Ten - Almost Perfect
"It was crazy, Eliza. I literally just woke up this morning, in his arms, and he was like 'let's go on a date.' What am I supposed to do about that?" I ask before calling out a customer's name and handing them their coffee.
"Well, Alex-" she pauses to blend up a frappuccino and then looks up at me. "It sounds like you really like him. You seem very, very happy about how all of this turned out."
"I just...I don't know I don't really get close to people.." I frown before putting whipped cream on the frappe Eliza had just made.
Eliza shrugs. "You're pretty close to me." She calls out the customer's name and then hands them their frappuccino, smiling politely at them. "I'm just saying, you shouldn't be afraid of going out with John. Are you two official yet?"
I shake my head and sigh. "No, not really... It's just so weird to me because John has liked me for so long, yet he doesn't want to call me his boyfriend yet."
Eliza sighs and places her hand on my shoulder. "Alex, stop stressing. Maybe he's just waiting until it's legal to date you. You know, since you turn eighteen tomorrow?"
"Oh, shut up." I say, smiling. Her and John and Washington so far were the only ones who knew I was not an adult yet, even though I was sure my secret would be out by now.
"What are you even doing for your birthday?" She asks, going to the back as someone else takes our places in the front. I follow her to the back and shrug.
"I mean, I'm not really sure. I haven't celebrated my birthday in a while.." I say, sitting down on the ground.
Eliza sits across from me and tilts her head. "Well, what did you do for your birthday last year?"
"I uh...I don't really remember." I lie, knowing I was preparing for the hurricane that was supposed to hit our town.
Literally two days after my birthday was when the hurricane hit us, so I was stocking up on food and water in my brother's house on my birthday. It wasn't the best birthday, but it didn't really matter anyway. My mom was the one who made my birthdays a big deal and after she passed, I stopped caring.
"Really? You don't remember?" She asks, not seeming to believe me.
"I mean, come on. Do you remember your seventeenth birthday?" I ask, chuckling lightly.
She nods excitedly. "I do. Peggy and Angelica threw a surprise party for me and it had the cutest decorations ever."
I sigh and shrug. "I don't know.." I look up at the clock and then stand up. "Anyway my shift is over. I'll text you later?"
Eliza nods. "Yes, and we will figure out something to do for your eighteenth birthday."
I chuckle lightly. "Whatever you say, Eliza." I take off my apron and then walk outside of the building, only to see John standing there and smiling like an idiot. "John? What are you doing here?" I ask.
He blushes lightly. "Uh, Eliza told me when you were off of work, so I thought I'd come and walk you back to the dorm?"
I shrug. "I mean, why not? You're already here."
He smiles and I begin walking next to him. "So, how was work?" He asks.
"Pretty boring, nothing ever happens in that cafe." I sigh dramatically and John laughs.
There was a moment of silence when our hands brushed each other and I blush lightly. Suddenly I feel John slowly and gently grab my hand, interlocking our fingers. I try to keep my blushing under control as I continue walking.
"So uh..You really just came to walk me back?" I ask, hoping he had at least something to talk about.
"Well uh, I just...I, uh.." He sighs and then stops, grabbing my other hand so we were looking at each other. "I just..."
"What?" I ask, looking up at him slightly. He reaches into his hoodie pocket and pulls out a small box.
He opens it up to reveal a keychain that had a heart on it. Nothing too fancy, just something subtle I could add to my collection of keychains.
"I just wanted to ask if you would officially be my boyfriend.." He says, blushing like crazy.
I smile and nod excitedly. "Yes, of course, John." I stand on my tippie toes to kiss him.
He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me in closer before pulling away and smiling at me. "Oh, thank goodness I was so worried.."
I laugh and then place my heels on the ground, grabbing his hand. "Why?" I ask.
"Well, I didn't think you'd actually say yeah.." He chuckles, blushing lightly.
We begin to walk back to the dorm and I smile. "John, I was worried you weren't going to ask. Ask Eliza, she had to listen to nothing but my rants." I chuckle nervously.
We get back to the dorm rooms and John opens the door for me. I walk in and plop down on the couch and John sits down next to me, smiling.
He turns on the TV and then wraps his arm around my shoulder, allowing for me to cuddle up to him. This was perfect, everything was perfect.
Well, I thought it was, but then there was a knock on the door.
