CHAPTER SEVEN: you give love a bad name

{ " an angel's smile is what you sell, you promise me heaven, then put me through Hell " -- you give love a bad name, bonjovi, 1986 }

"Okay, Andrews. Who was Mussolini? How was he connected to World War Two?" Evie asked, looking over the boy's history notes.

"I don't know. He was the ... king of Rome or something." Archie responded.

Evie frowned and narrowed her eyes at him. It was clear his mind was elsewhere. She closed the binder and set it aside, then turned to look at Archie. "No, he was the prime minister of Italy. Are you okay, Red?"

The two were sitting on top of her bed, studying. And yes, they were actually studying. She was trying to help Archie prepare for their upcoming test on World War Two.

Archie looked over at Evie, and she could tell in his eyes he was focused on something other than Benito Mussolini. "I, uh ... I can't stop thinking about the Black Hood." As Evie watched him, she noticed the dark circles under his eyes, and just how tired he looked.

"When was the last time you got a good night's sleep?" She asked. "Archie, you're never going to pass this test tomorrow if you don't get some sleep." She frowned.

He sighed and slammed his history book shut. "Sorry that I think putting an end to the masked man who tried to murder my father is more important than this!"

Evie gave him a cold look. "Oh, you think I don't find it important? You're never going to get anything done unless you get some sleep! It's not healthy." She knew he waited up all night to make sure no one came in and tried to attack his father.

"I have to take care of my dad." He said quietly, looking away from the girl.

Evie frowned and reached out, turning his head to face her. "You have to take care of yourself."

Archie sighed and moved away from her, then bent over and packed up his books in his bag. "I should get going. I have to check on my dad."

"Andrews ..." Evie sighed and shook her head. "You're going to make yourself sick. You need some sleep!"

"Do you ever think that maybe I can't sleep? That maybe, every time I close my eyes, I see his eyes? The Black Hood's? As he shoots my father? Or maybe in my dreams, he's shooting someone else. Everyone I care about. Me, Jug, my mom, Betty ... you."

Evie looked at him with a shocked expression. "Me?"

"Yes, you." Archie said, turning to look at the girl. "You think I don't care about you?"

Evie shrugged. "I'm not used to having many people that do." She admitted.

Archie shot her a smile. "Well, that's changing, because I care about your well-being very much."

Evie smiled. "I care about your well-being too, Andrews. That's why I want you to get some sleep."

Archie smirked and began to lay back. "I guess that's not a bad idea."

"Oh no, not in my bed. I meant at your home, Red." Evie said with a laugh.

"Oh come on." Archie sat up and wrapped his arms around Evie's waist and then pulled her back down with him. "Isn't this a better idea?" He murmured into her ear.

"Oh, don't start what you can't finish. Didn't they tell you, Andrews?" She laughed as she turned towards him. "Never play games with a Serpent." She whispered.

Archie raised an eyebrow. "What about never play games with a bull-"

Evie shoved him with such force that the redhead flew right off her bed, falling onto her carpet with a thud. "Don't you dare say bulldog, or so help me God." She snorted.

Archie sat up, rubbing his elbow. "Oww." He laughed. "What's wrong with being a bulldog? You're one now, officially."

Evie scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Just because I go to Riverdale High, Home of the Bulldogs, does not mean I am a bulldog. I'm a Serpent through and through." She said. It was a sore spot, talking about how the Serpents had been forced into Riverdale High. Nobody wanted them there, and none of them wanted to be there. "I can't wait to get out of this town."

"You really don't like it here?" Archie asked, looking up at her from on the floor.

"I liked it better in the city." She admitted.

"So why did you come back, then?" Archie questioned.

"I lost my scholarship at boarding school. I had no choice." She cleared her throat as she looked up at the ceiling, picturing the day that she ruined her educational life.

"What happened?" Archie asked.

"It's a long story." Evie stated, the events already playing back in her mind.

{ seven weeks previous}

"Hey, Evie." Evie's best friend and roommate at Weston, a girl from Brooklyn named Natalie, called from across their room. "What's wrong with you?"

Evie had been stewing in her own personal fury for three days. She was restless; her creative juices were flowing, threatening to break free of her brain. She was itching to do something bad.

"I'm bored." She sighed, slamming her history book shut.

"You're bored? If this is how you act when you're bored, Evie, then you've been bored for most of the week." Nat scoffed. "What do you want to do, then?"

"Let's do something big. Something that will get us in trouble ... but not too much trouble." Evie said with a smirk.

Natalie sat up quickly, dropping her cell phone as it landed with a thud on the ground. "Shit. Seriously?"

"Hell yes, seriously." Evie laughed.

"Let's do it." Nat hopped off of her bed with a grin, then froze. "Wait, what are we going to do?"

"That's what I've been thinking about." Evie admitted.

"Wait, the dean is a dick ... let's do something to screw with him. He's got an unnatural love for that car of his." Natalie laughed.

A devilish smirk crossed Evie's eyes, as the plan that would cause her demise quickly crossed her mind.

{present day}

"And that, Red, is how I got sent back to Riverdale." Evie sighed as she looked away from the boy.

"Why did you do it?" Archie asked. "I mean, you were going in such a good direction, and then...."

Ever glanced over at him. "Well, I'm trouble, Andrews. Plain and simple. If I sit still too long, my mischievous brain starts thinking a bit." She looked over at the redhead, the goody two shoes she had somehow gotten tangled up with, both physically and emotionally.

The worst thing Archie could have possibly done to himself was get mixed up with Genevieve Morgan.

"I'm sorry." Archie murmured in her ear, his voice causing her body to shiver slightly.

"Don't be sorry for anything, Red." Evie smirked, sitting up so she was straddling him. "Everything I've done, I did to myself. Including messing around with you."

"Oh, and how is this going to cause you harm?" Archie asked with a snort.

"Veronica Lodge likes to inflict pain on those that mess with her playthings." She smirked.

The boy scoffed. "I wasn't one of Ronnie's playthings."

"Ronnie? Oh my God, gag me now." Elvis snickered.

"What?" Archie laughed, not quite knowing what she was laughing about.

"That insufferable nickname! 'Ronnie'! A cutesy little nickname that she uses to pretend she's so innocent! It's pretentious." She groaned.

"What, like 'Honeybee'?" Archie teased.

Evie scoffed. "I never said I was innocent, Andrews. In fact, I think you know I'm quite the opposite." She purred, looking down on him with a seductive smirk.

Archie grinned up at her as she leaned down, covering his mouth with hers.

What was he getting himself into?
