Chapter 5
I was running down the halls. I had to find her. I should not have let her have gone by me like that. I should have followed her the first time. Luckily, I did not have to run very far. I found the room I was looking for.
"Sophia." I whispered as I knocked on the door.
"One moment." I heard her voice ring out.
In a few moments the door was opened by a girl in a hospital gown with an IV, that was connected to a moveable telescopic IV pole, up her arm and a nasal catheter up her nose. Her hair was up in a bun and she begun to look up, she stopped before her eyes could reach mine.
"What are you doing here...?" Her voice got quiet.
"The better question," I let myself in. "Is what are you doing here?"
Silence filled the room. Sophia closed the door and walked to her bed. She sat and got comfortable. However, she refused to reply or look at me. I could not bare it. I saw the sadness and fear in her eyes, but this time I saw something else too. It was something I had never seen from her before. Tears.
"I'm sorry." She broke the silence. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
I quickly realized why she was starting to cry. This must have been so overwhelming for her. First, she is in the hospital. Second, something is going on, that I still do not know about. And third, I came in here and asked, in one of the angriest tones I have ever used on her, what she was doing here.
"Soph..." I walked towards her, uncrossing my arms and pulling her towards me. "I'm sorry, love."
"Why are you sorry?" She asked with a sniffle.
"Because I shouldn't have just barged in the way I did." I started to caress her left hand which was in my right one. "Tell me what's going on Sophia."
"I-I..." She stared at me, her eyes watering more and more, the tears spilling onto her cheeks.
I wiped away her tears with my left hand, carefully stroking her cheeks with my thumb. "You can tell me anything. You know that."
We sat in silence. Not an awkward one, more like a comfortable one. I continued to caress her hand until she calmed down.
"I'm... I'm getting a surgery tonight." She slowly said once she caught her breath.
"Because...?" I said softly.
"You know what a tumor is right?" She looked away.
"I do..." I watched her carefully. "Where is it?"
She let go of my hand and slowly her hand moved. It rose and as it did, it seemed like time slowed. Was she going to point at her stomach? Nope. Her arm? Nope. Her arm continued to raise and soon, she was pointing at her head. I let out a breath. Not a relieved one.
"How bad is it?" I asked.
"I might die, Graham." Her voice got shaky. "I might die!" She shouted.
She quickly stood up and walked forward, not daring to face me. From what I saw, she was shaking and wiping away her rushing tears. She could not bare to look at me anymore. That scared me. I had never seen her like this. It broke my heart to see her in such pain.
"I have to get this surgery or else I could die!" She said, moving forward to the wall and leaning her arm against it, resting her head on it as well. "But you know what else? I could die getting this surgery!" I heard her breath getting faster. "Graham, I don't want to die! I don't want to get the surgery!" She started to gently hit her head on her arm.
I gave her a moment. I did not say a word, knowing that she wanted her space and I would just have to sit and wait for her to say something. Hearing her sobs, I wanted to go to her and embrace her, but I could not.
Finally, she spoke up. "Graham..."
"Yeah, Soph?" I replied quietly.
"I'm scared." She stated.
I got up and put my arm around her waist, the other on her arm. Pulling her away from the wall, I turned her to face me. Her eyes were flowing with tears, her cheeks were wet from her tears. Sophia's hair had gotten messy and was almost undone. I undid it for her completely.
"Sophia." I stroked her hair. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I..." She choked on her tears. "I couldn't bring myself to it."
Her tears ran faster and before I knew it, her arms were wrapped around mine and mine around her. Within seconds, we were both on the ground, me holding her as she cried into my shirt.
"When is it?" I asked silently.
She looked at the clock and stared at me, wiping her tears away. She stared at my lips and then at my eyes. Her hands cupped my cheeks and she pulled me in. Surprised at first, my eyes stayed open, but I quickly fell for it and let my eyes shut and returned the kiss. It did not last long. She pulled away and sadly stared at my eyes.
"Right now." She got up as the door opened with a nurse came in, taking her away.
