Chapter Twenty-Three
Tyler and Fabien are curled up on my bed in my room, snuggling together now. Spencer is brainstorming a list of potential villains and getting nowhere. He balls up his latest paper with names listed on it.
Meanwhile, Jonni and I decide to explore and play the game. We've grabbed two sets of controllers from his room and hooked them up to my laptop. It's not really much of one. Just a lot of black and white and glimpses of weird images, numbers and letters within the walls of the game structure.
I remember reading about the game once. It's a PC game that was built with the Terror Engine, first reported on a Youtube channel known as 'Obscure Horror Corner' on June 25, 2015. Since then it's made its way around and can now be played on a Mac. The channel's owner claimed to have downloaded the game from a Tor hidden service after receiving a tip from an anonymous subscriber. The subscriber in turn claimed to have found the link via a deep web internet forum, from a user only known as 'ZK.'
"Alright, let's see what this thing is all about," I exclaim, not really excited about it. It's more of a knowledge and dreaded obligation. Like we have to play it.
As we get into the beginning of it, I can hear a distorted and reversed version of 'Wo Ai Beijing Tiananmen' playing. We both navigate our way through the monochromatic corridors and begin to hear various audio samples being played and looped over each other. The audio in the game, as we get into it, seems to lean heavily on recordings of interviews with various murderers, such as Charles Manson. There is also heavily audio of such interviews or musical clips.
"With a name like 'Sad Satan', I was thinking it had something to do with the Devil...but this is kinda harmless...just weird and creepy," Jonni remarks.
I grumble a response to him in agreement.
As we play it, I am thinking and fearing, what other skeptics had initially once felt, that it may contain gore or child pornography. The common staples of media traded throughout the deep dark web.
But, as I am seeing and that it clearly states via the playthroughs that people have had, no such material is contained.
Before long, I am also hearing the reversed clips from the Swedish Rhapsodynumbers Station, while we are controlling our characters through the hallways. Soon images also intermittently display, taking up the entire screen and preventing the player from progressing any further until the image automatically closes a few seconds later.
While there isn't the child porn, most of the images seem to reference child abuse, especially people indicted in Operation Yewtree, like Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris. Other images revolve around crime and include people convicted or accused of murder, such as Japanese murderer Tsutomu Miyazaki, photographs of Lady Justice statues, and political figures such as former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
"This game is weird shit, man," Jonni remarks as he navigates down another hallway that shows images of accident victims and murder victims are also shown, including the aftermath of a person struck by a truck, and a beheading.
As we head out of that hallway and onto the next an image pops up and vanishes before we can process it completely in our brains. We don't think too much of it. Only that it was some woman's profile.
She was probably just another murderer like the others, I think to myself.
We play on, until something scares the living shit out of me. It's the only other 'characters' in the game, a little girl child. She is just simply standing in one place and does not move or interact with us at all.
I immediately think of that Stephen King book, The Shining with the twins in that hotel that just stand there creepily. "What the actual frickity frack?!" I gasp. "Why is it just frickin' standing there. That's creepy as hell!"
"True," Jonni mutters. "Move, kid!"
We control our characters around the kid.
As we run into another few of these creepy children, one of them actually does begin to follow my character around, causing 'contact damage.' Since Jonni and I have no means of self-defense or any ability to heal damage, I know that we will inevitably die at this point in the game.
A nice ending to a dark web game I guess.
The child causes enough mortal damage to my character and then turns to destroy Jonni. Jonni sighs and throws his controller down in frustration.
"This game is stupid."
"It's a dark web game, Jonni. You thought you'd get out and marry a princess in the end?" I murmur, rolling my eyes. "Wrong. You die. Of course."
Just as the final blow is taken to Jonni's character, before the 'Game Over' words come across the screen, I can barely make out the outline of a series of letters in the static-y background...
L. Y. N. E. T. T. E.
S. P. I. E. G. E. L.
Then 'Game Over' flashes across a black screen, similar to an old school video game from the 80's.
My blood is ice cold and my mind is focused solely on the name. I know the name. I know her. Maybe it wasn't just a random thought earlier...
Lynette Spiegel.
