After seven years
'Hey.'
Dean looked up as I sat down next to him. He gave me a half-smile back. 'Oh, hey.' I did my best to make the following silence not uncomfortably long. But of course, I failed.
'So, er...' What could you possibly say to your best friend after Wizard War Two?' '...good to see you're alive.' 'Yeah, same to you.' Dean smiled. 'Heard you blew up that bridge.' 'Well, mainly Neville.' Even though I was being honest with the "mainly Neville", I couldn't help but crack a smile. Dean must've noticed, because he went on: 'Although, I am surprised to see your face isn't covered in black sulphur.' I let out a chuckle and turned to the Great Hall, once filled with pride and beauty, now with survivors and dying victims of a disaster. Now Lord Voldemort and his followers were defeated, we had time to mourn and remember the ones who had left us. Fred Weasley, of course, we're going to miss him for sure. And I heard Lavender Brown got eaten by a werewolf... Poor girl.
Someone from the other side yelled my name, with the following message to come over. Sighing, I left my seat, facing Dean once more. 'I, er, I gotta go. See you later, then?' Dean nodded and I turned to walk over to the other side, but was stopped by Dean's voice.
'Seamus, I...'
I looked over at him from the small distance I had already taken. His eyes told me the words he wanted to speak, the words he had saved seven years for me. But his mouth said the complete opposite.
'Yeah. See you later.'
He hesitated just another second, before turning to Harry and Ron, leaving me as hurt as could be. Never had I thought those words could be as painful as they were now. There I stood, sighing again and watching my best friend disappear in the crowd of wizards and elves.
After seven years, seven long years, he still didn't have the courage to tell me he loved me.
