Hockey Wives Xtra - Q&A #1
by Jenn Hough for SportsLife Media
The highly anticipated revival of Hockey Wives is set to premiere soon, and in the lead up to the show's premiere, here is part 1 of a four-part Q&A session with the cast of the show!
In this Q&A, I sat down with six of the youngest cast members: Instagram model Alexa Mendez (19, girlfriend of Los Angeles Kings prospect centre Alex Turcotte), beauty YouTuber Sabrina Müller (20, girlfriend of New Jersey Devils centre Nico Hischier), collegiate volleyball player Rosalie Santiago (19, girlfriend of Chicago Blackhawks centre Kirby Dach), singer-songwriter Carlie Tang (18, girlfriend of New Jersey Devils centre Jack Hughes), dancer Parvati Walker (21, girlfriend of Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes) and collegiate gymnast and YouTuber Caitlin Wheeler (20, girlfriend of Arizona Coyotes centre Barrett Hayton).
Good afternoon ladies! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
Parvati: Thank you for having us!
So, firstly, can you all introduce yourselves for those who may not be familiar with you?
Alexa: Hi everyone, I'm Alexa Mendez. I come from Miami, Florida and you may recognize me for my modelling work on Instagram!
Carlie: I'm Carlie Tang, I'm currently a student at Dalhousie University and I'm working towards a career in music!
Caitlin: Hey! I'm Caitlin Wheeler! I'm currently at Arizona State University, competing for the Sun Devils gymnastics team in the NCAA.
Rosalie: Hello! My name is Rosalie Santiago, and I am an NCAA volleyball player for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks.
Sabrina: My name is Sabrina Müller! You may recognize me from my YouTube channel. I'm a student makeup artist and I'm currently working towards getting a professional license.
Parvati: I'm Parvati Walker, I am a student at the University of Southern California's Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. I also played "Chandramukhi" in a viral YouTube dance cover of "Dola Re Dola" from the movie Devdas that I made with my cousin.
Why did you join the show?
Carlie: We often see the wives, the ones who are married to hockey players, especially when the players are in the mid to late part of their careers. We usually don't see the life of girls who are dating rookies; guys at the beginning of their careers. There's similarities, but it's quite different to dating an established player, let alone being married to them. I joined to give people a greater glimpse into dating and supporting a player who's just starting out, getting integrated and all that. Since neither me nor Jack had totally established ourselves in the organization at the start of the season, we had to find our way to get integrated. I also wanted to show people, especially young Asian girls like me, that it's not impossible to make it in a musical career, or any career you wish to pursue, so long as you work hard for it and embrace all that comes with the journey, good and bad.
Alexa: I joined for a similar reason to Carlie, with a few differences. In our case, Alex hasn't even started playing with his NHL team. He was at college this season. For me, I'm showing an even earlier stage: being with a player before he even starts. It's a shaky time, because it's so tough to crack an NHL roster in the first place, and you want to be there to support him whether he cracks the main roster or plays in the minors. In addition, I'm still trying to balance my modelling and influencing career in Miami and LA. So I also wanted to show people that while maintaining a long distance relationship (plus demanding careers) can be difficult, it can be done.
Parvati: Part of why I joined this show was to encourage people to get active and moving. Both me and Quinn are pursuing very active careers, and we want to encourage people to move more to be healthy. I also just thought it would be a fun experience, and a way to hopefully reach a new audience that I haven't reached yet with my dance videos.
Rosalie: I was debating joining at all, because me and Kirby were keeping our relationship very private and hadn't revealed it to anyone outside of family and close friends. But we decided that we were prepared to be a little more open about our lives, and decided to do the show so that we could share more of our lives with the world. We also didn't want there to be excess gossip about our relationship, so we figured by doing the show, it would help to eliminate more potential gossip.
Sabrina: Really, I can't explain why I joined except that I thought it would be a fun experience! And it has been... I've really enjoyed filming, especially with the other girls. I've gotten to know so many more people through the show, and I think that's what's kept me going. Socializing is the best part of the job!
Caitlin: My reason was really the same as Sabrina's. I wanted to meet new people and expand my social circle, plus just thought it could be a great experience! I've gotten to meet many amazing girls I might not have met otherwise through being part of "Hockey Wives" and I am so grateful for that.
This is a reboot of the original Hockey Wives from 2015, which ran for 3 seasons. What is similar about this reboot, and what has changed from the original show?
Rosalie: A lot will be similar to the original show. It's still very much focused on our lives both in and out of the rink, and the ups and downs of being a hockey WAG. However, I'd say we're a little more spread out in ages this season. Most of the cast in the previous seasons were around the same age group. Here, we have young ones like us, either still in or fresh out of our teens, and then a few that married to seasoned veterans, plus some that have children. We're in all different stages of life, and pursuing different careers. Otherwise, I'd still say the main idea of the show is the same, and we hope the show hasn't strayed too far away from its original formula.
What can we expect to see (either in general or from you specifically) on the show?
Parvati: In my case, a lot of the stuff filmed focuses on my dance studies, but don't worry, that isn't all that was filmed of me! Me and Quinn also ended up going on a group date... exactly how that went and who else went, you'll have to wait and see. In general, most of it is focusing on our individual lives and careers, but there are gatherings and interactions between some, many or all of us, and of course, hockey!
Alexa: My favourite thing that they filmed of me was my reaction to Alex telling me he signed his entry-level contract with LA. I screamed *laughed* I started jumping up and down, I was so excited and happy for him! Other than that, lots of me looking for work and travelling between LA and Miami.
Caitlin: All I can really say about this season for me is... there's definitely drama *laughs* there is no shortage of tension in some scenes. There are friendly scenes of course, but I can't say there was no drama. There always is!
Carlie: They got some footage of me at the recording studio working on original songs, which was really awesome. Parvati and I also filmed with the Hughes family at their home in Michigan when we all went to visit, so that was great! Honestly, I'm so thankful for how loving the family has been to both of us. Ellen treats me and Paro like the daughters she never had... and you'll get to see that at some point during the season!
Sabrina: I got to do some pretty interesting makeup jobs, so some of those will be shown! Nico and I also adopted a poodle together just around the time filming was starting up, so our adjustment to being dog parents is shown a bit on the show. You'll be seeing lots of Teddy!
How have your partners handled your new work as part of the show?
Caitlin: Barrett's handled it pretty well. I think he had a feeling when the casting call came out for this reboot, that I would want to do it, so he'd mentally prepared himself for me to get involved. He's been really supportive as well and told me not to put too much pressure on myself. I don't know if he loves the cameras, but he's gotten very used to them!
Rosalie: Since this was the first time we were publicly revealing our relationship, it was quite nerve-wracking for Kirby. He's a pretty chill guy, but it took him a while to get used to the cameras. He was worried about coming across the wrong way but I think he's more comfortable with them now.
Carlie: Jack has kind of been around cameras a lot. Heading into the draft, he'd done so many interviews with the Detroit news because of his standing as the consensus #1, so I think he's pretty used to cameras. It wasn't a huge adjustment for him.
Okay, now for some rapid fire questions to get to know you better. Out of the six of you, who is the loudest?
Caitlin: I'm up there, but it's definitely Alexa.
Carlie: Alexa.
Parvati: Alexa.
Sabrina: Alexa.
Rosalie: Alexa.
Alexa: Definitely me. I don't mind saying that.
Funniest?
Carlie: Parvati's actually pretty funny. People usually don't think she would be.
Parvati: I can be funny sometimes, but I'll probably say Sabrina.
Sabrina: Aw thanks! I think probably Alexa though.
Alexa: I thought Caitlin.
Rosalie: I agree, Caitlin can be really funny, especially on social media.
Caitlin: Nah, I'll say Alexa again.
Calmest?
Carlie: Rosalie.
Rosalie: I was gonna say you, Carlie!
Carlie: Ehhh... I act calm but I freak out easily. You're a BEAST under pressure.
Who is the mom figure of the group?
Alexa: If we're talking about the whole cast, definitely not any of us *laughs* since we're the youngest. But out of us six... I'd say Parvati.
Carlie: Yeah, I'd agree with that. Paro's kind of the mom of us six.
Caitlin: She gets protective a lot, always keeping us focused and on track.
Parvati: I would agree... I've always kinda been the mature and protective one of us. But if you add the other 18 cast members, I'm NOT the main mom friend *laughs* Rosalie has mom tendencies though.
Rosalie: Since when??
Sabrina: Paro has a point *laughs* you act like a mom sometimes, to us and your volleyball teammates!
Who gets away with the most?
Alexa: Carlie, because she's the youngest.
Carlie: Hey! I don't even try to get away with anything! *laughs* I'd say Sabrina gets away with a lot. She has her ways.
Sabrina: Really? I was gonna say you or Caitlin gets away with the most! Caitlin's sneaky. She knows what's up.
Caitlin: I'd like to think it's me! I've gotten away with some pretty crazy stuff before...
Parvati: It's easily you, Caitlin. The rest of us don't come close.
Rosalie: Caitlin, though Alexa has a point. Carlie can get away with a lot because she is the youngest.
Who cheers the loudest for their boyfriend at games?
Carlie: Alex told Jack, who told me... in the few Badgers games Alexa managed to get to, she was screaming so loud for Alex that the opposing coach and fans of the opposing team actually were starting to get pissed off.
Alexa: What can I say? I'm a proud girlfriend!
Sabrina: We all get pretty loud. *laughs* That's our job!
Who knows the most about hockey?
Caitlin: Probably Carlie. She got raised watching the sport the most frequently of all of us.
Parvati: I agree... my family watched soccer and cricket. Not much hockey, which I wish we watched more often then!
Rosalie: I was too focused on volleyball to constantly learn about hockey. So I didn't watch a ton growing up!
Last question, and this one you can answer in as long or as short as you want: do you hope to achieve by being on this show? What's your goal?
Carlie: My biggest goal is to encourage anyone who watches this show, especially young East Asian girls like me, that they can be strong and chase their goals. Being a Chinese Canadian, later living in the USA, I didn't have many role models to look up to in film and television, let alone music. I often wished I had a good role model for me, especially in my career path. If I am an inspiration to even just one little girl out there, I will say this whole show was worth it.
Sabrina: I would agree with Carlie. I hope at least one viewer takes something positive from watching me on the show! I also hope my story inspires other people moving abroad for school or work to reach for the stars.
Alexa: My biggest goal was to hopefully give my fans a bit more insight into my life, and also reach a new audience of fans who may not otherwise hear about me. I also hope to be a positive influence, especially on Cuban American youth and also on young people in my hometown of Miami!
Caitlin: Similar to Alexa, I just wanted to share a bit more of my life with my fans in a new way! I feel like I can share a different side of my life on television, and I can't wait for my fans to see this side of me.
Parvati: I want to encourage people to pursue their dreams, even if it seems like a tough or unstable career. Dancing is an uncertain lifestyle, as is hockey. Anything can make the difference between living a comfortable life or barely being able to put food on the table in these careers. Breaking in can be so hard, and I wanted to show that life to people, both as an honest warning and as encouragement, because it is possible to achieve your goals! And now that I think about it, I hope to be a good influence on Indian American youth.
Rosalie: I just felt it was a good time to share more of my life with my fans, and I wanted to share it in a more organized way. I hope I can be a good role model to anyone who watches me, and that I can inspire a new generation of young athletes through the show!
Thanks to Alexa, Caitlin, Carlie, Parvati, Rosalie and Sabrina for taking the time to speak with me! More interviews coming soon!
