Thirty One - Unprofessional and Unexpected

It's been a week since Eliza has spoken to me last. She won't return my calls, answer my texts, or even look at me when I enter the coffee shop. I knew she liked me and all, but I had no idea how bad it actually was for her..

On the other hand, John and I were still together, and have done some very interesting things to relieve stress...

Like yoga. Yoga is so stupid, but John enjoyed it, so I went.

As for job hunting, I finally decided I was going to try to be a lawyer again, and John decided he wanted to work at an aquarium or something. His original plan was to be a marine biologist, but he never got the degree for it and wasn't sure he wanted to go back to college.

I groan as I mess with the tie around my neck, trying to figure out how to make it look nice while mumbling a string of course words.

John comes in and chuckles, grabbing the tie from my hands. "Alex, relax, you're going to be great." He says in a calming tone.

"Right, but what if I'm not?" I ask, fidgeting with the sleeves of my white button up shirt.

He leans in and kisses me gently before pulling away. "They'd be crazy not to take you, Alex. You're the most argumentative person I've ever met, and would be a fantastic lawyer."

I smile and blush. "Thanks, John." I sigh and put my jacket on before looking up at him. "What about you? Are you nervous for your interview?" I ask.

"I mean, kind of? I don't know, it's just an aquarium, I almost feel over qualified for it." He chuckles. "But hey, if it means I'll get to be around turtles, it'll be worth it."

I smile and peck him on the lips. "Okay, and we're meeting for dinner after our interviews at your favorite restaurant?"

He nods. "Yep! You'll love it, I promise."

I giggle and then hug him. "Alright, I'll see you later, then." I kiss him sweetly before pulling away and waving. "Good luck, John!"

"Good luck, Alex." He waves back and I walk through the hallways.

Timeskip brought to you by a sad invention (it wasn't real, I know)

"Alexander Hamilton?" A lady calls from a clipboard before looking around.

I stand up and she motions for me to follow her. I then continue walking behind her as she leads me to the office and I walk in, smiling brightly.

"Hello, sir, I-" I freeze. "Burr?" I ask.

Aaron looks up at me and smiles brightly. "Alexander! So good to see you again!" He chuckles and stands up, shaking my hand.

"Please, please sit down." He says before closing the door and sitting down at the desk. "So, how are you?"

I sit down, unsure of what to do. "Uh, actually, I'm here for an interview...Did I get the wrong address...?"

He smiles and shakes his head. "No, Alex. You actually applied here at my law firm. Well, sort of mine. I'm not the main man, but I'm pretty high up, and I handle the interviews."

I nod slowly. "So...When did this happen?"

"Well, Alex. If you came around more often, you'd know that I started working here around four years ago." He sighs. "I was going to tell you, but you had given up on being a lawyer, so I didn't want to rub it in."

This is all so weird...Why is he talking so much? He's more the silent type...

I chuckle nervously. "So...You agreed to get me an interview?" I ask.

"Hell yeah, man. I got your back! I was excited when I saw your name, mainly because you are 100 times better at defending someone than our other employees. But also because I'm glad you're back in the law business."

I nod again. "Okay...So should we do the interview then..?"

"Nah, you've got the job. Your interview is your previous arguments in debate class." Aaron shrugs.

"Mr. Burr, that seems highly unprofessional-"

"Alex, it's fine. I'm in charge for a reason." He stands up. "Also, call me Aaron. We are friends for Christ's sake."

I nod, still completely flustered by all of this. "Uh...So can I go?" I ask.

He nods. "Yeah, I'll text you and let you know when you start and all of that stuff."

"Okay...See you later then."

Timeskip brought to you by the rest being chum (how funny that this is a song about being a lawyer)

I sit at the table and anxiously wait for John to come to the restaurant he had told me about. I look around and examine my surroundings.

It's a really nice place, I must admit. John always did have a classy taste, probably because he grew up rich. Well, rich but he was raised terribly. Luckily he turned out alright.

I continue to look around when my eyes land on a familiar looking man. He was walking towards me, not yet noticing me, so I stared at him a bit longer. He was quite older than me, but he has dark brown hair, dark eyes, a sort of tan skin tone, and his height was probably around six foot.

He sees me staring at him and he frowns, walking up to my table. "What, do you have some problem?" He asks, getting all defensive.

I raise my hands up. "No, no, I'm sorry I was just-"

His face softens and he looks me up and down. "A-Alexander?" He asks.

I raise an eyebrow skeptically and ask, "How do you know my name? Who are you?"

He lets out a breath of relief and he smiles widely. "Well, you might know the name James Hamilton..?" He asks.

I shake my head. "No, my brother died, you're not James."

He shakes his head back at me. "No, I'm James Sr."

I stare at him in shock, not sure wether to believe him or not. "D-dad?"
