Chapter 58
Sunday 4 days for the Full Moon Festival
Wei Ying felt nervous today.
He wasn't even sure why...well, he knew the reason because today he was going to give Lan Zhan his engagement gift...but he couldn’t understand why he felt so jittery and anxious, especially since they were already engaged.
Still, after many morning kisses which made him feel marginally better, he and Lan Zhan showered and went to have breakfast.
Lan Zhan also appeared to be excited and only smiled enigmatically when Wei Ying asked him why. They finished their meal, alone because they were later than everyone else and then they went into the kitchen.
Mo XuanYu was standing with his sleeves rolled up, flour dusting on his cheeks and a sparkle in his green eyes when they walked in.
XiChen, normally so calm and collected when baking, looked stressed out.
"What's up, XiChen-Ge?" Wei Ying asked him, coming around to stand next to him. Of course, since Lan Zhan was still attached to him via their joined hands, he came too.
"Taste this!" XiChen pushed a still warm cake into his hand. "What do you think? I think something is missing but I can't put my finger on it."
Wei Ying broke it in half and pressed one part to Lan Zhan’s lips, shivering as he stared back. That golden gaze was so intense that for a second, Wei Ying thought there was only the two of them in the kitchen. He watched as those beautiful pink lips parted and allowed the sweet dessert to enter his mouth. The whole act was sinfully sensuous and Wei Ying was shocked because it seemed like Lan Zhan wasn't doing anything extra yet Wei Ying felt tingles all the way down to his toes.
Lan Zhan gently guided his hands up to Wei Ying’s mouth, his eyes darkening as it opened for him, slipping the tasty treat inside.
Sweetness exploded on his tongue and Wei Ying moaned in delight.
"XiChen-Ge! What are you talking about? These are fabulous!!" He cried, reaching for another one and sharing that with a now eager looking Lan Zhan too. "Aren't they, Lan Zhan?"
"Mn."
"No...you don't get it...your sister is going to bring hers and...I want to make sure mine are just as good!" XiChen brought out the ingredients again and began to make another batch.
Wei Ying glanced at Mo XuanYu's face, which wore a resigned but amused expression as he too got ready to help.
"Can we help with anything?" Wei Ying asked excitedly.
"Not really...I have A-Yu. He's been great so far." XiChen accidentally tousled his hair, covering it with flour. "Oh sorry, A-Yu!"
"It's fine, BoFu. I'll just go shower after." Mo XuanYu beamed at him enthusiastically.
Wei Ying could see how happy the teenager was already at being given something to do, a task he was able to share with his uncle.
"Well then, is it okay if we go to the house? We just want to make sure everything is ready, tidy up, that sort of thing..." The nerves were back in full force.
Wei Ying rocked back on his heels as Lan Zhan squeezed his hand, wanting to make sure he was alright. Wei Ying smiled at him tentatively, hoping to reassure him that everything was fine.
But Lan Zhan was no fool.
"What's wrong?" He asked immediately.
"Nothing..." Wei Ying protested.
Lan Zhan raised a brow in disbelief.
"I...um...okay, I want to show you something." Wei Ying admitted.
"You both can go." Lan XiChen told them, scrolling through his phone for some amazing new recipe to jump out at him.
Lan Zhan didn't need to be told twice; he pulled on Wei Ying’s hand and led him out of there as fast as he could.
JingYi was already in the car, bopping along to whatever he was listening to and Lan Zhan grimaced as he opened the door and a country song blasted out.
Say, hey, good lookin', what you got cookin'?
How's about cookin' something up with me?
Hey, sweet baby, don't you think maybe
We could find us a brand new recipe?
I got a hot rod Ford and a two dollar bill
And I know a spot right over the hill
There's soda pop and the dancin's free
So if you wanna have fun, come along with me
Say, hey, good lookin', what you got cookin'?
How's about cookin' something up with me?
I'm free and ready, so we can go steady
How's about savin' all your time for me?
No more lookin', I know I've been took in
How's about keepin' steady company?
I'm gonna throw my datebook over the fence
And find me one for five or ten cents
I'll keep it 'til it's covered with age
'Cause I'm writin' your name down on every page
Say, hey, good lookin', what you got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?
Wei Ying knew the words...because of course he did.
Lan Zhan sighed.
He'd ordered those earplugs on express delivery but no one delivered on Sundays.
And Wei Ying had kept him so busy these days that Lan Zhan had forgotten to put extra ones in all of his pockets.
"Do you know what this song reminds me of?" Wei Ying whispered in his ear, his breath hot and enticing.
Lan Zhan turned to look into deep silver pools, filled with desire.
He shivered at the raw need in Wei Ying's eyes, his own body humming with a reflecting want.
"Mn?"
"That night we cooked together. And..."
"And?"
Wei Ying licked his lips, watching how Lan Zhan’s eyes followed his action.
"And afterwards..." Wei Ying waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
Before Lan Zhan could grab him, the car rumbled to a stop.
JingYi switched off the engine and in the sudden silence, the mood was broken.
"We're here." He announced unhelpfully.
Lan Zhan glared at him while assisting Wei Ying out of the car.
They held hands on the path all the way up to the front door.
Lan Zhan opened the door for them but once they got inside, he crowded Wei Ying against the wall. His hard body rested against Wei Ying’s, so that Wei Ying had to lean back and look up into golden eyes coloured with concern.
Wei Ying’s hands rose up to grip Lan Zhan’s hips, needing a connection.
"I am worried about Wei Ying." Lan Zhan said, his deep voice stirring something inside Wei Ying.
Wei Ying swallowed with difficulty, his mouth completely dry at the raw hunger he saw lurking in that golden gaze, hiding behind his anxious expression. And he decided to come clean.
"I'm scared." He admitted.
"Of what?" Lan Zhan brought him within the circle of his arms then.
He hadn’t been expecting that, of all things.
Wei Ying sighed, snuggling closer and not discreetly sniffing nosefuls of sandalwood, the fragrance automatically calming him. He could hear Lan Zhan’s heart beating underneath his ear and felt soothed.
"Of you...what your reaction is going to be..." Wei Ying said, truthfully.
"My reaction? To what?" Lan Zhan was most interested now as his one hand stroked down Wei Ying’s soft hair gently, wanting him to be honest and not feel that way.
"Promise me you won't laugh?" His voice sounded so small.
"I would never laugh at Wei Ying." Lan Zhan kissed the top of his head fondly.
"I had a dream...I saw something and for some reason, it reminded me of you...and A-Yuan and A-Yu too." Wei Ying mustered all the strength he could from Lan Zhan and pulled away, needing to get this over and done with.
"Wei Ying?"
"Please...come with me?" Wei Ying led him to the door of the living room and paused outside it.
All of a sudden, Lan Zhan was excited because finally he was going to be allowed inside...where he had been dying to know what Wei Ying had been preparing all this time.
"You can only go in if you promise me one thing." Wei Ying was saying.
"Anything." Lan Zhan replied in a heartbeat.
"If you don’t like it, you have to say. It's an easy fix...I can get rid of it like that." Wei Ying snapped his fingers, "but I really want you to be honest with me...okay?"
Lan Zhan let his fingers raise Wei Ying’s chin so he could slant his lips easily over his warm ones, eagerly tasting that sweet honeyed flavour of their kisses. He felt Wei Ying clinging onto the front of his shirt, the fabric crushed tightly within his fists.
It was nowhere near enough or even how much he wanted to continue this on a flatter surface...but his first worry was wanting Wei Ying to feel better now. Everything else could come later.
So he nipped on Wei Ying’s bottom lip, letting his tongue sooth it once as Wei Ying moaned into his mouth. Wei Ying was the sweetest addiction.
"I will be honest." He promised.
Wei Ying opened his gorgeous silver eyes, still dazed from that intense kiss. He smiled softly.
"So...this is my gift to you, my handsome boyfriend...on the happy news that we are to be married soon."
Wei Ying pushed open the door and pulled an eager Lan Zhan into the room.
Lan Zhan’s eyes were drawn immediately to the wall where an unfamiliar sight greeted him. He pulled Wei Ying along with him, stopping only when they were right in front of the newly painted wall.
Wei Ying could only stare at Lan Zhan as his beautiful golden eyes took in every detail of the mural he had painted.
Lan Zhan felt his fingertips graze the surface of the wall, but somewhere in the back of his mind he felt as if he had seen this scene at some point in his life...maybe not even this one.
Water cascaded over a high clifftop, the droplets appearing real with the way Wei Ying had used the different hues of white paint, the scene astonishing in its details. Lan Zhan felt as if were he to take one step forward, he would be transported to that same time and place, feel the mist on his face from the spray that looked so real here on the wall.
Wei Ying had achieved the best result, from the sharp blades of green grass on the soft meadowy part of the hill, the gray boulders appearing as solid as real ones, littering the ground.
And the sky...was simply marvellous. Such a vivid blue, like the type so often seen in the summertime.
The trees bursting forth with cute little buds and tiny leaves...Wei Ying had captured this place like a snapshot and as Lan Zhan's eyes drifted towards the bottom right hand corner, he saw four figures, three of whom were dressed in the white robes of days gone by, with a single black and red robed man whose red ribbon fluttered in the breeze, tangling with the white ribbon tied around the head of the man next to him.
The other two figures were definitely younger and shorter than these two.
Lan Zhan turned to him then, his face full of wonder.
"How? Where is this place?" He demanded. "I feel as if...as if I have been there before."
"Isn't that right? I too, I felt like this place was real and I wasn't making stuff up inside my head. I had a dream...and I kept seeing the same image again and again. I ...I wanted you to see it as well and that's why I thought I could show you like this." Wei Ying said.
"I love this...it feels so real..." Lan Zhan replied.
"Really?" Wei Ying threw himself into his arms.
"Really. We can sit here and enjoy this view too." Lan Zhan kissed his forehead warmly.
"Congratulations, fiance." Wei Ying said, feeling quite emotional.
"Congratulations, husband-to-be..." Lan Zhan swayed with Wei Ying in his arms, feeling ever so content now. But he had one more surprise for Wei Ying now. "I have something for Wei Ying too." He whispered.
"What?" Wei Ying leaned back so he could look properly at Lan Zhan.
Lan Zhan pulled out a white box, similar to the ones that had held their wedding rings.
Wei Ying looked confused, thinking this was the same box.
But Lan Zhan opened it to reveal two slim platinum rings with a single cherry blossom in the centre, with a pink diamond embedded at its core.
"My love...we already have wedding bands...right?" Wei Ying asked him.
"Mn. But Wei Ying said he wants to wear them on the day we get married." Lan Zhan clarified. "And I need to show the world that Wei Ying is taken. So I had matching engagement rings made that can be worn with the wedding rings together or separately." Tenderly, Lan Zhan brought Wei Ying’s fingers to his lips, kissing the place where this ring was going to rest. He paused, looking into silver starlight eyes. "Does Wei Ying like it?"
Wei Ying nodded, tears falling from his eyes like diamonds as he watched Lan Zhan place the delicate ring on the third finger of his left hand, kissing the ring too when he finished.
Wei Ying took the box out of Lan Zhan’s long pale fingers and did the same for him, kissing his ring too.
"Now everyone will know that Lan Zhan is mine...forever." He said, smiling brightly.
"Yours. As Wei Ying is mine." Lan Zhan promised.
Wei Ying jumped up into his arms and kissed him sweetly, knowing that Lan Zhan was more than capable of carrying his weight.
And then there was a knock on the door.
Lan Zhan reluctantly put him down and went to open the door.
It was Jiang YanLi and her family.
"Shijie!" Wei Ying ran into her arms, hugging her tightly.
"We came early because we thought you might need some help setting things up. And!" She grabbed his left hand. "Is this the ring? Congratulations, A-Xian!" She hugged him once more before going to greet Lan Zhan, hugging him too.
"We just got here, too." Wei Ying told her excitedly.
He took her into the kitchen and began telling her everything in detail, while Lan Zhan was left staring at an uncomfortable looking Peacock and Jin RuLan.
***********
The other guests began arriving not longer after.
Nie MingJue was next with his brother, looking all around for XiChen. Wen Qing and Wen Ning arrived together and Wen Qing's sharp eyes caught the sparkle off Wei Ying’s new jewelry immediately. She lifted his hand to check it out thoroughly.
And then she actually smiled at them...
XiChen arrived next with Uncle Qiren and the boys, and Wei Ying showed off their rings with increasing pleasure and each person cheered them.
The party went on late as somebody connected their phone to a speaker and people began to dance after pushing furniture out of the way.
Wei Ying grabbed an unsure Lan Zhan, and they began to sway together.
This was it for Lan Zhan, he thought.
All his loved ones were right here, and best of all, Wei Ying was right here in his arms.
