Together

As Sparks started to move Digit's unmoving body around, Luna was standing behind him with her fingers intertwined and pressed to her forehead, shielding her tight shut eyelids. She began muttering prayers under her breath as the obnoxiously loud sound of wires being messed with rang out in the entire clearing.

Her shoulders tensed up more and more as the seconds passed, body trembling as she anticipated and dreaded for the moment an explosion would blow everything up and her eyes would open to the very image of hell.

However, it never came.

Her eyes shot open as the familiar sound of an activation echoed, a gasp soon following the opening of two pitch black eyes.

"DIGIT!" She shouted in pure euphoria as her vision blurred with tears of joy, her body instinctively diving before landing on her knees and squeezing the bot in her arms like her life depended on it. "You're here! You're really here! I can't believe my eyes!"

An electronic hum responded to her as the Tiny being seemed to bounce on her lap, the two eyes narrowing to form two perfect half-circles that faced the sky. She had recognized the behavior as a sign of happiness. The noise sounded distorted and the bright orange paint she had applied a few months ago had faded to a faint and dirty beige due to the lack of maintenance, yet, she couldn't find her special little guy more perfect.

Sparks, who had been idly watching this whole time, eventually joined the hug, resting his head on Digit's smaller one. "Welcome home, little guy."

"Digit!" Luna called, temporarily stopping the chomping of the fresh batch of vegetables underneath her hands as she turned around, her black hair cascading down her back. "Can you please boil some water for Mama?"

A positive response came from the bot, his flamboyant orange body disappearing around the corner in a flash as the sound of bubbles started to escape from the boiler.

The woman sighed in content, eyes filling with a feeling akin to nostalgia as she reminded herself that it has already been two weeks since Digit has been found again.

That whole situation still seemed unreal to her, the odds of Digit getting on the new planet were way too slim to have actually occurred and yet, her bipping Digit charm was always here to remind her that her special little guy was really here.

She couldn't be happier about that.

Another electronic hum got her back into reality as she realized the room temperature had increased slightly. There Digit stood, his stomach case slightly ajar and letting steam escape from the hole.

"You shouldn't put that in your stomach's compartment, Digit." She gently scolded, grabbing the tea pot. "You know that moisture isn't good for you." The bot seemed to register the information, nodding after a few.

She smiled at that, reaching for him before petting his head for a little while. Digit bounced again, leaning against her hand. His body moved upward again and for a moment, he looked confused before his eyes turned into half-circles but this time, they were turned toward the ground indicating some kind of sadness.

"Digit? What's wrong?" Luna asked worriedly, stopping her activities and putting down her knife before kneeling down to her bot's level. Another electric hum responded to her question. It would just sound like gibberish to any other person but she was his creator, and she dared even say his mother therefore, understanding him was a piece of cake.

"You... wish you were a human?" She repeated, disbelief laced in her voice. "Why?"

Digit didn't respond this time.

He escaped from Luna's touch before going back to where he came from, his body disappearing from around the corner.

When Sparks came back from repairing some bots back in the main area, dinner had already been prepared and the plates were only set for him at the table by none other than his fiancé, who also just happened to be waiting for him at the table. When he enthusiastically greeted her as usual, his lover responded in a small voice, eyes narrowed and eyebrows furrowed. That was the first red flag.

He raised an eyebrow at that, noticing that Digit was also absent, which was weird since Luna would always take him wherever she went in fear of losing him again. Second red flag.

When the two actually started eating, the room was dead silent apart from Sparks's occasional attempts at breaking the ice. That was the third red flag and the one that pushed him over the edge.

"Luna." Said girl looked up, blinking in surprise. After they started dating, the man had the habit of calling her by pet names so she was probably not expecting to hear her actual name come out of his mouth. "What's going on? You've been acting odd this entire evening, did something happen?"

She looked down, focusing on pushing the vegetables she prepared toward the rice on the plate with her fork as an attempt to distract herself. "I had a conversation with Digit earlier."

Sparks held back the urge to remark that the little bot, as much as he cared about him, couldn't physically have a conversation with them since he neither possessed a screen to write his thoughts or a voicebox to talk with them. It always made Luna upset for some reasons and clearly, she didn't need that right now.

Plus, he never liked to see her sad, she looked way better with a beaming smile.

"He expressed his regret about... not being like us. About not being a human." Sparks's eyes widened, his shock so raw that all of his muscles froze as well, his fork falling onto the plate with a loud clattering noise. None of the two paid any mind to it, way too absorbed in their conversation to do so.

"What?" He incredulously let out, his brain working furiously to determine just how advanced Luna had programmed Digit and just how empathetic the little guy was. "But how..."

Luna shook her head. "I don't know either." After a moment, pushing her vegetables had become boring and in a feat of misery, she pushed her plate on the other side of the table before letting her head fall into her crossed arms. "And I feel horrible because I can't do anything about it."

She sighed, plopping her chin up. "I'm his mother, I'm supposed to be able to help him achieve his dreams but I can't turn him into a human, our technology may be advanced but that's simply impossible ." She finally whined, going back to sobbing into her arms.

Sparks got up from his chair before crouching to Luna's level and wrapping her shoulders with his arm, fingers caressing her shoulder to soothe her. "Even if we can't turn him into a human, we might be able to make a compromise and give him a more... humanoid body."

The woman around his arm froze in shock, turning to look at him so fast he could swear he heard her neck snap. She stared into his eyes with widened pupils, mouth completely agape. She attempted several times to speak only for the words to be stuck in her throat. Millions of thoughts ran through her head before a smile stretched her lips.

"Sparks, you're a genius!" She exclaimed enthusiastically before jumping on her feet, pushing the chair down. She grabbed Sparks by the collar before pressing a quick kiss on his cheek, thanking him again for existing before rocketing out of the room at record speed. The unexpected gesture had Sparks stuck in the position Luna left him in for a good ten minutes, his face a cherry red color.

Building a humanoid body had been way harder and had taken way longer than Sparks and Luna anticipated. By the time they had finished, they had gone from fiancés to husband and wife. It had taken two long painful years for this almost fantastical project to come to life but at last, both scientists stood in front of the small humanoid body covered in rubbish with wide grins on their faces.

The both of them had agreed on making the body look a mix of the two of them after Luna insisted on it, saying that this way, Digit would feel even more like family. Sparks had agreed almost right away, curious on how that 'child' would turn out.

Her and him haven't spoken about any heir yet but both knew the subject had passed through each other's mind once or twice ever since Eden had gotten pregnant with twins last spring.

Plus, he really just loved Digit and adored the idea of him feeling even more at home with them both if he were to look like the two of them. After all, this little guy was the reason why he got a chance to confess to Luna in the first place so he really owed him one!

"Look at it, Sparks!" His lover exclaimed, her voice going up an octave because of how excited she was. "It looks so beautiful!"

The body's color was similar to Sparks' and its form in general had also been made to mimic his. Other features like the hair's color or the shape of the eyes have been taken after Luna, his mother. The only feature that hadn't been taken from either of them were the color of the eyes, a bright and flamboyant orange, meant to reminiscence about Digit's former self.

He too started to admire the body's shape, walking closer to Luna and reaching for her hand. The latter intertwined their hands tenderly as her eyes softened even more at the sight. "I can't wait to see it moving... We should go get Digit."

Sparks nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we should. He has been starting to get suspicious as to why we were spending so much time together without him you know?"

Her eyes widened in horror. "Oh no, he must have thought that we were mad at him! I have to go fix that right now!" She shouted, hastily letting go of her husband and climbing up the stairs four by four. Sparks tried to call out for her to stop her but by the time he had approached the staircase, the other had already disappeared with the only witness to her waking the slightly ajar door.

Sparks shook his head in amusement as a small smile stretched his lips.

He loved her so much.

When Sparks had finally been introduced to his new body, the bot had initially only stared at it without any reaction. This had made both of them panic, suddenly anxious about the bot not liking the body. They had never shown it to him to keep it as a surprise but now they were starting to regret it.

Just as they were about to apologize for that and take the body away, Digit had suddenly displayed the most joy a bot had that the two of them had ever seen. He was so excited to switch bodies that Luna didn't even need to tell him to get into the lab to transfer his hardware to this new body, the boy had bolted right into the doors, letting out soft electric hums at each step.

The two scientists looked at each other before chuckling softly and walking in after him.

***

"... And done!" Sparks shouted after a while, stepping back from the unmoving vessel. He wiped some sweat that had gathered on his forehead before he signaled for his wife to activate the bot.

She clicked on the button and for a few seconds nothing happened.

Both started to panic again before bright orange eyes appeared in their vision. Digit blinked, looking down at his hands before getting onto his feet. It definitely changed from his other body but he was happy.

After he had gained knowledge on how to control this new and unfamiliar body, he stepped closer to who he called parents and finally did what he had been dreaming of doing this entire time.

He hugged them tight.
