Chapter 10 - Strength and Weakness
"We've already searched this place top to bottom! What are you trying to pull, missy?" Taka pointed at Kyoko.
"I'd like you to examine the victim's body, one more time." Kyoko stated,"Be sure to examine the entire body very carefully. Take your time."
Tsuki blinked, "Sorry?"
She thought she heard wrong.
"Examine her... Carefully? Like using our hands? Nowaynowaynowaynoway!" Hifumi laughed.
"It's... Probably best if I don't run my hands all over a dead girls body." Taka shook his head.
"It's not that I'm creeped out or anything. It's just... Based on religious grounds, y'know?" Hiro agreed.
"Very well, I'll do it." Sakura volunteered.
"B-but you're a girl. You shouldn't have to touch a dead body. Just let one of the boys do it." Hina sighed.
"No, it's okay. I think Chihiro would rather have a girl examine her. So leave this to me." Sakura sighed, walking over to Chihiro's body.
"Sakura." Hina shook her head.
"What is this, some secret girl-on-girl action? Is that what you two are about?" Genocide Jill giggled.
"That's not it at all! Stop screwing around!" Hina pointed.
"Okay, here I go... I'm sorry Chihiro, please excuse the intrusion." Sakura put her hands together in a brief prayer before quietly beginning to examine the body.
"Be sure to check her entire body, and I believe wr will solve this particular mystery." Kyoko added.
"Her entire body..? I know you say that but..." Sakura froze, What-? This is... What does this m-Huaaah!"
"What is it?" Tsuki raised a brow, she had a pretty good idea though.
"Not possible... It's not possible! T-this girl is... A boy!" Sakura told them
"Ah, I see.. So this 'she' is actually a 'he..interesting. thank you for confirming this fact... WHAAAAATTTT?!" Hifumi yelled.
"You're joking, right?" Hiro blinked.
"I wouldn't joke about this!" Sakura shook her head.
"I wouldn't joke about this!" Sakura shook her head.
"T-then... Then it's true!?" Taka questioned.
"So... Chihiro was a guy." Akira nodded slowly.
"Hm? Oh what, you guys didn't know? Heck, knew right off the bat! Chihiro Fujisaki was totally a guy!" Monokuma laughed.
"T-then... He was a crossdresser? Now I'm REALLY on fire! I wish had killed him!" Genocide Jill stated.
"Hey." Tsuki pointed.
"So that's what Kyoko wanted to show everyone, huh? Interesting. Phuhu! Yes, that certainly does make things more exciting! Now let's ride this wave of excitement back to the courtroom and get back on the trail!" Monokuma announced.
The group exchanged looks before they all headed back to the trial room.
"Ahem! I do apologise for keep ing you all waiting. Now then, let's resume with the class trial. We've all just learned of the shocking revelation that Chihiro is actually a boy! Let's pick up from there." Monokuma nodded.
"Yes, well... I don't know his reason for hiding it but the fact is, Chihiro was not a girl, but a boy." Kyoko then looked at Tsuki, Which you already knew, correct?"
"What?" Tsuki blinked, how did Kyoko know?
"You knew about Chihiro's secret." She confirmed," But you chose to hide it to protect him."
Tsuki looked at Kyoko and crossed her arms,"He trusted me, as I did him."
"Which is why believe that you're innocent."
"That makes her innocent?" Mondo rolled her eyes.
"Is that not what I said?" Kyoko raised a brow.
"Whatever." Mondo looked away from her.
"As I was saying, this means he would have no problem gaining access to the boys locker room." Kyoko explained.
"Assuming his handbook did, in fact, list his gender as male... Then yes, that would be true." Byakuya nodded.
"Of course his handbook said he was a boy! He dressed like a girl but he was a boy through and through." Monokuma butted in.
"So then, there should be no issue with Akira's initial assertion... The victim was killed in the boys locker room and was later moved to the girls locker room. And the killer could've easily used Sayaka or Junko's handbook to get into the girls locker room." Kyoko continued.
"So Chihiro really was killed in the boys locker room?" Taka questioned.
"I still don't understand the motive for moving rhe body... But yes it does seem plausible." Kyoko sighed.
"Well... I must admit, I did find it rather odd..." Byakuya admitted,"I knew he felt a little... Off. There was a certain incongruity to his 'female' body."
"This is the most titillating situation!" Jill laughed.
"So now everything has been connected, all the mysteries have finally become clear." Byakuya sighed
"Okay well, connected or clear or whatever. We still think you're the killer, remember?" Hina rolled her eyes.
"Hmhm, very interesting. This has become very interesting indeed." Byakuya hummed.
"Ah... He's off in his own little world." Hifumi sighed.
"What about you, Akira? After everything we've learned, do you still think Byakuya's the killer?" Kyoko questioned.
"Well, without a doubt Byakuya's the one that made Chihiro's death look like Genocide Jack did it." Akira crossed her arms, "But... But I... think he might not actually be the killer after all."
"What? But didn't you accuse him in the first place?" Hifumi raised a brow
"He just seems to be too... Easygoing about all this. Like he's enjoying us solving this mystery." Akira sighed,"The way he's acting, it makes it seem like it doesn't have anything to do with him."
"And you think that might be because it doesn't have anything to do with him?" Celeste asked.
"Plus, the evidence left behind was a little too... How do out it? Overt." Akira stated,"He consciously chose to use the extension cord, knowing it could connect him to the murder. At least, that's how I see it..."
Byakuya stayed quiet, not looking up from the ground.
"And Byakuya, when you found out the murder took place in the boys locker room, it seemed to rattle you." Akira pointed out,"And then again when you found out Chihiro was actually a guy. If you really were the killer, that stuff wouldn't have had any effect on you."
"So that's your thinking, huh? Well it bothers me that you don't have more concrete reasons, but... It's fine. I'll mark it correct, for the time being." Byakuya rolled his eyes.
"Mark it as... Correct?" Hina raised a brow.
"She's right. I'm not the culprit. I just... Happened to come across the corpse in the girls locker room and decided to alter it." Byakuya explained.
"Are you fucking with us right now?" Mondo pointed at him.
"No, I am not.." He took a brief pause and sighed,"Effing with you right now. I'm telling you the truth."
"Well I find it very hard to believe!" Taka pointed.
"Go ahead, find it very hard to believe. You're free to be executed along with the rest with us." Byakuya shrugged.
"If you're really telling the truth then... Why? Why'd you do that to his body?" Hina questioned.
"My reasons hardly matter right now. Uncovering the culprit is much more important, wouldn't you say? Now then... If it wasn't me, who was it?" Byakuya pointed.
"W-well, I don't think can say for sure without talking about it a little more." Akira answered.
"We're seriously going to keep going? We're all good, aren't we? I thought it was clear it was Byakuya." Hiro groaned.
"No, I'm with Akira. If there's any doubt whatsoever, we need to explore every possibility." Ky oko shook her head, Because if we're wrong, we all die here."
"That's true. Very well then... I'm with you too." Celeste agreed.
"Damn, straight! Count me in!" Hiro nodded vigorously.
"Do you not have a mind of your own?!" Taka pointed.
"Of course I do! What am I, an ant or something?" Hiro pointed back.
"Anywho, let's discuss this all as a group one more time. We still have time to make our decision." Tsuki leaned against her podium.
"That's very true." Sakura agreed.
"Our lives are on the line." Hina nodded.
"Excellent! Then shall we resume our game of hide-and-seek?" Byakuya raised a brow.
"Isn't there a single clue that might lead us to who did it?" Sakuea sighed.
"Well, clues are one thing but... Did nobody get a look at the killer?" Taka questioned.
"I'm sure if someone daw the killer they would've said something by now." Hiro nodded.
"Perhaps someone saw the victim at some point. Even that might be enough for now." Sakura looked around.
"Yeah, all we need right now is more new info." Hina agreed.
"It's over, it's all over!" Hiro sighed, "You wanna know who saw the victim? The killer and the killer only!"
"Hang on, believe someone did see the victim before he was murdered. What do you think Celeste?" Tsuki crossed her arms.
"Now that you mention it, yes. I did see him." Celeste nodded.
"Huh? Really?" Hifumi raised a brow.
"Oh, but I suppose only Tsuki knows about this. The rest of you had no idea, did you? That is why you're all making such ugly noises." Celeste smiled.
"Whatever! Just hurry up and tell us!" Taka pointed.
"It was last night, right before nighttime I saw Chihiro... In the dormitory warehouse." Celeste explained,"I saw him stuffing a track jacket into a duffel bag and then, assume, he headed off to exercise."
"A track jacket and a duffel bag? But we didn't see any of that at the crime scene." Taka remembered.
"It seems likely that the culprit destroyed them to get rid of any evidence." Sakura stated.
"And that's when he said some thing that struck me as rather odd... Chihiro told me he was in a hurry. But why would he be in a hurry? Only if someone was waiting for him, should think." Celeste explained further.
"So Mr Fujisaki was in his way to meet with someone and then they were going to work out together?" Hifumi raised a brow.
"But Hina and always invited him to join us to exercise plenty of times and he always declined." Sakura tilted her head.
"Probably cause he was afraid you'd find out the secret he was hiding, right?" Hiro told them.
"Which means that conversely, he must've trusted this person who he was meeting very much. Enough so that he was willing to risk his secret being revealed." Celeste nodded.
"Uhuhu, what a marvelous friendship. Genocide Jill giggled.
"The point is, whoever he met up with is the culprit, right? So we just gotta figure it out who it was!" Hina pointed.
"But knowing what we know, I can't even guess." Akira sighed.
"No, you already have what you need to make the connection." Kyoko explained.
"Huh?" Akira blinked.
"You know who the killer is." Kyoko shrugged.
"S-seriously?!" Taka gasped.
"W-who is it? Who's the killer?!" Mondo pointed.
"Think back to the track jacket and duffle bag the killer dis posed of." Kyoko began, Focus on the details of these items and it should become obvious who was waiting for him."
"Are you sure about that?" Celeste hummed,"You really think we can figure out who did it based on two pieces of evidence we don't have?"
"What, you wanna track down fingerprints or something?" Hifumi rolled his eyes.
"Even if we had the equipment, we wouldn't know how to use it." Taka told them.
"As was noted, the evidence is already gone. There's nothing to get fingerprints from." Byakuya reminded them.
"Maybe, but we can make certain inferences, if we just take the time to talk it out." Kyoko sighed.
"Easy for you to say" Hina sighed, But fine - Celeste, did you notice anything special about the bag or jacket?"
"The bag was... Just a normal duffel bag from the warehouse. All the bags in there are the same so can't imagine what would make that one special." Celeste spoke.
"Well, if I remember right, there was a decent variety of tracksuits to choose from... Do you think there might be some connection between the curlpri and Chihiro's jacket?" Sakura raised a brow.
"Perhaps. Let's explore that and talk a little more about the jacket he took." Kyoko crossed her arms,"First of all we know where Chihiro was headed. He was on his way to exercise. So next we have to ask... Why did he choose the specific tracksuit he did?"
"What do you mean by 'specific tracksuit"?" Byakuya asked ber.
"I got it! He picked that tracksuit because... It matched the one the culprit was wearing!" Taka laughed.
"So what you're saying is... The killer was wearing the same blue tracksuit as him?" Mondo raised a brow.
Tsuki turned her head to face Mondo straight away... No one said the colour of the tracksuit... Right?
"Hang on, Mondo. What did you just say?" Akira raised a brow, noticing Tsuki's reaction
"Huh? What'd I say?" Mondo asked.
"When Celeste testified not long ago, she said that Chihiro had a track jacket. She never said anything about the colour. So why did you say Chihiro's blue tracksuit?" Tsuki pointed.
"Hey, Celeste. What colour was Chiriho's jacket?" Byakuya raised a brow.
"As a matter of fact. It was blue." Celeste recalled.
"And did you tell anyone that before the trial?" Tsuki turned.
"The only one I told about any of this was you." Celeste shrugged.
"Then Mondo, how did you know what colour Chihiro's tracksuit was?" Sakura asked him.
"B-Because just- I-"
"I'm s-sure he saw the clothes at some point during the investigation!" Taka defended.
"No, that can't be it. The bag and clothes were surely disposed of by the time we started our investigation." Kyoko explained.
"Then the only reason he could have known what colour the tracksuit was... Is if he saw Cherry with it before he died! That's the only possiblity." Genocide Jill concluded.
"Cherry? Are you talking about Chihiro?" Tsuki blinked.
"So, how 'bout it? Did you see the tracksuit or didn't you?!" Genocide Jill pointed her scissors at him.
"J-just by chance! I just happened to see it last night. He walked past me, he was carrying the tracksuit in his hands." Mondo nodded.
"No, that can't be it either. According to Celeste's testimony, when Celeste noticed it, Chihiro made a point if making sure the jacket was completely in the bag." Akira explained,"If you just ran into him briefly, you couldn't possibly have seen what colour the tracksuit was."
"Gh! Well I-" Mondo tried to excuse himself.
"It appears you have dug your own grave." Kyoko smirked.
"Perhaps, but you gave him the shovel, did you not? That's why you said what you did. Focus on the tracksuit and it'll be obvious who he met with? What a bunch of nonsense." Byakuya scoffed.
"Ah, now I understand. It was all one big bluff, wasn't it? Your true intention was to draw a slip of the tongue from the culprit. That's why you said you knew who did it, to put them on edge." Celeste nodded.
"That's right, however, Mondo was my target all along, I had my suspicions about him from the beginning." Kyoko shrugged.
"But why? What made you so suspicious?" Akira raised a brow.
"That's a good question. There was a certain turning point that tipped me off. Maybe you don't notice it Mondo, but you tend to refer to men and women differently. You only call guys, 'Dude' and girls, 'Chick.' And after he was killed you would refer to him as 'dude'. Once I picked up on that, it occurred to me Mondo knew something we didn't." Kyoko explained
"Y-you noticed such a tiny detail?" Hifumi gasped.
"Are you a witch? She's a witch! You're positively frightful!" Jill laughed.
"No, I'm not the frightful one." Kyoko shook her head,"Not nearly as frightful as someone capable of murdering a friend."
"Mondo... Is it true? Did you really kill Chihiro?" Tsuki asked.
"I-I...I-I didn't kill anyone!" Mondo snapped, "You've been all over me, judging everything I say, putting words in my mouth... What gives your the right to treat me like a goddamn criminal?"
"Y-Yeah! He would never do something like that! This is a false accusation!" Taka pointed.
"It's true, my reasoning on that is pretty shaky. Kyoko nodded.
"That was fast.." Tsuki muttered.
"Well, this does present us with a problem. It's seems we are all out if leads." Celeste sighed.
"Hehehhehe... My time has nearly come. That's what my little ghost friend is telling me." Hifumi raised his hand.
"Oh yeah, that reminds me. Hifumi, weren't you telling me you'd found some evidence?" Akira tilted her head to the side.
"Really?! What kind of evidence?" Hina gasped.
"Actually, you know... Now that I'm thinking about it here calmly, it might not be all that relevant." Hifumi shook his head.
"Jeez, did your confidence just get up and walk away? It's fine man, just tell us!" Hiro rolled his eyes.
"I-if you really insist, then... Um... Here it is." Hifumi revealed a handbook.
"Hm? What do you have there?" Jill leaned forward.
"It happens to be an e-Handbook. found it laying on the ground so I scooped it up." Hifumi explained.
"We know Chihiro's handbook was missing from the scene of the crime, right?" Tsuki raised a brow.
"For a fact." Kyoko nodded.
"For a fact indeed! I was totally sure I found it!" Hifumi nodded.
"Then it must hold some clue about the culprit's identity!" Hina pointed.
"Well... That's what I was hoping. But it's busted. It won't even turn on." Hifumi muttered.
"I imagine the culprit broke it to get rid of any evidence after the murder." Celeste explained.
"That's odd. I didn't think the handbooks were quite so... Fragile." Byakuya raised a brow.
"You're right, they aren't! They're totally waterproof and shock resistant! It would take an awful lot to break one." Monokuma spoke up.
"And yet, this one does appear to be broken. As is Leon's, sitting useless in the main hall. For all your confidence, this is a remarkably high failure rate." Celeste hummed.
"Puhuhu. Do you think there might be some kind of mystery in there somewhere?" Monokuma asked,"How, precisely, did the handbooks get broken?"
"Well, you already told us before that the Handbooks had one weak point, right?" Akira raised a brow.
"Gah! You remember that? Sure... Maybe I let that slip but never told anyone what the wrak point actually was!" Monokuma sighed.
"But if the Handbook is supposed to never break and two of them broke in quick succession then..." Sakura turned to Kyoko.
"Then we can only assume someone figured out its weakness. You know what the weakness is, right Monokuma? What is it?" Kyoko looked at the bear.
"Huh? You're asking me?" Monokuma asked.
"I think its a necessary piece of information if you want this to be a fair trial." Kyoko shrugged.
"But... If I tell you and someone else decides to copy it, that would be very not good." Monokuma huffed.
"Just tell us anyway! Why would we wanna break our own handbooks?" Hina groaned.
"Oh well... I have a weakness for pushy demands. You're sure you won't follow their example? Then allow me to make an announcement! The weak point of my cutting edge e-Handbook is... When it's exposed to high temperature for too long, it will suffer a meltdown and break down!" Monokuma announced.
"I flippin knew it!" Hifumi pointed.
"You knew it?" Akira raised a brow.
"Yeah cause I found the handbook laying of the floor of the sauna." Hifumi nodded.
"The temperature in the sauna can reach over 200 degrees. Strange how you don't get burnt, huh? It's because as your sweat evaporates, it creates a cooling layer of air around your skin. If the hot air of the sauna were somehow pushed directly onto your skin, you'd definitely get fried!" Monokuma grinned,"That layer of air would get blown away. That's why you may feel a burning when you move around. So when you're in a sauna, make sure to keep nice and still!"
"Wow, interesting! I learned a new fact today!" Taka smiled.
"That is a mere trifling speck of knowledge." Hifumi nodded.
"Anyway, if you found the victim's Handbook in the sauna... Then the killer must have been purposefully trying to raise it's temperature in order to break it." Akira concluded.
"Meaning the culprit somehow knew it's weakness." Sakura tilted her head.
"But how'd he find out? Monokuma said he didn't tell anyone, right?" Hina looked around.
"Indeed, quite the mystery." Hifumi crossed his arms.
"What if they found out by accident?" Kyoko suggested.
"What do you mean by accident?" Sakura asked.
"What if the killer took their own Handbook into the sauna, not knowing it's weakness and it broke?" Kyoko raised a brow,"They'd realise it was broken, of course, and it wouldn't be hard to figure out why. Then once they had Chihiro's handbook, they knew they had an easy way to dispose of it."
"I won't say it's not possible... But who would've done something like that? I don't know of anyone who took their handbook into the sauna." Byakuya shrugged.
"I might know someone who did..." Akira bit her lip.
"Whoa! Seriously?" Hifumi gasped.
"I think the one who may have taken their handbook into the sauna was..." Akira paused when she noticed Taka's face but shook her head,"Mondo... Your handbook got broken in the sauna, didn't it?"
"Wh- What?" Mondo looked at her.
"Why... Why do you keep accusing him?" Taka shook his head.
"Mondo and Taka had an endurance contest in the sauna not too long ago, remember? And for the contest, Mondo just so happened to keep his school uniform on. But little did he realise, he'd also left his Handbook in one of his uniform pockets." Akira explained,"And when it was all over, Mondo discovered that taking your handbook into the sauna could easily destroy it."
"No- Wait. Hold on. You've got it all wrong! He would never kill. I don't accept this, show me the proof! The actual solid proof!" Taka pointed.
"Taka..." Akira shook her head.
"Let's test Akira's assertion, if what she says is correct then Mondo... You broke your own handbook." Kyoko nodded.
"In other words, if Mondo's handbook is actually broken then that proves what Akira said it right." Celeste agreed.
"Well, my goddamn handbook works just fine!" Mondo shouted.
"Mondo." Akira stopped him,"The handbook you have right now... Is it really yours?"
"The fuck is that supposed to mean?"
"The broken handbook that was in the main hall... Isn't that one actually yours?" Akira asked.
"What are you talking about?" Taka shook his head, he didn't want to believe that his new friend would do something like this.
"What I mean is, I think Mondo swapped his handbook out for one that actually works. I think he took Leon's handbook and replaced it with his own." Akira explained,"After all, Monokuma said himself that Leon's handbook never should have broken."
"That's right! The punishment itself wasn't nearly enough to destroy it!" Monokuma pointed.
"So then, the broken handbook in the main hall is actually Mondo's. Which would mean the handbook Mondo has right now is actually Leon's, yes?" Celeste concluded.
"But doesn't that violate the school regulation that says loaning your handbook is prohibited?" Hina raised a brow.
"Well, here's how I look at it. There is a rule about loaning your handbook to another student... But if they're dead, they're not a student!" Monok uma shrugged, "If kind of a grey area, I admit, but no worries! If anything, it just makes things more interesting. As such, u decree that exchanging handbooks with a corpse is not a violation of the rules."
"Well, Mondo? If I'm wrong about this, you're welcome to say so. Akira sighed, I'm happy to admit made a mistake-"
"S-son of a bitch." Mondo sighed.
"What's wrong, bro? Come on, tell her she's wrong!" Taka desperately urged Mondo,"You ARE wrong! You HAVE to be wrong! Everything you just said us wrong! You made it all up!"
"Okay, why don't we look back on this case one more time, from the beginning? That way everything can become clear and we'll see if we're right or wrong." Tsuki nodded.
"First, let's take a look back to before the incident. Last night, Celeste saw Chihiro in the warehouse, correct?" Akira began, At the time, he was apparently stuffing something something into a duffel bag. That something was a blue tracksuit, you can confirm this, right Celeste?"
"With his bag in hand, Chihiro headed out, even though it was already nighttime. He made his way fo the locker room, specifically the boys locker room. But how could the victim, who was apparently a girl, able to access the boys locker room? Simple, because she, was a he." Tsuki shrugged.
"Which is why he was able to use his own e-Handbook to gain entrance to the boys locker room. Once inside, he met with someone there... And the person he net was the one who killed him." Akira continued,"It seems likely that the killer grabbed the nearby dumbbell, approached the unsuspecting Chihiro... And attacked him. And that's where the bloodstains on the poster and carpeting in the boys locker room came from."
"It was likely in the heat of the moment. The body was arranged, but the murder itself felt unplanned. Which is why the killer hurried to try and hide the act. First, pulling up the bloodstained carpet... Then removing the bloody poster... And finally carrying the corpse into the girls locker room. A girls handbook was necessary to get into the locker room of course. But this doesn't prove the killer is a girl." Tsuki shook her head.
"After all, Sayaka and Junko's handbooks had been placed in the main hall. Using one of those, a boy could get into the girl's locker room without much problem." Akira went on, And that's exactly how the killer did it. With the carpet and the poster they'd brought with them, they got to work... They changed the layout of the boys and girls locker room in what you might call... A crime scene switch!"
"You see, that could have been the end of things. Byakuya discovered the body and decided to... Intervene in the situation, making things even more com plicated. So after stumbling on the crime scene he went and got the extention cord from the library and then he got to work... He used the cord to string up Chihiro's lifeless body. Then, using the victims own blood, he left a grisly message there at the crime scene. He wanted to create the illusion that Genocide Jack was responsible for the slaughter." Tsuki crossed her arms.
"And around the same time that Byakuya was putting together this facade, the killer, having already disposed of Chihiro's bag and other belongings, arrived at the sauna. There, they planned to destroy the last piece if evidence... Chihiro's handbook." Akira sighed,"And just as the killer expected, the steamy sauna was enough to ruin the electronic gadget. Somehow, the killer knew the handbook couldn't stand up to the heat of the sauna... And the reason they knew that is because the sauna had already wrecked their own handbook!"
"And that's how it played out... Isn't that right, Mondo Owada?" Tsuki pointed.
"Kh-kheeh..." Mondo sighed.
"W-wait..! No, this can't be right! Where's your evidence..? Y-yeah, where's your evidence!? You need evidence! You need proof! Without any proof, you can't pin any of this on him!" Taka yelled.
"If my thinking so far is right... Mondo must have replaced his handbook with Leon's. In which case, we can just check each of our handbooks now. Once we do that, we'll-" Tsuki went to bring her's out.
"We don't gotta do that." Mondo stopped her.
"Huh?" Tsuki blinked.
"Yeah. Yeah... I did it, I killed him..." Mondo admitted.
"Bro? Bro... What are you saying?" Taka was taken aback.
"I got no choice, man. After hearing all that, I just gotta give up... Go on, Monokuma. Get it over with... Ask for your goddamn verdict." Mondo shook his head.
"Roger that!" Monokuma raised his hand.
Just as expected... Mondo was voted guilty of Chihiro's murder...
