THE STRUGGLE OF READING
Is it just me, or do other people struggle to read past the first few pages of a book? And I'm talking like, not fanfiction, where instead of being able to bypass all of the contextual stuff you need when starting out a new book — like characters and setting and world building — you need to climb a mountain of writing to get past it all. Which I hate, considering I have the attention span of a cracked up squirrel, and therefore cannot sit through ten-twenty pages ( which is a good five thousand words or so ) of who is who and what is what and how the world came to be.
I just want to get to the good stuff, the action, the romance, the ooey gooey candy centre of a book. Another reason I cannot for the life of me bother with starting new books.
It's a curse I must sadly carry with me for the rest of my life, picking up new books I want to read and putting theme back down in the exact same minute.
If you think I'm kidding, I'm not, people. Right now I have like, four piles of books I need to read, including Before I Fall, Call Me By Your Name, Enigma Variations, To Sir With Love, Charlotte's Web ( I know, I know, don't judge me I wasn't much into reading as a child ), The Simple Gift, Black Boy, The Mortal Instruments, The Help, Love Simon,The 5th Wave, Me Before You, At Swim, Two Boys, the entire Lord Of The Rings trilogy and the Harry Potter Series ( I will read it eventually, don't kill me yet ) just to name a few. The only one I have finished is The Secret History, and that's only because the bloody length of it taunted me, like that shit's two hundred thousand words.
It's shameful I haven't read a few of these yet, but I procrastinate okay! It's hard. Pity me and my lack of motivation to do anything productive.
Also, before I go, take pleasure in the fact that I'm currently surrounded by books so I could name them all and that I can feel the weight of their judgement bearing down on my shoulders.
Bonne Matinée!
