Chapter 4
41 Days to go for the Full Moon Festival
XiChen marched up to Wei WuXian and offered his hand for his phone.
"Show me."
Lan WangJi didn't understand anything Wei WuXian had said.
From the moment that dark-haired beauty had walked into his home, Lan WangJi had zeroed in on his bare shoulder where his over-sized t-shirt had slipped off, revealing a smooth expanse of skin. His legs were bare, because he was wearing shorts that revealed his tanned long legs and his bare feet, something which was making Lan WangJi frown.
"Shoes?" He said.
"Huh?"
Both Wei WuXian and XiChen turned around to look at him.
"Shoes?" He repeated, as if it made sense, that single word.
He looked pointedly down at the only person not wearing shoes.
Wei WuXian waved away his concern.
"Oh, that's fine. Didn't you ever run around in bare feet when you were a kid? It's totes okay. But what are we going to do about this?"
"What exactly happened after you all left the Estate last night?" XiChen's voice was firm but kind.
Lan WangJi thought back to the previous evening.
"I cannot remember." He said, slowly.
Again, the other two looked at him.
"Well, haha...lucky for you, enough people caught it on their phones!" Wei WuXian said, nervously laughing.
It was terribly awkward.
"Let me see?" Lan WangJi said, and joined them.
All three of them crowded around Wei WuXian’s phone, and he opened an app that Lan WangJi did not recognise with a blue bird on it. He pressed the play button, and he saw all three of them, Wei WuXian, Wen Qing and himself sitting at a table.
The place was crowded and noisy, and a fourth man, one clearly inebriated, stood in front of the three. Lan WangJi saw that he himself had passed out, maybe that was the reason why he couldn't remember anything? But he carried on watching, frowning harder when the stranger poked Wei WuXian despite the latter asking him to leave.
When the action became stronger, Lan WangJi saw himself stand up and remove that offending digit from Wei WuXian’s person, saw the stranger cry out and then try to punch him. And then he tried and failed not to be pleased when he saw himself punching that rude man.
"Who is that?" He asked.
Yet again, the other two stared at him as if he had grown another head.
"That is the Jiang conglomerate heir. We've had many unpleasant dealings with the Jiangs." XiChen filled him in.
Lan WangJi did not like the Jiangs. His dealings with them was limited to meetings in their boardroom when they were forced to work together via a third party, but every meeting left him with a headache.
Mostly they would send Madam Yu to negotiate and she was ruthless, nitpicking at every small detail, as if everything depended on those minute clauses.
Lan WangJi hated her the most, though he might not ever say that out loud.
"No wonder it's gone viral. He's pretty famous, but it didn't take them long to figure out who you were." XiChen was saying this to his brother but it was Wei WuXian who apologised.
"I'm really sorry to drag you guys into my mess." He looked so down about it.
"What mess?" Lan WangJi asked.
"We have a bit of history...I'm the reason he came to cause trouble last night. Lan Zhan...I'm so sorry. How is your hand today?" Wei WuXian grabbed it to examine the damage.
The little cut was already healing.
But Lan WangJi could only focus on the fact that Wei WuXian was touching him, and so carefully too. It was very...endearing.
Short little tingles of joy radiated from their point of contact, and Lan WangJi was at a loss to describe it, but he never wanted it to end.
XiChen cleared his throat.
"Have either of you had breakfast yet?" He asked, even though it way past that time.
"No." Lan WangJi could feel his ears getting hotter at the thought of where he had woken up that morning.
Wei WuXian didn't have to answer because his stomach did it for him.
"Then let's have a damage control meeting. We can talk after lunch, and Uncle Qiren will be there. He should be informed. However Didi," XiChen smiled at him. "I don't think we have anything to worry about because he crossed the line first. It was definitely self defence."
"Yeah...but none of that would've happened if I didn't suggest we go out drinking." Wei WuXian looked miserable.
"It is not Wei Ying’s fault." Lan WangJi said, sternly.
"My brother is right." XiChen reinforced. "That encounter could have happened anywhere, and I'm just glad that my Didi was there. Jiang WanYin looked like a mean drunk...that's all. Now, let's go home." XiChen led the way.
"Can I just change into something more presentable?" Wei WuXian beamed at them before darting into his caravan to do what he said, much to Lan WangJi's disappointment.
He came out minutes later, texting furiously, wearing a pair of black skinny jeans and a red shirt thrown on casually over a white vest.
"That's a nice buckle." XiChen remarked.
"Oh this? A-Yuan picked it out for me." Wei WuXian giggled.
Still his favourite sound, Lan WangJi decided.
"And where is the little one?" XiChen inquired, eagerly.
Lan WangJi wanted to snicker, because it seemed he nor Uncle Qiren were the only ones to succumb to the little boy's charms.
"Oh, Wen Ning took him last night. We all take turns to look after him, though I'm his official dad. They're his cousins, you see." Wei WuXian explained.
XiChen drove his SUV while Wei WuXian climbed into the back of Lan WangJi's car, with JingYi avoiding both their gazes.
Once they started driving, Wei WuXian spoke.
"Look...um...Lan Zhan...about last night..."
"I do not remember any of it." Lan WangJi replied, interrupting him.
His ears were on fire and he was far too aware of Lan JingYi, who coughed loudly in the front of the car.
"Well...I just want you to know...I only helped you to my bed because I couldn't find your keys...and then I thought, does Lan Zhan even have any of his clothes there? So I might have helped you change, but I swear, I didn’t look anywhere..."
He would have continued but Lan WangJi was about ready to die from embarrassment, and he quickly put his hand over Wei Ying’s mouth.
Wei WuXian had never experienced anyone wanting to shut him up so badly that they physically did it. And he couldn’t resist letting his tongue come out to play. Just a single sizzling touch and Lan WangJi snatched back his hand as if it was on fire. He frowned at the naughty gremlin sitting next to him, grinning.
"Anyway...I never got a chance to thank you...for last night." Wei WuXian carried on. "Things might have turned out so differently if you hadn't been there....and well...thanks." He finished, sheepishly.
Lan WangJi thought about how he felt about that statement.
"There is no need." He said, minutes later.
"Huh?" Wei WuXian’s quick mind had already moved on, thinking about something else entirely.
"To say thank you. It is not necessary. I would always defend Wei Ying." He said, absolutely sure of the fact.
Now it was Wei WuXian’s turn to blush.
JingYi put in earbuds and started singing out loud.
They pulled up outside the Lan Mansion.
XiChen had already parked and was waiting for them.
"You know, we forgot to show A-Yuan your bunnies last night. I think he forgot, so you're okay for now." Wei WuXian said, following Lan WangJi out of his car.
"Mn. Will make sure to show him next time." Lan WangJi took Wei WuXian’s elbow and guided him in. He frowned at his Xiongzhang, who gave him a knowing smile.
They made their way to the dining room, where Uncle Qiren was already waiting. He looked around them, pausing even after they had entered. He looked at XiChen.
"Where is the little one?" He asked, frowning now he had realised that A-Yuan wasn't joining them.
"He's at Daycare. I'll be going to pick him up around four pm." Wei WuXian answered.
"Why don't you bring him here instead?" Uncle Qiren asked, though it sounded like more of a demand.
"What? Here? Why?" Wei WuXian asked, scratching his chin.
"I am assuming Daycare costs money. I will do it for free." Uncle Qiren replied, fixing Wei WuXian with an intense stare, stroking his moustache.
"You would?" Wei WuXian hated that his voice came out so high pitched. "But what about his lessons? They teach him stuff..."
"I can also teach. If you want me to."
Again, Wei WuXian got the impression that Uncle Qiren wasn't asking.
"Uncle is trustworthy." Lan WangJi told him, quietly. "He home schooled both Xiongzhang and I."
"Really?" Wei WuXian squeaked...thinking all of this was far too soon.
"And we have bunnies." XiChen put the final nail in the coffin.
"Um...I'll talk to Wen Qing and Wen Ning...see what they say? Can I get back to you about that?" Wei WuXian asked, feeling a little overwhelmed. "You know...I can’t thank you guys enough...First you give me a job, and then you offer to look after my kid...it's too much." He blinked back grateful tears.
"Nonsense!" Uncle Qiren harrumphed. "I am a lonely old man. A-Yuan made me feel young again, that is all. I keep pushing my nephews to marry, maybe give me some grand babies to play with...but so far they remain ignorant about my time limits. I would hope you could be more understanding..." He looked pointedly at both of his nephews before his gaze settled on Wei WuXian. "I won’t be around for much longer, and-"
"The food will get cold, Uncle!" XiChen said quickly, discreetly rolling his eyes at Wei WuXian.
"Uncle can go on forever..." Lan WangJi mumbled under his breath. "Guilt trips are his speciality."
The wait staff felt the same way apparently, because as soon as XiChen said that, they began bringing out the food, and Wei WuXian was saved from answering.
They ate in silence except for when bottles of chilli sauce magically appeared in front of Wei WuXian’s plate, and he murmured a quick thank you to Lan WangJi.
After lunch, they traipsed behind Uncle Qiren to the living room.
XiChen filled him in on what had happened last night, showing him one of many videos out online.
"I see." He stroked his moustache. "Why does the Jiang heir hate you so much?"
"Um...well, a long time ago, Uncle Fengmian found out about my parents dying. He came looking for me and by that time, I was just about to go into Foster care. He had been looking for me...for a long time apparently, and that's how the rumours started." Wei WuXian held onto the corner of his red shirt, looking down at the seams.
Lan WangJi understood this was very hard for him, but at the same time, his protective feelings were alerted and he wanted to know too, what the problem was between the Jiangs and Wei WuXian. He had to know, because as far as he was concerned, that Jiang WanYin was never going to get so close to Wei WuXian again. Even on the videos, his hatred was as clear as day, and Lan WangJi was pretty sure he would try something again.
"Jiang Fengmian was looking for you? He knew your parents?" Uncle Qiren’s tone was suddenly sharper. "By any chance, were your parents Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren?"
Three pairs of eyes shot up to look at Uncle Qiren.
"H-how do you know that?" Wei WuXian asked, his fingers trembling.
Lan WangJi couldn't take it any more and reached across to hold his hand.
"I knew your parents, both of them. I was sorry to hear about their passing. But please, continue. What happened after Jiang Fengmian took you home?" Uncle Qiren had noticeably softened.
"At first, nothing much. But Uncle Fengmian was...well, whenever I did anything worthy of comment, like, my teachers would make a point of contacting him to tell him what I had achieved...and then he would go on and on about it for days. Jiang Cheng thought I was taking away the attention from his father, which was rightfully his. And then the rumours came back with full force." Wei WuXian looked at their joined fingers and wondered how such a small connection could mean so much.
"What rumours?" XiChen asked him, looking worried.
"Um...so Uncle Fengmian was kind of fixated by my success, academically. And I started spending as much time away from home as I could, because Madam Yu, well, she already didn't like me, but the rumours, people in her circle of friends added spice to something that absolutely couldn't be true, but she believed it. They wasted no opportunities to insinuate that my father was Uncle Fengmian, not Wei Changze. They even went as far as to say that was the reason why my parents left working for the Jiangs in the first place." Wei WuXian thought back to that lonely time.
He had become scared of befriending anyone, lest Jiang WanYin frightened them off. And he had decided long, long ago, that he was going to face the world with his brightest smile, never let anyone know how much he was hurting inside.
"And then?"
Wei WuXian looked up into the kindest golden eyes, ones that were genuinely worried about him. He smiled back, feeling a little bit better.
"Madam Yu started telling me off every day. She began getting Jiang Cheng onto her side...Shijie...she never believed those lies, but then they didn't believe her. Madam Yu kind of...really hated me by then. She and Uncle Fengmian used to argue all the time, I'm not kidding, she would throw things at him every time they fought. And Jiang Cheng would tell me it was my fault. So as soon as I graduated, I ran away from there. But since I never got a college or university degree, I couldn't find work." Wei WuXian wiped away the tears that threatened to fall onto his red shirt.
"What did you do?" Lan WangJi squeezed his hand, feeling terrible for this poor lost boy, who through no fault of his own, had to learn how to fend for himself.
At eighteen, Lan WangJi was getting ready to attend the most prestigious university in Gusu. All expenses paid, he would get to live in his own apartment. The difference in both of their lives at the same time was like night and day.
He was actually terrified of what Wei WuXian was going to tell them.
"So, it turns out you need an address to get work, and it became a vicious cycle because I hadn't thought it through. No address, meant no work, and before too long, I was queuing up at the soup kitchen, taking handouts. One night, Uncle Four was cleaning up, when a homeless guy came into the hall kicking and screaming. He attacked Uncle Four, but I...I stopped him from hurting Uncle Four. When the cops came to take us away, he told them I was his son, or as good as. Since I was over eighteen and legally an adult, there was nothing they could do. He took me home and introduced me to his family, to A-Qing, A-Ning, and A-Yuan. They gave me a home, taught me new skills and gave me back the strength to stand on my own two feet once more." Wei Ying shuddered out a breath.
He hadn’t told anyone of everything that had happened to him.
"Uncle Four taught me everything there is to know about construction work. Anything he didn't know, he got friends of his to teach me. When he passed away, he gave me his business, telling me to rename it for A-Yuan. Somehow Madam Yu found out about it. She and Jiang Cheng turned up at Uncle Four's funeral and threatened to ruin me. She swore I would never be able to work again, not if she had anything to do with it. At the time, Uncle Four had unfinished contracts, so I still got paid. But when they finished, no one renewed and I kept losing jobs. I had my savings, and by that time Wen Qing was already a doctor, but she and Wen Ning had debts of their own. College was costing more than anyone had anticipated. We helped each other out, but then Granny Wen died too, and there was no one to look after A-Yuan. We were lucky that the Foster services were overrun and they didn't look too closely at my financial situation." Wei WuXian looked up to find three sympathetic faces looking at him, listening intently.
"So what did you do?" XiChen asked him, gently. He leaned forward in his seat, eagerly listening.
"I kept trying. Either A-Qing or A-Ning would take turns looking after A-Yuan and I pretty much got rejection after rejection. Sometimes I'd get the job, only to find the hiring personnel had changed their mind, or they couldn't match my price...something equally ludicrous every time. It was only when Lan Zhan here hired me, that I got my first job, all by myself." Grateful tears left his eyes then.
A white handkerchief appeared in his lap, and he took it to wipe his face clean.
"But sir, I want you to know, I'm good at my job. You want it done in forty days, I'll make sure it's done in that time frame! You won't regret hiring me." Wei WuXian couldn't stop the passionate outburst from leaving his lips.
"Do you have any extra manpower?" Uncle Qiren asked him, sternly.
"No, but I'm strong!" Wei WuXian flexed his arm and showed off his muscles. He always had a lean frame, sinewy but tough and strong. His daily work when he could get any made him agile, fit and healthy.
"Do you really think you can pull off that job in forty days?" Uncle Qiren persisted.
"Yes! I can, absolutely!" Wei WuXian was nodding too, trying to reassure the old man.
Lan WangJi was frowning at his brother, who smothered a smile. His baby brother wanted him to intervene and stop their Uncle from what Lan WangJi deemed as bullying, and XiChen had never seen him behaving this way. He thought it was quite funny.
"No, you misunderstand." Uncle Qiren cleared his throat, slightly embarrassed that he had failed to get his point across and ended up making the young man panic even more.
"What do you mean?" Wei WuXian surreptitiously looked on both side of himself to see if either brother's face held a clue, but he was baffled.
"When I realised who your parents were...well, suffice to say, it would be remiss of me not to offer some assistance. I am sorry they passed away. In view of that and everything you just told us, I would like to help you. You seem like an honest young man, and there is of course, the added bonus of getting back at certain people. Not the main reason for offering assistance." Uncle Qiren clarified.
"Of course not. Uncle merely wants to help." XiChen smirked, because he knew their Uncle hated Madam Yu but really was too polite to say so.
Lan WangJi finally relaxed. He could have taken his hand away at any time, but he rather liked holding Wei WuXian’s hand in his. His hand was warm, a little smaller than his own, and yet it looked perfect nestled with his bigger palm.
"So now, what are we going to do about the videos?" XiChen continued, now looking to his uncle.
"Well...do we have to do anything? It is clearly self defence, and my nephew knows how to defend himself...if anything, it is good publicity, isn't it?" Uncle Qiren stroked his moustache again. "I see nothing wrong with it, as it stands."
"I guess you're right." XiChen shifted in his seat. "It shows anyone not to mess with my Didi." He smiled proudly at his baby brother. "But do you think they'll take this lying down? Madam Yu does not like her son being shown in the media as anything less than perfect...and this video-"
"Is the perfect example of how not to be." Uncle Qiren finished. "No...you should leave it up. If she comes for us, we'll be ready and waiting."
"Fine then, I guess there's nothing more to discuss." XiChen stood up. "I'm going to give MingJue a heads up and then drive down to see him. I'll see you all in the evening? And Mr. Wei, it would great if you bring your son to join us for dinner."
"Yes. That is a good idea." Uncle Qiren said.
"Mn. I like that." Lan WangJi added.
Wei WuXian looked around the room at the obvious welcome, and he smiled. "I'll ask A-Yuan, see what he says."
"Bunnies." Lan WangJi told him, enthusiastically.
Wei WuXian giggled.
"You already know him so well. Fine, fine, we'll come over for dinner." He smiled brightly. "Thank you all so much."
"It is possible to be overly fond of that word." Uncle Qiren said. "Just know that we wouldn't be interfering in your life if we did not want to. We expect you to be fully professional though."
"I will be." Wei WuXian looked at his watch. "Um...and I'd love to stay, but it's time for me to collect A-Yuan from Daycare."
Uncle Qiren visibly brightened.
And then Lan WangJi had a wonderful idea.
"Take JingYi. Bring him back here."
"Oh no, I couldn't...what about you?" Wei WuXian said, shaking his head.
"I shall pack a few clothes and necessities to take back there. When you return, Uncle can look after A-Yuan while we start working." Lan WangJi also stood up, very pleased with his idea.
Plus if for any reason, he needed a change of clothes, he was going to be ready from now on.
"That's a good idea. And if you guys sort out a schedule, you'll be more efficient. See you later, everyone." XiChen smiled approvingly and left.
"Come on." Lan WangJi tugged on their joined hands. "Uncle." He tilted his head as they left.
Wei WuXian was completely concentrating on their joined hands, in awe at how commanding and forceful Lan WangJi could be. In fact, all of the Lans had gotten together and welcomed him into their family, and he felt a little overwhelmed.
Lan WangJi's hand was snug in his and Wei WuXian felt...safe.
How long ago had he felt like this?
Maybe with his parents, and maybe in the beginning with the Jiangs...and look how that turned out...but this felt different. Maybe three was really a charm, and this would work out? His dream was to buy A-Yuan a little paddling pool for when the summer months got too hot. He remembered swimming in the many pools owned by the Jiangs when he was little...before Madam Yu said she didn't want to contaminate herself by swimming in the same waters as him.
But that familiar feeling of being free in the water, of diving and swimming without a care in the world...it had never gone away.
"What is Wei Ying thinking about?" Lan WangJi asked him, as they came to a stop.
Wei WuXian blinked, and realised that Lan WangJi had brought them to the white sports car.
"Oh, I just...I want to buy a paddling pool for A-Yuan...I was thinking, as soon as I have enough money, that's the first thing I'm going to buy." He beamed up at Lan WangJi.
Lan WangJi had never seen something so beautiful before.
His eyes were brilliant shining jewels, as bright as twin diamonds. And the more Lan WangJi looked at him, the faintest blush appeared across his rosy cheeks, embarrassed at the attention he was receiving. Wei WuXian bit his lip, and as Lan WangJi saw his white teeth pressing down on the plump pink lip, he was overcome with an urge to bite there too.
"I'll see you soon." He said instead, and all but shoved Wei WuXian into the back of the car. To JingYi, he said, "drive carefully. Wei WuXian will give you the address. Then bring them both back here. Do you understand?"
And then he strode away, not wanting to watch them drive away.
Wei WuXian wasn't sure what had just happened.
He had seen the flash of hunger in those beautiful golden eyes, and for a second, he hadn’t known what to do.
He really liked Lan Zhan.
But at the same time, this was his first job in so long, and he didn't want anything to jeopardise his employment. If he was to succeed and really get back on his feet, then he had to maintain a professionalism about it.
And that meant, no hanky panky.
His heart sank, even as he had that thought.
Lan WangJi was so attractive, so hot...there were times that Wei WuXian thought he was going to melt at his scorching gazes...he was temptation on the two hottest pair of legs Wei WuXian had yet to see...but he had to be strong.
There was no way he was going to get himself fired. Everything depended on him being able to keep this job, and provide for A-Yuan, and he was going to make sure of it.
"Hanguang-Jun is great, you know." Lan JingYi said, conversationally.
"Huh?" Wei WuXian was dragged away from his thoughts. "Who?"
"Hanguang-Jun...you know, Lan WangJi? He's great." JingYi's eyes met his in the rear view mirror. "We call him that because he's always dressed in white, or near enough, but he's like a superhero. Every time there's a problem, he can just swoop in and solve it. Just like that." He snapped his fingers, shaking his head. "I've been a driver for many years, seen many people and let me tell you, some of them had a stick shoved so far up their ass, you'd think they were a satellite. But Hanguang-Jun...he's the real deal. I'm just saying..." He grinned cheekily at Wei WuXian.
Wei WuXian smiled weakly and agreed, inside his head.
That was the trouble.
Lan WangJi was too good, and he didn't know what he was going to do about him...
************
A-Yuan was ready and waiting by the door, with the teacher, holding his hand. He had his bunny backpack on and a picture he was waving around with happy excitement as Wei WuXian climbed down from the car.
A-Yuan tore away from his teacher and ran towards Wei WuXian, who picked him up easily and threw him into the air a few times, just to hear him laughing loudly.
He kissed those round cheeks in a mixture of sloppy and raspberry blowing, making A-Yuan giggle and chortle breathlessly. Then he looked at the white car.
"Baba...Where's our car?" He panted, his chocolate eyes brimming with excitement.
"I have a surprise for you!" Wei WuXian told him, as they got into the back of the white car.
"Weally?" A-Yuan looked up at him, expectantly.
"Yes, really, my beautiful little radish!" Wei WuXian was filled with joy and it showed. He kissed A-Yuan's forehead enthusiastically.
What a contrast from this morning!
He had woken up with several alerts on his phone, and his heart had sank at the news that Lan WangJi had gone viral. On every platform known to man.
He half thought he would have been fired straight away, and it was that thought which had made him run out of his caravan straight away to find Lan Zhan and tell him. Who'd have thought that the Lans would be unfazed by this?
Or that they would support him? So much?
Not him!
And then to offer to babysit A-Yuan? With the money he saved from that, his paddling pool idea was looking more and more real every minute.
"Here." Lan JingYi, while concentrating on the road, handed them a bag of mini cookies.
"Er...thank you?" Wei WuXian told him, uncertainly.
"It's a snack. You know, in case you get hungry before dinner." He amended.
Wei WuXian was incredibly touched.
"Thank you." He said again, and this time it was more sincerely spoken.
"Cawwots?" A-Yuan asked, hopefully.
"Next time, little guy!" JingYi caught Wei WuXian’s eyes again, and smiled warmly.
By the time they pulled up outside the Lan Mansion, the bag of cookies was a distant memory, because Wei WuXian had insisted on JingYi sharing with them. So at every red traffic light, there was a mad scramble to pass him a few before he had to use both hands again.
Of course they all three got covered in chocolate smears because it wasn't the smoothest of rides, but as they tumbled out of the car, they found two Lans waiting for them.
Uncle Qiren scooped up the little lad immediately, who waved good bye to his dad and his new friend enthusiastically, before concentrating on whatever this new person was going to show him. Uncle Qiren had used the magic word, and now A-Yuan was rip-roaring and ready to go and visit the bunnies.
Wei WuXian found himself looking up into the most intense golden eyes, and suddenly his mouth went dry.
Lan WangJi was looking at him as if he was his next dinner, and his favourite dish was called Wei WuXian.
Lan WangJi stepped forward and opened the boot, loading up his bags. He had rolled up his sleeves so his forearms, muscular and drool-worthy were clenching and flexing in the most delightful manner.
Wei WuXian was staring at him, all the way until Lan WangJi slammed the door down and looked back at him.
"See something you like?" Lan WangJi said, raising a brow with a knowing smile.
Wei WuXian slapped himself, shook his head, and dived into the car.
I'm a professional, I'm a professional, he chanted, squeezing his eyes shut tightly.
This was going to be a tough six weeks...and he knew it.
