'So, you like dragons?'
'You must talk to Harry, Ron! He needs you right now!' I hissed at the ginger, agreeing with Hermione who was walking next to me. The two of us kept whining about how he had to say something to his best friend, who was now tangled in the strings of the Triwizard Tournament. The poor boy.
'No way!' muttered Ron back. 'Especially not since I... wait, that's none of your business.' Hermione and I exchanged looks and both grabbed one of his not so muscled shoulders to turn him around. 'Just exactly what is none of our business, Ronald?' Hermione asked, almost demanding him with her bossy tone. I chuckled when Ron opened his mouth, but then closed it again and walked further into the forest. 'Oh, come on Ron!' I tried to push him towards it. 'What's going on? What do you know that we don't know?'
'He knows what the first task is.' Ginny's voice came as a miracle, because if her brother had kept his mouth, I'd probably hex him or something. Me and 'Mione turned around, facing the youngest of the red-head family.
'He knows? How?' my bushy-haired friend asked surprised. Ginny shrugged. 'I know it too. It's –' '- none of their business!' yelled Ron as interruptment. 'Don't say it, Ginny! They'll probably tell Harry, and besides, we promised Charlie to shut our mouths!' He paled immediately after that as Hermione and I looked over at each other. 'I'll find out, you try to get more out of them and search for Harry,' I told her and walked away from the group back to the castle, a walking which soon turned into running as fast as I could and as far as possible.
So it was true... what the Weasley twins had said, the other night. A loud roar from the forest sounded through the night, and Fred – or George, don't know which one - was the one to point it was a dragon's roar. Of course... Charlie Weasley worked in Romania, with dragons. Dragons! That was the first task! That would explain everything, also why Ron knew and we didn't. Of course, I didn't hang with those little ones all the time. I was a seventh year student. Yeah, it was actually a long story of how I got pulled into this whole thing...
*Flashback*
'Excuse me.'
I looked up from my book and smiled at the young Gryffindor girl, sitting beside me. She returned it and put a stack of books on the table, including at least seven real thick ones. The top one fell on the table and sent its sound through the whole library. 'Oops,' the girl mumbled, but before she could reach to get it, I'd already gotten it.
To my surprise, the title read: "Dragons, where to find and how to train". 'Interested in dragons?' I asked the girl, but she quickly shook her head. 'Oh, no. Absolutely not. It's just, my friend asked me to get it for me, because he for some reason wanted to read it.'
'So he's interested in dragons?' I checked. To my surprise, she shook again. 'No... well, I don't know. He's not really with animals, and stuff. I have no idea why he wanted to have it... you know, I might put it back. You can only take six books at the time and otherwise I have to change it for "Smartest muggle-born witches and wizards"... I'll just say they didn't have it –'
'I'll take it,' I smiled. The young with frowned. 'Oh... but you don't even know him...' 'For myself, actually,' I admitted and looked at the book again. 'I love dragons. I remember the time when Hagrid had that tiny dragon... ah, how great...' She giggled and tried to fit all of the books into her bag. 'I'm Hermione, by the way. Hermione Granger.' 'I've heard of you! Aren't you Harry Potter's girlfriend?' I exclaimed, to which she – yet again – firmly shook her head. 'Absolutely not! Harry and I are just good friends. Well, I thought we were good friends... but now he's suddenly in this whole Triwizard Tournament thing...'
'I know... My name's Y/n. Y/n L/n.' 'Pleasure to meet you,' Hermione smiled. I gave her a grin back. 'Same to you. So... this friend of yours, I suppose he's Ron Weasley, isn't he?' She sighed, getting me to frown. 'Oh yes, he is. He's such an idiot lately. Won't talk to Harry... won't even look at him...' She stood up and I copied her actions, as we walked out of the library together. 'I've tried many spells on him to get him back to normal, or just to tell me the truth, but... I failed.' At the word failing, her cheeks turned a very light shade of white and it was almost like I saw tears in her eyes. Then she blinked and it was gone.
To break the silence, I shrugged and smiled. 'You know, in the Spellbook for seventh years are a lot of spells about forcing someone to do something. Maybe you want to try that?' 'Splendid!' squealed Hermione, walking with me up to the Gryffindor common room.
*End Flashback*
And yeah, after that she kept coming to me for questions about spells and stuff, and slowly I got pulled into the whole Harry-Triwizard thing. But anyway, I had been running quite some time, now. Where was I?
I gazed around the dark forest, while the last bits of sunshine just reached my skin. Damn, it was getting dark and I was alone and lost in a stupid, huge forest. My legs couldn't carry my weight anymore, so I groaned and sat down on the moss. Soft... so soft...
It must've been around midnight when I finally woke to the sound of a roar. My brains immediately worked on full stand. Roar = dragon = danger = ARGH!
I could feel my legs again as I raced back to where I came from. But apparently, it was the complete opposite, and I only noticed when I stumbled over a large stick. Ugh, the world in front of me tumbled when I stood up... Grumbling, I turned around to kick the stick away, far back into the forest. Well, I would've done that... if it actually was a stick.
I felt extremely excited and extremely terrified at the same time. And if I had learned anything from the books I'd read, I knew I should be just extremely terrified. The stick turned out to be a large, brown tail, filled with sharp spikes. It moved around slowly, and as I followed the little end of it, I understood why.
Its owner was a Hungarian Horntail. And it was awake.
My breath became slightly faster as I slowly stepped backwards, while the Horntail got up from its position and roared again. I shrank in, and before I knew what was happening, the tail smacked me up against a tree. Gasping for air, my arms and legs worked to free myself from the large dragon. I fell down on the ground and started running as fast as I could. Which was, compared to the enormous Horntail above me, not fast enough.
His tail smacked another time, now hitting my legs as I fell onto the ground. A large paw landed beside me and crushed the bushes and trees it landed on. I turned around and knew I had no chance against this beast. My last bit of hope – did I even have that? – went away as a large fire ball came out of its mouth and it blew fire across the forest. 'Aquamenti!' I screamed, getting on my feet as my wand caused a string of water to stop the fire. It didn't help, because another fire ball was coming up.
Just as I had fully given up and I kneeled down behind a tree, accepting my death, when someone repeated my spell and the dragon looked up. So did I, and I couldn't have been happier. This someone landed beside me, a broom in their hand and a large smirk on their face.
'Hey, Y/n! I knew you always were kind of a daredevil, but don't you think facing a grown Horntail is a bit too much?' 'Charlie!' I yelled and almost crushed him with my hug. 'Thank Gosh! Long time no see, aye?'
Yes, I knew the one and only Charlie Weasley. Shocking? No way. He was just a few years older, we'd been to school together. Oh, I surely remember. We were Hagrid's favorite friends; we visited him all the time to look at rare creatures and plants. And we had played Quidditch together, in the Gryffindor team. It was so much fun; well, it would've been more fun if his annoying brothers had stopped saying I fancied him, for a chance. And with his brothers, I mean all of his brothers. I went home with Charlie a few times, meeting the family and stuff, since we were really close friends. Fred and George were the first ones pointing it out, then Bill followed and soon even Percy kept saying that I liked him. But they were wrong. I didn't like Charlie!
I loved him.
Fine, so he was a bit older, who cared? Charlie and I were great friends, and during our friendship I might have been hit by one of Cupid's arrows that made me head over heels for the ginger... Thank Gosh his brothers never told Ron or Ginny about it. It would've been horrible. But wait a second... Things flashed through my brain as puzzle pieces fell together. Fred and George must've known too! That's why they kept staring at me during breakfast... and why they were whispering every time I walked by! Damn those guys for not telling me my best friend had returned.
I was back to earth as the Horntail let out another roar, and Charlie looked at it with a frown. 'Why, that's not looking good. Hope you can still hold your balance on a broom?' I snorted softly, trying to sound offended. 'Of course! For your information, Oliver Wood himself assigned me as the best Chaser this team has had in years, if you hadn't noticed!' 'Stop telling lies, dear Y/n, you know bloody well that was me,' he grinned and stepped on his broom. As I sat right behind him, his voice said: 'You better hold on tight... this won't be a very pleasure ride.'
I gladly did what he said and wrapped my arms around him – was it me or was he actually more muscled than before? – as Charlie set off from the ground, the dragon right behind us. I bit my bottom lip and hoped for the best.
The best was actually a bit better than I'd expected. Charlie indeed was a great flyer, and he managed to get rid of the dragon in less than five minutes. Of course, in those five minutes I had lost my eyebrows and a bit of my hair thanks to Mister Fire Breath, but I didn't care as long as I was on the back of Charlie's broom, which also lasted no longer than five minutes. As he landed, I simply jumped off and watched him doing the same.
'So, what were you doing in the Forbidden Forest?' His forehead actually got a frown. 'Alone?' I shrugged, knowing he couldn't be angry with me. He never stayed angry longer than a minute. That was Charlie. 'Oh, come on Char. We survived, so you don't need to be strict,' I chuckled, and to my relieve he smiled too. 'Yeah. Well, I already figured out that Hogwarts closes its doors around 11 p.m., and since it's almost 1 a.m., we don't have any chance of getting in tonight.'
'Great,' I muttered and wanted to start whining about how it was way too cold to sleep outside, but he pulled me away from the path and only let go of my arm once we were right next to the castle, next to a piece of the giant walls and a few trees. Charlie nodded towards it and then looked back at me. 'We can just sleep here. It seems that there's no other good place, so...'
It was hard, really hard, to hide the smirk that grew on my lips. This. Was. Amazing. This would be the perfect opportunity to be with him again! Just me and him. Yes. That night was a long one, while we didn't really sleep, but just sat next to each other and talked about our continued lives. Charlie's experiences in Romania had interested me, so we kept chatting about that until he decided I should get some sleep. 'Fine... but tomorrow, you're gonna tell me all about this Japanese Wanglong,' I said and he laughed. 'Of course. Nighty night, Y/n.' 'Don't let the Horntail bit...' I muttered and with Charlie's last smirk planted in my mind, I fell asleep against the walls.
Next morning was a surprise; I woke on the couch in the Gryffindor common room. Thank Gosh it was a Saturday, because the clocks told me it was already 8 a.m. I got up immediately, scanning the room, but no one was around. If you let out one person.
'Morning, Sleeping Beauty! Sure you had nice dreams, as you were snoring like the Horntail itself,' Charlie joked, getting me to groan softly and yawn. 'Where is everyone?' I asked as a distraction. 'Downstairs, having breakfast. If you hurry we can have some too, before Fred and George eat everything.' At the thought of the Twins, my heart sank down. Those bastards would probably start all over again...
And I was right. As Charlie and I entered the Great Hall and sat down next to Ginny, with Fred, George and Ron across the table, the mentioned two smirked as they'd never smirked before.
'Well, well, well. Haven't seen you two last night,' George started, gazing from me to Charlie, 'have we, Fred?' 'We certainly have not, George,' said Fred, grinning widely as he saw my hopeless signs to make them stop. 'Yeah, what have you been up to?' asked Ron, totally innocent and looking like he actually wanted to know the answer. 'We escaped from a Hungarian Horntail,' I mumbled, and we all sat a little closer to each other, knowing we couldn't tell anyone else.
'So, you and Charles here have faced the dragon and then slept outside? That's one interesting fact...' chuckled George, after Charlie and I told the story. He switched looks with Fred, who grinned as well, and they both turned back to us. Ron and Ginny were gazing from one to another, with confused looks and a lot of shrugging. They both noticed how their twin brothers were acting strange, stranger than usual. The twins better kept their mouths shut, I said to myself, because otherwise they were going to get into some real trouble... Luckily they did seem to understand my obvious death glare, and the breakfast went by quickly.
After eating, I followed the Weasley's up to the common room to see what they were up to. What I didn't expect, was that they were all packed for at least a few days. 'Why are you packed? You're not leaving this soon, are you?' I asked Charlie, immediately afraid of him leaving again. He chuckled at my despair and turned to get his trunk. 'No, professor Dumbledore gave us permission to head home for today and tomorrow. Because Percy and Bill are coming to Hogwarts as well, to watch the Tournament of course, we're going home this weekend to pick them up.' 'Can I come?' was my first response. I blushed as I realized how rude it was to invite myself, but Charlie didn't seem to notice. 'Of course! I'm sure Dumbledore wouldn't mind. But, eh... you can also go the "Fred&George-way" and not telling him about it...'
'Playing truant, aren't we?' grinned Fred – where the hells did he even come from?! – as he and George plopped on the couch with two full backpacks. 'Tss. She's just as bad as you are, Char,' said George and he winked at me, getting me to blush even more. 'I'll get some stuff I'll need,' I awkwardly smiled and raced upstairs, yet to be done in only three minutes and we went off to the Burrow.
'We're home!' the Twins screamed as they almost kicked down the door. Ron followed, shaking his head, with Ginny after him, giggling at her brother's behavior. When Charlie and I came in, I was splatted in a hug from Molly.
'Oh, Y/n, you sweet dragon! It's so long since you've been here! Fred and George never offered to get you here and, well, Percy never did so either. Now I must say he never invited someone, but after the visits you'd brought here I thought that I would at least see you more often!' she happily exclaimed, and I laughed and nodded it off. The living room was filled by Arthur, Bill and Percy, who all jumped up as we came in. 'Y/n L/n, so long you've been here!' said Arthur, while I greeted Bill and Percy. 'Great to see you again, Y/n,' Bill smiled. 'Guess Charlie brought you over?' He looked at Charlie, who rolled his eyes and gave him a look that I understood as "shut up or I'll hex you".
Surprised as I was to see Charlie do this after Bill's simple comment, I turned back to Molly and smiled politely. 'Molly, if I can help with anything, just call and I will–' 'Oh, no, you silly dragon, you won't be doing anything here. You're the guest! Come on, Ginny, help Y/n bringing her stuff up to your room.'
Ginny groaned and grabbed my trunk, but as soon as Molly was out of our sight I took it over from her. 'Here, I'll take it. Just show me the way,' I said. Ginny smiled and took me over to her room. 'Uh – we don't really have a guests bed, so you can just sleep in mine and I'll sleep on the –' 'What? No way!' I responded. 'No, you can stay in your bed. I'll sleep on the floor – believe me, I don't mind at all,' I said as Ginny protested that I was guest and all. She definitely looked like her mum.
'So, eh, Fred and George told me something,' Ginny said, looking down at her feet as she closed the door with her wand. 'About you... and Charlie.' 'I will kill those dudes if this is about what I think it's about,' I grumbled. Ginny looked up with a smirk. 'You like Charlie?' she softly asked.
Alright. Ginny was a girl, I could trust her. And yeah, I had to tell someone, so... 'Ginny, I don't like Charlie...' I started, just as soft as she had spoken. 'I... I love him.' That's when I found out Ginny was playing on the "Fred&George-way"; she jumped up and raced downstairs, with me right behind her. 'Ginny... don't you dare...' I panted, trying to stop her, but she was faster – why?! – and stormed into the living room, that only contained Fred, George, and Bill by now.
'Fred, George,' shouted Ginny and she stormed to their sides, whispering something into their ears. When I finally stumbled into the room, it was too late. The Twins were looking at me with grins like madmen, as proud as they were that their little sis had helped them. 'Well, dear Y/n, this is interesting information!' they laughed and high-fived, at the same time I was face-palming myself. Bill curiously looked from one to another. 'Where are you two talking about?' he asked, looking serious yet interested. George was the one to talk. 'You know that little thing we found out, a few years ago?' He gazed over at me with a large smirk. 'Our sister just confirmed that Y/n...' He hesitated, so Fred got the opportunity to finish it. '...she likes dragons.'
Bill's eyebrows planted themselves on his forehead. He turned from the Twins to me – meanwhile, I was red as could be and sweating like hell – and smiled. 'Ah. Yet another one.' Just when I was about to ask what this all meant, Ron walked into the room. 'Alright, I'm done with the dishes. Mum wants you all immediately in her kitchen to help with lunch,' said Ron and pointed at the four gingers in the room, who mocked and got themselves to Molly. I frowned, still not knowing what was going on.
'Ron, can I ask you something?' He looked up after my question. 'Eh, sure, I guess, as long as it's not about–' 'No, it's not about your pathetic friend Harry. I just... I was wondering... do you know anything about your brothers?' Now Ron frowned too and scratched the back of his head. 'Yeah... why?' asked he, suspiciously.
I shrugged casually. 'Oh... just checking up; you have any idea what it means when Fred and George say I like dragons?'
It seemed to be quite a shock for the fourteen year old. He shot up from his chair, looked at me with big eyes, opened his mouth and closed it again, then plopped back. Finally, he looked up at me. 'I-I don't k-know if I-I can tell y-you...' 'Ronald Billius Weasley, you tell me this instant or I'll let Fred and George spill your second name to the world,' I hissed, getting him over the line. 'Fine. Please, promise not to tell anyone...' he mumbled, then gestured me to come closer.
'It's actually a code-word. We made it up years ago, when Charlie was still at Hogwarts. It was originally meant for him, and sometimes, when he's here, we still use it. Just to check... to check if it's still true.' He swallowed and dug his nails into the chair, as if he was scared someone would hear him tell this. 'He had no idea what it meant, neither did mum and dad, but we – Fred, George, Bill, me, Ginny and yes, even Percy – made it up once we found out about something. It actually meant something else than liking dragons. We have mum to thank for this, actually, though she never found out...'
'So you all told Charlie he liked dragons? Why?' I asked softly, without any idea where this was going. Ron sighed and quickly peeked around some more, before going on. 'As I said, it meant something else to us. Something we found out about him, and since we couldn't tease him in front of mum and dad, we decided to do it on our own way.' I thought about what he said, but I still didn't understand. 'But why did you choose for "Charlie likes dragons" as code-word? What does it mean? And why did they use it on me too?' I kept out hearing him, demanding an answer right away.
He looked at me with those big eyes again. 'So... you have it too?' he asked, a slight surprised expression on his face. 'Wow. That's bloody cool, you know that?' 'What does it mean?' I whined, but just then, Fred and George stepped into the room.
'What's going on? Wait...' Fred gazed over at Ron with a pissed off expression. 'You fourteen year old git! We promised not to tell!' he hissed at him, but soon calmed down. 'Well, I think it's about time you know the truth, Y/n. But first...' 'Lunch,' George exclaimed and walked over to the kitchen, followed by Fred and a pretty sweaty Ron.
'This is definitely great, Molly! You are such an amazing chef!' I said, making the woman blush under my words. 'Oh, Y/n, dragon, I don't know...' 'Mum, just trust her. She's right,' said Ginny with a wink at me. 'Oh, yeah, she sure is,' Fred grinned. 'And you know, mum, we found out about something.' 'Yeah, we sure did,' added George, smirking back at his brother.
'What then, you two?' Molly asked, more focusing on the food than her sons. The Twins turned to me with a smirk. 'Y/n likes dragons, too.' Percy shot up, a bit confused first, but then grinned and looked at me too. 'Really, Y/n? I kind of knew, of course, but yeah...' 'Shut up, Perce,' chuckled Bill. I snorted at their reactions and decided that this was enough. After lunch, I'd have answers.
'Okay, you jerks,' I hissed, 'now tell me.' I'd lead Fred, George, Bill and Ginny away from the Burrow when everyone finished eating, and demanded that they'd share their secret. 'Come on, guys, she has the right to know,' said Bill and leaned up against a tree. 'Fine, I'll go,' mumbled Ginny and looked me in the eyes. 'We made this code, for Charlie, and it's called "Charlie likes dragons". We used it a lot, like, a LOT. He had no idea what was going on, but it was all about something he had told Bill. And Bill passed it to us.' Bill grinned and shrugged in her silence. 'Couldn't really do anything else, aye? But I think it was pretty obvious. Everyone knew.'
'Exactly,' Ginny continued. 'But what is it?' I asked, yet again. 'You haven't figured it out yet? Charlie. Likes. Dragons. Think, Y/n, think!' yelled George.
I thought all I could, but to no success. I could literally think of nothing. Ginny noticed it and walked a little closer to me. 'I think you have noticed, but you just don't see it yet, do you?' 'What is this about? Just tell me!' I shouted, now getting impatient.
Ginny grinned widely. 'Remember how Ron said our mum came up with it?' 'Yes,' I beamed up, glad to be going somewhere. Ginny's grin became wider. 'And you know how she always calls you "dragon"?'
I froze, from the tips of my toes to the top of my head. I'm the dragon. And Charlie likes dragons. Meaning...
Without hesitating, I turned to Bill. 'Where's Charlie?' I asked sharply. 'I need to talk to him.'
Only ten minutes later, I was back at the Burrow. Or actually, in the garden, staring at the back of Charlie, who sat about ten meters away from me. Ron pushed me a little in the back, making me turn around. All the Weasley's, except Molly and Arthur, stood there, grinning like crazy. 'C'mon, go for it,' said Fred. 'Dragon,' added George. I turned again and slowly walked up to Charlie.
'Hey.'
He looked up as I sat beside him, and smiled. 'Hey, Y/n. Did they finally let you go?' I chuckled softly. 'Yep. Now I'm all free to go again.' He laughed along with me, sending goosebumps all over my arms. Damn, I couldn't do this... I was way too nervous. Plus, I wouldn't even be able to find a good sentence to start with –
'So, you like dragons?'
Ah, thank you, Charles, I thought as I smiled at him. 'Yeah. But you know...' As he looked up, his blue eyes filled with questions, I finished it: '...I think I'm more into dragon trainers.'
At first, Charlie seemed surprised, even a bit confused. Then he saw the small hint in my eyes and he turned red as fire. 'Oh... Bill told you, didn't he?' he asked, before he groaned and let himself fall onto his back, eyes closed as he slowly breathed in and out. A giggle escaped from my mouth, getting him to open one eye.
'Maybe.' His other eye opened as I lay down next to him. 'You never told me you had a crush on me.' Charlie's face had the color of a tomato by now and he closed his eyes yet again. 'Y/n... I'm sorry,' he mumbled, taking me by surprise. 'I know we were friends, and that's the reason I never told you. I didn't want to break our friendship by letting you know I loved you... Oh, I ruined everything...'
'I don't think you really get my answer, Charles.' I grinned as he opened his eyes yet again. 'I believe I said I'm pretty much into dragon trainers. Do you know how many dragon trainers I know? One,' I answered for him. His face began to be a little less red, as I went on: 'That's you. And since I think dragons are awesome, it means I kind of like you back.'
Charlie's eyes went big, like Ron's did. He hesitated just a bit, before he smiled again and got a little closer. Just before I knew, he was kissing my lips. It shocked me a little, but I soon decided he was an amazing kisser and I returned it, opening my lips as he licked my bottom one. His tong roamed around for a bit, just before he pulled away and pecked my nose softly.
'Finally!' someone behind us exclaimed. We turned around, seeing everyone staring and smiling. But something in Charlie's eyes suddenly changed, as he gazed down, mumbling to himself. 'Wait a second...Charlie. Likes. Dragons.' He looked up to his siblings, this time eyes huge and confused, as he slowly turned to me. 'And... mum keeps calling you dragon... so...'
An annoyed grunt left his mouth and he got up, taking his wand out and pointed it at his brothers and sister. 'You all knew! Fred, George, Ron – heck, even Percy! And you didn't tell me! You pricks!' he shouted. 'Run!' the twins screamed, causing all the red-heads to indeed run away further into the garden. Charlie groaned, blinked me an apologizing look, and started to chase all of them around the garden. I laughed as I watched them.
Oh yeah, I really liked dragon trainers.
