❝He's my little brother. Not yours.❞

The first day of school for Lilianna and her younger brother, Liam was actually in the middle of the year but luckily they started a new semester. Lilianna was very nervous as she'd be leaving her best friend behind and having to either make friends or ignore everyone and right now her preference was to ignore everyone and just make it through her junior year.
Lilianna put on her outfit, hoping that the girls at this school didn't dress up everyday. For Lilianna, a floral top paired with a pair of dark jeans and a pair of black heeled ankle boots. She put her hair up into a ponytail before going downstairs. Her mom was home and was dishing breakfast to Liam.
"Hi Mom. Liam." She greeted both of them, "Um, Liam? Do you want a ride to school?"
Liam nodded, his mouth already stuffed with eggs. Lilianna rolled her eyes and sat down at the table devouring her food in a mere ten minutes before she headed back upstairs to brush her teeth.
When she got in the car with Liam, he immediately turned to her, "Um. I'm trying out for the lacrosse team today. Will you stay after and watch?"
Lilianna smiled, "You are?"
"Yeah..." Liam smiled.
"I'm proud of you, Li, considering what happened at Devenfort." Lilianna smiled at her brother before pulling out of the driveway, "And yes, I will stay after school and watch."
"Thanks." Liam nodded, "Are you going to try out for anything or join anything?"
"Band maybe but I don't know if I'll have time. I have a full schedule plus I still have to work at La Bella." Lilianna reminded her brother. It wasn't that she didn't want to join something as she knew it would look good on her college and job applications, but she was overwhelmed and changing schools in the middle of the year wasn't helping with that, "I'm trying not to let anything distract me, this year."
"Are you not going to try to make friends?" Liam asked.
"Li." Lilianna sighed, "I'll try but you know I've never really been good at making friends."
Liam didn't answer her and Lilianna was sort of glad that he wasn't pushing her to make friends. Lilianna and her brother had always been close but last year they didn't talk as much and Lilianna blamed herself a little bit. When he started to have problems with his coach and his team, Lilianna just pushed him and his feelings aside. And now she was paying the consequences. Even though they weren't that high for her, she was still upset.
Lilianna pulled into the high school parking lot, narrowly missing a couple of students who weren't watching where they were walking. She turned to her brother before he got out of the car, "So, I'll see you after school."
Liam nodded before getting out of the car. Lilianna watched until he had gotten almost to the door of the school before she grabbed her backpack off of the backseat and climbed out of the car. She locked it and made her way to the front of the building, trying not to notice the way many of the students stared at her.
Lilianna went right to the office and grabbed her schedule before she found her first class which happened to be precalculus. There were a number of students already sitting in the classroom but Lilianna went to a seat in the middle row and didn't talk to any of them.
She pulled out her precalculus book that she had purchased beforehand when she felt someone looking at her. She raised her eyes and looked up to see one of the boys who frequented the pizzeria. He gave her a small smile that looked very quizzical and she tilted her head to the side in confusion. Brett had told her that he was interested in her but he didn't seem as interested in her now. The boy had on a plaid shirt over a black one making him look a little more pale than before. Lilianna turned away from him when she felt like she was looking at him for too long.
The teacher looked at the class before speaking, "Alright. Volunteers to the board. Lydia. Diego. Malia." She then noticed Lilianna there and motioned for her to come up as well.
Lilianna tried to keep her face neutral as she looked at the other students before walking over to the teacher.
"Hi. You must be Lilianna." She smiled at Lilianna, "Your parents mentioned you transferred from Devenford Prep and that you were an exceptional student. I'm Ms. Flemming and if you need anything just let me know."
Lilianna nodded at her, "Thank you."
"Since it's your first day, I'm not going to make you go to the board but in the future you probably will." She smiled and then motioned for Lilianna to go back to her seat.
The boy who was looking at her before gave her a glance before looking at the board where the three students were solving a problem. Lilianna took out her notebook and attempted to solve it by herself before she looked at the answers that the students were writing on the board. When she had finished it she heard someone's phone buzzing and she turned in her seat. The boy in the plaid shirt was rummaging for his phone and he glanced at it before a worried expression crossed his face.
Lilianna raised an eyebrow at him before he put it away. Lilianna sighed and swore to herself to ignore him and anyone else for the rest of the day.

Lilianna walks out to the field behind the school and makes her way to the bleachers. She finds a spot away from most of the other spectators and pulls out her precalculus book. Lilianna wasn't surprised about the amount of homework that she'd gotten due to it being the middle of the year and she was taking a bunch of advanced classes, but she'd hoped that the teachers would go easy on her due to her being new.
As she had promised, she hadn't made any new friends thus far and she didn't expect to. Brett had texted her asking her how her first day was and she had said that it was okay and that she was dying under homework. He wanted to know if she was making friends and she said she wasn't. She didn't mention the boy from the pizzeria at all because she was worried about what he'd say.
She looked up when two girls sat a short ways away from her. She didn't know either of them but she did see them in her precalculus class as well as in a couple other of her classes. She glanced at them and the one with brown hair done in a braid looked straight back at her. Lilianna gave the girl a tight-lipped smile but didn't say anything else.
Lilianna should have been used to stares as people had been giving her looks all day due to her being new, but she wasn't getting used to them. She wanted to tell others to stop looking at her but she'd rather not make a ton of enemies on her first day.
Lilianna took out her notebook and began the equations that she was instructed to do until her younger brother Liam jogged over to her.
"You came!" Liam grinned.
"I promised I would." Lilianna laughed at her brother, "You have nothing to worry about. You're easily one of the best players here."
"Thanks Lil." Liam glanced at the other players, "Well, I'd best get back. Have you not made any friends yet? Those two girls over there keep looking at you."
Lilianna groaned, "I don't want any new friends right now."
"Whatever you say, Lil." Liam shook his head at her but didn't question her as he went back onto the field.
Lilianna wasn't surprised when Liam got all his shots into the goal and she even set down her book to cheer. The two girls gave her a glare and Lilianna shrugged before speaking to them, "So, I can't cheer on my little brother?"
"He's your brother?" The Asian girl asked her and Lilianna nodded.
"Yeah, he is."
"He's really good." She remarked.
Lilianna didn't say anything to that especially when she noticed the other girl giving her a glare. Lilianna watched as the two boys she had seen in the diner walked over in front of the goal. Suddenly, the other players didn't manage to make any shots. That is, until Liam. Liam made a shot and the two boys looked shocked.
The girl with the braid stood up and yelled, "That was luck! Do over."
Lilianna shot her a look. It was practice. There weren't do overs and the coach said the same thing.
"Ten bucks on Scott and Stiles." She yelled.
Lilianna's ears perked as she finally heard the two boys names for the first time though she still didn't know who was who.
"I'll take that action." The Coach nodded, "Get back in there Liam."
Lilianna quickly looked at her brother who shot her a nervous look. Lilianna shook her head at him to warn him not to do whatever he was planning but Liam didn't seem to listen. He followed Coach's instructions as did Scott and Stiles.
Lilianna swallowed as she watched her brother head towards the goal but he didn't make it. One of the boys intercepted him and seemed to flip him over. Lilianna stood up quickly as she watched Liam fall.
"Don't move. Don't touch him." Coach ran towards him.
"Liam!" Lilianna jumped up from her seat leaving her bag and things there. She raced towards her brother but one of the boys on the team pushed her back, "He's my brother you idiots."
Lilianna pushed the boy away and knelt beside Liam who was insisting he was alright. Lilianna gave him a stern look, "Li. I think your leg is broken."
Scott and Stiles helped him up, slinging his arms over their shoulders. Liam groaned, "Yeah. I think it's my leg."
"I think we'd better get him to the nurse." The pale boy said and Coach nodded.
"No. We're taking him to a hospital." Lilianna insisted as she followed them. She grabbed her stuff from the bleachers before running to catch up.
"Fine. We'll take him to a hospital." The pale boy sounds exasperated with her and he looks her up and down before asking, "Um. Wait he's your brother."
"Yeah which is why I would like to be the one to take him to the hospital." Lilianna tells them, crossing her arms over her chest. They were currently sitting in the nurse's office trying to figure out what was going on with Liam.
The other boy raised an eyebrow at her, "Who exactly are you?"
Lilianna blew a piece of hair out of her face before answering, "Well, if you must know. Hi, I'm Lilianna Dunbar. I transferred from Devenford Prep and I'm a junior. We've met before at the La Bella Pizzeria and you just hurt my brother so I'm not the most pleased human being you'll come across today."
"Wow." He responded, messing up his hair before introducing himself, "I'm Scott and this is Stiles."
The nurse came over to them then which saved Lilianna from having to make a comment, "He needs to be taken to the hospital."
"Of course. I'll do it." Lilianna volunteered.
The nurse glanced at her, "Are you related to Mr. Dunbar?"
"I'm his sister." Lilianna nodded.
"Very well." The nurse nodded.
Scott and Stiles eyed her suspiciously before, "I think it would be better if we took him."
Lilianna glared at them, "Seriously? He's my little brother. Not yours."
"Well we have room for the wheelchair and I'm guessing you don't." Stiles said looking at her.
"You've never even seen my car, Stiles." Lilianna protested but then decided that if they weren't going to let her take him, she'd just have to follow them to the hospital, "Fine. You can take him to the hospital. I have no idea why you're so eager but it saves me from listening to my little brother in pain."
The two boys stared at her before nodding to each other, "Okay um. See you around."
"I hope not." Lilianna smirked at them as they left the room. She didn't wish to see them around but the world didn't work that way, unfortunately.
