CHAPTER THREE, shazam & skyvolt
"This is our security scanner." Darla explains to Devyn and Billy the next day at school. "Like at an airport. It's totally safe."
Billy nods. "We know what it is." He glances at Eugene and Pedro who stood by him. "Does she always do this?"
Eugene was busy playing with a video game, but Pedro nods and hums in response. "Silence makes me uncomfortable." Darla admitted.
Eugene rolls his eyes. "She's almost never uncomfortable."
Devyn walks after Billy once she got her backpack back from the security guard, smiling slightly when she saw Darla hugged Billy. "Have a good first day, big brother."
Billy pushes her away. "Look, you don't have to hug me all the time." He shrugs. "We're not actually brother and sister so."
Darla frowns and looks down sadly. "I'm sorry."
Devyn stands by Billy, watching Darla walk over to where Freddy stood in the hallway with a frown on her face. "Hey." Freddy greeted her and she greeted him back in a sad tone.
Billy looks at Freddy with regret. "I didn't mean to make her cry." Freddy waved a dismissive hand, reassuring Billy it was okay.
"Great job, B." Devyn comments, using the nickname she only only used, crossing her arms. "You made that sweet little girl cry on our first day of school here."
"I didn't mean to." Billy admitted.
Devyn sighs, throwing her arm around his shoulders. "It's alright. Let's get to class."
****
At lunch that day, Devyn sat by Billy at a lunch table that was empty besides them. Until Freddy walked over and joined them. "Flight or invisibility?" Freddy suddenly asked.
Devyn raises her eyebrows. "What?"
"If you could have one superpower." Freddy said. "Flight or invisibility? What would you guys pick? I mean, everybody chooses flight. And you know why?"
"So they could fly away from this conversation?" Billy remarked, wincing when Devyn kicked his ankle under the table.
"No, 'cause heroes fly." Freddy corrects him. "And who doesn't want people to think they're a hero, right? But invisibility, no way." As he continues to ramble, Devyn and Billy get done with their lunches and got up to throw their trash away and put away the tray. "I mean, that's pervy. Spying around on people who don't even know you're there. Sneaking around everywhere, total villain power, right?" He grimaced when he realized he said that a bit too loud since the cafeteria grew quiet and everyone was looking at him. Things went back to normal as he got up and followed Devyn and Billy.
"Then, they did this study, and this is a real thing. They asked people the same question: 'What superpower do you want?'. But this time, they do it so the answers were anonymous." Freddy continues. "And-And most people since they knew were secret, they chose invisibility. And I think that's because 'cause most people don't feel like heroes on the inside deep down. You're running away." Freddy noticed as Billy stopped at the bathroom.
"I mean, one of you stole my Superman bullet." Billy exchanged a look with Devyn.
"And dudes, I get it. I get it. You guys survived being screwed over way too many times. You don't trust anyone. That's the thing with invisibility, you'll end up by yourself."
"We didn't steal your dumb bullet." Billy muttered. He then opened the bathroom door and walked in.
"Devyn-" Freddy calls out to Devyn as she began walking down the hallway to her locker. "Look, I'm sorry."
"It doesn't matter." Devyn told him and doesn't say anything else as she continued to walk to her locker.
****
After school that day, Devyn and Billy walked down the steps of the school, being greeted by Mary.
"Hey, how was it today?"
Billy shrugs in response. Mary raises her eyebrows. "That good, huh?"
Devyn chuckles, rolling her eyes at Billy's response. "It wasn't bad." She replied to Mary, who smiled at her.
"Thank you for giving me an actual response, Devyn."
Then suddenly Freddy got knocked down when a truck pulled up in front of where he was walking. Mary's eyes widen and she quickly walks over to him. "Freddy." She kneels beside him, looking at him with concern. "Are you okay?"
Freddy nods. "Yes."
Two older guys get out of the truck and Mary stands up, glaring at them. "What the h**l? What is wrong with you two?"
The curly-haired boy pulls Freddy up and pushes him against the truck which caused him to wince in pain. The other boy laughs. "No way is that gonna buff out."
"You gonna pay for that, Freeman?" The curly-haired boy asked.
"For the dent you made almost hitting me? Yeah, sure. Do you guys take these?" Freddy smiled and flipped the boys off.
Devyn's eyes widen and she watched with shock when the boys grabbed Freddy's crutch and shove him on the ground, beginning to kick him. "Brett, stop!" Mary shouted.
"Don't touch my brother!" Darla said worriedly.
"What, do you need your fake family to stand up for you?"
"Stand up for yourself."
"Yeah."
"Let's go." Billy mumbled to Devyn and began to walk down the sidewalk.
"What?" Devyn looks at him with surprise and glances over at Freddy before she quickly follows Billy. "Aren't we gonna help?"
"He'll be fine." Billy reassured her, pulling the red hood of his red jacket over his head as snow kept falling down.
Devyn frowns and puts her hands in her pockets to try to keep her hands warm. She walked down the sidewalk with Billy, trying to block out the fact that Freddy was getting beat up.
"What are you gonna do? You gonna go home and cry to mommy? Oh yeah, you don't have a mommy."
Billy stops walking when he heard one of the older boys say that. Devyn stops walking as well, glancing at him with slight confusion. "Billy?"
"We're going to help him." Billy told her and walked back over to the group with anger overtaking his features.
"We should've done that in the first place," Devyn nods and quickly follows him. "But I'm right behind you."
.
Billy grabs the crutch that was on the ground, whacking one of the boys in the face with it and he fell to the ground. Devyn picked up her skateboard that was attached to her backpack and hits the other boy in the stomach, sending him falling to the ground.
"Oh, sorry about that." Billy pretends to apologize. "That wasn't fair, but then again, you don't fight fair, so."
"Billy!" Devyn's eyes widen when the boy Billy had knocked to the ground stood and shoved Billy against the truck. The older boy punched Billy in the stomach before pushing him to the ground. While Devyn was distracted, that gave the other boy the advantage to grab her arm and twist it around which made her wince in pain and let go of the grip she had on her skateboard. The boy then let go of her arm and shoved her backwards roughly. Her eyes widened as she stumbled backwards, landing on the ground beside Billy. She rubbed her arm that hurt now hurt slightly, watching with surprise when Eugene suddenly stood in front of her and Billy.
"Back off, a-holes!" Eugene shouted, swinging around nunchucks he had which made Devyn confused. She didn't know how he had them or where he got them.
The older boys laughed when Eugene accidentally hit himself in the head. Meanwhile, Billy gets up along wtih Devyn. His eyebrows are knitted with concern as he glances at her. "You okay?"
"Not really 'cause we should probably run now!" Devyn exclaimed when she saw the angry looks on the older boys faces.
"Yep," Billy's eyes widen after he saw the angry looks. "Let's go." He turned, around, beginning to run down the sidewalk with Devyn.
"Hey!" One of the boys called out to them and began to chase them.
"Didn't expect to be running from bullies and jumping over a fence today, but here we are." Devyn mumbled as she jumped over a fence along with Billy.
"Just a normal day, right?" Billy joked and Devyn sarcastically laughed. The two best friends run into the subway station, pushing past people that were in the way and Devyn apologized to them when they looked at her and Billy with offense or with an upset expression.
Devyn makes sure Billy gets on the railing first before he eventually follows her as the two older guys ran down the stairs. When they reached the bottom of the railing, Billy grabbed onto her hand, not wanting to lose her as they pushed past more people to get onto the train. They make it on the train and Devyn let out a sigh of relief, her tensed shoulders relaxing when the door closed before the older boys could get on.
Billy laughs, smirking at the boys. "You think this is funny?" One of the boys questioned angrily.
"You're dead, guys!" The other one threatened.
"We know where you go to school, guys!"
After hearing that last shout, Devyn had to admit she was nervous. She looked down at the floor, twisting one of the rings she wore on her left hand. "Hey," Billy said to her, gaining her attention. She looks at him to see worried eyes looking back at her. "You okay?"
"No, I dropped my skateboard." Devyn pouts. "Hopefully Mary or one of the others gets it before they leave." She sighs, shaking her head. "And also I'm just a little nervous and anxious."
"We'll be fine. I'll make sure they won't hurt you again." Billy reassured him, gently squeezing her hand. Devyn smiled a bit, feeling slightly relieved and comforted by his words, but she was still nervous and anxious. Billy let go of her hand as they both turn around and walk over to sit down.
Billy sets his backpack on the empty seat beside his right side and sighs. He pulls his hood down and closes his eyes as he leans his head against the wall. Devyn looks around the train, noticing there weren't many people on the train which she was glad about. She hated it when the train was full of people. She leaned her head back against the wall, furrowing her eyebrows when she saw the sign that was supposed to read what the next stop said now had some weird symbols on it.
"Uh, Billy." Devyn slaps Billy's arm to get his attention. He opens his eyes, glancing at her with confusion. "Tell me you see that too and that I'm not going crazy." She pleaded, pointing at the sign. Billy glanced at the sign and his eyes widened.
"You're not going crazy 'cause I see it too."
Devyn sits up straighter and looks around with wide eyes when everyone else in the train disappeared as the lights began to flicker. "What the heck is happening?" Devyn questioned.
Billy sits up straighter, looking around with confusion and a bit of fear. "Hello?" He calls out, but he got no response. "What's going on?" Billy looked at the windows with surprise when frost suddenly formed on all the windows.
"That's frost." Devyn notices, staring at it with shock. "How-How is that even possible? How is any of this possible?" Devyn and Billy grabbed onto each other instinctively when they were suddenly thrown backwards as the rain drove faster. Billy tried calling out for help, but once again he got no response. Devyn and Billy both breathed heavily, looking around with scared expressions as the train suddenly came to a stop. The lights stopped flickering when the train stopped and they turned back on.
The two teens stand up nervously, grabbing their backpacks. They walk to the doors, anxiously waiting for them to open. Their eyes widen and mouths open out of shock upon seeing a dark cave that was only lit up by some torches. "Holy moly." Billy mumbled.
"Pretty sure a scary lookin' cave is not on my agenda today." Devyn remarked as Billy looked over at the destination map to see if a cave was a stop.
"I think we have to go there." Billy sighed, falling back in place beside Devyn.
"Do we really?" Devyn nervously questions. "I mean, we were taken here against our will."
"Do you see any way to get back?" Billy asked her, raising his eyebrows at her. Devyn frowned when she realized he was right.
"Alright." Devyn agrees. She gestures for him to walk into the cave. "You first."
Billy rolls his eyes and looks back at the cave nervously. "Hello?" He called out, stepping off the train and Devyn followed him. When they walked further into the cave, they heard a loud noise which caused them to turn around with fear.
"What the h**l?" Billy exclaims out of frustration. "Who's doing this?" He inquired, his voice echoing.
"Uh, Billy..." Devyn said nervously, hitting his arm to get his attention as she stared at the sight in front of her. She had to admit she was both in awe and scared. Billy glanced at her with confusion but then turned around to look at what Devyn looked at.
In front of the two teens was a large throne room. There were eight thrones at the back of the room with a lightning bolt above the throne in the middle. Devyn noticed that there was a person sitting on the throne in the middle and another one sitting on the throne besides him. Devyn and Billy exchanged a glance, not really knowing what to do. They both looked back at the people sitting on the thrones and Billy cleared his throat to get their attention.
The people stand up from their thrones, one is a man and one is a woman. And by the grey hair the best friends assumed they were old. What confused them the most was the outfits they had on and the staff the man held.
"Hi. Um, we were supposed to get off at 30th-"
"Billy Batson." The man interrupted him.
Billy stares at him with confusion. "How'd you know my name?"
"I am the last of the consul of wizards. Keeper of the Rock of Eternity." The man explained.
Devyn and Billy continue to look at him with confusion. "Yeah, that doesn't really explain anything." Devyn remarks. "Do you really think we know what that is?"
"Oh. You're that guy. Listen, we don't have any money." Billy said as the man began walking down the steps.
"Do not patronize me, boy!" The man demanded. The two best friends gasped and grabbed onto each other when the ground suddenly shook as the man hit the ground with the staff. They looked around with confusion and awe as a yellow mist flew around them. They let go of each other, watching as the yellow mist formed a city around them.
"You are standing in the source of all magic. The Rock of Eternity. Seven foes, seven wizards. But long ago, we chose a champion." A person wearing a suit similar to the man was wearing is formed out of the yellow mist. "And we chose recklessly." The person shot a lightning bolt at a building which disappeared and the yellow mist of that building formed into Seven Deadly Sins. "He used his power for revenge. Releasing the Seven Deadly Sins into the world." The yellow mist show people running away from the Seven Deadly Sins. "Millions of lives were lost. Entire civilizations erased from existence." Then all of the yellow mist went away as the man finished speaking. That is why me and my partner vowed never to pass on our magic until we found two truly good people."
Devyn raises her eyebrows. "Your partner?"
"Yes, my sidekick." The man nods. "The woman who fought by my side and helped me protect the Rock of Eternity."
"Okay, then where is she?" Devyn questioned, crossing her arms.
"Unfortunately, she did not make it." The man said in a sad expression. "But her dying wish was for me to find someone good enough that I could pass her magic to." He walks around the two best friends. "We wanted to find truly good people with strong spirits. Pure in heart."
"Look, man, maybe this is magic," Billy shrugs. "I don't know, but," He shakes his head and looks sad. "The people you're looking for? Good, pure people? I'm not one of them. I mean, I don't know if anyone is really."
The man stands in front of Devyn and Billy. "You, Billy Batson and Devyn Roberts, are all I have. All the world has." He slams the staff onto the ground and it echoes in the cave. "Lay your hands on my staff."
"Gross." Billy's face scrubched up in disgust, taking a step back.
"And say my name so my power will flow through you." The man instructs. "I open my heart to you, Billy Batson. And in so doing, I choose you as champion."
"Okay, if I'm supposed to be the sidekick, do I do that to?" Devyn inquired, tilting her head to the side.
"Yes," The man nods. "But you will say my partner's name."
"Thanks. That's real sweet of you, mister, but we really gotta get going." Billy started to back up, grabbing Devyn's arm to pull her with him. He stopped whenever the man spoke again.
"My partner, brothers, and sisters were slain by the sins." He raises his voice at what he says next, pointing at the seven thrones. "The thrones lie empty! My magic and my partner's magic must be passed through." He faces the two best friends, hitting his staff on the ground again. "Now, speak my name!"
Devyn and Billy exchange a confused look before looking back at the man. "We don't know your name, sir." Billy tells him. "We just met."
"My name is..." The man pauses for a moment before saying, "Shazam."
Devyn and Billy laugh quietly ,glancing at him with amusement. "Seriously?" Devyn raised her eyebrows.
"Wait, for real?" Billy chuckled.
The man hits the staff on the ground again and orders, "Say it!" Devyn flinched along with Billy, both of them quickly agreeing. They both put their hands on the staff and glanced at each other hesitantly.
"All we do is say it and we get the power?" Devyn asked in disbelief, looking back at the man along with Billy. She couldn't believe that any of this was happening. She thought it couldn't be this easy to get whatever power this man was talking about.
Billy shrugs. "I guess." He glances at her. "Say the names on a count of three?"
Devyn nods. "One."
"Two." Billy said.
"Three." They both said and at the same time they say, "Shazam." "Skyvolt." A bright light appears, causing them both to close their eyes so they're not blinded.
"Yes!" The man raises his staff in the air and a lightening bolt shoots out at the top of it. "Carry our names so that you can carry all our powers. The wisdom of Solomon! The strength of Hercules! The stamina of Atlas! The power of Zeus! The courage of Achilles! And speed of Mercury! But for you, Devyn, you will have the strength of Hercules! The stamina of Atlas! The power of Zeus! The speed of Mercury! The healing of Asclepius! And the protective shield of Aegis!"
Devyn stands up since she had been kneeling down, her eyes widen when she noticed her adult hands. "Woah." She grew even more shocked when her voice sounded different. Her heart beat sped up as her nerves and anxiety grew. She glanced down at herself, noticing she looked completely different.
(this is what devyn looks like as skyvolt)
Devyn still had blonde hair, but her hair was now loner than it was before and was put into a side braid. She had on a blue suit, black outlined the sides of the legs and the color teal circled around the black. She wore dark blue boots that had a teal line down the middle and one side of the top outlined with the same teal. She had a black cape as well, but the cape stopped at her thighs and it had a hood. She had on gloves that matched the colors of her suit. She also had a black belt that had two pouches hooked on it.
The hood of the cape was on her head so she pulled it down, glancing over to where Billy stood and she gasped at who she saw. Billy wasn't his fourteen year old self anymore. He was a dark-haired man who had a red suit on with a glowing lightning bolt on his chest and a white cape. Billy was looking at his adult hands with shock and he breathed shakily.
"What happened to me? W-Why am I-" His eyes widen when he noticed Devyn. "Woah." He shakes his head and looks back at the man with a glare. "What did you do to us?" He furrows his eyebrows when he realized his voice sounded different. "What did you do to my voice?"
"You two have been formed to your full potential, Billy Batson and Devyn Roberts." The man explains as the two teens look at him with scared expressions. The man sets the staff in front of Billy and he hesitantly grabs ahold of it. "With your heart, unlock your greatest power. The thrones of our brothers and sisters await!"
Devyn watches with fear when the man's face starts to crumble. Like literally crumble away and then his body did the same until he was completely gone. Billy gasps and he glances at the staff with panic, throwing it to the ground. Devyn picks up her backpack that had fallen to the ground as Billy grabs his backpack with one hand. Then he grabs onto Devyn's hand with his other hand. "Get us out of here!" They both closed their eyes when a bright light appeared.
****
When Devyn and Billy open there eyes, they're confused and surprised to see they were on the subway, but they were still not looking like their regular selves. Devyn gasps when she just realized a dark-skinned man was standing in front of her and Billy with an amused look on his face. "Oh!" He laughs as he looks at Billy. "My brother! I applaud your choices today. Gold shoes, gold belt, white cape, it shouldn't work but hot d**n it does!" He grins, glancing over at Devyn. "And don't get me started with you sister!"
Billy being protective of Devyn looks at him with a small glare and grabs onto Devyn's hand, pulling her up with him and they both quickly get off the train when it stopped. Billy had let go of Devyn's hand when him head hit the top of the train and he stumbled slightly, wincing in pain. He still wasn't used to being this tall. Devyn's height changed as well. She was 5'5 before, but it seemed like she had shrunk because after looking at her reflection in the window it looked like she was around 5'2 now.
"Billy," Devyn shakes her head, turning her attention away from her change of height and glances at Billy with concern. "You okay?'
"Yeah, I just have a headache now." Billy grimaced.
"Alright, let's get out of here." Devyn suggested and pulled her hood up after she put her backpack on. She noticed the strange or amused looks they were getting from everyone in the subway station and she didn't blame them because she would be that way too if she saw someone dressed in a superhero suit at the subway station, but she still felt embarrassed about this.
A/N devyn & billy are now shazam & skyvolt ! so just to clarify, devyn will have almost all the same powers as billy & a couple new ones meaning not only does she have the stamina, strength, the courage & speed she also has enhanced healing & telekinesis! & even though the gods billy got his powers from spell out his hero name, the name isn't for devyn which is obvious lol
