CHAPTER THREE: sorry not sorry

{ " being so bad got me feelin' so good " -- sorry not sorry, demi lovato, 2017 }

"Okay, Red, focus." Evie laughed with a smile. "Focus now."

"I am focusing." Archie grinned, laughing with frustration. "It's just that ... well, I really don't care who the 32nd president of the United States was!"

"Well you should. It was FDR, and he was president during part of the Great Depression and World War Two, two of the biggest periodical events in the 20th century, or in American history in general." Evie muttered the facts. It felt good, knowing that someone did appreciate her intelligence, even if it was just Archie Andrews.

"This is really helping, Honeybee. Thank you." Archie closed his book and sighed. "We've done enough studying for now. Wanna head down to Pop's and grab some milkshakes? I'll buy."

Evie raised an eyebrow. She was surprised the boy wanted to go to Pop's, considering his father had just almost died there, and the Black Hood was still on the loose.

That damn Black Hood. If Evie ever got her hands on him, he'd wish he'd never been born.

"Going to get milkshakes?" Evie smirked at the boy with a raised eyebrow. "Are you sure Lady Lodge approves?"

"Ronnie? Why would she have a problem about it?" Archie asked with a genuinely confused expression.

"Seriously?" Evie snorted. "Please, Andrews, tell me you haven't noticed her extreme control issues ... plus the fact that she obviously hates me."

Archie cleared his throat awkwardly. Even he wasn't oblivious to the hateful tension between the two girls. "It's not like it's a date." He stated, looking at the Serpent girl. "Come on, it's the least I can do to thank you."

Evie supposed it was, since it wasn't like Archie was paying her to do this. "Well, okay. But we have to be quick. I have plans at five." She stood up and packed up some of the books, then looked at him with a flirty smile. "And unfortunately, they don't involve you, Red." She teased.

Archie's face flushed red as she winked at him, and he quickly busied himself with cleaning up his books.

"Not to, um, make you feel uncomfortable or anything, Andrews, but ... are you sure you're up for going to Pop's?" Evie asked quietly.

Archie sighed and nodded at the girl. "Yes, I'm fine." He knew what she meant about Pop's, about his father, about the shooting. Archie didn't want to talk about that. He just wanted to grab a milkshake with a friend. If that's what he and Honeybee were, anyways. He hoped they could be friends.

The two teens grabbed their things and headed out of the library, and then out of the school building. Evie headed towards her motorcycle, then turned to look at Archie. "Do you need a ride?" She asked while slipping her Serpent jacket out of her bag and putting it on.

"Uh, I was just going to walk, but ... sure." Archie rubbed the back of his neck while he looked at the motorcycle. He'd never ridden on one before.

Evie smiled and grabbed the extra helmet out of her saddlebag, then handed it to him.

Archie looked over the helmet, seeing the telltale Serpent logo printed on the back. He sighed and slid it on his head, hoping it wouldn't look too ridiculous with his yellow and blue letterman's jacket.

Evie slid on her own helmet, and Archie laughed as he saw the back of it. There was a Serpent sticker, just like the one he was wearing, but a sticker with a cartoon hand flipping the bird was also featured. The hand was outlined in pink, and Archie found it extremely fitting for the back of Honeybee's motorcycle helmet.

"You ready, Andrews?" Evie murmured, turning to face the redheaded boy with a smirk. She grabbed each of his hands and slid them around her waist. Archie quickly jumped back, removing them.

"Uh, Honeybee --"

"Do you want to fall off? Keep your damn hands on my waist, Andrews!" Evie proclaimed, rolling her eyes at the boy. Archie tentatively slid his arms around her waist, holding on. Evie laughed to herself, figuring he was scared of losing his balls at the hands of his girlfriend if Veronica were to see the two of them.

The motorcycle roared to life, and Evie took off, racing them down the streets of Riverdale towards Pop's Diner. The red lights of the diner soon became visible, and Evie slowed the bike down, parking it outside.

Archie hopped off, removing the helmet and putting it back in Evie's saddlebag. He ran a hand through his flattened fred hair, trying to fix the result of the helmet. Evie, however, slid her helmet off and flipped her dark hair over her shoulder, looking as flawless as she had before she had ever worn the helmet. She smirked at Archie, noticing that he had been watching her, and the boy flushed.

He looked away, his cheeks red. He shouldn't have been looking at her like that. He had a girlfriend. He loved his girlfriend. He loved Ronnie.

But, there was something about Honeybee. She was beautiful, charming, intelligent, funny -- and despite being a part of the Serpents, she had a core that was golden; it was good.

She was radiant.

Archie watched as she casually adjusted her leather jacket, then slid her keys into her pocket. She turned to the redhead, a smile on her face. "How about those milkshakes, Andrews?"

"Uh, right." The blush on the boy's face deepened, and he hurried to open the door for the Serpent girl. Evie hadn't been to Pop's since she'd been back from New York, but she was glad to see that it hadn't changed over time. It looked the same, smelled the same, and she was sure the milkshakes were still just as delicious.

She and Archie sat up on the counter, and Pop walked over to them.

"Well, if it isn't Miss Genevieve!" The old man grinned widely as he looked at his favorite member of the Morgan family.

"Hey, Pop!" She leaned over the counter to give the man a hug.

"I'm glad to see you back in town, kid. Keeping that brother of yours in line, I hope?" Pop laughed, and Evie joined him in a snicker.

"I'm trying." She admitted, as trying to make Sweet Pea do anything was next to impossible, even for her.

"Okay, okay. What can I get you two?" He asked. "Milkshakes?" The two teens nodded at him, and he nodded. "I could tell. The usuals?" The two nodded again, and Pop hurried off.

The usual for Evie was a large butterscotch shake, and Archie, chocolate.

Archie cleared his throat to grab Evie's attention, and the girl looked over at him, raising an eyebrow at his smirking face. "What's your issue, Andrews?" She asked, crossing her arms defensively.

"Genevieve." He purred with a smirk, and Evie had to admit, her real name sounded nice in his voice. "So that's your real name?"

"Might be on my birth certificate, Andrews, but only three people get to call me that, and you're not one of them." She said with a sigh.

"And who would those people be?" Archie laughed.

"Jesus, Pop Tate, and the government, that's who." Evie spoke with a smirk.

"So everyone just calls you 'Honeybee', then? Even your parents? Grandparents?" He questioned.

Evie's confident composure wavered. She didn't want to talk about her family. She didn't talk about any of them except her brother. But as she looked at Archie, into his eyes, she could tell he wasn't prodding her for answers -- he was just genuinely curious, like he was trying to be her friend.

"Um, well..." She cleared her throat and sat up straight, regaining her usual appearance. "My mom died 5 years ago, my dad is in prison, so he doesn't really ever talk to me, and my only surviving grandparent is my Nan who lives in Florida, so ...  and no, they didn't call me 'Honeybee'. That's more a Serpent thing."

"I ... I'm sorry." Archie said with a frown. He was glad she was opening up to him, though. Maybe he did have a chance at this friend thing with her.

"Don't be sorry." Evie sighed, giving the boy a slight smile. "It's life, right? I have no control, you have no control ... why apologize?"

Archie ran a hand through his red hair, then returned Evie's smile. "I guess." He cleared his throat, smiling again at her. "So, what did they call you then, if it wasn't 'Honeybee', and they aren't the three people that called you 'Genevieve'?"

"Doesn't matter." She said with a laugh as Pop Tate brought them their milkshakes. She quickly grabbed the glass and started slurping on it, avoiding any further questions from Archie.

Archie sighed and shook his head, knowing that she wasn't going to answer. He'd find out sooner or later.

There was a slight ding as the door to the diner was pushed open, and out of habit, Evie turned around. The click of expensive heels and the thud of Evie's milkshake hitting the counter brought Archie out of his ice cream induced daydream, and the boy set his glass down. He looked over at Evie, noticing the strange expression on her face.

"Wha-?" He began, then turned around and came face to face with a certain Latina. "Ronnie!"

"Archie."

If looks could kill, Archie Andrews would be a dead man.
