The sun was peeking out behind the clouds, spraying sunlight along the road ahead of them as Jeno and Jaemin walked up the street. Jeno was taking him to the park at the top of the hill, about a fifteen minute walk from Jaemin's house.
The two of them along with Jungwoo and Doyoung always used to play there when they were younger and Jeno had lots of happy memories associated with the park. Unfortunately, as the four of them had gotten older, they had grown out of playing and no longer spent time up at the park. Jeno kind of missed those days, but that was part of growing up he guessed.
As they reached the top of the hill Jeno watched Jaemin as he recognized where they were. His eyes lit up and a small smile formed on his pink lips.
“Remember this place?” Jeno asked.
Jaemin looked over at him and his smile grew. “Yeah, of course I do. We used to come here all the time when we were kids.” He replied.
Jeno followed his gaze back towards the park. It was a small rectangular area rimmed with tall trees. In the center stood the playground. There was a set swings and a climbing area with a slide attached. It was painted in blues, yellows and reds; the colors still as bright as Jeno remembered them. To the right of the playground, along the tree line were covered seating areas with benches. The one in the middle was covered in long vines that reached the ground and was peppered with purple flowers. This bench was known as the makeout spot, as teenagers were occasionally seen on the bench behind the curtain of vines locked in passionate embraces.
“Come on.” Jeno said, grabbing Jaemin's hand and heading towards the set of swings.
The park was empty so they had the whole area to themselves. They sat down on a swing each and gently swung back and forth. Jeno watched the smile on Jaemin's face grow as he swung.
“I haven't been on a swing in ages!” Jaemin said cheerily.
“Same; I forgot how much fun they were.” Jeno laughed in agreement.
They both laughed and swung higher, enjoying just acting like kids again. Jeno was just glad to see Jaemin worry free and have that beautiful smile on his face again.
As they swung Jeno felt small droplets of water hit his face. He looked up at the sky and noticed thick grey clouds had moved in and there was no sun in sight. Then all of a sudden, heavy rain fell from above.
Jaemin squeaked in surprise as rain pelted down on them. He hopped off the swing and threw his hood up to shield himself.
“Come on Jeno, over there!” He said, waving his hand for him to follow. Then he ran in the direction of the covered benches.
Jeno quickly followed him, wishing he had worn his hoodie as well.
“Well that came out of nowhere.” Jeno sighed.
He shook his head and ruffled his hair free from any water then sat down on the bench. He took hold Jaemin's hand, pulling him gently to sit down next to him.
He looked up out at the rain streaming down steadily over the park and realized they had sat down in the makeout spot. The long, overgrown vines made the seating area cozy and secluded. He could see why teenagers liked to take their partner's here to makeout; it was kind of romantic, particularly with the rain falling outside.
“So you said you wanted me to listen to a song?” Jaemin asked.
Jeno looked at him and suddenly felt nervousness flutter in his stomach. He had told Jaemin how he felt about him last night, but it was different actually confessing to him in person. He had promised himself that he would do it though and right now was the perfect setting.
He smiled and nodded at Jaemin. He pulled his phone out and scrolled through his song list until he located the song he had in mind. Before he pressed play he looked into Jaemin's eyes and squeezed his hand tightly.
“I wanted you to listen to this song because it expresses my feelings for you in a way better than what I can probably explain myself.” Jeno explained.
Jaemin stared back at him and gave him a small nod, his big brown eyes reflecting exactly how Jeno felt on the inside: nervous but ready for what was about to come next.
Jeno swallowed down his nerves and played the song, Always by Wanna one. He placed his phone down on the bench next to him and grabbed Jaemin's other hand for support as the gentle melody began to play.
Jaemin's eyes widened and took on a shiny sheen as he stared back at Jeno while listening to the lyrics. They were lyrics of love and support; of wanting to be with the one you loved the most, forever and always.
Jeno smiled and placed a hand on his cheek, slowly stroking his thumb back and forth. They stayed like this, silently listening to the song. Their eyes locked on each other, entranced by the swirling emotion being laid bare behind their eyes.
As the song was ending Jeno spoke. “Jaemin, not a day goes by that I don't think of you. For the longest time you've been the most important part of my life. I haven't fully expressed my feelings for you until now because I know you're scared about what could happen if people knew. But I'll protect you Jaemin. With my whole heart and soul I promise to protect and look after you. I love you. I love you more than anything in the world.”
Jaemin raised his hand to rest on Jeno's neck. “Jeno, I…” Jaemin began, almost breathless.
“Yes?”
“I, I love you too.”
On hearing those words Jeno was overwhelmed with happiness and he leaned in to kiss Jaemin.
His eyelids fluttered closed and he cupped Jaemin's face in his hands. It felt so perfect, so right to feel Jaemin's lips against his. Jaemin melted into his touch and his lips moved softly and slowly against his.
“I love you Jaemin. I promise, I'm never going to let you go.” Jeno whispered as their lips parted.
Jaemin opened his eyes and broke out into a huge smile. He wrapped his arms around Jeno in a tight hug. Jeno hugged him back, pulling him close so he was sitting on him and Jaemin nuzzled his face into the crook of his neck.
The rain continued to fall outside their small private heaven but Jeno barely noticed it.
The boy that he loved more than life itself had said that he loved him back.
