Chapter 46
7:30 pm
"Anything yet old fella?" Rooster asked, padding over to Pops. Looking through the binoculars that Myron and three other hamsters were holding up for him, the old basset hound woofed, "Nothing yet."
"Do you think they're okay?" Norman piped up. The guinea pig was scanning the skies. Sweetpea the parakeet was next to him. Approaching the two smaller animals, Rooster looked down at the rodent and reassured him, "They'll be fine little mouse. They're adults, they know how to look after themselves."
"Nah, we're all kids at heart," Leonard chimed in over where he was adjusting his stereo. Rooster rolled his eyes in annoyance. That poodle was getting on his nerves with how he always played... whatever it was he called music. To the Welsh sheepdog who was used to the serene quiet of the country, the poodle's music was just loud noise that made his ears bleed.
"Hey... wait a minute. Hey! I see something!" Pops barked. Everyone looked over at the elder. His tail wagging, the old dog described in detail, "Looks like Fat Dog. I can't really tell but it is brown and he's brown. Wow, it looks like he's getting bigger! Or is that him getting closer?"
"Move ya old timer!" Rooster shouted. Without a moment's hesitation, the Welsh sheepdog grabbed Pops by the collar and yanked him out of the way. And in just the nick of time too as Duke came crashing through the table that was set out. When the dust settled, one could see the Newfoundland mix happily gobbling down the cake that was meant for the contestants. His face covered in pink frosting, Duke mumbled with food in his mouth, "Hey guys... what's up?"
"Congratulations Duke! You won Home Before Dinner!" Norman squeaked, throwing frosting into the air like confetti. Sweetpea flew around the big dog's head in circles. Too busy munching on food to realize his accomplishment, Duke grabbed a doughnut off of Rooster's muzzle and ate it. Wiping the icing off his nose, Rooster grumbled, "What has become of my life?"
