Chapter Four - Why Are You Pressing the 'x' Button?

Minn Earthborn, I strongly advise against this decision at this juncture.

But Minn doesn't care what Atlas says. She's already slammed the door behind her, determined to find her way out of this god-forsaken place. Instantly she can tell it's an unusual apartment complex. Not even condos have hallways this spacious, let alone the rounded walls or floating balls of light for lanterns.

It only stops her for a few breathes. She's on a mission. She continues down the hallway looking for anything that can be interpreted as an exit. There are doors scattered here and there, all different shapes and styles, some labeled with numbers, some with letters and symbols that make no sense. Finally ahead of her, she sees a white light next to a large grey door. When close enough she realizes it looks like a button marked with an x. She pushes it and the light turns from white to red.

Before the inevitable happens, and we meet one of our citizens, please try to remain calm. They've all been in the same position we find ourselves in now.

"Kidnapped, drugged, implanted and fucked? Did I leave anything out?" Minn's voice surprises her with its steadiness. "Trying to buy me off with all that shit back there. In this huge fucking place with no one around, no security, but medical personal is on call? From where? My own brain?"

Security is not needed. Medical is here for our own safety and in a sense yes, we did call them from our brain. What's yours is mine.

"Jesus, fuck you. Seriously, who the fuck do you people think you are doing this to people?"

No person has done anything to you, Minn Earthborn.

DING.

The grey doors open. A female with green skin looks up from fiddling with her skirt, her eyes widen when she takes in Minn's glare. Minn isn't sure what to do, the woman doesn't look dangerous, though she's planted her feet firmly, ready for any action.

"Going down?" The green girl asks, taking a step over and making room for Minn in the elevator.

"Uh, yeah, to the Main Floor?"

"Sure, come on in."

Minn steps in the elevator and leans on the opposite side of the green girl.

Her name is Mivka, she is from planet Lyra in the Hypherion Galaxy.

"Shut up," Minn says bluntly.

"Excuse me?" Mivka responds, although her mouth moves in an awkward shape, not matching the words Minn hears.

"Sorry, not talking to you."

"Oh, Atlas then," Mivka starts to explain, "she's full of useless knowledge, isn't she?"

"She?"

I am not female, I can assure you.

"Most of us think of her as a her, it's the voice I guess." Again, her mouth moves but the words don't match. She must notice Minn looking at her lips because she proceeds. "It's Atlas, she's translating what I'm saying into your language, she's really rather good."

"So you can hear her too?" Minn asks.

"Of course," she pauses at Minn's blank expression. "She doesn't speak to me as much now, not since, well, you'll find out soon enough."

"Since what?"

DING.

The elevator doors open, Mivka darts out and hurries down the hall. "Good luck, Minn. I'm sure I'll see you again soon!"

"Wait!" Minn calls after her, "where are you going?"

"For a swim, you want to join me?"

As tempting as it sounds, she's still focused on finding the exit. "No thanks. How do I get out of here?"

"You can't. No one leaves. You can go outside if you want," she points to the two large wooden doors at the other end of a massive atrium, "but there's nothing really special out there. See for yourself."

"Ok. Thanks, I will." Minn tells her but she's already turned and walked away. "Weird." She says under her breath.

Her body's chemical compound differs slightly from yours, making her skin appear green.

"I didn't ask you." Minn shakes her head, wondering if she'll ever get rid of the pestering voice. "What did that girl say? How did she get you to shut up?"

She was referring to Phase Three. Mikva reached Phase Three several years ago. Once we reach it, it is less likely you will need my full support. I am merely here to guide you.

"Guide me? To what?"

To Phase Three.

"God, for some smart robot you really are quite useless." Minn marches over to the large wooden doors and tries to push them open. They don't budge.

I must open them for you, Minn Earthborn. You were saying?

Frustrated, Minn takes a step back, realizing she has no choice but to rely on Atlas for now. "Fine, just open the damn doors. Let's get this over with."
