Chapter 21
It felt like no time was passing as Hyunjin went to work and then to meet Changbin and the others at the studio to work on their song.
Then he was at home, Changbin kissing the back of his hands, Changbin smiling at him in the bathroom mirror and Changbin's arm around him as he fell asleep, just to do it all over again the next day.
Hyunjin loved it. He loved sending Changbin little updates about his day or commentary from his lectures, and he loved receiving little details and cat gifs. He found himself thinking of Changbin to pass the time, and he found himself enjoying every moment of it.
"You don't even know how beautiful you are," Changbin told him that Thursday after watching the French movie that made them both tear up at the end.
"What, because I'm crying?"
"Because you're smiling still." Changbin answered, taking his hand. "Sometimes I'm afraid I'll blink and we'll be back to rarely seeing each other."
"That won't happen," Hyunjin promised. He pressed his lips to Changbin's fingers. "Sleep is overrated anyway."
They'd both adjusted their daily routines to each other. Hyunjin often stayed awake longer, and Changbin woke at the same time as Hyunjin to kiss him good morning and then sleep for another couple of hours. It wasn't perfect, but Hyunjin would just go to sleep in Changbin's bed, and on mornings when Changbin was too tired to say much more than a slurred 'come back to bed,' Hyunjin would write post-it notes. Changbin kept them all.
"Even if we don't see each other much during the week," Hyunjin continued, "we have the weekends. But you also can't just stop hanging out with Chan-hyung and Jisung."
"We eat lunch together almost every day," Changbin remembered and smiled. "You're right. It's really convenient that we literally live with each other."
Hyunjin hummed, watching Changbin's smile and the way his shoulders relaxed just a bit at the realisation that his worries were unfounded.
"I'll take you on a real date this Saturday, though. Just so you know."
"Oh?" Hyunjin raised an eyebrow. "Are you implying we're not currently on a real date?"
Changbin looked puzzled. "How?"
"A movie date, hyung. Literally." Hyunjin rolled his eyes. "We had popcorn. We held hands."
Changbin blushed.
Hyunjin smirked. "Hyung." He held up their clasped hands. "Do you hold hands with all your friends when you watch a movie together?"
"Jisung can't watch movies that have even a sliver of horror, so yes," Changbin laughed. "I like to cuddle, too."
"Oh, really? Come here," Hyunjin opened his arms to welcome a slightly embarrassed but happy Changbin into his lap.
Changbin was heavy and warm and wasted no time wrapping his arms around Hyunjin's neck and leaning on him. Hyunjin put his arms on Changbin's waist, debating the pros and cons of tickling him but deciding on just holding him. The extra weight pushed Hyunjin into the couch, which dug uncomfortably into his back, but in this moment he couldn't care less. Changbin smelled like fresh clothes and like Changbin, a scent Hyunjin realised he loved every time he went to sleep in Changbin's bed. Their bed now.
"Wait," Hyunjin said. "When you told me about your crush last week, did you mean me? Or your kpop bias? It's okay if you like a kpop idol too, you know?"
Changbin pulled back to look Hyunjin in the eyes. "I meant you. I mean you." He rolled his eyes, "I literally can't believe I said everything I said and you didn't realise I meant you."
"What, seriously?" Hyunjin felt a smile bloom on his lips, and blood rushed to his face. "Everything you said – you think of me like that?"
"Yeah," Changbin's eyes softened, his hand cupped Hyunjin's cheek. "I love your smile."
"You're adorable" Hyungjin kissed the corner of Changbin's mouth. "I love you."
Changin, predictably, blushed until his ears turned red. He hid his face in Hyunjin's hair and they stayed in an embrace until Hyunjin's stomach growled and Changbin offered to make them ramen.
On the weekend, Changbin didn't join Hyunjin, Jeongin, and the girls in practising Criminal, but he did show up at noon with his hair styled and glitter in the corner of his eyes. Jeongin had practiced his dancing, which Hyunjin knew because Seungmin had told him over text. The girls were managing the choreo okay, given the fact that they were in middle school and only ever learned dancing informally and from each other.
Changbin greeted Hyunjin with a kiss on the cheek while Hyunjin was still stretching.
"Hey, hyung," Hyunjin smiled, dragging Changbin to the floor with him.
"Hyung!" Jeongin called from where he was lying on the floor, sweaty and tired. "Hyunjin-hyung made us practice the split, I feel like my legs will never be the same again."
Euntak giggled and poked Jeongin's arm. "You're just sad we're better at this than you."
"Hi, Changbin-oppa!" Taeul greeted, because she was the only one who had manners.
"Hi, Taeul," Changbin said, because he remembered their names and was the love of Hyunjin's life. Changbin crossed his legs and leaned against Hyunjin. "Jinnie, I'm taking you out on a date."
"Will there be food involved? I'll come with you," Jeongin said, swatting Euntak's hand away.
"Nope, no food for you," Changbin replied, shrugging. "You tagged along last week, you're not allowed to come this time."
"I shall suffer alone, then," Jeongin wailed, "without a significant other to share my pain. Without hyungs who buy me food. When the apocalypse starts, I'll be among the zombies and the damned."
Hyunjin rolled his eyes. "And people say I'm the dramatic one."
"He definitely learned this from you," Changbin smiled.
Hyunjin changed position to stretch his other leg, Taeul followed his lead. Euntak had long stopped doing anything, but it was fine, the dance practice hadn't been too intense. Jeongin just never worked out. A lot of kpop choreographies put great importance on being in sync, so Hyunjin had focused on synchronizing today. The cover was coming along nicely, and they looked like potatoes who were trying their best. Hyunjin was proud of the progress they'd made.
After another few minutes of stretching and relaxing his muscles, Hyunjin declared the dance practice over and they left the building together, parting ways with hugs at the bus station.
Changbin unceremoniously dragged Hyunjin into another direction, waving and showing the girls a cute finger heart.
"You're very nice to them," Hyunjin laughed, linking his arm with Changbin. "I know they're cool, but they're also in middle school."
"I'm just trying to get them to want to produce music," Changbin said, averting his eyes and blushing. "Also, they care about you."
Hyunjin flipped his hair dramatically (as dramatically as possible, it barely reached his shoulders) and sighed. "Not everyone can be as cool as Soyeon from Yeoja Idle, but if someone could, it would be Taeul and Euntak. And 3Racha," he added as an afterthought.
"Thanks?"
"You're welcome."
Hyunjin didn't ask where they were going. He assumed it would be related to food, but Changbin stopped them in a park and got them street food from a stall. Hyunjin decided to just go with it and enjoy the nice weather, the fresh air, the delicious food and Changbin next to him, talking about the technicalities of arranging a song and some vocal training tutorials Chan found on youtube at 3am.
Hyunjin managed to pet two very cute puppies.
Then Changbin took his hand and led him into an unassuming building, or maybe Hyunjin just didn't notice any signs because his boyfriend was smiling at him over his shoulder.
Changbin showed a code on his phone to a receptionist, who smiled politely and wished them a good time at – an art gallery?
"Binnie-hyung?" Hyunjin asked, squeezing his hand.
"I thought you'd like it," Changbin murmured, squeezing back. "Also, you follow one of the artists here on Instagram. And there's some photography, too."
Marry me, Hyunjin thought, but didn't say because they had been dating for six days and talked about their preferred method of proposing. Which wasn't in a public setting. Hyunjin would propose to Changbin, but it would be at home, in a few months, when they had a new couch that was comfortable to sleep on. Maybe in bed, between the sheets on a sunny morning. Or one late night in the bathroom, while brushing their teeth.
Probably that last one.
"I love you," Hyunjin said, and returned Changbin's smile.
