Chapter 26

Week three went like this:

Hyunjin wrote post-its notes, forgot to write post-it notes and sent good morning texts instead. He teased Minho and hugged Felix. They finished recording Wow and Chan arranged it to perfection, and then, the next day, their choreo was done and only needed to be practiced.

Seungmin covered Not By The Moon and Dolphin, and Jeongin made real progress with his dancing.

Changbin came home late, working on new music with Chan and Jisung, but he always took the time to buy them groceries. On one evening he attempted to braid Hyunjin's hair. Keyword: attempted.

Days passed and Hyunjin, caught in Kkami videos from his parents and his folder for Soonie, Doongi and Dori pictures starting to seriously threaten his phone's memory capacity, let himself fall for Changbin. More and more, every day. There was something to the way they just clicked. Like the past year of being roommates had ultimately led up to their group hangouts turning into triple dates (and Seungmin and Jeongin dancing around each other), to Changbin shyly sending Hyunjin a tentative love song, to Hyunjin sleeping in Changbin's hoodies and forgetting to do laundry so Changbin had no choice but to steal Hyunjin's hoodies in return.

Jisung was his usual loud self, demanding hugs and kisses. Chan was there for emotional support and, on one occasion, listened to Hyunjin talk about Changbin for over an hour, only to nod and say 'yeah I love Binnie hugs too.' They understood each other.

Week four followed in this, in the way the days melted into each other and Hyunjin's biggest problem was his homework, in the way he cuddled Changbin to sleep on weekends, and in the way Changbin got lost in Hyunjin's eyes.

Until –

"Yo, what's up," Trevor said as he sat down next to Hyunjin in his music lecture.

The audacity.

"How's it going with Changbin?" Trevor grinned.

Hyunjin returned the smirk and lied, because despite everything happening, he hadn't forgotten about the money for the new couch. "It's good. He doesn't suspect a thing."

"That's great, man! You can break up with him any day now," Trevor leaned in and lowered his voice, "the money is yours, as promised. Do you have time tomorrow evening in the twenty-four hours convenience store next to the art building?"

Hyunjin bit back a laugh. "Of course."

The things he did for a new couch.

In the end, it wasn't as dramatic a break up scene as there might be in a drama.

Hyunjin didn't join Changbin and Chan for lunch on Friday, instead he sat with Felix and Minho and let them laugh at his sulking because he wouldn't see Changbin until later that night. It felt good to spend lunch with his friends again, as the past weeks he'd been with Changbin nearly every day. But hey, once they had Trevor's money, they'd be able to spend time as a group without threatening the Acquiring Of A New Couch and Hyunjin would have his friends and Changbin.

And the new couch.

He felt lighter whenever he thought about it. It would be a big, fluffy couch, that could fit eight people and would be perfect for naps. No creaky noises when sitting, no weird bumps poking your back, and smelling like fresh... whatever new couches smelled like.

Dark clouds gathered over the afternoon, to literally nobody but Hyunjin's surprise. If Hyunjin wanted the teary fake break up in the rain, the universe would just make it happen. Changbin sent him laughing emojis and memes, and left his lecture five minutes early to meet with Hyunjin.

Hyunjin, alone, stood in front of the music department, and waited. He turned his head up and let the first raindrops fall on his face. Felix and Minho were still in the music department, there to watch from afar and gather blackmail material for future drinking games. As they were in on the plan, they were too likely to blow their cover if they waited with Hyunjin, so they could stay warm and dry and send updates to the group chat.

Changbin stepped out of the music building, smiling nervously, but smiling nonetheless. He stopped an arm's length away from Hyunjin.

"Hey, hyung," Hyunjin smiled.

"Hyunjinnie," Changbin said. He lifted his hand as if to reach out but stopped. "Oh god, what if we start laughing halfway through our script?"

"We wing it," Hyunjin said confidently, "you know, hysterical laughing is always an option. Just make sure to cry and accuse me of breaking your heart, yeah?"

Changbin rolled his eyes. "So, we pretend to argue – and as soon as people are leaving the lecture, we start with the... reason we break up?" He bit on his lip to suppress a laugh.

Hyunjin nodded. "Make sure to fake a few tears with Chan, I'll go to my meeting point with Trevor and get the money. We'll see each other in the cafe with the others."

"I know," Changbin sighed. "Are you sure Trevor is serious? Like, what if he just wanted to play a prank on you, too? On us?"

"I'll be careful just in case," Hyunjin wanted to desperately hold his boyfriend's hand, "he literally sent me a picture of the money, and let's be honest, he kinda is that stupid."

"Ha, you're right," Changbin chuckled, brushing his wet fringe from his eyes. "It rained just for you, huh?"

"For us," Hyunjin replied. The first students were coming out the doors, most of them in a rush to go places. It rained for real now, thick droplets splashing on the ground and adding to the aesthetic. "It's show time."

Changbin did his best to school his face into resting bitch face mode, and Hyunjin copied him. Oh, nude modelling did do wonders for his acting skills.

"Right, I'll start lying now," Hyunjin said quietly, and then then continued louder, "I just can't do this anymore. We need to break up!"

"But why? I don't know what got into you," Changbin replied. One of the music students stopped to watch, despite the pouring rain.

Hyunjin groaned, as if annoyed, and ran his hands through his hair. "You know why."

"I don't know! That's the problem!"

"Always," Hyunjin started, distress slipping into his voice, "always when we're grocery shopping. You only care for the ice cream. I'm supposed to be your boyfriend, but I'm not important?"

Changbin's face twitched, holding in laughter. "Are you kidding? Why would you get upset about something so insignificant?"

"I just am, okay! My feelings aren't insignificant!" Hyunjin took a step towards Changbin and then two steps away, looking around them in what he could only hope was a good expression of embarrassment. He saw Trevor among the handful of people hanging around and pretending they weren't listening.

"As if you're any better," Changbin started, this time going into offense. "You like pineapple on pizza. I'm a man with principles, you should be grateful I talk to you."

Hyunjin gasped. It was likely that people – Trevor – wouldn't be able to make out every word with the distance between them, still the students leaving, and the rain. Body language would be the most important thing. He raised his voice. "How could you? You insult me like this? After you made it clear you don't care about me?"

"Please, I love you more than I love anything else. Don't break up with me."

"I am breaking up with you," Hyunjin said, voice steady. "It's not working out. If it makes you feel better, let's say it's not you, it's me."

"How? I'm sorry," Changbin reached out with his hand, that Hyunjin coolly looked at for a moment and then ignored.

"Your apology means nothing, Changbin-ssi. I'd appreciate it if you stay out of my life."

"You can't leave me!"

"I hope you'll be happy without me." Hyunjin wiped at his eyes, mostly to get the rain away. Changbin was the one who would fake cry. Hyunjin turned around and walked away.

"But I love you!" Changbin called after him.

Hyunjin elected to just smile awkwardly at whoever was left from the gossipers of the music department, and let Changbin do his thing of wiping his eyes and watching Hyunjin go, with Chan hurrying to his side, quietly complimenting his acting skills.

His chest felt heavy, his stomach in knots. Despite the fact that they had planned out what they were going to say and had followed the plan nearly word for word, he didn't like saying these things to Changbin. If Changbin chose ice cream over him, Hyunjin would just accept it and move on with his life. And pineapple on pizza – well, okay, Hyunjin had to admit that was weird, but sometimes he just wanted the universe to be a little contradictory. Out of spite.

Think of the couch, Hyunjin, he thought.

He reached the convenience store he'd meet Trevor at in five minutes, and decided to finally get out of the rain.

They needed some breakfast foods for the weekend, and Hyunjin wanted to stock up on frozen berries because he couldn't get that one raspberry tiramisu out of his head all week. Should he buy ice cream? Hm, it would be funny.

Hyunjin was pulling his card out his wallet to pay the bored looking cashier when Trevor appeared, handing a handful notes over.
