ghosts of christmas past
soak sun round red watermelon
i remember how you coveted it
from that round red rowdy family
laughing loudly into the sun
gazebo sidestepped shade-
no thought to scary skin cancer
yet
.
we three divine sit content
but unholy within each other
on sand on towel on chair
happiness happens
so little do we know
yet
.
we go in the water
you both hold a hand
i love water but i'm scared
i trust you with my life then
but who can you trust for yours
i'm not sure christ was born right
yet
let alone dead already
i get out of the water
.
i do what i love most absorb sun
the two of you are speckles
i know so well apart from afar
silver water shimmers in salty molten sun
the board seems to dangle in midair
but i know it is tied to your wrist now
the wrist of the hand
that held my hand
.
shadows span closed lids i sit up
hot and brown and whole as ovened bread
cold sea runs down your faces
in delicious little streams
lashes stick in drops of salt
blue lips even bluer now
sand clings to your cool feet
like needy dunes
when we get back home
you will vacuum the car
.
sandwiches burst lettuce chicken
mayo smiles-we smile back and bite
(for years we talk of this meal)-
that we would starve for years to come
we didn't know
yet
.
soak sun round red watermelon
i remember how you coveted it
from that round red rowdy family
laughing loudly into the sun
gazebo sidestepped shade-
no thought to the scary cancer
yet
