Hockey Wives Xtra - Q&A #2
by Jenn Hough for SportsLife Media
The highly anticipated revival of Hockey Wives is set to premiere soon, and in the lead up to the show's premiere, here is part 2 of a four-part Q&A session with the cast of the show!
In this Q&A, I sat down with five cast members who also happen to be athletes in their own rights: Olympic gymnast Lexi Carter (21, fiancée of Boston Bruins left winger Jake DeBrusk), pastry chef and former WWE wrestler Raeleigh Daniels (27, girlfriend of Tampa Bay Lightning centre Brayden Point), Edmonton Oilers left wing Adele Davignon-Baboni (23, fiancée of Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid), Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Madeleine Martin (25, girlfriend of Toronto Maple Leafs centre Frederik Andersen) and Toronto Maple Leafs centre Cosette Ovechkina (22, girlfriend of Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews).
Good afternoon ladies! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
Lexi: Thanks for having us, we're so excited to be here.
So, firstly, can you all introduce yourselves for those who may not be familiar with you?
Lexi: My name is Lexi Carter, I am a gymnast and two-time Olympic champion, and also mommy to baby Drew.
Raeleigh: I'm Raeleigh Daniels! You may know me better as Victoria from WWE, and I'm now the owner and operator of Cupcakes Galore & More!
Adele: Hey everyone, I'm Adele Davignon-Baboni, left winger for the Edmonton Oilers!
Madeleine: Bonjour, my name is Madeleine Martin, goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Cosette: Hi, I'm Cosette Ovechkina, I'm the daughter of Alexander Ovechkin and I play for the Toronto Maple Leafs!
Why did you join the show?
Adele: Even though I'll say me and Connor have been pretty open about our relationship, I wanted to show my fans a bit more of what I am like when I'm not on the ice! I felt that after a few years in the NHL, now was the right time to do that.
Raeleigh: Since leaving the WWE behind, I haven't been in the public eye all that much, except when Cupcakes Galore & More is in the press. After taking more private time to start my business, I feel more comfortable than ever to give my patient fans a close-up look into what I've been up to since leaving the ring for baking!
Cosette: Fans know me as a serious goon on the ice, but most fans don't really know what I'm like when I'm not playing hockey. I figured it was time to finally show fans a bit more of the non-goon Cosette, when she isn't throwing down the gloves or snapping hard shots.
Lexi: Similarly to the other girls, people mostly just know the gymnast me. I've kept the other side of me, the fiancée and the mother, mostly quiet. People think my whole life is gymnastics, and I want people to see the part of me that isn't a gymnast. That isn't doing graceful and powerful flips and tumbles, but has bed head and is carrying around a slobbery baby. I hope people can grow to see me more as a person.
Madeleine: Freddie and I didn't announce our relationship until now. We've both been so concerned about how people will react to us being a couple, we felt like we had to hide it for so long. While hiding it has been good, and we were able to grow our relationship in a safe way without worrying about the eyes of the world being on us, we decided we're ready to share our lives a little more and let out the secret.
This is a reboot of the original Hockey Wives from 2015, which ran for 3 seasons. What is similar about this reboot, and what has changed from the original show?
Madeleine: I think overall, it's pretty similar to the original show, with it being focused on our lives outside of hockey and how we support our partners. However, a lot more of us are involved in the hockey world in this reboot, and in addition, many of us are younger and less of us have kids, so in a way we're targeting a different demographic.
What can we expect to see (either in general or from you specifically) on the show?
Cosette: Even though I won't be on the ice all the time... keep expecting plenty of classic Cosette. There will be no shortage of goon moments from me, in practice and during games.
Raeleigh: I still do some stuff with WWE, so you can expect a few visits. Also be sure to expect lots of yummy cakes... I suggest you don't watch my segments on an empty stomach!
Lexi: My scenes are pretty evenly divided between being at home with my baby girl, and at the training center training for gymnastics. Since those are the main things I am doing right now. On occasion, I did get a break from all that, and that is shown as well.
Adele: Like Cosette, I have a lot of goon moments, but I also have a lot of romantic moments. I'm never shy about showing affection to my Connor, and he isn't shy either, so we definitely have some loving moments together.
How have your partners handled your new work as part of the show?
Madeleine: Freddie's been a bit shy with the cameras, but I'd say he's improving. After a few episodes' worth of filming, he got more comfortable on camera.
Adele: Given how much hype he received as a young player, being pinpointed as the next "generational player", Connor's had cameras and spotlight on him constantly. It's nothing new for him really. His interview skills need work still, but he's not at all weirded out by cameras being around him.
Lexi: Jake's adjusted really well, all things considered. It is weird for him, but he's grown to enjoy the experience. I think he quite likes it now. Not to the point where he'd want a reality show of his own like the Kardashians, but he finds it fun these days.
Okay, now for some rapid fire questions to get to know you better. Who is the loudest?
Raeleigh: Either of the self-proclaimed goons.
Madeleine: Especially when they're chirping during games!
Adele: Some days I'm really quiet, but usually I tell it like it is. I'm not hiding any bullsh*t.
Cosette: I give zero f*cks. I don't do the sweet innocent lying sh*t!
Lexi: Quick! Move on before we have to censor the rest of the interview! *laughs*
Funniest?
Cosette: You wouldn't think it, but Mads is pretty funny. She's quietly funny.
Raeleigh: I agree, she was really shy at first but she came out of her shell and now makes me laugh all the time!
Madeleine: I only crack jokes with people I am comfortable with. But I do like to tell them!
Calmest?
Adele: If we're talking off the ice, I'm pretty calm. If we're talking on the ice... definitely not me.
Lexi: Most of us are fairly calm... but we have our berserk buttons that will set us off. I'm pretty calm unless my berserk button is activated.
Who is the mom figure of the group?
Raeleigh: Lexi. Her mom instincts are always with her.
Madeleine: Truth. I wouldn't say she is the main mom of the whole cast, but among us five, her maternal instincts are always switched on. The rest of us, not so much.
Who gets away with the most?
Cosette: I would say Madeleine or Lexi could get away with murder, because no one expects them to do anything vicious.
Raeleigh: Adele and Cosette are self-professed goons, and I was a heel in the WWE. I think everyone expects us to do messy stuff, so it's harder for us to get away with it.
Lexi: That's true in a sense... then again, they could let you get away with more BECAUSE no one expects any different of you!
Adele: Okay, that's fair! *laughs*
Who cheers the loudest for their boyfriend at games?
Cosette: I mean, she's not in the stands, but Adele is f**king ECSTATIC whenever Connor scores.
Adele: You got that right, I can't help myself! If not for the visors in our way, and the speed of the game, I'd make out with him then and there.
Madeleine: When I'm on the bench watching Freddie play, I cheer as much as I can, especially if he makes huge saves. But yeah, probably Adele from her reactions to Connor scoring.
Who knows the most about hockey?
Lexi: Hard question. Probably not me though.
Raeleigh: 3/5 people in this room are experts. I don't know if anyone has a clear edge.
Last question, and this one you can answer in as long or as short as you want: what do you hope to achieve by being on this show? What's your goal?
Lexi: I hope one day, my daughter Drew sees episodes from this show and has fond memories of great times spent with her parents. I know she probably won't remember these moments first-hand, but having them recorded, she'll be able to watch the moments we tell her about when she is older.
Adele: My goal is to reach a new audience of people who maybe don't know me from being a hockey player, and just to have fun and make great memories with new friends, and Connor of course! Hopefully girls who watch become inspired to maybe get into hockey!
Madeleine: I hope that this will be a good introduction of me, Freddie and our relationship to those who watch the show, and I hope that I can be an inspiration to even just one viewer in some way.
Raeleigh: It could be a good way to promote my bakery, it could also be a good way to preserve memories of this time, maybe it will encourage more people to take up baking, wrestling or hockey! But ultimately, having fun is most important!
Cosette: I hope to promote the game of hockey through doing this show. It would be great to get more female representation in the hockey world, and if this show can lead more girls to join the top ranks of hockey, I feel that's a mission accomplished.
Thanks to Adele, Cosette, Lexi, Madeleine and Raeleigh for taking the time to speak with me! More interviews coming soon!
