Track 9 : Side Chick

BRIA

Chicago mornings smelled different than Ohio's. And, for some reason, the weather wasn't as cold. The airport had a lot of traffic to be a Tuesday. I caught myself purposely stepping on the back of people's shoes to make them walk faster. It's just something about a person carelessly strolling in a time of chaos that gets under my skin.
Before I made it to the lobby, I spotted Vinnie holding up a sign with my name on it. He was surrounded by security and wasn't phased by the attention he was getting from fans. Once he recognized me, he held the sign up higher. By the time I approached, he had a swarm of women surrounding him. Had he not had a sign, I don't think I would've been able to find him.
Security split up the crowd and let me through. Vinnie grabbed my luggage, handed the sign to one of his security, then took my hand. We ran to his car to avoid having to drive around fans.
"Welcome to my world." Vinnie said once we were safe in the backseat of the truck.
To my surprise, we weren't alone. Durk and his girlfriend were sitting in the row behind us. You'd think they were on their way to a red carpet event the way they wore designer early in the morning. All I had on was a pastel pink velour tracksuit from Fashionnova, and I called myself trynna look cute for Dayvin. Well, of course my hair and make-up was up to code, but who can compete with designer?
Royale's jacket was a brand I've never seen nor heard of before. The fabric used to make it had such a quality that it could be worn as a coat, and don't get me started on the fur.
Durk had to be wearing every piece of jewelry he owned. There wasn't a name he missed to put around his neck. The couple's ensemble was color coordinated and strategic. Her distressed-jean thigh high boots matched his pants, while the red graphic hoodie he wore under his jacket matched her jumpsuit.
They sat with their hands clasped to each others and Royale's head never left Durk's shoulder, not even while they greeted me. If they weren't going through so much due to the media, they'd look like the perfect couple. Even a blind man can see the love between them. #Duroyale still held its own weight to the name. It's not too many people willing to stick by your side in this world, especially not after what they've gone through in just a weeks time.
"I hope you got an appetite." Vinnie said.
"Boo, its your lucky day. Cause, I'm starving. I ain't ate since yesterday." I said.
The driver pulled up to a restaurant that didn't have windows to view the inside. Judging by the valet standing out front servicing customers with nicer cars than a NASCAR race, I was under the impression we were on the rich side of Chicago. One of Vinnie's security assisted me out of the truck, then Vinnie took over as we walked to the entrance. Durk and Royale walked beside us hand and hand.
The inside of the restaurant had a mysterious vibe. From the outside, you'd never guess how high the ceilings were, you couldn't fathom the art pieces displayed above each booth, nor could you pretend you knew what sculptures were scattered across the room within the hand crafted tables and chairs.
The lights were dimmed, but the colors from the wall aquarium that sat in the back with the larger booths projected across the room. Until this day, I don't know what those fish were called. Although it was morning, the candles at the single couple tables gave it a late night dinner vibe. Then, in the far corner, sat a pianist playing a beautiful melody.
"Wow, I was not dressed for this..." I said.
"It's not about what you wearing." Vinnie said.
Our waiter showed us to our booth. Yeah, we already had a reservation. Kudos to my boo Dayvin for going all out for our first date. It didn't even matter that it was a double date.
"Girl, Durk made me get all dressed up like we going to a Celebrity breakfast. I thought we had another meeting with Mona, got a lil nervous." Royale said.
"Damn, we cant do nice things?" Durk said.
"I'm not saying that, I just think you on to something." She said. She smiled and scanned her menu. "Cause babyyyy, these prices ain't no Chicago prices."
"Sis, I'll have whatever you having cause I might have a heart attack if I look at that menu." I said. Everyone laughed and Royale nodded in agreement.
"Baby, get whatever you like." Vinnie said as he handed me a menu.
After I got over the shock of a breakfast platter costing more than my rent and utilities combined, I ordered a platter that I expected to taste like heaven. Once everyone placed their order, we all admired the atmosphere.
"Oh my goodness, these fishes are beautiful." Royale said. She rubbed her hand across the glass over a glowing blue and neon green fish.
"You think they can hear the music?" Vinnie said.
"I think so. Music is a vibration anyone can hear and feel. Look how calm they are. I bet they don't even eat each other." Durk said.
"I agree, the piano is mad beautiful. Its setting the mood for everybody. It's kinda hard to be angry while listening to this." I said.
"I don't listen to this type of music, but I will say its relaxing." Vinnie said.
"Boo, you missing out on real music. It starts with the instruments." I said.
"You right, but you say that like you know how to play one." Durk Said.
"I do. Well, I learned how to play piano when I was a kid and spent a year or two in Band in middle school. I can tell you which instrument is what just by listening to a song. No matter the genre." I said.
"Okay, lil miss musical genius." Royale said.
"Right, I might have to bring you to the studio with me one of these days." Vinnie said. "You still know how to play?"
"That'll be nice." I said with a smile. "I'll never forget how to play, even though it's been a while. My dad was a musician, he taught me when I was really young. I haven't played since he passed when I was 13. But, I can for you one day."
"Wow, I'm sorry for your loss. Let me know if listening to the music triggers you in any way. We can leave right now, if you want. I should've asked more questions before reserving this place, I thought it would be perfect for you." Vinnie said. He grabbed my hand and caressed it with his thumb.
"Thank you for your concern, but it is perfect. I trust your judgment, and you'd know if I was triggered. I could hear the music from outside, I was prepared. This reminds me so much of my dad. But, that's what I like about this. I wish his funeral felt like this." I said.
"You and him must've been really close." Royale said with a comforting smile.
"Yeah," I nodded. "My mom worked a lot and I didn't see much of her until he died. Most of my childhood memories are of me and my dad. He'd take me on the road with him sometimes, and let me watch his shows. My favorite times of us are the small moments. You know, the fact that he never made a promise to me that he didn't keep. Or, how he was at every band concert or school event I participated in. My memory of him is starting to get a lil fuzzy, but he loved me. We lived in poverty and didn't have much. But, I know there's not a day that he allowed me to skip a meal, even when he had to himself."
"He sounds like a great man." Durk said.
"He wasn't." I said as I wiped the tears that escaped my eyes. "As a kid, you think your parents are superheros. My mom, she could've been. She sacrificed her time with me to give me the leverage to do what I want with my life now. Yet, I hated her for not being there. My Dad, he drank. A lot. He didn't think I noticed because he tried his best to hide it. But, I wouldn't be a pro at dealing with hangovers if it wasn't for him... And, he hated my mom. I still don't know why. He never laid a hand on me, his aggression seemed to be fueled towards my mom for whatever reason."
"Have you ever asked your mom about it?" Vinnie said.
"No, for what?" I said. "Knowing what I know now about being in an abusive relationship, the answers I'm looking for died with my dad. But regardless of it all, I still miss him."
    "I feel that." Durk said.
"Yeah, me too. More than I should." Royale said.
"You can't help that you loved your dad. He's your dad. I still wish mine was right here with me and he's been locked up for forever. He ain't never getting out." Vinnie said. He squeezed my hand as I rubbed his back. Durk smacked his lips and stared at Vinnie.
"Yeah, well. He chose to not be in yo life. At least her dad made her a priority." Durk said.
"Bae!" Royale said as she nudged him. "Don't say that. He was your father too, you know."
"That's funny coming from you, Tay-Tay. I know it was hard for his favorite child to lose him, but you're not gonna get much sympathy from me. My dad didn't choose his prison sentence, and he ain't break no promises either." Vinnie said.
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" Durk said as his eyebrows guarded his eyes. Vinnie shook his head and scoffed, then shrugged.
"Nothing, man." He said. I wrapped my arms around his neck and I pulled him into a hug. He let out a deep breath as he wrapped his arms around my waist. His body was tense and he squeezed hard, but I wasn't letting go. I rubbed his back until he was calm.
"You wanna leave?" I said. He shook his head, so I continued to hold him.
"I lost my mom not too long ago." Royale blurted. Vinnie raised up and we both focused our attention on her. "She wasn't the best mom. My auntie kinda raised me. But, I still wish I had more time with her. She was just misunderstood and I knew she loved me, and I loved her. I just couldn't let her in to be able to hurt me anymore. She was all I had most my life. If we weren't such opposites, I'd say she was my Best friend. Confusing, right?"
"No, I get it." I said.
"Family is complicated. we all have our problems." Vinnie said. "Best we can do is be there for each other. You never know when's the last time you'll ever see them."
"Now, I can drink to that." Royale said as she raised her glass.
"To dysfunctional families and childhood trauma." I said as I raised my glass.
"And, loyalty."Vinnie said as he raised his glass. A jittery Durk snapped out of his trance and sighed.
"And, love." He said as he raised his glass. Royale smiled and nodded. We all clanked our wine glasses and took a sip. While Royale was checking on Durk's well-being. I was concerned about why I was drinking wine before I even had breakfast.
"Okay, is it just me? Or, has it been mad long since we ordered?" I said.
"Yeah same, I never waited this long for food."Royale said.
After checking the time, Vinnie and Durk clapped twice in unison. Seconds later, waiters were coming out, filling our table up with fresh food and new drinks.
"Well, if instant service was an option, I would've said something sooner." I said. Royale laughed and nodded in agreement. Vinnie joined in but he reverted to his straight face soon after. Durk was then more jittery and insisted that we all just dig in. "Oh, this is heaven. I can't believe I thought IHOP was luxury." The eggs were so fluffy and the waffles were soft as pancakes. Even their syrup tasted like its one of those secret recipes people die trying to get their hands on.
Everyone stuffed their faces while the pianist cleared our thoughts with Canon D major. I reminisced the moments of playing piano with my dad and thought about how'd he feel about me dating a man who's also in the music industry. Actually, every boyfriend I've had has been in the industry. So, I guess that says a lot about myself.
While I was having a moment of self-realization, the guys were fixated on Royale eating her dessert. Once she made it to the middle of her slice of red velvet cake with strawberry frosting, her fork discovered something.
"What's this?" she said as she raked out what looked like a broken piece of metal. She gasped when she revealed a large diamond that sparkled in the light. "You didn't."
"I did." Durk nodded. My eyes widened and Vinnie was grinning.  Royale cleaned the ring off with a napkin and shook her head in disbelief.
"Durk, stop playing with me." she said. The pianist changed songs and was accompanied by a singer who began singing This Is Why I Love You by MAJOR. Royale's eyes filled up with tears and her hands trembled as they covered her face. A camera crew came out to film and they snapped a few pictures. I was in utter shock. I wanted to cry with her.
"Royale," Durk said as he climbed out the booth and got down on one knee. "I know this moment is long overdue and I owe you a million more like this. But, I love you with all my heart. You been riding by my side since ramen noodle and opening act days. I appreciate all your support and the success I experience wouldn't be enjoyed without you. No matter what problems we face, I want us to come to a solution as a team. This shit is forever, and you the only woman I want representing my name. There is no Durk without Royale, and I mean that. You hear me?" Royale nodded with tears rolling down her cheeks. The couple in the booth next to us handed her some kleenex for her to dab her make-up. "Fuck all this TV shit, you know me. There is nothing and nobody that can come between us and take your place. Your place in my heart and my life is infinite. For as long as you want it. So, will you marry me?"
I managed to let a tear of my own escape. Love is contagious when it's true. But, watching a woman having her moment of pure happiness and receiving the appreciation she deserves hits a soft spot for me. She got to dress up and feel beautiful in the morning, her man matched her energy and rewarded her with gratitude before the day even started.
Then, the moment had it's bitter undertone. And, I saw it in Vinnie's eyes. A loyal brother who prepared the event and clearly outdid himself.  He should have still had that smug of pride on his face, maybe as emotional as I was. But, his jaw was clenched and the longer Durk talked, the less enthused he became. It was like watching myself when I'd witnessed my dad lying to my mom. Heartbreaking, to say the least.
"Yes." Royale said with a nod and she burst into an ugly cry as Durk grabbed hold of her. They kissed and he slid the ring on her finger. Vinnie faked a smile once again for the cameramen who were getting every angle possible. It didn't take much longer for me to get the hint and play the role I was brought there to play. By the time we made it to the car, I was #Duroyale's #1 hype-man.

CALYPSO

For the next few days after what happened with Durk and I, he fell off the face of the earth. With no phone but a landline to get in touch with him, calling him wasn't an option. When he said he wanted to wipe the slate clean, he meant it. But, a visit for reassurance would've been nice.
The walls in my suite grew smaller the longer I stayed waiting to hear back from him. Time moved slower every minute and I dreaded my days. At one point, I forgot I was this important new artist who just signed to OTF.  Regret was finally sitting with me about the incident. Looking in the mirror was hard to do, once again.
I called up Joi and Manelle for company and a little motivation to get back on my grind. They brought their assistants who dolled me up every time. By then, my face was clear enough to go bare but a bitch needed to feel like a star. They styled my braids, put me in some sneakers and beat my face to the gods. These women understood the assignment every time.
I walked around town like I was from there. No Wiz, no phone, no Durk, just me. The fresh air kissed my nostrils cause I hadn't been outside in a while. The cool breeze didn't bother me, the environment brought me peace. I could run, jump, or scream if I wanted to. The freedom of it all was exhilarating. But, it was short lived.
Somehow, I caught myself walking into the wrong neighborhood. I thought I was walking through a shortcut back to the hotel. I got lost and definitely looked like it. The expensive ass clothes and jewelry that didn't belong to me was a dead giveaway. I shouldn't had just been walking aimlessly. Not to mention, I'm in a place I know nothing about. Durk was supposed to show me around the city, so I partially blame him.
About 2 blocks in, I was deep in the ghetto. I'm talking bout random alleys, abandon houses, and the projects type of ghetto. Kids was playing outside without supervision, niggas was standing on the corner like they stuck in the 90s, and that designated sweet older lady who sat on the porch and watched everything came with every hood. Stray cats crossing streets and them big ass barking dogs who were always locked behind some fence brought me back to my childhood.
What I didn't miss was the porches, parks,  yards, sidewalks, cars, or anything with ample space that was riddled with a crowd of niggas. An innocent young girl often fell victim to their catcalling and sexual harassment. Me being grown now only made them feel entitled to touch me. No matter what time of day it is, cross the street when you see a crowd of niggas/men. Or, turn the fuck around and go back where you came from.
Unfortunately, I was detected before I could turn around without them noticing me.  Whats weird is, I hadn't even made it in eyes view of their porch yet and before I attempted to cross the street they were hopping off the steps.
"Yo, you Caly. Right?!" one of them shouted. I stop walking and squinted my eyes to see if I recognized anybody.
"Yeah, that's her." a familiar voice said. I slowly walked towards the crowd to come face to face with Slim. As terrified as I was, I was relieved to see somebody I know in a time of clear confusion.
"Why are you here?" I said. I was clenching my fists, preparing for him to give me a reason to protect myself. The sound of Durk assembling that gun kept replaying in my head. I knew I should've had it on me.
"Can we go somewhere and talk? please." He said. He ordered the other men to go back on the porch and I was left there standing across from him. Just a foot away. He tried to touch me, but each attempt was shot down by me stepping back another foot.
"We're good right here, don't touch me." I said.
"London, what is this? How could you do this to me?"
    "You serious?"
"Was I not enough for you, or is this a paper chase?"
"You're serious." I nodded and crossed my arms. "You know, it's taking so much outta me to not hurt you right now. I can't believe you think you can put yo hands on me and that I'm gonna stay with you for it to happen again."
"What are you talking about? I fucked up, yes. But we were fine after that. That don't mean go out and fuck another nigga. I should be the one who's upset."
"I didn't fuck nobody and you can lie about what happened all you want but I was the one with the black eye and busted lip. Not you."
"You really bout to run with this story, London? That I beat you?"
"Its not a story because it happened. But, why would I want to tell anybody that? I can't even look myself in the mirror. YOU did that to me."
"That nigga already telling people that shit and put a hit out on my life. YOU did that. If I hit you like you said I did, I would remember. I never beat on you. We been together for how long?"
"I guess you don't remember what Jason did either, huh? Or am I lying about that too? Has it ever occurred to you that I don't need to lie to get the things that I want. This could've been an opportunity for the both of us, but you had to violate me to get recognized. What does that say about you?"
"Karma gone catch up to you one day-"
"Where's Jason? He put you up to this?"
"What does Jason have to do with it?"
"Slim, stop playing. This is really not funny."
"Its starting to be cause I feel like I'm in the middle of a bad prank."
"So, you just gone act like that night never happened and that I left you for no reason?"
"If something happened, I'd remember. So, yeah."
"Rodney was there, ask him what happened. Until then, leave me the fuck alone." I turned around and he tried to lure me back. His disregard for the pain I was feeling didn't sit well with me. This is a man that I still had love for and spent every day with for the last few years of my life. His willingness to cause me physical harm and then blatantly lie as if it didn't happen scared me. I was heartbroken and in that moment the emotions for a lost love set in.
    "London, wait. Don't go."
"I said, don't fucking touch me." I tried to snatch away but his grip was overpowering.
"Just hear me out. I don't want us to just end like this."
"Nigga, I advise you to let her go." some random guy said. He and a couple others marched up from the direction I was aiming to walk. He lifted his shirt and flashed his gun, forcing Slim to let go of me instantly.
"Thank you for the help, but I can handle this on my own." I said.
"I'm bout sure you can, Caly. But, you shouldn't be on this side of town by yourself." he said. I frown with confusion and crossed my arms again.
"Do I know you?" I said.
"Walk this way for two blocks and make a left. Keep straight until you reach the grocery store."
"Umm, and then where do I go?"
"Just walk." he said sternly. I don't know if it was the bass in his voice that got me to move but before I knew it, I was on my way.

Walking in a new direction, I managed to get lost again. I was in a different hood, with different yet the same dynamics. My day out became a day in the life of Chicago real quick, but I didn't mind anymore. The sounds of a nearby Ice cream truck echoed through the streets while police sirens muffled the tune soon after.  Gunshots could be heard in the distance and I was appalled to know they really be live like that.
A wave of relief possessed my body to see a grocery store sign in the distance. The worry that crinkled up inside the pit of my stomach loosened and I somehow felt like I was in a familiar area. A black truck pulled up in front of me off a side street. Before I could go around it, the window rolled down.
"Hop in." Vinnie said, and he unlocked the doors. He rolled the window up, locked the doors, and sped off before I could get my seat belt on.
"If you trynna kill me, then say that." I said. He chuckled and kept his eyes on the road while he continued to speed.
"You trying to get yourself killed, ma. You gotta let people know when you out walking the streets like that." he said.
    "I'm grown, I don't need a babysitter."
"This Chicago, you need protection. You a walking lick right now, Durk ain't warn you?"
"No, Tay forgot to mention that. Apparently, he thought he could keep me on house arrest without any way to contact him. I just wanted some fresh air, that's all."
"I got people looking out for you, at his request. So, just let me know when you decide to wander off like this. If they don't do they job, they gotta answer to me, and then I gotta hear it from him. Either way, you being unaccounted for is bad for business. You might've just gotten Wiz fired."
"What he say to you to get you to look out for me like this?"
    "Does it matter?"
"Yes, I'd like to know if my business is now public knowledge."
"You didn't want him to handle the situation. And, that's where I come in."
    "So, he told you?"
"Listen, this stays between us. You never walked yo clueless ass to the deep end, and didn't run into Slim while doing it. If Wiz get on yo head, which he should if he likes his job, tell him you were with me all day."
"Tay does not care that much. " I laughed, but he didn't.
"This stays between us, period." He opened his glove compartment that had buku condoms in it, then handed me a lavender IPhone.
"Oh my god, my phone. How did you get this?"
    "What did I just say?"
"Okay, okay. my lips are sealed."
"You bought a new phone with the money Tay gave you."
"Thank you." I smiled. Getting my phone back felt like reclaiming my identity.
"Anytime you need something, hit my line. Bria, will give you my number."
"You not gone do me like Tay, are you? I haven't heard from him in three days."
"I wouldn't worry too much about my brother. He's not as reliable as you think. If and when you need something, call me. Even if that something is my brother."
    "Uhh, okay."
"I meant, I'll contact him for you if you need him."
    "Got it. Thank you, Vinnie.."
    "Like I said. Anytime, ma."

Vinnie drove me back to the hotel, and he insisted on walking me up to my suite. The thought of having to go back alone before the day was over made me blue. When I asked Vinnie if he had any free time on his hands, he offered to stay with me.
Walking through the door, I felt a presence. Something was off and I searched the room for it. The lights cut on by themselves and Bria jumped out screaming, SURPRISE! I was startled but excited to see her. She ran towards me and jumped, I then caught her by the thighs and spun her around.
"I missed you so much." she said as she squeezed tighter around my neck.
"I missed you too." I said. She examined my hair and make up, rubbing her thumbs across my jawline.
"You look really good.." she said as she bit her bottom lip.
"You too, as always." I said with a smile. She planted a kiss on my lips and started a chain reaction of ours dancing together. When she pulled away, she had a smile that stretched from ear to ear.
"I been waiting a long time to do that." She said. My cheeks warmed and I buried my face in her chest. "Awww, I made you blush."
I lifted my head and remember Vinnie was standing by the door. His open mouth and furrowed brows spoke more than his silence. I let Bria down and she ran to Vinnie. She pressed her fingers against his chin to force his mouth closed.
"How long this been going on?" He said. Bria giggled and shrugged her shoulders.
"I'm just so gay for her." She said.
"Yeah, I'll admit. For a strictly dickly girl she sure loves to press my gay lil buttons." I said.
"So, you're Bi?" He said with a head scratch.
"She don't like labels." Bria said.
"Wait, who are you?" He said. Bria and I burst into laughter. I shrugged and sat in a dining chair.
"I'm glad somebody finally asked." I said.
"Oh, you just entered an abyss." Bria said.
"I got all the time in the world for this." Vinnie said.
"Please don't tell me you're one of those fake ass poly niggas who be begging for a threesome." I said.
"Ooh, not pulling yo card already." Bria said.
"Aye, fake is not my forte. But all bullshit aside, I'm intrigued. I'll bite." he said with a smirked.
"Mm.. We just might be good friends." I said.
"See, what I did here?" Bria grinned, leaned on the table, then waved her fingers between Vinnie and I.

That day I learned what Vinnie was about. I also learned that it was something about them Banks brothers that I just can't put my finger on yet. But that's another story for another day.
The "This stays between us" motto seemed to apply to everything when it came to Vinnie and his relationships. I mean, I only talked to the man for a few hours and the King Vinnie that everyone knows ain't who I saw. That playful, obnoxious, and childish persona he plays for TV didn't even make the cut with me. He presented himself as a grown ass man who knows what he wants and what he likes.
The bonus part is that he wasn't ashamed about it. But, the question I really wanted to ask is why he's not like that around Durk. Of all people in this world, your older siblings should be your safe haven. I definitely took notes and intended on getting inside Vinnie's head. The way he pried me open to know about me, my sexuality and a little bit bout my background. I got the impression he'd be willing to share some things about himself.
I came to Chicago for a fresh start, going off a promise to have a better life. But, knowing that I can make real connections with real people beyond all this fake shit feels more wholesome and welcoming. Vinnie touched my soul when I was ready to sell it for a dream. Shit, he even brought my baby Bria to me. It felt good to know someone was in my corner when it didn't benefit them.

The next morning couldn't come fast enough for me. After days of itching to talk to Durk, I was finally scheduled to see him. There was a meeting being held at his PR team's office. I was prepared to come up with a plan to eliminate the target that I had on my back.
Joi & Manelle came early to hook me up once again. Wiz, never knocked on my door, though. Usually, he'd give me a heads up on our time restrictions. The glam team had been gone for at least 30mins before I received a knock at my door. Unexpectedly, it was Durk.
Although he had on a basic gray sweatsuit, his signature cologne, grillz, and recently retwisted & styled dreads took my breath away. Instead off greeting him like a normal person, I stared him down. He cleared his throat and stuffed his hands in his pockets.
"S-sorry, I wasn't expecting to see you until-"
"I know." He said. "Vinnie said you needed to talk to me, and that it was urgent?"
"Uh, yeah. Actually, I do. About the other night, I-"
"Yeah, how about we consider that entire night as the night that never happened?" He said sternly.
"Yes, that's cool. But, I had something I-"
"That wasn't a question and I'm not interested in talking about something that never happened."
"Oh.. okay." I muttered.
A pain spread through my chest, churning my insides. The words I wanted to say next faded before they could roll off my tongue. My embarrassment must have shown because my cheeks were getting just as warm as the crevices of my body. Durk's sudden need to avoid eye contact told me all I needed to know. I pushed past him and walked myself to the car. Any advances to small talk were politely ignored while I pretended to scroll on my phone.
Sitting in the back of the truck was awkwardly silent to begin with. But things tended to get more tense when we picked up Royale from her Aunt's house. Her whole demeanor changed once she looked over Durk's shoulder to see me sitting next to him. Apparently, neither one of us were aware that the other was invited. Despite the nature of the meeting that's being held.
I didn't expect a greeting from her, and I certainly didn't get one. Yet, everyone looked at me as if it was my job to greet her. She rolled her eyes at the sight of me and gave Durk a big juicy kiss. He wouldn't deny her anything, so he gave in. Her arm wrapped around his and their fingers entangled. She had claimed her territory and I didn't take any offense to it. In fact, mad respect to stunting on who she believes is the side chick.
While ear hustling and using my peripheral, I peeped how loving he was being with her. He'd kissed her, she'd giggle. They'd whisper and then laugh. Then, I caught a glare coming from her left hand that was conjoined to his right. The biggest diamond I'd ever seen in my life was staring me right in the eye. Just sitting pretty, and mocking me.
A light switch flipped inside of me and I scooted closer to the door. I leaned my shoulder against the window as I watched the city disappear behind us. My imagination kicked in, killing the thoughts that pertained to my current feelings. I was dealing with information that I couldn't process, but I also considered it a boundary. Was I now in THE position that I was aiming to avoid this whole time? Did I officially settle to being a side chick?

"Thank you all for being here this morning, I promise I'll make this quick. We just have to get ahead of this situation and take control of it before things get outta hand." Mandy, Durk's PR Agent said.
We all sat in her office, occupying the two small sofas that sat in front of her desk. While Durk and Royale shared one, I sat alone in the other. Wiz stood by the door and Shawn sat on the edge of her desk, right across from Mandy. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that was an intervention for me.a
"Durk your brand is being a voice of the streets, a pillar of your community. You-you bring inspiration to young boys who need a role model. And, you bring motivation to those who don't believe there's another route out of poverty. You have integrity, you have pride, you have dignity and respect. But, most of all, you love your woman. You're a one woman man and you shout her out every chance you get. That is a vital role in your brand because it appeals to the majority of your female audience. They love how you adore and cherish Royale. Y'all are relationship goals for many people. Hashtag, Duroyale. That's who Lil Durk the rapper is, and that is who he'll need to be if he wants to continue to accelerate in his music career." Mandy said.
That switch that flipped in me earlier allowed me to see what everyone else saw. I was a problem, an absolute problem that needed to be dealt with by any means necessary. Acting oblivious to the dangers of my actions may have been ignorant of me. I was a parasite that was fucking up the image of their happy home. I didn't belong in that room.
    "I agree." I said with a nod.
"But that brings me to the plan.." She looked at Shawn and then at Durk, before landing her eyes on me. "Durk and Royale display how strong their love is by continuing to be a united front. But, let's give the fans a little romantic drama. People love a good love triangle."
    "A what?" I said.
"I want you to imply that you and Durk have a sexual relationship-"
"All while he calls me a liar and eggs on the possibility that it may be true for cool points."
"Not exactly, I want you both to fake a romantic affair disguised as a close platonic relationship."
"In other words, I'm pretending to be a side chick lying about being the side chick?"
    "Yes."
"How exactly will that help the situation?"
"Well, with their recent engagement and probably a VH1 wedding special, people will eventually forget about you."
"So, I'm just another Karlie Redd? I'm sorry, how does that help me?
"That's the point, it's not about you. Never was." Royale said with a taunting laugh.
"Well, I talked to Shawn and we decided that we should go this direction. Mona Scott seems to love it for the show and I wanna have a plan that's consistent with all areas of publicity." Mandy said.
"Mm," I said in deep thought. "I get it, your job is to make Durk look good. I'm not part of the plan, I'm the problem..You need me to sign something, don't you?"
"Caly, you don't have to do this." Durk said. Mandy nodded and Shawn picked up his suitcase.
"Bet, gimme the papers." I said. Once I signed the papers I stormed out of the office. Breathing heavy and heating up, I march down the hall with Wiz beside me.
"London, wait." Durk said as he jogged to my side.
"Tay, I've done everything you asked me to without hesitation. I trusted you with secrets the entire Chicago will have known by the end of the week. I'm the most loyal bitch you'll ever meet. But, this? is DONE."
"London.." He said as he reached for my hand. I stepped back and checked him while sucking my teeth.
"You made your decision. You get your show, and I'll be getting my signature's worth." I said with a fake smile.
"This not how I wanted it to-"
"Its fine." I said, then shrugged. "Congrats on your engagement."

I rode in the truck alone with Wiz on the way home. Shawn knew all of us riding back together wasn't gonna be a good idea. Besides, he got the signature he's been wanting this whole time. I was tempted to stir the pot but it was no longer worth it, I had already signed that damn NDA. They forced my mouth shut just like Durk wished. I spent almost 72hrs waiting to for reassurance, only to be silenced. As if I'd say anything to begin with.
A part of me wasn't mature enough to tie loose ends or prevent cracks in the foundation. I tended to let minor inconveniences blossom into full blown problems. I should've said what I had to say when I had the chance. So, then I had to make an executive decision.
    "Hey, Wiz?"
    "Yeah?"
"Can you do me a favor, without judgment?"
    "That's my job."
    "Can this stay between us?"
    "Confidential or just private?"
"Let's just say, there's a reason Durk needed me to sign that NDA."
    "Say less."
    "Stop by CVS, please."
    "You got it."

BRIA

"Can I ask you something?" I said. My head laid on Vinnie's warm, yet sweaty chest. The prickly new growth of his chest-hair imprinted my cheek. But, his heartbeat was soothing. While one hand was planted on my ass, his other rubbed my thigh. It was only a matter of minutes we'd be sleep, but Vinnie only had seconds left. My window of opportunity was thin, so I took it.
"What's up?" he said in a mutter.
"When Durk proposed yesterday, Why were you looking like that?"
    "Like what?"
    "Like you knew something.."
    "Because I do."
"Does it have anything to do with Caly?"
    "Nah, not really."
"Then, what is it?" He sighed and hesitated to respond.
"I just don't think he made the right decision."
"But you helped him set it up, why the change of heart?" I sat up and looked him in the eyes because I wanted to know the truth.
"He's my brother. I support everything he do, even if I don't agree with it."
"Well, why don't you agree? He loves her, Right? And, she loves him."
    "That's not the issue."
    "Then, what is?"
    "It just didn't feel real."
    "She cried, Dayvin."
"Yeah, but just the other night, she was ready to leave him. And, his mind hasn't been exactly on marrying her until Monday when I told him I was making reservations."
"Okay, I guess that's weird." I laid my head back down on his chest and he rubbed my back. "But, they do love each other, right? Do you think he'd go through with the wedding?"
    "I don't know. I hope not."
    "Why not?"
"He's made this mistake before and I'm grateful that he didn't go through with it. But, this time feels like the last time. He loves Royale, but marrying her ain't gone keep her. It's gone cause more problems."
    "How so?"
"What you think is gonna happen if they get married, then shit hit the fan with Caly?"
"I think they agreed to deal with it together-"
"I known this nigga all my life, Bria. Something ain't right bout this. He not okay."
"Well, what was the problem when he proposed the last time?"
"A week before the wedding, we found out that he had another baby on the way with somebody else. The wedding was called off, obviously."
"Did he already know about her?"
"He was cheating on his fiance the whole time with her and thought she wasn't gone tell anybody."
    "Damn, what happened after that?"
"It's like they don't exist. He don't even include that baby when he mentions how many kids he got."
    "Ouch."
"Yeah. Now, tell me you're just as concerned about this as I am.."
"We can't know for sure the reason he-"
    "I guess we'll see."

After our "Afternoon sex nap", Vinnie thought it would be a good idea for us to have a homemade lunch. He had the perfect ingredients for subs, so we preheated the oven to toast our bread. I found it amusing that we were in the kitchen making sandwiches while still naked.
Vinnie enjoyed our vulnerability and took the opportunity to turn it into something more intimate. He cut up some fruit for us to enjoy while we prepared our lunch. He'd feed me a piece of cantaloupe and we'd share it with a kiss.
While assembling our subs, he wrapped his arms around me and added ingredients per my request. We split each other's in half and share our tastes with one another. Although, I didn't enjoy the onions, jalapenos, nor Mayo on his and he didn't like the banana peppers, tomatoes, or black olives on mine; it was a very romantic gesture on his part that made me warm inside.
To wash down our subs, we poured us a glass of Apple Juice. Which happens to be the best juice there is. Vinnie washed our plates and we cleaned up the mess we made during the assembling. Then, there was a knock at the door. Vinnie frowned and stood with the fridge door still open. With a second knock confirming a visitor, he shut the fridge and walked to the door. He check the peephole and I sat at the kitchen island, drinking my juice in a bar stool.
"Who is it?" I said. He opened the door before I could decide what I'd do.
"What's up?" he said. Not ashamed to be completely naked, he made no effort to hide that fact.
"Is this a bad time?" A woman said.
    "Nah, what's up?" He said.
"I just wanted to come over and chill. I was bored and kinda wanted to see you." she said.
"Cool, just give me a minute to get dressed and I'll be down inna min" He stepped aside and invited her in. It was Megan and she was not happy to see me. "Make yourself at home."
"Hi, I'm Bria." i said with a wave, and a smile just to be petty.
"You forreal?" She said as she mugged Vinnie.
"Yes, have a seat" he said. I turned back around and continued to drink my juice. Vinnie kissed my shoulder and then my cheek, catching me off guard. "I'll be right back."
"No the fuck you won't. Vinnie what the fuck is this? You got this bitch up in here like I'm invisible." she said.
"Need I remind you of who I am?" he said.
"A lame ass nigga, who be dealing with these thirsty ass hoes." She said.
"Hold on." I said as I hopped out the stool. "Bitch, who you calling thirsty?"
    "Baby, chill."He said to me.
"Bitch, I'm talking to you. So, how about you continue playing house and shut the fuck up?" she said.
"TUH!" I said while I rushed to his room to throw something on and slide on my sneakers. I then tied my hair up and walked back into the living room where she continued to yell at Vinnie. "Dayvin, move." I said before I threw the first punch. "I got yo thirsty, Bitch!"
I was only 5 fave jabs in when Vinnie pulled me back and gave her the advantage to pull my hair. She got lucky with a few hits to my head but I managed to kick her as hard as I could in her stomach. She fell back against the door and attempted to charge again but Vinnie pushed her back.
"Y'all cut this shit out, man!" he said as he stood between us. "Megan, you gotta go."
"That bitch put her fucking hands on me and you kicking me out?!" She said.
"Bye, bitch!"I said with a wave.
"Bria.."He said as he scolded me.
"Fine. But the next time I see this bitch, Its OVER." she said as she left and slammed the door behind her.
"I can't wait to see her again." I said with a laugh. My heavy breathing ass had an adrenaline rush, while VInnie looked disappointed.
"Why'd you have to hit her?" he said.
"Don't think imma just let any one talk to me however they want to." I said.
"But, she wouldn't have been able to put her hands on you." he said.
"How am I supposed to know that? I handled it the exact way she probably would have if she was in my shoes."
"But you not her, you could've handled that differently."
    "I'll remember-"
    BANG! BANG! CRACK! SHATTER!
Vinnie and I rushed to the window, peeking through the blinds. Megan was destroying his truck with a metal bat. She had already ruined his windshield, causing it to be caved in and put a hole in the center.
My heart filled with guilt, I didn't mean to cause that to happen. With every swing, She cursed. Vinnie closed the blinds and took a deep breath. He walked slowly to his room, without challenging Megan. I did what I knew how and walked outside.
"Bitch, you step one foot closer, Imma handle you with this muh fucka." she said.
"Sis, this is not how you win a nigga." I said with a laugh. "But, at least you ain't wrecking my shit."
"Yours next, Bitch." She looked for the closest car and started shattering the windows. I sat back and laughed while shaking my head.
"Who said anything about that being my car?" She charged at me with the bat full of anger.
    "Keep playing with me, hoe."
"I'm serious, that's not my car. And, unless you wanna go to jail for this shit, I suggest you pay for the damages on Vinnie's truck."
    "I'm not paying for shit-"
"They gone call the police regardless. It's up to you to decide whether I saw anything or not. I have no problem giving them your name right now."
    "You police ass, Bitch-"
"I'm gonna go inside and wait for them to call the police. You cashapping me the money, or you finna be on the run?" She looked back at the neighbors car and then the truck. "Six windows, 5% tints, interior cleaning, some body work, and the headlights.."
"Fine, you better keep yo fucking mouth shut." she said as she pulled out her phone.
"That'll be, dolla sign BriBriOH." I said with a grin. A few seconds later, I got a Cash App Notification. She sent me $10,000 exactly. "Perfect, would you like to go apologize to Vinnie?"
"Fuck you." she said as she left in her car. Once she was gone, the front door opened and Vinnie stepped out on the porch fully clothed.
"I could've gotten it fixed. This ain't hurting my pockets." he said.
"I know, but it hurt mine and this was my fault. So, I had to find a way to pay you back.." He frowned and scratched his head.
    "Who taught you that?"
    "What do you mean?"
    "You know what I mean.."
"My m.. My mom. She was a sex worker.."
    "Was?"
"She used that money to pay for college and get the degree to work where she does now. But, she was a sex worker during my childhood."
"Is that why you don't wanna ask her about the abuse?"
"Yeah.." I nodded. "I'm scared I'll ruin the remaining memories of my parents that are good. I don't want to know how bad it really was."
"I think you should have that conversation one day.. really."
"I know.. but in the meantime... What's your Cash App?"
