From what I know lore wise, Sam itself is just a set of Armor for someone, mainly because in the dreamscape robots can't dream in order to enter so I assume Sam have a host and said host can separate from him*cough*Firefly*cough* how do I know mainly because I love the Stellaron hunters so f*cking much that I read their lore. Firefly aka the Molten Knight pilot, pilot of the Swarm Annihilation Machine(found the name interesting and couldn't let it just disappear) knowing Firefly conditions were serious I assume she can't part ways with Sam regardless of the situation, I assume Sam served as a medical life support for her. But regardless Sam cares about Firefly since before we  encountered him, we encountered echoes of Firefly and during those echoes she was betrayed by someone name "Mecha" locking her in a room, I assume Sam didn't agree with Eilo script and try to stop her from completing her role but look how that turn out. Regardless Sam try to stop Firefly but at last the script most be followed, it a journey of a Destiny Slave.
