CHAPTER TWO: death of a bachelor
{ " the lace in your dress tingles my neck, how do i live? " -- death of a bachelor, panic! at the disco, 2016 }
"You got another A?" Archie Andrews groaned as he slammed his C- history quiz on his desk. Honeybee Morgan really was the genius everyone said she was. She'd been at Riverdale High School for three days and was already challenging the class ranks of the smartest kids in the class.
"It's not that hard, Andrews." Evie cooly replied with a roll of her eyes.
"Yes, it is, actually." Archie spoke as he stared at the Serpent girl in wonder. Sure, Jug was pretty intelligent, but none of the other Serpents seemed to have book smarts. And here was Honeybee, sitting in her Serpent jacket and combat boots, lazily lounging in her desk while humbly admiring her A quiz.
"How does it just stick in your head like that?" The redheaded boy asked.
Evie shrugged. "I don't know. Most things just stick in my head. And if something doesn't, well, then I just study a little."
"You just study a little." Archie echoed with a laugh in his voice. "That's amazing, Honeybee."
Evie laughed at his flattery. It was nice to know some boys still gave compliments that weren't about "her ass" or "her rack". She found her mind was far more superior than any of her physical attributes. "Thanks, Red."
Archie's cheeks reddened, thus further providing evidence for Honeybee's nickname for him. "You're welcome." He paused as he cleared his throat, as if wanting to say something else. "Um, I don't suppose you tutor, do you?"
Evie was definitely surprised by this. "Tutor?"
"Yeah." The Andrews boy rubbed the back of his neck as he watched the girl. "I really need to get my grades up if I want to get into a good college."
College. Of course Archie had college on the brain. Evie never figured she'd have the opportunity to attend a university, especially after the whole dean incident at Weston. Although, in her time in New York, she'd always been fascinated by the Columbia campus. Whether she walked by it or watched as she rode by on a bus, she always could picture herself there.
That, of course, was in the city. When she was getting her life together. Now she was stuck in Riverdale, back in her Serpent jacket.
"So you want me to tutor you? What about your girlfriend? Or Betty Cooper?" Evie suggested. She hated Veronica already, but the Lodge girl seemed to do okay in school. And Evie knew Betty was pretty smart also.
"Ronnie isn't really one for history, and Betty ... well, she's got a lot on her plate on the moment." Archie said with a sigh.
Ronnie. How adorable. The sickening nickname everyone gave the Lodge princess made Evie's stomach churn, as she knew there was something rotten hidden down in Veronica's core. But, if Evie could infuriate Veronica by tutoring her boyfriend, well, then ...
A devilish smirk formed on Evie's lips as she fluttered her eyelashes at the redhead. "You know what, Archie, that would actually be great. I could use it as volunteer experience on my college applications." She said with a wink.
Surprise was evident on Archie's face as soon as she said "college", and that made Evie laugh inside. Of course he had assumed she didn't think of furthering her education.
"Oh, uh, where are you thinking of applying?" Archie was surprised, as college still seemed far away.
"Columbia." Evie blurted out, though she instantly regretted it. That wasn't something she shared with, well, anybody. She hadn't even told Sweet Pea about that, and the Morgan siblings told each other everything.
"Really?" Archie's eyebrows went up and he broke into an easygoing smile. "I was looking at New York for school, too."
Evie sighed and looked away from the boy, feeling somewhat awkward. She hated that feeling, as she usually oozed confidence. "Yeah, well, that's a long time from now. And it's a highly unattainable dream, so ..." Evie trailed off just as the bell rang, thankfully ending their conversation. She stood up and grabbed her books and jacket. "Well, time for lunch. I'll see you later, Andrews." She winked at the redhead before strolling out of the classroom.
She was a little shocked to see Principal Weatherbee standing in the cafeteria when she arrived, although not quite as surprised to see him so close to the Serpent table.
Evie quickly took the spot beside her brother and looked around the group in confusion.
"Thank you for joining me, students." The principal began. "Gang violence is not allowed in Riverdale High, and neither is any public display of gang association." Weatherbee's eyes drifted around the group, particularly focusing on their leather jackets.
A slight murmur formed in the group as the kids began to realize what the principal meant.
"You want us to give up our jackets?" Jughead spoke up, his hands gripping tightly onto his jacket.
"Principal Weatherbee." The sweet voice of Betty Cooper drifted out as she walked towards her boyfriend and his friends. "That's not fair."
"Yeah." Sweet Pea snorted. "Haven't you ever heard of freedom of expression?"
"I understand your rights thoroughly, students." The principal continued. "However, you must understand our school bylaws as far as gang activities are concerned."
Evie's eyes narrowed and her smirk widened as a plan clicked into place in her brain. She looked over at her brother, who looked ready to explode. "Hey, Sweet Pea, calm down." She smirked. "I have an idea." She whispered.
Sweet Pea's face softened slightly as he watched his sister, and then a wicked smile that mimicked Evie's formed on his face. "Okay." He looked towards Weatherbee. "We won't wear them tomorrow, then."
The group of Serpents was shocked by Sweet Pea's peacefulness on the subject. Jughead especially seemed further angered by this.
"Really? You, Sweet Pea? You're giving up so easily on this?" Jughead blurted out.
Evie walked over to the boy, with a smile on her face. "Jug, it's okay." She gently placed a hand on his arm, pulling him closer. "I have a plan."
Jughead's eyebrows went up and he smirked slightly, before looking back at the principal. He knew how dangerous one of Evie's plans could be, especially to their reputation and records in the school. But, if this meant he could wear his jacket, then maybe he'd be okay with it.
"Okay, Weatherbee." Jughead cleared his throat as he locked eyes with the principal. "We won't wear them. Starting tomorrow, as most of us don't have anything else on besides Serpent jackets and t-shirts."
Principal Weatherbee found this reasonable, so he nodded. "Okay. Thank you, kids." And with that, he left the cafeteria.
"What the Hell, Jones?" A voice called out as Fangs pushed his way towards Jughead. "We can't be repressed down like this!"
"Would you calm down, Fangs?" Evie purred, looping arms with the disgruntled Serpent. "I have a plan." She smirked and flipped her dark hair over her shoulder, then turned as she noticed a flash of red hair and a bright smile. "A plan which we will discuss at the Whyte Worm, say about 5 o'clock?"
"Five? Why not after school?" Evie heard her brother growl.
"Because." She smirked, her charming persona convincing all the Serpents that she had a great plan under development. She took her arm away from Fangs and blew a kiss in the Serpents' direction before walking towards the ginger boy entering the cafeteria. "I have plans after school."
A soft roar began to break out within the Serpent tables as Evie made her way towards Archie and Veronica, the "golden couple" of Riverdale High School. Veronica's eyes locked on Evie's as she made her way over, and Evie mocked her with a charming yet devilish smile, not daring to back down and break the eye contact.
"Hi, Archie. Veronica." Evie slipped onto the lunch table bench next to the redhead, giving his girlfriend a death stare from across the table.
"Honeybee. Will you be joining us for lunch today?" Evie noticed Jughead and Betty had walked over, and realized that this was also their normal table.
"Do you mind, Jug?" She smiled. She and Jug were good friends, so she knew he wouldn't kick her out.
Jughead smiled, and so did Betty. "More the merrier." Betty smiled as she took a seat next to the female Serpent.
"How are you going to join us for lunch, Honeybee, if you don't have any food? Why don't you take a trip down the lunch line?" Veronica Lodge hissed at Evie through gritted teeth.
Evie quickly rolled her eyes before returning Veronica's faux smile. "Well actually, Ronnie," She began, putting a distasteful emphasis on the Lodge girl's nickname, "I skipped third period to go get some pizza, so, I'm not really hungry."
"Figures." Veronica sighed under her breath, but it was not unnoticed by anyone at the table, including the girl's boyfriend.
"So, Archie." Evie turned towards the redheaded boy, casually placing a hand on his arm. "Are we on for after school today?"
Archie smiled and nodded, reaching down to pull his history book out of his backpack. "Yes, I've actually been looking at some chapters I was hoping you could help me with."
There was a loud noise as phone was slammed down on the lunch table. "What?"
Evie sighed and rolled her eyes at the Lodge girl. "Relax, Veronica. I'm helping Archie study." She laughed, standing up from the table before a catfight would break out. "Although, Red ..." she purred, "I'm not sure if we should study history. I find human anatomy much more fascinating." She backed away from the table and winked at the Andrews boy as three of the four friends looked at her in surprise.
Well, there you go! Chapter two is up! Thoughts on Evie? how do you like how I'm portraying season 2?
