Chapter 6: Meeting The Parents
We sat in silence on the white carpet in my room, flipping through the notes we had managed to take in class.
Bored, I decided to listen to Hiccup's breathing, which I soon realized I found very calming. I glanced over at him as his shoulders and chest rose slightly, right before carefully dropping down again.
I stopped reading my notes as my focus fell upon him.
He glanced up at me once, before returning back to his notes. "Are you staring at me?"
His words crashed into me like an enraged bull, kicking me out of my trance and back to reality. I cleared my head and chewed on his words before coming up with what I deemed as a fitting answer.
"Wow, do you honestly think I have nothing better to do than sit and stare at you?" I let out a chuckle as my gaze turned back to my notes.
"Yeah" He said as a smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
I narrowed my eyes at him. Listen up, I was not going to sit there and admit I had been staring at him, I was definitely too proud for that, so I went for the second-best thing to do; pretend like I had no clue what he was going on about.
I turned my head and gestured to Stormfly, who was peacefully eating her dinner, which consisted of seeds, seeds and more seeds. "I was looking at her, you muttonhead"
Hiccup turned around to look at the cage, only to jump two feet up in the air at the sight of it. "Odin! How long has that been there?"
I snickered as I rolled my eyes at him and glided over to Stormfly's cage, opening it. The bird finished up her meal before lazily flying to my shoulder.
"She has been here longer than you have" I stroked the feathers on top of her head, resulting in a happy 'squawk!' from her.
Hiccup slowly stood up and took a step towards us. "Can I pet her?"
I thought about it for a second, before motioning for Stormfly to jump to my wrist.
Hiccup took another step closer, before carefully bringing his finger close to Stormfly, so that she would know that he meant her no harm.
When Stormfly didn't bite his finger off, he gained some confidence. He let his hand stroke her soft feathers. Stormfly seemed to be okay with it, so he repeated the action a few times.
"She's beautiful" Hiccup pointed out as a smile spread across his face. "What's her name?"
"Stormfly" I couldn't help but smile at the two of them. "Do you have any pets?"
Hiccup stopped petting Stormfly as he picked up his phone and turned it on, allowing me to see his lock screen. His lock screen displayed a photo of a green eyed, black Labrador, who was tilting his head curiously at the person behind the camera. That was possibly the cutest dog I had ever seen.
"This is my dog, Toothless" He pointed at the dog on the screen.
I knit my brows together in confusion. "Toothless?"
"Yeah" He began as he stashed his phone back into his pocket. "You see, the day I rescued him, it looked like he didn't have any teeth, so I named him 'Toothless'. I eventually realized that he did in fact have teeth, but I hadn't looked hard enough for them. But by the time I reached my realization, the name had already stuck, so there was no point in changing it"
"The reason Stormfly is named Stormfly is actually pretty cheesy" I smiled at the bird before scratching her under her beak.
Hiccup raised his eyebrow. "I'm intrigued, do tell"
"When we adopted Stormfly, I had no clue what to name her. Two days after we adopted her, my father took me to see X-Men, and I really took a liking to the name Storm. But Storm didn't feel right, so I tried to see if I could find an ending to it. Coincidentally, a pigeon flew right past my window at that time, and that's when I knew what I wanted to name her" I smiled at Stormfly once again as she flew up to my shoulder.
"Isn't that right, girl?" Stormfly squeaked happily in response.
"That sounds like a long process" Hiccup stated. I shrugged as I lead Stormfly into her cage again, locking it behind her.
When I was about to turn around and suggest that we continue our work, the door to my room swung open, causing Hiccup to jump, again.
Calm as ever, —seeing as I have gotten quite used to people storming into my room— I turned around to face my father, who was standing in the doorway.
"Dinner is ready, sweetie" My dad chanted, eyes closed. But when he opened his eyes, the carefree look that had been there earlier, vanished and was replaced with a stern look.
He locked eyes with Hiccup, his sky blue eyes boring through the poor boy.
I glanced over at Hiccup and noticed that all the color had been drained from his face, leaving him looking like he had seen things no living thing should witness.
He actually reminded me a lot of Eret when he first met my father, seeing as the exact same thing happened to him. It didn't take long for my dad to fall in love with Eret though, wonder what would happen now?
Hiccup swallowed hard before pulling himself together, straightening up and reaching his hand out to my father. "Hello Mr. Hofferson, it's a pleasure to meet you, my name is Hiccup. Hiccup Haddock"
Hiccup's voice was surprisingly enough, oozing confidence, but his body wasn't exactly following along.
Dad glanced down at Hiccup's trembling hand before he exchanged a look with me.
I was leaning against Stormfly's cage, arms crossed, mostly because I couldn't see how Hiccup —or anyone for that matter— could find my father intimidating.
I gave my father a slight nod, as if to tell him that Hiccup was harmless. Surprisingly enough, my father took the hint and grabbed a hold of Hiccup's hand.
"Pleasure to meet you too, son. It sure has been a long time, you're definitely not as scrawny as I remember you being!" A grin spread across my father's face as he shook Hiccup's hand vigorously. "And a firm handshake at that! Would you like to join us for dinner?"
I pinched the bridge of my nose, shaking my head as I watched my father. Why does he always do things like these?
A low buzz could be heard coming from Hiccup's back pocket. I glanced over at him as he ignored it.
A smile appeared on Hiccup's face. "Sure, I would love to"
"Wonderful! I'll go inform the Mrs. right away!" Dad said as he sprinted out the door and down the stairs.
Hiccup turned to me with an awkward smile as he scratched the back of his head. "Sorry?"
I let out a deep sigh. "Whatever, I guess it's okay. You can head downstairs if you want, I'm going to attempt to clean up here"
The awkwardness from earlier vanished from his face and I received a genuine smile. "Alright"
I gathered all my notes and books, —which had been scattered across the floor— before stuffing them into my backpack.
The sound of a familiar buzz filled my ears and temptation guided me towards my desk, where my phone was laying, screen lit up with a new notification.
New Message From : Eret
"Hey babe"
"Hope you had a nice afternoon, I'm still really sorry that I couldn't pick you up earlier, but I can make it up to you!"
"Take a look out the window ;)"
I frowned, hoping he wasn't going to do something cheesy, because then I would for sure hit him over the head with a stick.
I glanced out the window, and as promised, I found him, standing outside his car on the other side of the road, waving at me. I rolled my eyes at him as a smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
"You know I hate when you copy those dumb romantic movies"
"Stop that negativity and get outside, please"
I let out an annoyed sigh as I went downstairs. I tip-toed my way past the kitchen where my parents were chatting it up with Hiccup, their backs turned to me. As I watched them, the feeling of guilt washed over me, telling me that what I was doing wasn't right.
I dragged my hand across my face before pulling myself back together and walking into the kitchen. "Mom, dad, I'm going out. See you later, Hiccup"
I had barely taken a step out of the kitchen when my mother cleared her throat. "Astrid, you know it's rude to leave before the guest"
I turned around and was met by an unfamiliar, steely glare. My mother was never the strict type, she was usually pretty chill, but when she spoke in that cold way and sent me that look, I was compelled to follow her orders.
I sat down in the chair beside Hiccup and sent him a forced smile. "Sorry"
As we ate the dinner dad had prepared, my mother stumbled across the brilliant idea that was talking about the weather.
"It's truly saddening how little snow there has been this month" My mother said as she sliced the potato on her plate.
"At least we had a white Christmas for once, that counts for something, right?" Hiccup said.
My mom sent him a warm smile before exchanging a look with my father. "Indeed"
The sound of buzzing once again distracted me as I shoved what remained on my plate down my throat and stuffed the plate and cutlery I had used into the dishwasher.
"I really have to go now, see you later!" I yelled to my parents as I grabbed my jacket and ran outside to Eret, who was still standing patiently by his car.
"Took you long enough" He commented. I rolled my eyes at him before taking his hands in mine.
"My parents forced me to eat dinner first, sorry" I smiled at him.
"Well, you're here now. Ready to go?" I answered him with a nod as we both got into the car.
"Yeah, let's hit the ice"
