Chapter 4
"Hey? You in there?" A hand waved before my face.
"Huh?" I shook my head. "Yeah I'm here."
I watched as Arianna raised a brow. Before she could ask a question, I got her back to eating her food. I was lost in my own world. I could not believe my eyes. It could not have been real, I must have been imagining things, right? It could not have been Sophia in that wheelchair. I refuse to believe it. On the contrary, it could have been. How would I know if it was her or not?
"There you go again!" Arianna lightly hit my head. "What's going on Graham?!"
"Nothing." I said without thinking about my tone.
"You're lying." She stated. "Tell me now."
"No." I stared at my sister.
"Now."
"No."
"Now."
"No."
"Now or else I will tell Sophia that you use-"
"Okay, okay!" I put my hands up in surrender.
"It's just that..." I looked away before he could finish.
"Graham?" I heard her put her utensils down and she put a hand on my shoulder. "What's wrong. Seriously."
"I thought... I thought I saw Sophia." I sighed.
There was a long pause. I heard her mutter something under breath before she continued to ask me questions. Instead of answering, I asked her what she just said.
"It was nothing. Now tell me, where did you see her?" She brushed my question aside.
"Tell me first."
"I have nothing to tell." Arianna insisted.
"Then I won't say a word." I said.
We sat in silence, which left me to my thoughts. Wait... she said "where did you see her." not "where do you think you saw her." Could that mean... I shook my head. My mind must be messing with me. But could that have been what she had muttered earlier? I stared at her as she ate her food in silence. She knew I could not stand the silence and would go to her saying everything. That is one of the things I hated about her. She knew my weaknesses.
"Arianna?" I turned to her.
"What?" She said, still in the process of eating.
"Is there something going on with Sophia that I don't know about?" I asked, I choked on the last few words.
"Why would you think that?" She continued to eat, not making eye contact with me.
"Because of you." I stated.
She coughed a few times. "Why me?"
"I know when you lie and such too." I said. "You won't make eye contact with me, you're asking questions back to me. And you just seem to know something I don't know."
She may know my weaknesses, but I knew hers too. She could not escape my statements anymore. I stared at her, waiting for an answer. She put her utensils down and stared at me. No, she did not stare. She glared at me.
"If something was going on, it wouldn't be my place to tell." She breathed in. "Ask her yourself if you're so curious."
Before I could pull out my phone to text Sophia, Stacy, the girl from behind the desk called us. She lead us down a hall and towards the fifth room on the right side of the hallway. On the door, there was a paper in a plastic box type thing. It said "Marissa Smith." That was my mom's name. I stared at the door before opening and going in.
"Mom!" Arianna ran past me and went to her side.
She was not awake, but she was alive at least. Her chest rose and fell slowly, her breath ragged and shallow. There were breathing tubes up her nose and IVs along her arms. I could not go up to her. I have seen this so many times and yet, I can never go up to her. I just could not get used to it. Arianna on the other hand, had no problem going up to her because she just wanted to be with our mom. Watching silently, I looked to Stacy who was still in the room.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Work and stress caused her to hyperventilate and well, I think you know how the story goes from there." She sighed. "Poor thing..."
I nodded in a response. Instead of thinking more of what could have happened to my mother, I looked to Stacy and she looked at me.
"Yes...?" She said, getting a sense that I had a question to ask.
"Could you by any chance..." I paused. "Look at your systems and tell me if there is a specific person in this hospital?"
"I'm sorry, that's against the policies. We can't disclose information unless you're related-"
I cut her off. "I'm looking for my girlfriend."
"O-oh okay." She nodded and led me out to the front desk. "Name?"
"Sophia. Sophia Lee." I stated. "Is she in this hospital right now?"
She looked at me with pity in her eyes. "Yes."
