Twenty Seven - Not Like You

It's been a week since John moved in with me, and honestly, I'm really not minding it too much. I actually really enjoy his company.

Of course, his company brings Lafayette and Hercules's company as well, and they're just as loud as they were in college, but it was sort of nice now.

Right now, I was working on editing yet another awful essay by John Jay while John Laurens was sitting on my couch watching TV. He paused the TV and I felt a hand placed on my shoulder.

"Hey, Alex, you've been working on that paper for hours. Why don't you take a break?" John says softly.

I shake my head. "As much as I'd love to, I lose my job if I don't finish this by 3pm."

John sighs. "So what? You obviously hate the job, and you have to work for the person you hate the most."

"2nd most." I correct him. He chuckles.

"Oh, that's right, Carrie is very high on that list. I don't blame you." He the leans his arm on my chair and reads over my shoulder. I swat him away. "Alex, seriously, though. Whatever happened to being a lawyer?"

I frown and look up at him. "I... Being a lawyer just wasn't cut out for me." I answer simply before turning back to my paper.

"Well, why not? You were always very good at arguing-"

"Arguing isn't the only part of being a lawyer, John." I snap at him.

"Yeah, I know that but-"

"Just drop it, John. It doesn't matter anyway, I'm working at the New York Times and making a living."

There was a pause. "Do you like your job?" John asks sheepishly.

I sigh. "John, you don't need to like your job, you just need to make money."

John laughs quietly. "Alex, that is the worst motto I've ever heard. Of course you should enjoy your job! Otherwise you're just miserable."

I shrug. "I'm not miserable."

"You are too."

"No, I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

"No-"

"Alex, you definitely are." John defends. "How many cuss words have you mumbled in the last half hour alone while working on that?" He asks.

I send a quick glare at him, knowing he was right. I then sigh and close my laptop. "Fine. I'll take a quick five minute break, but then I'm not leaving this seat till I finish it."

John shakes his head. "Nope, I'm taking you to lunch."

"Lunch? But John, I only have two hours left-" I whine.

"And you could finish this in five minutes if you would stop stressing over it so much. You don't get a choice, let's go to lunch."

I groan and stand up, grabbing my wallet from on top of my desk and walking out with John.

Timeskip brought to you by saving a life.

"May I take your order?" A small waitress walks over to us. She had dark brown hair and a red top with light blue jeans. I tilt my head, as she looked familiar.

"Maria?" John asks.

She looks at John and then at me and she smiles. "Oh, John, Alex! How are you two?"

Oh, now I know who she is. She's the girl who's boyfriend beat me up on the first day of school. We never really talked much.

"Wait, how do you even remember me? We said maybe two words to each other..." I ask, thinking out loud.

Maria blushes and stutters. "U-uh...Oh, you know.. We still went to the same college, r-right?" She chuckles nervously and then pulls out her small notebook. "Anyway, could I take your order please?"

"Sure." I say, not wanting to drag the conversation on any longer. "What's the quickest meal to make?"

"That would be scrambled eggs." She says, seeming glad that we made it past the awkward conversation.

I smile at her. "Then that's what I'll have. I'm in a rush."

I look over to see John giving me a small glare. He then turns to Maria and smirks. "And what would the meal that takes the longest time to cook be?" He asks.

"The sirloin steak, it takes like twenty minutes." Maria informs us, raising an eyebrow.

He looks me in the eye and nods. "That's what I'll have, then." I glare at him.

Maria writes down our orders and then walks to the back and I shake my head. "I cannot believe you right now."

"Spend some quality time with your friend, Alex." John says, crossing his arms.

I scoff. "John, I have to write-"

"Nope!"

"No, I have to-"

"Uh-uh."

"But John-"

"No, no talking about work." He scolds. "Let's talk about something else instead."

I sigh and look around. "Like what?" I ask after a short while.

He smiles. "Well, I wanna know everything that had happened in the last five years. We haven't really had too much time to talk, and I want to know like, everything."

I groan. "You already know the basics about everyone, why do you need detail?"

He chuckles. "No Alex, I mean with you. Like, what have you been doing the past five years?"

I raise an eyebrow. "Well, I don't know. Could you be any more broad?"

"Well, we could start off simple." He suggests and I shrug in agreement. "Well, uh, any lucky guys or girls?" He asks, fidgeting with the sleeves of his shirt.

I blush lightly. "Ah, uh...No, not really. The only person I've talked to these past years was Eliza..And we're just friends so.." He nods slowly. "What about- what about you? Besides Carrie, of course."

He blushes madly. "Uh, well...You know.." He clears his throat. "Before I got engaged to Carrie, I met a guy named Francis Kinloch..." He mumbles.

I nod and place a fake smile on my face. Of course he was able to move on, we're not even technically exes, since we only dated for a day. "That's cool..I'm assuming you two broke up because you had to get with Carrie?" I ask, straining myself from frowning.

He shakes his head. "Uh, no it didn't really work. We dated for like 6 months and then uh...I realized.."

He pauses and I tilt my head. "You realized...what?" I ask.

He sighs. "I realized he wasn't anything like you.."
