Chapter 17

After a few weeks, Clay felt a bit better after he had started taking medication again to help with the nightmares that kept popping up - some of the nightmares happening every other night. He smiled as he got out of bed, the night free of any bad dreams about the day he found Hannah or everyone blaming the horrible event on him. The boy felt unexplainably happy as he took a warm shower and got dressed for the day before heading downstairs to the kitchen for some breakfast before leaving to head to school.

After finishing breakfast and taking the normal morning dose of two of his medication pills, Clay packed his homework neatly into his backpack, along with the now-empty, orange medication bottle - to get refilled later - before slinging his bag over his shoulder and leaving for school.

As Clay walked down his driveway, he saw a figure walking towards him. As the figure got closer, Clay smiled to himself, realizing that it was none other than Hannah Baker. "Hey, Clay." Hannah greeted with a warm smile as she joined the boy, the two now walking side-by-side as they headed to Liberty High together. "Hey, Hannah." Clay greeted back as he placed his hands into his hoodie pockets. Smiling, Hannah linked her arm through Clay's as they continued talking and walking together. "How are you doing, Helmet?" Hannah questioned, Clay knowing very well that the question was meant for a more detailed answer. "Ok, I guess. I'm still taking the medication pills. But they have helped lessen my nightmares, visions, panic attacks, and the more recent voice in my head." He explained with a small shrug of his shoulders. "That's good." Hannah said with a small smile, knowing that the boy didn't like taking his meds - the only thing keeping him on the medication was the fact that it helped keep his nightmares and everything else at bay. "Yeah, I guess it is." Clay said as the two entered the school together, briefly going their seperate ways as they went to their lockers.

As the day slowly went by, Clay and Hannah met up every chance they got, whether it be for a few seconds as they passed in the halls, or sitting alone together during their lunch period. As the final bell rang, signaling  the end of the school day, Clay left his class and headed straight for his locker. As he gathered his things from his locker and placed them into his backpack, he saw Hannah at her locker out of the corner of his eye. When he saw her look in his direction, he met her gaze and smiled warmly at her before closing his locker, zipping up his backpack, and walking over to her as he swung his bag over his shoulder, clasping the two straps tightly in front of his chest. "Hey, Hannah." He greeted as he stopped beside her, leaning against the locker next to hers. "Got any plans after school?" Clay asked after getting a "hey, Helmet" and a smile in response. Once Hannah had all her things, she closed her locker and the two started walking towards the school exit together. "Besides my parents asking me to help them out at the store later, I don't think I do." She said with a small smile. "How about you and I go down to Monet's and work on some of our homework together? Then, if you want, I could either walk you home or to the store?" Clay suggested. "I might just have to take you up on that offer." Hannah said with a bright smile as she gently grabbed Clay's hand in hers and lead the way to the small, familiar coffee shop.

Later on, after Hannah and Clay had finished most of their homework, Clay walked Hannah down to the pharmacy her family owned, just like he had offered earlier. "Thanks for walking me here, Helmet." Hannah thanked him as the two walked into the small store. "It's really not a problem. I was actually needing to come down here anyway." Clay said, removing his bag from his shoulder to retrieve the empty orange medication bottle and information needed to get it refilled. Hannah watched as her friend headed towards the counter where her dad was, politely greeting the older man as he placed the empty pill bottle and information onto the flat counter top. After he looked over the paper, Hannah's dad took the pill bottle and went to the back to get it refilled. Hannah sighed sadly as she watched the boy who had saved her life, wishing that he didn't have to suffer and go through everything that he has already been through.

Hearing Clay's voice, soon followed by footsteps, brought Hannah out of her thoughts as she watched the boy walk back over in her direction. Clay smiled at Hannah and briefly chatted with her before saying goodbye and making his way towards the door to head home. "Clay?" Hannah's mother asked, making the boy turn back around just as he was walking through the door. "Thanks for everything you've done for us." She said as she walked over to him, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder before pulling him into a small, gratefull hug. "Really, it's no trouble." Clay responded after he was released from the unexpected hug from the older woman. "Andy and I just want you to know that if there's ever anything you need, don't hesitate to come to us." She said, bringing a smile to Clay's face. "Thanks, Mrs. Baker. That really means a lot. I'll definitely keep it in mind." He said, the two sharing one more goodbye before Clay left to head back to his house.
