Chapter 11
Hyunjin sighed and closed his eyes, but only for a moment. The only people he talked about this with were Felix and Minho, and only because they were literally there. "Do you know why I needed a roommate so suddenly?"
"No, but Chan said you're Lixie's friend and Lixie said you're cool. And you are."
"Aw, he did? He's so cute," Hyunjin smiled, but stopped quickly. "When I started university, I moved in with my boyfriend, and... it was fine, until it wasn't. He broke up with me, and at first I thought we could be friends who live together, but then he started bringing around other people."
"What an asshole," Changbin said, voice rougher than it usually was.
"Yeah," Hyunjin agreed. He laughed lightly, giving the choking feeling in his chest room to come free. He didn't feel better. "I let it go on too long, too. Felix and Minho basically kidnapped me and moved all my stuff to Felix's place, so I'd have no choice but to stay on his and Chan-hyung's couch. Until I either managed to carry everything back in secret or found another place to live."
"They're good people," Changbin reached out and took one of Hyunjin's hands between his own.
"I know," Hyunjin agreed. "And their couch? I'm telling you, it's the best couch in the world. Unlike this thing we're sitting on."
Changbin smiled. "That's why we're buying a new couch as soon as we get that money. And... even if this fails or Trevor doesn't give us anything, we'll buy a new couch. My sister owes me so much money for my overtime, I just need to... convince her to send it to me."
"You mean you're going to do aegyo until she's tired of seeing your face," Hyunjin smiled, somehow feeling – good. Warm. Like this was a conversation that was long in the coming and maybe he'd even be able to be more open about his past relationship now. Probably not really, but one day he'd be better than he ever had been with his ex. Definitely.
"My ways have never failed before," Changbin made a heart with his thumb and index finger, "I'm just irresistible."
Hyunjin giggled and leaned against Changbin's shoulder. "I told you about my ex, now tell me about yours. If you'd like."
Changbin stuttered. "Well – I, uhm."
"Hmm?"
Changbin tensed against Hyunjin. "I've never... I've never been in a relationship. I had a crush in high school but... well."
Hyunjin wrapped his arms around Changbin and waited for him to relax.
"I was going to confess to him before the year ended," Changbin started. "Like, we were sort of friends. I knew he was straight, but I knew he would be nice about it, and I just – I guess I wanted closure. And I was eighteen, of course I hoped he'd feel the same or if he just... I don't know, held my hand? Went on a friend date with me? Fell in love? I hoped and tried not to hope at the same time."
"... but?" Hyunjin asked when it seemed like Changbin wouldn't continue.
"The day I planned to confess, one of our mutual friends confessed to him and he told her he loved her too. I said I'm happy for them."
"Hyung," Hyunjin whined, "that sucks."
"I'm over it now," Changbin shrugs. "I'm one hundred percent over it."
"Oh? Is there someone?" Hyunjin teased, only for realisation to hit him like a brick. "Hyung! If you have a crush, why did you agree to fake date me? What if they like you too but now they think you're dating me?"
Changbin let out a very long sigh. "I'm like, one million percent sure my crush has no idea I like him."
"Him? Binnie-hyung, you need to tell me more now."
"He's like... super cute," Changbin smiled at Hyunjin, "and handsome. He's got beautiful hair. He works hard and is incredibly good at what he does. But most of all, he's the nicest and softest person and his smile makes me happy. I don't think he realises how lovable he is."
Hyunjin narrowed his eyes. "So you're telling me he's good looking, talented, and he has a good personality?"
"The best personality," Changbin agreed. "His laugh is the best. I love seeing him laugh."
"... I can't believe you think you can just describe your kpop bias to me and think I won't notice. Men are trash, cats are the only good left in the world. Cats, and kpop idols." Hyunjin rolled his eyes. "There's no way a man like that exists in real life."
Changbin looked like he was questioning the meaning of life for a second, then he sighed and leaned back into the uncomfortable, sorry excuse of a couch. "I don't know what I expected. Anyway, I thought you prefer dogs?"
Hyunjin smirked and raised an eyebrow, feeling very smug. "I like dogs and cats. I realised that there's no point in trying to deny myself the simple honesty of liking all cute things. Including cats."
Changbin stared. "But – but Jisung and Minho send pictures of their cats into the group chat to get at you, specifically. You're telling me you actually enjoy that?"
"Have you seen Dori? Of course I enjoy the cat spams!" Hyunjin grabbed his phone and pulled up his gallery, showing Changbin the folder simply titled with three hearts. "I put a lot of work into receiving as many cat pictures as I can."
"You're a genius," Changbin whispered.
"Thank you, I'm aware," Hyunjin joked. He couldn't resist cooing at a picture of Soonie and Dori curled up in a pink bean bag. "But to come back to your crush. Seriously. Who is he? What's his flaw? And don't say he doesn't have a flaw, even kpop idols have flaws. We just don't know about them or if we do, we choose to love them anyway."
Changbin closed his eyes and didn't answer for a long while. "You know what, the song I showed you last Saturday? The demo track I sent you?"
"Alright then, don't tell me," Hyunjin said, but smiled so Changbin knew he wasn't really upset about it. "And I've been listening to the demo all week, of course I remember. What about it?"
"Chan-hyung and Jisung finally listened to it. And we thought it would sound good if DanceRacha – I mean, you, Felix and Minho – would sing it. Or rap it. And wait," Changbin cut off Hyunjin's denial with a look, "I know you rap in the shower. Yes, I think you can do this. I'll help you with the lyrics, and you can work on it with Felix and Minho."
"Do you have a title?" Hyunjin asked, because this? This felt like something. Like the itch he got when he saw a cool move in a choreo and wanted to do it too, or when he listened to a song and just knew he had to dance to it. He wanted to give it an honest attempt, and maybe, just maybe, this song would be the one he would finally choreograph with Felix and Minho.
Changbin blushed. "It's called – we called it – wow. Except... the beat is a bit more mature and reflects our growth as songwriters."
"Ah, yes," Hyunjin nodded. "You're making an explicit song? Is it kinky?"
Changbin groaned and hid his face in his hands. "Oh my god. Hyunjin. Why... I can't. I just. I can't. Must life be this way?"
Hyunjin smiled and padded Changbin's shoulder. "I will do my best, Binnie-hyung. I promise."
"I know," Changbin replied. He took a breath as if to say something else, but swallowed the words. When he looked up at Hyunjin, he smiled fondly. "I think it's going to be legendary."
