Chapter 25
"Um. Anyway," Seungmin said, summoning some pencils from the depths of his bag and attempting to smooth his crumpled sketching paper, "I'll start with some warm up sketches so try not to move! I don't actually know how to draw you yet, by the way."
"What's the assignment, like, specifically?" Hyunjin asked, moving into a comfortable position and holding his coffee close to his face so he would be able to drink it without moving too much. "I can help you brainstorm ideas if you want?"
"I'll cover two Got7 songs for you," Seungmin replied, relieved. "And I'm very happy for you and Changbin-hyung. I would be lying if I said I didn't see it coming, but... you light up when you smile, and you smile when you look at him. Do you think I can draw you smiling? I'm afraid it'll just look terrible because the only thing worse than drawing humans is drawing human expressions..."
"You know exactly how to bribe me, Minnie. Also, that'll be two Got7 vocal covers and Dolphin by Oh My Girl."
"... Okay."
It said a lot about Seungmin's state of stress and exhaustion that he agreed to that, but he did.
Changbin ended up throwing breakfast together for them, leaving to work on songs and hang out with Chan and Jisung not much later.
Until lunch, Hyunjin and Seungmin sat on the floor as Seungmin drew, first with pencils, black on white, and then with acrylics, suffering quite a lot. Hyunjin tried lifting Seungmin's mood and easing his anxiety. They had fun, which was an important process when making art. In Hyunjin's humble opinion.
Seungmin submitted a picture of the drying painting to his professor, depicting Hyunjin, in all his realistic glory. Sunlight from the window caught in his hair, skin smooth, his eyes set on something off screen, a brilliant smile on his face. It wasn't perfect – the still life of a bunch of paint tubes and papers on the desk had more character than the painted Hyunjin right next to it, and while the fabric of his sweater fell in artful and even realistic waves, his limbs weren't quite where they should be. His painted face, despite the complex expression, was not a mirror – but a trendy snow filter thrown on a blurry selfie. It still showed tremendous progress in Seungmin's art, especially compared to his attempts at painting people from last semester.
Hyunjin only offered praise to Seungmin, and ordered pizza for them. He let Seungmin take a power nap in his old room while he cleaned up the takeout boxes and did the laundry.
He woke Seungmin, in the later afternoon and watched as Seungmin tiredly packed his stuff and went home to dinner with Jeongin, leaving the painting to dry in a corner in Hyunjin's living room. Seungmin promised to sing a cover for Hyunjin soon, and Hyunjin teased him all the way to the door.
Changbin returned just as Hyunjin was considering the pros and cons of another organic face mask – this one would be bright blue, as advertised on the package. His self care day was kind of messed up because of the sudden change of plans. But bleaching his roots could wait another week, and really – his skin was doing okay, it probably didn't need an experimental face mask today.
Changbin also returned in sweaty work-out clothes that clung to his skin – and his shirt happened to be sleeveless. Hyunjin didn't know what to do with himself. Was that what Changbin felt whenever he saw Hyunjin after a dance class?
Hyunjin glared at the trashcan, fully knowing it would not help him make decisions. Decisions about the face mask as well as how to best get Changbin out of those clothes.
"Can I use your shampoo?" Changbin called from another room. "I forgot to buy a new bottle this week."
Or maybe the trashcan could help him make decisions.
He found Changbin looking at Seungmin's painting with a small smile on his face.
"How do you feel about showering together," Hyunjin kissed Changbin's cheek, and when he licked his lips he tasted the salt of sweat.
Changbin turned his head, returning his kiss. He smiled sweetly. "If I can use your shampoo?"
Hyunjin hummed. "Bubble bath? And you can use my conditioner, too."
"You'd let me share your precious bath bombs and your emotional support conditioner?" Changbin doubtfully raised his eyebrows. "You know, we're dating now and there's very little I wouldn't do for you, but you're your own person. If you need or want space, I'd understand."
"Oh." Hyunjin's first impulse was to ask if this was Changbin telling him he was coming on too strong, but – they'd been good at communicating, and the night before Changbin had said he liked skinship. "I'm asking because I want to," Hyunjin decided to say honestly, "but you're – you're right, again. I like to just be alone from time to time, and so do you. Let's try being understanding and accommodating when one of us wants some alone time, yeah? I can go sleep a few nights in my old room, it's not far away."
Changbin kissed him in answer. "That much distance won't be necessary, for me," he murmured against Hyunjin's lips. "I appreciate the offer, but I really like having you in my bed."
Hyunjin laughed, resting his hands on Changbin's hips, gently pushing him back against the wall. Changbin followed like they were dancing a waltz, turning his head up when Hyunjin leaned into him. "So, bath?"
Changbin kissed him again.
He was still kissing him when they were squished into their bathtub, with conditioner in their hair and bubbles around them.
In the bright bathroom lights the comfortable trust of darkness and a soft bed beneath them was replaced with the intricate embarrassment of being naked without any romantic excuse. Still, the intimacy felt natural to Hyunjin, so he relaxed in Changbin's arms, enjoying the feeling of Changbin's hands dragging over his body and washing the product out of his hair. They kept up a quiet stream of conversation, checking in about boundaries and laughing away lingering traces of embarrassment. (Sometimes shame just needed to be jump-spin-kicked into space.)
There was something wonderful about holding hands.
"And is this what you do every week?" Changbin asked.
"Well, not like, always," Hyunjin said. He leaned with his back to Changbin, resting his head on Changbin's shoulder and his hands on Changbin's hands on his stomach. "Just when I feel like it. Sometimes I call my parents or just lie in bed. Sometimes I'm even productive or go on a run."
"This is nice, though. I like it."
"You're just saying that because you have me naked," Hyunjin teased, turning his head to press a kiss to Changbin's jaw.
Changbin, predictably, blushed. "No, it's definitely because of the bubbles."
Hyunjin hummed, and closed his eyes. Being this close to Changbin? Incredible. Hyunjin loved him.
"Do you wanna meet my family?" Changbin asked then, like he was observing the temperature of the water.
"Do I wanna what?" Hyunjin abprubtly sat up, water splashing. "Of course I do! Do you want your family to meet me?"
Changbin giggled. "They've met you, you know? When moving in? I've met your parents too. Your mom brings us homemade kimchi every month."
"Oh."
"Don't worry, my family likes you," he kissed Hyunjin's cheek. "It's kinda impossible not to."
Hyunjin relaxed back into Changbin's embrace. "You need to befriend Kkami. If she likes you, you can coparent with me."
"I'd love to," Changbin said and smiled. He tightened his arms around Hyunjin's middle. "Anything for you."
A couple minutes of comfortable silence later Hyunjin suggested they do face masks, to which Changbin agreed simply because he thought it would make Hyunjin smile. It did.
They wore each other's hoodies while cooking dinner, and Hyunjin could do nothing but enjoy the ride as he fell more and more in love with Changbin.
He knew Kkami would love him, too.
