko got up,"Let's go explore that second floor!"

"Do we have to? Can't I just go back to bed?" Jay rested her head on the table.

"Miss Young, you can't sleep all day. Let us all explore the second floor together." Dimitri urged her.

With a groan, Jay got up and the ground made their way to the staircase by the bedrooms. The barricades were now gone and it was completely open, as if the barricades were never there.

Stevie smiled and grabbed Ray's wrist, pulling him up the stairs with her as everyone seemed to follow suit. At the top they stopped as everybody else around them dispersed.

"Well then, ma chére, where shall we start?" Ray asked her.

"Hm... That way!" Stevie pointed as she walked forward.

Ray nodded and followed her. On the way, they walked past a pair of toilets and approached a purple door with an anchor on the side. Stevie eagerly pushed it open to reveal a room filled with various floatation devices, along with two doors. One pink and one blue. Inside was also Kirari and Ash, stood by a shelf of floats

"Oh, hey Stevie, Ray." Kirari nodded to them,"Can you believe it? This school has a pool!"

"Is that so?" Ray turned to the doors before noticing a camera and... A machine gun!?

"Oh, I see you've noticed... That." Ash shuffled uncomfortably.

"The hell is there a gun just there?" Ray shook his head,"Oi, rejected plush toy!"

"You rang?" Monoyagi appeared beside him.

"What's that there for." Ray pointed.

"Oh that? That's to stop filthy perverts from sneaking into the locker rooms of the opposite sex. This is a high school." Monoyagi explained,"I do need to find a new arrangement for Jeff and Yūrei if they aren't comfortable with this... Eh, thoughts for another day."

"I see.* Stevie nodded slowly before grabbing the handle of the female locker room door. It didn't budge.

"Oh, that's another thing. You can only unlock the door to your changing room with your handbook." Monoyagi told them,"Only a girls can open a girl's and the same goes for the boys."

"But couldn't someone just give their handbook to someone so they can get in?" Ash asked.

Monoyagi gasped,"I never thought of something as horrible as that happening! That's it! New rule, as of right now, loaning your student handbook to another student is strictly prohibited. There!"

"I wasn't going to do anything like that anyway." Ray shrugged, using his handbook to open the boys locked room.

Stevie watched Monoyagi disappear before doing the same. It was a pretty standard locker room inside with obviously lockers and a bench or two. On the wall, she also noted the picture of some boy band on the wall, Stevie never listened to their music.

As she opened the door to the pool itself, she heard a splash and yelling.

"Akira!" Jeff bobbed up and down in the water.

"Oops, sorry!" Akira laughed, leaning against the lifeguard chair.

"I see you two are getting along." Stevie chuckled as Ray walked over as well.

Jeff shook their head and pulled themselves out of the pool, their clothes drenched and water dripping from them.

"If you would all excuse me, I'm going to change." Jeff grumbled as they left.

Stevie looked around the pool but there wasn't really anything of note so her and Ray quickly left. They found another classroom or two as they walked the halls but soon came across a large red door.

The pair entered only to find a massive library. The walls were lined with shelves full of books, there was a desk and chair to read at, another desk with an old laptop and a coffee machine. They also found Jay, Dimitri and Yūrei inside.

Stevie immediately approached Jay who shoved a book back into the shelf.

"Quite aggressive, don't like the book?" Stevie raised a brow.

"It's my book." Jay mumbled, arms crossed.

"You wrote a book?" Stevie asked her.

"A few, actually." Jay nodded,"It's not a big deal."

"Yeah, it is. That's so cool!" Stevie smiled.

Jay sighed and patted her head,"Don't you have investigating to do or something?"

"Oh- Right." Stevie walked over to the desk and rubbed her finger along it.

There was a visible layer of dust on the desk. How odd... She did find a Yagicoin and slipped it into her pocket. Then the other desk, more dust and... A letter addressed to Hope's Peak Academy.

"It was covered in dust when I found it." Dimitri spoke up,"Let's open it."

"But... We shouldn't open other people's mail without their permission." Stevie shook her head.

"Miss Hendrix, I'm a butler. I do this sort of thing all the time, this could be important." Dimitri told her.

Stevie sighed and opened the letter. Inside... It said that Hope's Peak Academy was closed. But- But how could that be? They were here right now.

"Hm." Ray took the letter from her and read it over again,"This letter could be at least a year old. It's most likely that the Mastermind took over the abandoned school on order for them to do this."

"Could this be, I don't know, related to what's happening right now?" Stevie asked.

"It could well be." Dimitri nodded with a sigh,"But that's all the more reason to try and figure out the Mastermind'd Motive."

"Yeah!" Stevie smiled.

"There's also this." Yūrei spoke up, walking over with the laptop,"But I've tried and it won't turn on."

Ray took the laptop and pressed multiple buttons. Nothing happened.

"It's broken." Ray shook his head.

"I think that's everything, let's go back to the dining hall. Okay?" Stevie looked around, her hand rubbing against Ray's.

The pair made eye contact and Ray took her hand as they headed down to the ground floor once more as Jay rolled her eyes at them.
