There was a loud thud as Jungwoo dropped his backpack on the bench and sat down opposite Jaemin and Jeno. It didn't look like his mood had improved at all after having to stay back in P.E to get scolded by Ms Park.
Though P.E had been a mix of emotions for him, Jaemin felt bad for making his team lose the game. Haechan had said that it wasn't his fault - that Lucas was just like a bull on steroids when it came to sports - but he knew it had been. Standing opposite Lucas who had been all imposing and hungry for a win had just freaked him out. He would have preferred to just sit on the side of the court out of everyone's way.
Jeno had chosen a quiet place to sit for their morning break, at a bench under the covered area outside the cafeteria. It was raining again today so nearly everyone else was sitting inside pretending like it wasnt another miserable day.
Jaemin sat close to him, their shoulders touching. It reminded him that he was right there with him, just as he kept reminding him. He let his mind momentarily flick back to before first period when Jeno had kissed him.
Jaemin normally would have stopped him or pushed him away, but something had made him let Jeno do it. It was a warm feeling that had flowed through him, washing away all the worry and anxiety in him, even if it was just for a couple of seconds. He wasn't entirely sure how he felt about it, or if he should even let himself feel that way.
“Well, talk.” Jungwoo spoke.
Jaemin looked up to find him staring back at him with a tired expression. Jaemin swallowed. His mouth was suddenly dry. He glanced at Jeno, who gave him an encouraging smile.
“Um,” Jaemin began. He looked down at his hands resting in his lap. He didn't want to look at Jungwoo as he told him. To see the hatred for him in his eyes.
“Are you going to tell me or not?” Jungwoo said impatiently.
Jeno’s hand came to wrap around Jaemin’s. “Let him speak, Jungwoo.” Jeno said quietly.
Jungwoo would just get angrier if he didn't say anything, so Jaemin took a deep breath and began. “I was there that day when they hurt Doyoung.”
“I knew it. You saw them do it didn't you?” Jungwoo interjected, his voice like venom.
“No, no I didn't. I was hiding in one of the cubicles.” Jaemin could feel himself starting to panic and he gripped Jeno's hand tightly. “I heard them, what they were doing to Doyoung. I wanted to help but I was terrified. You didn't hear them Jungwoo. Doyoung's screams while they, they…” He couldn't continue. All the terror and anxiety of that day came flooding back. He scrunched his eyes shut as he started to hyperventilate. Next to him, Jeno was trying to calm him down.
“Jaemin, it's okay. Take a deep breath in - that's right - and hold it. 1,2,3,4. Slowly breathe out. I'm here, you're going to be fine.” Jeno soothed. Jaemin focused on his instructions and slowly his breathing calmed.
“Are you satisfied now, Jungwoo?” Jeno asked as he rubbed Jaemin’s back. “It wasn't Jaemin's fault. He couldn't do anything, and if he had tried he would probably be in the same position as Doyoung, so please don't blame him.”
Jaemin glanced up at Jungwoo. He was running his fingers through his hair and looking at Jeno. Jaemin couldn't tell what he was thinking but he didn't look as angry as before, just sad and tired.
“Okay fine. I'm sorry Jaemin.” Jungwoo sighed. “But you better explain every single little detail to the detective. Mark and his stupid friends have to pay for what they did.” Anger was creeping back into his voice and Jaemin nodded quickly in reply.
Jungwoo had apologized but he still scared Jaemin. To be honest, he just wanted Jungwoo to leave and storm off like before. It was selfish, Jaemin thought. It was his fault that Jungwoo was like this. His fault. All of it.
Guilt began to tingle in one of his fingers. He hated that feeling. Whenever the hate and sadness grew in him, his finger would start to tingle like pins and needles. He let go of Jeno’s hand and dug his fingernail into the side of his finger, preferring to feel the physical pain instead.
