1. As the man left the café, Maria saw that his phone was still on the table.

She picked it up, curious of what secrets it hid. As soon as she turned it on, she was startled by the face of the man that was sitting in front of her just a minute ago.

He thanked her for picking up his phone; he told her that his whole life depended on that thing. Maria, driven by curiosity, asked him if she would ever see him again. He said it was not likely because of his job, but maybe if she came to that café at that exact same hour, she would find him there again, just like today.

She went there every day at 6pm, thinking he might be there today, or maybe tomorrow, or maybe the day after. Without realizing it, she had fallen in love with this mysterious man of whom she knew nothing about. She fell in love with his sweet voice and charming stories. She was hopelessly, madly in love.

But love, love is always changing.

One day, exactly a year after their first encounter, the man came back to the café. He saw Maria, but as he was approaching her, another man got there first. He handed her a cup of coffee and kissed her. She looked happy. She had found another man…

3. It was a trip I will never forget

Well, we arrived home yesterday from China.  First let us say…..what a GREAT tour, we could not have wished for anything more!

From our first day on our arrival when we saw my name on the board at Shanghai Airport, until the final trip to Beijing Airport to return home was amazing.  Shanghai was everything we had hoped for and the accommodation right through was fantastic.  The only hotel we weren’t keen on was Shanghai harbour view. We especially enjoyed the view here although the weather was so cold. We never had to carry our luggage once, everybody was so kind and helpful.  The hospitality we received all the way was phenomenal!

We thought our private tour was exceptional as our guides were too. Our transfers were second-to-none.  We will certainly be referring this trip to all our friends.  Unfortunately, a couple of us (including myself) got sick along the way and had to use the aspirin, and to their credit, they were also fantastic. What a great idea for the health insurance, especially when you’re sick in a strange country.

Thank you so much for all your hard work.  We will never forget this trip and it will foremost in our minds for many years to come.

Dear Hoa,

I’m happy that you rely on me as your pen-friend. So now I will give you some my advices on keeping fit and healthy. My husband and I were all less physically active than we used to be, mainly because of the sort of jobs we do. Regular exercise, playing sport or taking some form of physical activity for 30 minutes at least five days a week will have a positive effect on your health.

Regular exercise can help increase your energy levels, reduce stress and burn fat to keep your weight down. It can also keep organs, like your heart, healthy.

You could go to a gym, join a class or go for a swim. You can join in with team sports, such as football or netball. If you’re short of time, why not keep fit by riding a bike or walking briskly instead of driving or taking the bus?

Dear Lance:

I am writing to you as a fellow graduate of Hofstra University (class of 2002) and would sincerely appreciate any insight you could provide me into McClain Companies. I have been working in sales for almost five years but this job did not suit my major and I am now looking to transition into corporate human resources at a company such as yours.

Although successful in my sales career, I have realized the aspects of my work I find most rewarding are all in HR-related functions. The following offers a few highlights of my qualifications:

Solid foundation in HR affairs: As senior account executive, I have been responsible for a number of HR functions, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring and training new employees. A quick learner of complex concepts and legal issues, I am eager to broaden these competencies.

Dynamic communication style: I am adept in building relationships, consensus and a shared sense of purpose. I am known for my ability to quickly establish trust with employees, mediate disputes and motivate others into action.

Experience in corporate training: A constant throughout my sales career has been my passion for the design and delivery of staff development programs. Comfortable and experienced giving both large and small-group presentations, I have conducted hundreds of training seminars for diverse audiences across all organizational levels.

If you know of anyone within McClain Companies who might be looking for someone with my qualifications, I would be very grateful for your referral. Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Kind regards,

Betty Hernandez

I know I spend too much time watching television. Of course, with its advantages the television also has certain disadvantages. If a person spends too much time in watching television every day, then he will become lazy and shirk work. He would like to sit idle and waste his time. If one sees pictures from a close distance on the television set, it affects the eye-sight. It is thus very risky for the small children who always sit very close to the television set. The students also get the bad habit of seeing films on the television. During the television time the students do not pay any attention to their studies which will affect their educational career. The use of television set also increases the electricity bill greatly.

There is more and more fun you can do to relax. You should spend time doing housework like cleaning the house, washing, making furniture in another position…While doing these works you listen to music. It will make you more fun and leisure.

I hope you will be happy with new things.

Love,

Rechard

8. A BIG DECISION

It was a sunny day, a six-year-old boy walked up to his father one day and announced, 'Daddy, I'd like to get married.'

His father replied hesitantly, 'Sure, son, do you have anyone special in mind?'

'Yes,' answered the boy. 'I want to marry Grandma.'

'Now, wait a minute,' said his father. 'You don't think I'd let you get married with my mother, do you?'

'Why not?' the boy asked. 'You married mine.'

Dear Alian,

You say you want to have the same holiday as mine, but the place I am on holiday is not the best choice. It’s very cold and wet, and the weather forecast says it will get worse. The food at the hotel is terrible, the rooms are not clean. The staff is rude and unhelpful. The staff members argue with each other. Sometimes they swear at the managers. Many guests like me are so bored because there is nothing to do. There are no activities at night. In the day, there are few sports and nothing to see. Another time, we changed the tide of our bad room luck. After booking a room using Lonely Planet's Taiwan book as a guide, we discovered that we made a mistake. First clue was the beds didn't have sheets. I'm not exactly sure why we trolled the halls looking for sheets, but we did and found some in a cabinet somewhere. Plus, one of the beds was round and covered with a pink fuzzy bed spread. Perhaps the management thought this was special. We thought brothel. Since my mother and, at the time, 7 year-old daughter was with us, we thought we could do better. We'd paid for two nights but got a refund on night number two. One night made for a good story. The second night in another hotel was spent in slumber bliss.

From above reasons I think you should choose another place for your holiday. It will be better if you come to my city. I will be a tour guide and I will take you to Catba island – one of the beautiful place in my city.

I hope that you will have a good time in my city.

I’m looking forward to seeing you.

10. The most memorable event in my life

It was the first day I go to school. I had never been to any kindergartens before so I had no many friends as others and I hadn’t known any children songs. I was very shy. I was very strange with others. My father took me to school and I didn’t let him come home until I finished my class. I asked him to wait for me outside the classroom. When the teacher asked us to sing a song called “Our class”. All my classmates sang and clapped their hands at the same time but me. I didn’t know that song. I had never been learned before. I felt myself strange from others. I was like a fish out of water. My father still stood outside the class and encouraged me by clapping his hands and smiled with me. I felt secure when he was always with me. I was very grateful at my dad very much.

Dear Hugh,

It has been months since the last time I heard from you. How was your winter break? I’m sorry that I was too busy to reply your letter. Now I have more free time because Tet Holiday is only a week away.

Tet Holiday is our traditional festival, which is also known as Lunar New Year. It comes later than your New Year in Britain, around the end of January and the begin of February. Since Tet is our biggest holiday of the year, there are many special activities on this occasion. We clean and decorate our house with peach flowers to welcome guests visiting us because relatives ands friends usually come to see each other on Tet. We send wishes to people we love, especially to children and the elderly by giving them red pockets of lucky money. Therefore, Tet is the occasion Vietnamese show care and respect to others. This explains why Tet is the most favourite holiday to many people, including me.

This year I even have an amazing plan for Tet Holiday. I am going to work at Vietnam Museum of Ethonoly as a volunteer for two days, hence I have the chance to enjoy Tet in many different ways of Vietnamese ethnic groups. Does it sound fascinating enough for you to be jealous with me? Don’t worry, I will send you some banh chung, our traditional cake on Tet holiday. Just kidding, dream on!

Dear Hugh,

Like many other neighbor countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has a precious treasure: its people. Everywhere you go, you will be welcomed by smiles and kind helps from the locals- whether they know Vietnamese or not. People from Hue, for example, are famous all over the country for their royal-like attitude: elegant and sweet. Those from Hoi An, on the other hand, are known for being honest. If you have time to spend in the Mekong delta of Vietnam, you will even be more surprised and inspired by the way you are received by local farmers. Get impressed!

Dear George,

I know this must be a very difficult time for you but don’t worry I’m sure you will make your parents and your friend satisfied with your choice.

Anyway, going on holiday with parents will express your feelings for your relatives. I definitely think that you should talk to your friends whether they may postpone the trip for another day.

If I were you, I would say to my friends that my parents and this holiday are very important for me. I love my family so much. So this time I will be with them. See you next time. I suppose we cancel for next week. At that time I will be free and that time will be happier.

Come on, buck up, I’m sure these bad times will pass very fast.

Take care

Dear Hugh,

I have recently started my English course. I will tell you how much I like my this class. Being a student, you find many people ask you "Do you like your course?", As a result, here are some reasons I want to explain. First to acquire another culture that is not mine; it is the first thing that attracts me to learn another language. being able to translate another language to your native tongue is something that capable you to communicate with foreigners. Second, It is an international language, knowing English help you to progress with new technology. Furthermore most of the authentic books are in English. The third or its better to say the ultimate reason is that knowing English is one of two things you need to being known as literate person. English has adopted a vast number of words from other languages, I think that by learning etymology you can learn word from other languages, for example the word "television", is driven from English word  means "ti vi”. To sum up I should say that English sound modern maybe it is the main reason fascinate me and a lot of people all around the world.
