Chapter Seven - You're Not a Complete Idiot

Phase One reads nothing like she expects it to.

In Phase One, a subject is randomly chosen based on very specific criteria to come reside in The Sanctuary on Omega Six. The criteria is as follows:

1. They must be a female humanoid.

2. Their reproductive organs must be intact and fully functioning.

3. They must be regarded highly among their peers.

4. They must be intelligent.

Any other qualities or abilities that a subject possesses are irrelevant to the program.

Each subject is evacuated from their home planet by way of teleportation during a sleep state. They are kept in this state during their Atlas implantation surgery and until they are placed in their cryogenic chamber aboard my ship, captained by my crew and carrying its own medical team.

During the trip to Omega Six, Atlas runs memory diagnostics and removes all traces of identity. Atlas also transmits data needed to a team on Omega Six who use the data to set up the subjects living quarters.

If the subject survives cryogenic hibernation, she is given a full treatment of regeneration and healing upon Arrival at The Sanctuary, as well as a wash and a trim to any keratin extremities.

She is then placed in her own bed, in her own apartment, designed specifically for her race and planet, where she is woken, thus ending the first Phase.

The chapter ends with a list of all the women from all the different worlds who have been in Phase One. Minn doesn't read them all, but she skims through the exotic names, all born here or there, no where she's heard of. She follows the list down to the last name.

3648. Minn - Earth

She studies her first name. It doesn't look familiar, but she knows Earth. She's Earthborn. She can see the globe in her head and if she closes her eyes, she can see a vast ocean and herself standing in the white sparkling sands of a beach in bare feet.

She opens her eyes and she's here instead. Are all three thousand still here? And why only collect woman and bring them all the way here? Invest in all this stuff? She admits to herself that the mention of her reproductive organs leaves her ill at ease. What do you want with our wombs, you freak? Atlas is still silent, all she can do is continue reading, so she turns the page.

In Phase Two, subjects become aware of  the Altas' presence. Phase Two can result in many variations depending on the subjects internal belief system. More advanced species have a higher success rate of moving through the stages of Phase Two in less than a day.

Stages of Phase Two:

Confusion is the the first stage, as the subject wakes. Besides communication skills, memories are kept completely blocked to soften any resistance to my implants presence. However,  familiar surroundings do increase the speed of the process overall.

Shock may be the next stage, especially for newer humanoids, but for others, they simply aren't capable. However, those inflicted enter shock as they come to terms with Atlas' presence in the brain and voice in the mind. A medical team resides in their own bay, on the main floor of The Sanctuary. The team is made up of Hyperions, and they are on call to deal with any medical emergency that cannot be corrected by synthetic means.

Denial is the first stage where memories are re-introduced. The subjects are usually calm, focused and simply dealing with what is in front of them. Their personality begins to surface, their likes and dislikes, what they've learned from media and sources outside of their family and friends.

Anger is often reached when the subject learns new information about The Sanctuary's program that does not compute with their internal beliefs. This stage may result in death, although subjects are regenerated if possible. If a subject commits a violent act towards themselves or another citizen, they will be placed in solitary confinement.

Curiosity stems from the anger of new conflicting information. The subject wishes to learn more, but the more they discover, the more conflict arises from their psyche. Unfortunately, this creates a loop of staged events, whereupon learning new information, the subject reverts back to denial or anger. Thus, making this a process that can last hours or days. Having all the information presented at once in text form has proven to increase the rate at which the process is complete.

Acceptance is the final stage. Once a subject accepts every aspect of the rules of their stay in The Sanctuary, including the physical and possibly emotional ramifications of Phase Three, they move into Phase Three.

At the end of the chapter, pages and pages of all the names of all the women who have ever been in Phase Two are listed. There at the end of the list sits her name.

2467. Minn - Earth

Her hands shake as she turns the page. Her stomach turns, this is too much. It all makes sense to her but then again, it doesn't. The biggest question still hasn't been answered. Why is she here? She feels she's about to find out as she begins to read again.

In Phase Three, subjects will give consent to insemination. Once given, the subject is fertilized and expected to carry their offspring to full term. Once delivered, the offspring will be taken to a different facility on a different planet where it will be nurtured and raised. Thus begins the insemination process again.

A maximum of 16 weeks can be taken between fertilizations. As long as the subject agrees to continue in Phase Three, the longer they will reside in The Sanctuary.

Overwhelmed by the weight of the revelation, Minn gazes at the list of names denoting those who have entered Phase Three. The names appear slightly altered, lengthened, and richer. Her own name is absent from the bottom of the list. Frustration and disbelief wash over her, prompting her to slam the book shut. "This is bullshit," she mutters, hoping Atlas can hear her. "This doesn't tell me anything except what a huge dick you are!" She hurls the book onto the coffee table, her anger echoing in the silent room.

Determined to seek answers and liberation, Minn contemplates rallying the other women, uniting them against their captors. She envisions a mutiny, a rebellion that could lead to their collective freedom. But weariness settles upon her like an unyielding weight, her energy waning. The plushness of the couch entices her to surrender to its comfort. "Just a moment's rest," she tells herself, sinking into the cushions. "I'll decide what to do when I wake up." And with that, the exhaustion claims her, and she drifts into an uneasy slumber.
