Thirty Five - The Case
"I just...I can't believe I'm already put on a case. Normally that doesn't happen on your first day." I say to Aaron as we walk through the halls of the court building.
"Well, yes I know it's not normal, but this is a really tough case and I figure nobody else could do it but you." He explains.
"Wow, you really have a lot of faith in me..." I mumble, looking down at my cuffed sleeves.
He shrugs. "I mean, yeah. I know you, Alex. You could convince anyone, no matter if they hate you or not."
I raise an eyebrow. "Well, not everyone. Jefferson really hated me." I chuckle.
"Yeah, well, he lost his best employee, and he knows it. I stopped in to visit him and he was stressed beyond belief." He says, smiling at people who passed by.
I was going to question him about why he was visiting Jefferson, but decided I didn't have enough time to. "Right...So tell me the case again?"
"Murder trial. Miss Veronica Sawyer is being accused of murder for three students of a college here, but she claims it was her ex boyfriend instead." He says. "You will be defending Miss Sawyer."
"Yeesh...Do we have any evidence?" I ask, looking around the halls.
He sighs. "Unfortunately, all we have are the forged suicide notes, which were proven to be frauds. There's also the gun used to kill one of the students with her fingerprints on it."
I groan. "Now I know why you said it was difficult."
"Just...Try not to show the obvious to her. I really don't think it's possible for her to win this case, but she's only 19, so try and give her the benefit of the doubt."
I nod. We approach a room and Burr looks at me. "Ready?" He asks.
I nod yet again. "As ready as I'll ever be."
We walk into the room to see a young girl with dark black hair pacing the room. She stops and looks at us and smiles. "Oh my God, you must be my lawyer!"
I nod at her. "Yes, I am. I'm Alexander Hamilton. Miss Sawyer, please take a seat."
She nods and sits down and I sit down across from her. Burr closes the door and sits next to me. "Now, Veronica, listen. If you want any chance of freedom, you need to be completely honest and open with me. It may be touchy, but I need to know all of the details if I'm going to convince the jury you're innocent."
She sighs. "I didn't kill them. I hated them, sure, but I never killed them. Not a single one."
"So you knew the three that died?" I ask, grabbing my notebook and a green pen.
"Yes, I did. Heather Chandler was a bitch to me, and Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeny tried to rape me and then spread rumors that they did." She says, crossing her arms.
My eyes widen a bit. "Okay, I think we need to keep that part out. It gives you motive, and it gives the jury a reason to be suspicious."
She nods. "I'll try to keep that part out...But I can't lie under oath."
I nod. "I'm aware, Veronica." I then click my pen and get ready to write. "The two males were murdered the same night, correct?" She nods. "And the female was murdered a different night?" She nods again. "And where were you during these murders?"
She bites her lip and then sighs. "I was uh...I was there."
"Where?" I ask.
"With my boyfriend at the time. I watched him kill them."
I see Burr's eyes widen and I roll my eyes. So much for letting her hope she'll be found innocent.
She saw his reaction too and frowned. "I'm going to jail, aren't I?"
"Well, maybe. I can't lie to you, the evidence isn't looking very good." I sigh and start writing down what she had told me so far. "Who is your ex boyfriend?"
"His name is Jason Dean. He's probably still roaming New York, thinking of his next victim." She says, a clear hatred for him showing in her tone.
"Tell me about this Jason." I say, writing his name and underlining it.
"He moves around a lot, has a psychotic dad, his mom died. I don't know how many he killed before he came here, but his dad is known for blowing up many, many buildings." She explains.
"And why were you with him during the murders?" I ask.
"He...He tricked me." She says, looking down at the table ashamed. "I thought we were playing pranks on them, I never thought he would've killed them.." She then looks up, glaring at nothing. "Although, I should've known it at least after Heather's death. Fucking 'Ich Luge' bullets. You know what 'ich luge' means in German? It mean 'I lie.' He fucking told me he was lying and I was too dumb to figure it out."
I set down my notebook and look up at her. "Miss Sawyer, no need to get angry with yourself. You know now, and that's all that matters. What did he tell you Ich Luge meant?"
"He said they were tranquillizers. We were going to make it look like they killed themselves to humiliate them, and then JD used real bullets instead." She sighs.
"And how would you have humiliated them?" I ask.
"Well, you know. We made it look like they were gay for-"
"I'm sorry, what?" I ask, getting slightly angry.
She looks up at me and raises an eyebrow. "Well, we made it look like they were lovers so that they would be humiliated."
I nod and look to the side. "You think that two males loving each other is humiliating?"
Her eyes widen and she shakes her head. "Oh, goodness no, I didn't mean it like that. It's just, they were homophobic and so it was supposed to be ironic. I have nothing against-"
"Put down the shovel, Miss Sawyer." Burr warns her as I cross my arms.
"How did Miss Chandler die?" I ask, straying away from the whole her thinking being gay is gross topic. I'm a lawyer, I have to keep my dignity.
"Right, well she did something to me and so I went over to give her a hangover cure. I mixed up just orange juice and milk, but JD put liquid drain cleaner in the mug. I ended up grabbing the wrong cup and giving her the drain cleaner instead..." She explains, still feeling uneasy.
"Well, Miss Sawyer, I will try my best. We will work on your statement for the witness stand tomorrow, but as of right now I have other stuff to attend to." I stand up and close my journal. I go to exit, but am interrupted.
"Wait," Veronica says. I turn towards her and she bites her lip. "Am I...Am I going to jail?"
"I'm going to try my best to keep you out of there." I repeat before walking out of the room, Burr following close behind me.
"Well, what do you think?" Burr asks.
"I think we've got an idiotic girl on our hands, but if we play our cards right, they may at the very least go easy on her." I say, holding my journal close to my chest. "Anyway, I have to get home. Thank you again, Burr."
He chuckles. "I told you to call me Aaron, and it's no problem."
Timeskip brought to you by the bill of rights (which I wrote!)
"John, I'm home!" I call out before freezing at the sight in front of me. "What in the world?" I ask.
