Chapter 10
After Clay had told Hannah about his situation, they had been closer than ever. Each would be there for the other, no matter when or where, whenever they needed it. Hannah couldn't help but feel a little guilty, feeling like she had been the cause for Clay's troubles, but Clay would always tell her that it started earlier on in his childhood so she wasn't to blame.
As the week slowly dragged on, Hannah started to take notice of how Clay seemed to not be able to stay focused in classes or in some of their conversations. When she first noticed, she decided to let it go, not wanting to bombard him with questions. As the week went on though, she noticed how he seemed more out of it. During the one class they shared together, Clay had gotten in trouble with the teacher for falling asleep - something Clay never did in classes. After that insident, Hannah took notice of how tired and drained Clay really looked.
Now sitting at their usual lunch table, Hannah sat alone as she waited for Clay to join her. Watching as everyone got their lunchs and found their seats, she smiled when she spotted Clay amoungst the crowd. "Hey, Helmet." Hannah greeted softly as Clay sat down, not even getting some food first. "Hey, Hannah." Clay greeted, the normal cheery tone in his voice noticably dull. "You're not going to get something to eat?" Hannah asked him, trying to pick up a conversation with him. "No, I'm really not that hungry right now." Clay said truthfully with a sigh. "Are you ok?" Hannah decided to ask the question. "I guess." Clay said with a sigh. Before Hannah could say anything else, Clay continued as he stared blankly at a wall. "My mom's picking me up after lunch. Said something about wanting to go talk to someone again." Clay said, no emotion seeping through his voice. Almost as if he didn't really care. After hearing that, Hannah could tell that Clay didn't want to talk about it anymore, so she settled for moving over to his side of the table and gently taking his hand in hers as she rested her other arm over his shoulders. Clay leaned into the gentle touch, thankful that wasn't asking him anymore about it. "You can come by later, if you'd like though." Clay offered. "Are you sure, Helmet?" Hannah asked as she looked over at him. "Yeah. I feel like I've kinda distanced myself a little bit. And, I want to hang out with you later." Clay said honestly. "Ok. How about after school or after you get done? Which ever comes last?" Hannah suggested. "Sounds like a plan." Clay said as he spotted his mom's car pull up in front of a window. "Looks like I have to go now." He said as Hannah spotted the car too. "Let me know when you want me to come over later." Hannah told him as he stood up to gether his things. "I will. Bye, Hannah." Clay said before gently kissing her cheek and walking out to meet his mom. "Bye, Helmet." Hannah whispered to herself, smiling as she gently put her hand to her cheek where he had kissed her. Hearing the bell ring, Hannah started gathering her stuff and getting up, throwing her trash away before heading to her next class.
After Clay left, Hannah's day seemed to drag on, because she'd always have him to talk to in between classes and he'd always walk her home. Going from one class to another seemed dull without Clay by her side, as did walking home. Sure it was nice out, but Hannah felt lonely, not having Clay to talk to during their walk home.
As Hannah sat in her room, doing her homework, she heard a knock on her door. Turning around, she saw her mom standing there. "Hey, Mom." Hannah greeted as she put her pencil down on her desk. "Hey, Hannah." Her mom greeted back as she walked further into the room. "Clay's not here." Her mom asked, though it came out as a statement. "Yeah. His mom picked him up early from school. Said something about going to talk to someone. I didn't get the full details though." Hannah said. "Has he seemed..." Hannah's mom asked, trailing off. "Different?" Hannah finished. "Yeah, different." Her mom said in response. "Yeah. I've noticed how he seems out of it and not able to focus a lot during school. He also got in trouble earlier when he fell asleep during class, which is something I've never seen him do before." Hannah said. "I hope he's ok. He's a nice boy." Her mom said with a small smile. "He also seems to care about you a lot." She added. "Yeah, he does." Hannah said with a small smile. "I can also tell that you like him too, and that you seem to be a lot happier with him." Her mom said with a smirk. "Yeah. He's the only guy that's really been nice to me. Even with everything going on at school, he believes me instead of the kids that started rumors." Hannah said. "Well, he's definitely a keeper. Your dad really likes him too, you know." Her mom said. "That's great, considering Dad never seems to like the guys I hang out with." Hannah said with a small laugh. Her mom laughed too. "Clay's different though. He's not like every other guy out there." Hannah said. "He's more old fashioned, and I like that about him." She added with a smile, falling into silence. "Well, I just came up here to let you know that your dad and I are headed out for a little bit. If you need anything, there's money on the counter for dinner. Also, both of us are fine with it if you wanted to invite Clay over." Her mom said as she stood up from the edge of the bed where she had been sitting. "Ok. Thanks, Mom. You and Dad have fun on your date." Hannah said as her mom smiled in response and left the room.
After her mom left her room, Hannah decided to text Clay.
Hannah: Hey, Clay. My parents are going out for a while, and they said that you could come over if you wanted.
Not expecting a reply, Hannah set her phone on her desk as she continued on her homework.
10 minutes later, Hannah had finished all her homework and was now in the kitchen. She was deciding what to do for dinner when she heard her phone go off from the counter. Picking it up, she smiled at who it was.
Helmet: Hey, Baker. I actually just got done over here. You still want to hang out?
Hannah: Of course! We can order a pizza and watch movies or something.
Helmet: Sounds good. Maybe I can even give you that ride on my bike I still owe you?
Hannah: Maybe. We'll see, Helmet. Let's start with movies and pizza though, because it gives me an excuse to cuddle with you since I haven't seen you all day.
Helmet: Whatever you say, Baker. Be there in 15.
After seeing his response, Hannah decided to pick out a few movies for the two to watch.
As she set the pile neatly on the table, there was a knock at the door. Making herself look presentable, Hannah walked over and opened the door, coming face-to-face with none other than Clay Jensen. "Hey, Jensen." Hannah greeted with a smile. "Hey yourself, Baker." Clay greeted back, returning the smile. "Come on in." She said, stepping aside to let him in. "You go pick the first movie and I'll order us a pizza." Hannah said. "Sounds good." Clay said as he walked over to where the stack of movies was. "Cheese or pepparoni?" Hannah asked as she dialed the number into her phone. "You pick. I'm good with either." Clay responded as he looked through the movies.
Later on, Mr. and Mrs. Baker entered the house, seeing the only light being from the tv. Glancing at each other, Mrs. Baker walked over, ready to turn it off when she noticed two figures on the couch. She smiled as she realised that they had been watching movies together and must've fallen asleep. Mrs. Baker motioned for her husband to be quiet, not wanting to disturb the two as she turned the tv off and the two quietly headed back to their room.
Before going to bed, Mrs. Baker had called Clay's mom, letting her know that he had just fallen asleep at their house, and that it was perfectly fine for him to stay there for the night. Mrs. Jensen had agreed to letting her son stay there as well, because she was aware that he hadn't been getting enough sleep lately, and she didn't want to have him woken up.
Sorry for the late update, but here's another long-ish chapter to make up for it! Hope you guys liked it!
