CHAPTER SIX, 'hero' things, arguments & a confession

Later that day, the three teens are walking inside the mall and Billy was in Shazam form. Billy was using small lightning bolts, aiming them at people's phones as the trio walked by while saying, "Your phone's charged!"

As the trio walks through the mall, everyone looks at them weirdly. They didn't care about the odd or confused looks they got and continued walking throughout the mall. "Hey, you know what?" Freddy speaks up, glancing at Billy and Devyn. "You guys need like a mic drop catchphrase."

Billy nods in agreement. "Yeah, I was thinking about that. What about, 'That's why you don't mess with electricity.'"

Devyn and Freddy exchange a look, shaking their heads. "Obviously catchphrases aren't one of your superpowers." Freddy said with a roll of his eyes.

"Yeah," Devyn agrees. "That was awful."

Billy rolls his eyes and shoots a lightning bolt at a guy's phone who was walking by. He smiles. "Your phone is charged."

Devyn looks over her shoulder seeing that the electricity messed up the guy's phone, making him drop it and she winced. She then turned to the front and kept walking along with the boys keep walking as if nothing happened though.

****

"Let their be light!" Billy dramatically said. He grins at Devyn. "Ready?"

"Duh." Devyn responded in an obvious tone, looking at him with a grin. The two best friends aimed their hands at the soda machine and lightening bolts shot at the soda machine. Devyn laughed as many Dr. Peppers kept rolling out of the machine.

Devyn only had a couple of cans while the boys had probably one too many. Billy then sped into a nearby bathroom. "How do I even-Never mind." Billy corrects himself. A lightening bolt appears as he said, "Shazam!"

A guy screams, running out of the bathroom as he struggled to zip his pants. Devyn and Freddy chuckled, sharing an amused smile.

****

"This is stupid. Why are we here?" Devyn complained. She and the boys were now at a strip club. Yeah, she thought the boys were idiots for going here.

"You know why we're here so stop complaining, Dev. You can't go in there anyway, it's a gentlemen's club." Freddy shrugged.

Five minutes later, Billy walks out, carrying a tray of hot wings. Devyn noticed a 'free hot wings' sign by the door so she wasn't surprised he got some. Devyn got up from the fence she was leaning against as Billy walked over to her and Freddy.

Freddy then excitedly bombards Billy with questions. "What did you see? Did you see boobies? Did you see nipples? Why aren't you talking?"

"We're gonna need more money." Billy replied.

"Why?" Freddy asks him. "You were in there for like, five minutes."

"They were very convincing!" Billy defended himself.

Devyn rolls her eyes and crosses her arms. "Oh my gosh."

****

Now the trio stood at an ATM machine. Billy shoots a small lightening bolt at the machine and the three teens watched with shock and excitement when money kept flying out of the machine. Despite the fact Devyn was against this idea and was worried they would get caught, she had to admit it was pretty cool and would never turn down free money. So she excitedly joined the boys with trying to grab as much money as each of them could.

****

With the money they had they bought a nice TV and gaming consoles along with different video games and many other things. The trio are now at a real estate office, why you might ask? Devyn honestly has no idea. She's just going along with them to make sure they don't do anything stupid.

"A lair?" The real estate woman questioned, looking at the boys as if they were crazy. Devyn didn't blame her if she thought they were crazy. Billy was still in his shazam form so she understood why the woman might think they were crazy.

The real estate woman looks over at Devyn for confirmation and Devyn just shrugs her shoulders in response. Freddy nods. "Yes. And obviously, we're gonna be making this purchase anonymously." Billy nodded in agreement.

The real estate woman nods although she had a blank look was on her face. "Obviously."

"If you have a location, like on a cliff or a castle type thing, " Freddy starts to say, but then Billy adds, "Or looking over the water."

Freddy nods. "Or looking over the water, overseas-"

Billy nods in agreement and does a wave with his hand. "Or waterfalls,-"

Freddy smiles. "Yes, waterfalls." Devyn facepalmed and was rethinking why she's friends with these idiots in the first place.

"Listen, Maximum...Voltage is it?" The real estate woman asked as she looked at Billy.

Billy points at her and smiles. "You can call me Max."

"Look, Max. Why don't you just with how many bedrooms you're looking for." The real estate woman suggested.

"1." "7." Billy and Freddy both said in unison.

Devyn looks at the both of them with disbelief. "Seriously? This is all stupid." She sighs heavily, leaning back against her chair and closes her eyes. "I just wanna go back to the house and sleep."

"1?" Freddy asked as he looked at Billy with confusion.

Billy raises his eyebrows. "7? What? Am I running a foster home now?"

Freddy rolled his eyes in response and looked away.

****

Devyn walks down the hallway with Billy and Freddy the next day at school. Devyn is standing by the left side of Billy as she looks around the hallway, noticing a lot of students are watching Freddy's videos of her and Billy on YouTube.

"Hey guys," Freddy speaks up. "You're probably wondering who's filming those videos. I mean, that's bravery in itself."

Devyn smiles teasingly and looks at him curiously. "Are you a little jealous, Freddy?"

Freddy scoffs and rolls his eyes. "I'm not jealous."

"I mean, is it though?" Billy chimed in.

Devyn glances at him wroth confusion. "What?"

"Is it brave filming the videos we make?" Billy asked quieter this time so others won't hear him.

Freddy nods, looking offended that Billy even asked that. "Yeah, I could even argue maybe even more brave."

Devyn and Billy chuckle at his comment. "Holding a camera?" Billy questioned, raising his eyebrows.

"I'm sorry to break it to you Freddy, but I don't think holding a camera is that brave." Devyn admitted while she shrugged her shoulders.

"I was staring into the face of danger." Freddy argued.

"You sound like some weirdo fanboy." Billy chuckled. Devyn raised her eyebrows when Brett, one of the bullies at this school, bumped into Freddy.

"Hey, hey, Freeman." He said, grabbing ahold of Freddy's arm roughly. Devyn glared at him and was quick to move to stand on the other side of Freddy, ready to step in if she needed to.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Freddy told him and Devyn looked over at him with confusion.

"What're you gonna do about?" Berke asks. He was standing by Brett, looking at Freddy with amusement. "Is you're bestie gonna hit us with a wheelchair this time?" Berke taunts. "Or is your girlfriend gonna hit us with one?"

Devyn's hands at her sides formed into fists as she felt her blood boil. She hated both of these idiots so much and wanted to do nothing more than punch them. Devyn glanced over her shoulder when she realized that a crowd of students had formed. She figured they were watching to see if anything interesting was going to happen.

"S-She's not my girlfriend. A-And maybe not him, but I have another best friend who might hunt you down and destroy both of you." Freddy stuttered and Billy gave him a look that says ' are you crazy?'

"Freddy." Billy warned and elbowed Freddy in the side, but Freddy slapped his arm, ignoring his warning.

"You may have heard of him. The, uh, Human Power Storm. Frequency Stringer. Sir Zaps a Lot. Yeah, he's a man of many names." Freddy nodded and Devyn noticed Billy was looking all around him which made her realize he just found out that a crowd of students were around them.

"You know The Red Cyclone? My a** you do!" Brett scoffed, not believing any word coming out of Freddy's mouth.

"Oh, we're a lot closer than you think." Freddy replies. "Maybe even at this very moment."

"This is when things go bad." Devyn mumbled user her breath in a worried tone.

"Prove it." Brett demanded.

"Called it." Devyn muttered and she figured Billy must've heard her because he sent her a small glare that made her stay quiet and look at him with a sheepish expression.

"I will. T-Tomorrow. He's gonna come to lunch. Right, right, Billy?" Freddy asked nervously as he looked over at Billy. Devyn could tell Billy was was panicking. Billy nodded in response.

"Oh yeah, and Superman's gonna be bringing us desert, right?" Berke asked sarcastically.

"No, but Skyvolt might." Freddy added and Devyn glared at him. She was really hoping she wouldn't have to be brought into this.

"So you know Skyvolt too?" Brett asked.

Freddy nods and glances at Devyn with a pleading look. "Right, Devyn?"

Devyn lets out a heavy sigh and nods in agreement. "Yeah, he's right."

"Yeah, Red Cyclone and Skyvolt are like a package deal. You know one you know the other sort of thing." Freddy rambled as Brett and Burke continued to stare at the trio intimidatingly.

Devyn let out a relieved sigh as the bell rings and she looks around when she saw students that had crowded around were leaving now. That's all she wanted to do right now. She just wanted to leave.

"Tomorrow. At lunch. You'll see." Freddy told Brett and Burke.

"And when they don't show, then well, you'll know what will happen." Brett patted Freddy on the shoulder before walking down the hallway with Berke.

"Finally," Devyn sighs. "I thought we would never get to leave this hallway."

"So wait, our identity is a secret so no one we know can get hurt. Except when it makes you look cool, then, then it's all good." Billy gestured to Freddy and he seemed pretty upset about it by the tone of his voice. Now that Devyn thinks about what Billy said he does make a lot of sense.

"Yeah." Devyn nod in agreement. "Yeah, why is that?" She asked and looked over at Freddy as the trio walked around a corner.

"Guys, it's not like they're supervillains. They're super douchebag." Freddy quickly replied.

"So, you're breaking your own rule. Got it." Billy scoffed and avoided eye contact with Freddy.

Freddy glares at the Billy and then at Devyn. "This thing is as much as mine as it is the both of yours."

Devyn and Billy share a look before Billy looks back at Freddy. "I'm starting to think it's all your thing." Billy commented as he walked into his class he had this hour.

"Billy, you're still gonna do it though, right?" Freddy asks hopefully before the door closed. "I mean, what would a good brother do?"

Devyn honestly felt bad for Freddy, but part of her agreed with Billy. She puts her hand on Freddy's shoulder which seemed to startle him, maybe he didn't realize she was still here. "Don't worry, I'll talk to him." He looks relieved when she said that. She smiles slightly at him. "I can't promise that I can get him to agree, but I'll talk to him."

Freddy smiles and nods. "Thanks, Dev." Devyn nodded and sent him a small smile, patting him on the shoulder before walking into the classroom Billy walked in a few seconds ago since they had the same class.

****

"No. I'm not doing it." Billy argued. Devyn and Billy were now in class, sitting next to each other. It was the beginning of class which hasn't started yet. Chatter filled the room as students talked with each other, waiting for class to start while others just walked into the classroom.

Devyn frowns. "Why not?"

"Because he's just taking advantage of us." Billy replies. He shakes his head. "So what's the point?"

"The point is we would be saving our friend from getting beaten up." Devyn told him.

Billy glances at her with raised eyebrows. "So you're going to go through with it?"

"Yeah." Devyn nods. "I'm kinda upset with him," She admits. "But I still wanna be there for him since he's my friend." She looks at him pleadingly. "So, will you do it?"

Billy is quiet for a few moments, thinking over what he should do. He sighs heavily. "I'll think about it."

"Great." Devyn smiled widely.

****

It was now later that night at dinner, Devyn sat beside Billy, sitting across from Freddy. "All hands on deck." Victor reaches his hand towards the middle and everyone else, besides Billy, did the same thing. "Thank you for this family. For this day. Thank you for this food. Sorry Billy's hand is on vacay." Everyone pulls their hand away and began to eat. Since Victor was standing, he went to sit down at the head of the table near where Freddy and Devyn sat. "Big news in Philly. Got a costume hero and sidekick." Victor smiles. "They're doing good."

Devyn and Billy stay quiet as Darla glances at them. "Yeah, but is he though?" Eugene questioned.

"Ooh," Victor grins. "Controversy. Into it. Share with us your perspective, Eugene."

Eugene sets the glass of orange juice he held onto the table. He shrugs. "Just saying. The superhero is, what? Charging people's phone? So what? I can charge a phone with a plug." Billy rolls his eyes as Eugene continues. "And I haven't seen anything about the sidekick beside those videos on that one YouTube channel."

Victor nods. "Preach." He glances at Pedro. "Pedro, any thoughts?"

"Costume's stupid." Pedro comments and the others laugh and smile. "Big white cape, like, he's getting married or something. But the sidekick's costume is cool."

"Yeah, I liked the sidekick." Mary admits. She smiles. "She's cool." Everyone nodded and smiled in agreement.

Devyn grins, happy that everyone liked her. "Yes, she's very cool."

Billy rolls his eyes although there was a small smile on his face because of how happy Devyn was. "What if he didn't get to pick his costume?" He questions. "Ever think about that?"

Rosa nods and glances at Freddy. "You're the specialist, Freddy. What do you think?"

"Yeah, Freddy." Billy looks at Freddy with slight annoyance and nods. "Let's manage to see the positive."

"Okay, well, I think he looks like he doesn't have gratitude for what he's been given." Freddy commented.

"Very specific." Victor smiles. "Alright."

"Maybe to this superhero gratitude doesn't mean having to be clingy." Billy remarked.

Freddy raises his eyebrows. "Clingy? Wow, interesting take." He sarcastically said.

Devyn looks between her friends with a nervous expression as they continue to argue. "You know, maybe this superhero just wants a little me time." Billy spoke.

"You know, me time could also be construed as pushing away his family." Freddy suggested.

"Family?" Billy shakes his head, furrowing his eyebrows. "Is that what they are now?"

"It's a classic symptom of superhero syndrome. Coin by German psychologist Heinrich Von German something where superpowers become an all consuming narcotic." Freddy explained.

Billy rolls his eyes, slamming the fork he held on the table. He stands up and Devyn worriedly watched as he walks up the stairs. "Son, we're still eating dinner." Victor told Billy.

"What he needs is a sidekick!" Freddy called out to Billy.

Devyn looks at him with offense. "Hey, he does have a sidekick!"

Billy glares at Freddy. "Name one cool sidekick besides the one this superhero already has!"

Devyn had to admit she was relieved he thought she was cool because otherwise she would've punched him if he didn't say something like that. She glances at the others with an awkward smile as Billy storms up the stairs. She stands up. "May I be excused so I can go talk with him?"

"Yes, you're excused." Rosa nods and smiles slightly. "Maybe you can try to calm him down."

Devyn smiles a bit and leaves the dining room. She walks to Billy's and Freddy's shared room, knocking on the door that was closed. "Go away, Freddy!" Billy called out.

"It's not Freddy." Devyn tells him. "Can I come in?"

There's a moment of silence and for a second Devyn thinks he's not going to open the door, but then the door opens and Billy looks at her with a bit of annoyance. "What do you want?"

"I just wanna talk." Devyn replied.

"Fine." Billy stepped to the side, letting her inside the room.

"Look, I know you're upset with Freddy, I am too," Devyn admits. "But that doesn't mean you have to be a jerk to him."

Billy crosses his arms. "If you came up here to tell me I'm a jerk then you can just leave."

"No, I came up to tell you to give Freddy a break." Devyn replies. She sighs. "I don't think he's being clingy. He never had friends who can be a hero and sidekick and it's so cool! That's why he wants to be involved all the time. And he basically said it himself, he just wants to spend time with us, but you're pushing him away." She frowns. "Just like what you're doing to me now."

"Now you're defending him?" Billy stared at her with disbelief.

"I am." Devyn nodded.

"He went against his own rule!" Billy exclaims in frustration. "He's taking complete advantage of us just so he can look cool in front of everyone and you're okay with that?"

"I'm not okay with it," Devyn sighs. "But I'll do it if it means protecting him from bullies."

Billy scoffs, shaking his head and heads to the latter of the bunk bed to climb to the top bunk. "Alright, go protect your boyfriend, but I'm not going."

Devyn furrows her eyebrows, staring at him with confusion. "Just because I've been getting close with Freddy lately you think he's my boyfriend? What is going on with you?"

Billy sighs heavily, his shoulders drooping in defeat. He turns to face her and admits, "I'm jealous, okay?" Devyn looks at him with shock, not expecting to get that answer. "I'm jealous because I like you so much more than words can explain and seeing you so close with another guy just makes me jealous." Billy confesses, running a hand through his hair as a light shade of blush appears on his face. "I-I mean, I felt these feelings for you for a long time now, but I pushed them to the back of my mind, trying to forget about them 'cause I can't think of you that way."

Devyn slowly walks over to him, staring at him with a shy smile as she blushes. Billy smiles shyly at her, rubbing the back of his neck. "You're my best friend who probably doesn't feel the same way and I don't want to lose you because of some feelings I have." He continues to ramble nervously. "But when you became close with Freddy, those feelings grew stronger and I just can't hide it anymore-"

Devyn interrupts his rambling with a kiss. Billy's eyes widen and he stands there, frozen in shock. He couldn't believe it. His best friend was standing in front of him, her hands on his face and she was kissing him. That must mean she felt the same way, right? Just as he got out of his state of shock, Devyn was pulling away. After not getting a response from Billy for a few seconds, Devyn feared she was too bold and just ruined everything. Billy was quick to wrap her waist to pull her closer, using his other hand to cup the right side of her face and he closed his eyes as he kissed her back.

Devyn was relieved when he kissed her back. She was beginning to think kissing him was a mistake, but now she knows it's not. "Devi, you have no idea how long I've been wanting to do that." Billy breathed out after they both pulled away.

Devyn smiles teasingly at him. "I assume since we met Freddy?"

Billy rolls his eyes even though there was a smile on his lips. "Very funny." He sarcastically said.

Devyn smiles softly, ignoring the blush appearing in her face. "So, Billy, would you like to be my boyfriend?"

A soft smile made its way to Billy's lips as he looks at her with an amused glint in his eyes. "I thought the guy was supposed to ask the girl out."

"The guy can." Devyn nods. She shrugs. "I decided I would just ask you out 'cause you're taking to long to ask me." Billy chuckles lightly and looks at her fondly. She looks at him with a hopeful expression. "So...What's the answer?"

Instead of saying anything, Billy kisses her. She kisses back, her face a bright red. Billy was blushing as well, but he was grinning at her when they both pulled away. "Does that answer your question?"

"I-I don't know." Devyn stutters, flustered by everything that was happening. "You might wanna try that again."

"Yeah?" Billy raises his eyebrows, smiling teasingly at her which caused her to blush more and look down with a shy smile. "I think that can be arranged." And so he kissed her again. Just like the other kisses this felt right. It didn't feel weird or wrong. It felt right.

"I gotta admit, you feel more like home than any place we've ever been." Devyn admitted in a shy tone after she and Billy pulled away from the kiss.

Billy smiles softly, gently rubbing her cheek and he got butterflies in his stomach as she leaned into his touch. "The same goes to you."

Devyn returns the soft smile, her heart fluttering when he kissed her forehead. Then she was the question that she had been thinking. "So should we be public about this or keep it secret?"

"I'm okay with either way," Billy reassures her. He grimaces. "But I do feel like the others might freak out."

"Alright," Devyn grins. "Secret relationship it is then." Her grin was replaced with a worried look. "But it'll be tough."

"We can do it." Billy nods, smiling reassuringly at her. He pulls her in for a hug, resting his chin on top of her head while she snuggled into his chest. "Like you said, it'll be tough, but it's worth it since it means I get to be you."

A/N devyn & billy are finally together!! yay!!!
