Chapter 4

Clay didn't know how long it had been. All he knew was that he must have dozed off, because he woke up in the hospital waiting room, Hannah's parents staring down at him with small smiles. "Hey, Clay. Hannah was asking to see you." Mr. Baker spoke, getting right to the point, as Mrs. Baker nodded in agreement. "Yeah. She's really lucky to have such a wonderful guy like you in her life. We are too, because of you, Hannah is alive right now." Mrs. Baker said with a smile as Clay stood up from his chair. "And I'm glad for that, because I can't see myself living a life without her in it." Clay confessed with a smile. "And for what it's worth, I can tell she really can't see herself living a life without you too." Mr. Baker said as he and his wife sat down. "Go ahead and see her. I can call your parents and tell them what's going on, since it's getting pretty late." Mrs. Baker offered as she noticed the time. "Yeah, that would be great. Thanks!" Clay said as he took notice of the time. As Mrs. Baker pulled out her phone to make the call, Clay smiled as he headed for Hannah's hospital room.

"Hey, Helmet." Hannah greeted softly as she saw him slowly enter the small, white room. "Hey, Baker. How are you feeling?" Clay asked as he pulled a chair over and sat down beside the small hospital bed. Hannah sighed and stared at the ceiling. "Honestly, I'm not sure." She said truthfully. Not knowing having what to say, Clay simply reached up and gently grabbed Hannah's hand. "Hey, it'll be ok." He reassured, though he wasn't sure who he was trying to reassure. Hannah turned towards him. "How can you be so sure it will be?" She asked. "Honestly, I'm not. But it helps to think that it will, rather than have negitive thoughts, I guess." Clay said with a small shrug. "So, what happened, exactly?" Hannah asked, changing the subject. "You don't remember?" Clay asked curiously. "Well, I remember a little bit, but most of it is foggy." Hannah explained. Clay nodded in understanding before proceeding to explain everything that had taken place, from him arriving at her house, to when they got to the hospital. "Why would you do that?" Hannah asked after Clay had gotten finished with his story. "Do what?" Clay asked confused. "Waist your time with saving me like that." Hannah said, not making eye contact. "Why would I not?" Clay responded with another question, gaining the girl's attention. "Look, I may be clueless sometimes, but I know you well enough to know when something's bothering you. That night at Jessica's party, I knew something was up then too. But I didn't want to make you upset with me or anything. The point is, I care. You may think that you're alone in this world and have no one, but that's simply not true." Clay explained. "You have me." He said. "And I will always be there for you. No matter what. I saved you, because I didn't want to loose a special girl like you. You mean the world to me. I really can't see myself living a life without you in it. I guess what I'm saying is...I love you, Hannah Baker." Clay said, not looking away from the girl for a second. He noticed the tears start to cloud her eyes as he finished his statement. Instead of talking, Clay did the one thing he knew would comfort her. He got up from his chair, dropped her hand from his, and simply wrapped his arms around her in a gentle, warm, comforting hug. As he felt her lean into him, returning the hug, he felt his shirt start to get a little wet. "It's ok now. It'll all ok." He whispered comfortingly as he let her cry into his shoulder.
