The bell rang for the end of class and everyone started to pack their things away.
“Those of you who were late to class, can you please stay back. I would like a word with you. You too Jungwoo.” Mr Cho said as students began clearing out of the classroom.
Jeno cast a glance at Jaemin as he stood up from his desk. He was watching Jungwoo, who still had an angry frown on his face.
Lucas nudged past him. He was whispering something in Jaehyun's ear while they walked toward the door. Jaehyun’s eyes widened and he shot a quick glance at Jeno. Jeno frowned. Both Lucas and Jaehyun were up to something. It was bound to be nothing good.
“Come here you four.” Mr Cho said, signaling for them to come to the front of the class. Jaemin switched to stand on the opposite side of Jeno, away from Lucas and Jungwoo. Jeno gave him a small reassuring smile and stood close to him.
“I have already informed the rest of the class earlier, but a detective will be coming in today to speak with all of you regarding the attack on Doyoung.” Mr Cho paused to look at Jungwoo, giving him a sincere smile before continuing. “You will need to be honest in what you tell him as this is a very serious matter. Given that another student was attacked this morning, both the school and the police wish to catch the culprit as soon as possible. So if you have any information, please do share it with the detective.” He drew his gaze over the four students before him and sighed. “The detective will be arriving after morning break. Please do not be late, understood?”
Jeno bowed politely along with the rest of them. “Yes sir.”
“Good. Now I understand you have P.E next.” Mr Cho finished.
Lucas was the first one out the door, bounding happily down the hallway to his favourite subject. Jungwoo followed behind him, with Jeno and Jaemin after. Jeno still wanted to speak with Jungwoo but he hastened his pace and ignored him. At least he had promised to talk to them during break, Jeno thought then turned his attention back to Jaemin.
“Let's have fun during P.E okay.” He said to him flashing a smile. Jaemin nodded but was still fidgeting with his Jersey sleeves and looked a little distant. He was probably worried about having to talk to the detective soon. Jeno just hoped he could be there with him when they interviewed him. He didn't want Jaemin breaking down or being pressured into anything, but he also knew he needed to tell them what he had heard that day in the bathroom.
They walked the rest of the way to the gymnasium, changed into their gym gear and joined the rest of the class who had lined up against the wall. Their gym teacher, Ms Park, came down the line of students handing them one of two different coloured bandanas: red or blue. As she did this she spoke.
“Today you will be putting the volleyball skills you've learned the past couple of classes into practice. I have handed each of you a coloured bandana. Red is on this side. Blue you’re on the other side of the court. I'll let you decide amongst yourselves your positions. The game starts in five minutes.”
Jaemin received a blue bandana, while Jeno received the last red one. Jeno looked disappointedly from his bandana to Jaemin’s blue one. They wouldn't be on the same team. He watched his other classmates disperse onto either side of their allocated court. Both Haechan and Jisung had blue bandanas. Haechan had already proudly tied his around his forehead, causing tufts of his hair to stick up on end. Jeno walked up to them, knowing Jaemin would be following close behind.
“Lucky you, you've got Jaemin on your team. He's really good at volleyball.” Jeno said with a smile. He gave Haechan a meaningful look and Haechan smiled and winked back at him.
“I know! Lucky us.” Haechan replied merrily. He spun around and grabbed hold of Jaemin’s arm, clinging to him and jumping up and down excitedly. “That means our team is definitely going to win. Sorry Jeno but you've got no chance.” He said, poking his tongue out at him.
Jaemin looked a little lost at all the sudden excitement about him. “I'm not any better than anyone else guys.” He said shyly.
“No, I agree with Haechan. We've got a good chance of winning if we put you as our center. You're one of the best in our class at sports.” Jisung replied. He patted Jaemin on the back and a small smile tugged at Jaemin’s lips.
Jeno knew he could count on Haechan and Jisung to lift Jaemin’s spirits. Feeling relieved that Jaemin was focused on something other than the looming meeting with the detective, Jeno ducked under the volleyball net to his team's side of the court. Amongst his red team members stood Jungwoo, Jaehyun and Lucas. It wasn't too much of an unlucky outcome to have to be on the same team as them though. Lucas was in his element, already enthusiastically going through their team's game plan and Jaehyun was eagerly listening. They both seemed totally focused on the game, which suited Jeno fine. As long as they weren't plotting anything to do with Jaemin.
Jungwoo however was another question. He was glowering at Lucas and Jaehyun, like a predator eyeing up his prey. Jeno could almost feel the hatred radiating off him. He couldn't begin to understand how Jungwoo must be feeling, having to spend every day in class with the people who physically hurt his boyfriend. Especially doing such an unspeakable thing to him as well. Jeno was just relieved that Mark wasn't here. From what Jaemin had told him, Mark was the ringleader. The one who did that to Doyoung while the other two held him down.
If he were in Jungwoo's shoes and it was Jaemin who was in Doyoung's place… He didn't want to even think about what he would do to Mark.
Jeno looked back over to the other side of the court and watched as Jaemin showed Haechan some warm up stretches. It was okay. Jaemin was safe and nobody would touch him.
“Hey! What's your problem Jungwoo?” Lucas growled, snapping Jeno’s attention back to his team.
Both Lucas and Jungwoo were staring darkly at each other. The air was thick with tension and suddenly the whole gymnasium went silent.
“Are you done pretending to be everyone's friend?” Jungwoo sneared. He shoved Lucas, who stumbled back slightly.
Anger flickered across Lucas’s face and he grabbed a handful of Jungwoo's t-shirt in his fist. “You better back off Jungwoo.” Lucas warned.
Jeno watched in shocked silence along with his classmates as Lucas leaned close and whispered something in Jungwoo's ear. Jungwoo instantly slapped away his hand and glared back at him. The pure hatred was clear in his eyes. Jeno couldn't even move. No one dared to, even though it looked as though fists were about to fly. Then Ms Park ran in between the two boys, pushing them apart.
“Break it up both of you.” She said, her tone firm and authoritative. “I will not tolerate any aggressive behaviour in my class. Jungwoo, I think you better sit out the first game until you calm down.”
Jungwoo glanced at Ms Park, then returned his glare back onto Lucas. “Fuck you.” He glowered at him.
“Kim Jungwoo! I will speak to you after class about your behaviour.” Ms Park said, raising her voice.
Jungwoo avoided her gaze and stormed over to a bench at the side of the court. He slumped down on it, resting his chin in his hand and stared angrily down at the floor.
“Now, if everyone is ready, we will start the game.” Ms Park said, going to stand to the side of the court near the volleyball net.
Everyone else started to move into their positions on the court. Jeno did the same, relieved that the tense moment was now over. He glanced in Jaemin’s direction. He looked a little anxious but Haechan was with him and seemed to be asking him which volleyball serve looked the most athletic. This earned a small laugh from Jaemin as Haechan enthusiastically practiced his serves in front of him.
“Alright!” Lucas said, throwing a volleyball up in the air and then catching it. “Lets get it!”
