Chapter 1: I Run A Guy Over

The sound of chirping filled my ears as the sunlight hit my closed eyelids. I answered with a groan as I rolled over on my side to check the time on my phone. 7 am, as always.

I sat up in the bed, rubbed my eyes, kicked away the duvet and filled my lungs with the musty morning air in my room as I stretched my arms up towards the ceiling.

Today was the first day of the second semester of my junior year, and I was pumped to see my friends again. I hadn't seen my best friend, Heather, since Christmas. She had spent the entire Christmas break with her family at their cabin up north. I had been there twice and I'm pretty sure that the smell of pine was still sitting in the clothes that I wore up there.

One of my other friends, Ruffnut, had also been gone all of Christmas break. Ruffnut and her twin brother, Tuffnut, had been sent to their uncle Fenris because their parents were in desperate need of a break from their shenanigans, and believe me when I say this, there are a lot of them. For example on the last day before Christmas break, they had filled the pool at the school to the brim with outdated eggnog. As soon as the smell reached the classrooms, the whole school was evacuated, allowing us to leave even earlier than we were supposed to, so their pranks weren't always negative.

And then there was Eret, my boyfriend. Eret spent his break in the warmth. His every waking moment was spent practicing football or playing basketball with his father. You see, Eret comes from a proud family of great football players, and therefore he has been raised to live and breathe football, but as soon as he has scored the last touchdown of the season, he sets his focus on basketball.

Eret and I met on my first day of High School, he was a college sophomore, and I was a high school freshman. Yes, I know that 5 years is a pretty big age gap when you're my age, but age is just a number, right?

That day I had gone to get a coffee with Heather, to celebrate surviving our first day of high school. I remember having picked up the coffee from the counter before turning around and bumping into Eret, spilling the iced coffee all over his shirt. He didn't get mad though, oddly enough, he found it quite amusing. We kept in contact after that and eventually became good friends before he asked me out on a date. We went to the movies like the stereotypical kids we were, and shared our first kiss on a snow covered bench outside of the local Taco Bell after he had bought me a very spicy, but extremely good, taco.

We kept our relationship secret for a while, but became official about 5 months later.

"Astrid" My mother's voice echoed throughout the house. "Eret is here"

But what did my parents think about me dating a guy in college? Well, at first they were in shock, but as soon as they met him, they fell even harder for him than I did.

I rolled out of bed, threw on some jeans and a hoodie before stashing my phone in my back pocket and snatching the blue backpack that had been resting beside my desk, waiting patiently for the moment I would pick it up once again.

I threw the curtains that covered my window open, allowing the sunlight to fill my pastel blue room.

I rushed down the stairs, swung by the kitchen, picked up my lunch and said goodbye to my mother who was busy eating her breakfast at the kitchen table.

I ran out the front door to find Eret in our driveway, waiting for me inside his ruby red Honda that looked like it had just gotten a thorough cleaning done.

Luckily for me, Eret goes to Berk Community College, which means that he can pick me up and drive me to school every other day.

I went over and knocked on the window of the passenger side with the back of my fingers. He leaned over, opened the door and grinned at me like I was the one who had gotten him his precious car. I got in and fastened my seatbelt as we rolled of the driveway and onto the road.

His dark hair had been put up in a bun, making him look like he was on his way to the campus coffee shop -something he probably was after dropping me off. He wore a 70's style beige, wool-lined jacket over a white v-neck, making me wonder where his orange-tinted, gold rimmed sunglasses and mustache were.

Berk High was located on the opposite side of town from my neighborhood. The drive over there took about 14 minutes without traffic. Not that there was much traffic in Berk anyway.

The school was located in front of the thickest part of the forest that surrounded the town of Berk. The forest was also home to the smokers, drug dealers and addicts. Both teachers and students alike knew that it was best to stay away from that part of town.

The school building itself was nothing special. It was two story yellow brick building with white rimmed windows and a bright green double-door that served as its main entrance. In front of the school were two parking lots; one for the students and one for the teachers. As always, the student parking lot was filled to the brim with cars.

Eret pulled into the student parking lot and started his search for an empty spot, making him look like a predator hunting for its prey. The sudden need to be helpful washed over me, so I attempted to aid him in his search for a spot. Just as we rounded a swing, I caught a glimpse something in front of us.

"ERET, LOOK OUT!" I yelled an octave higher than usual. Eret reacted quickly, but not quick enough. Just as he shifted his entire body weight on the brake, the car collided the poor guy that had just been trying to pass the parking lot. My head was thrown backwards, and the seatbelt that was supposed to be of help, knocked the air out of me. I remained in my seat for a second, my body taken over by shock. I let my eyes wander out to the hood of the car, which had miraculously enough survived the impact of running that guy over. Running that guy over. RUNNING THAT GUY OVER!

"Oh my gods, I've got to go check on him!" I exclaimed as I sprung out of the car, not even giving Eret a chance to object. I made my way towards the front of the car faster than you could say 'peanut' and crouched down beside the guy we had just ran over.

"We're so sorry, are you alright?" I asked him as my brows knitted together.

The guy sat on the ground, his hand tightly grasping the messy, side swept auburn hair that sat on top his head. His eyes were shut, and his brows were turned downward, giving me the impression that he must've hit his head or suddenly gotten a terrible headache.

"Excuse me?" I asked him as I tried to get a better look of his face. "Do you need medical attention?"

He straightened up a bit, let go of his hair and slowly opened his eyes, revealing dull, emerald green irises. Minor freckles were spread across his cheeks, a pale little scar sat right below his bottom lip and behind his right ear hung two small braids. As I took in his facial features, a wave of recognition suddenly washed over me, but for some reason I could not put my finger on who this guy was.

He looked me up and down as if I had stepped on his brand new shoes.

He shook his head and slowly stood up as he brushed the dust off his black bomber jacket. "I'm fine, thanks"

I stared even harder at him. I was certain that I had met this guy before, I just could not remember his name for the life of me.

"Sorry, I didn't quite catch your name?" I said as I followed him out of the parking lot.

He turned around and raised one of his eyebrows at me. "If you don't remember me, then I see no point in sharing that information with you, seeing as you probably would just forget it again. Isn't that right, Astrid?"

I froze for a second, surprised that this guy I for some reason couldn't remember knew my name. Then I realized that he probably knew me for the same reason I knew him, but unfortunately for me, I could not remember what that reason was.

As he slipped in through the bright green doors, I was snapped back into reality. I quickly shook my head and followed him inside, hoping to get some answers, whilst leaving Eret to fend for himself in the parking lot.

I must've looked crazy, running all over the school like a mother that had lost her kid at the mall. I peeked in through the windows on every door until I spotted the bomber jacket he had been wearing earlier, hanging on the back of a chair in the library. I threw the doors open and walked in, letting my eyes wander all over until I caught a glimpse of his auburn hair behind a book shelf. Finally, I thought to myself.

I marched up to him, took a hold of his arm -which wasn't as scrawny as I imagined it to be- and spun him around so he faced me.

He let out a sigh. "You again? Are you following me or something?"

What felt like a jolt of electricity shot up my arm and I quickly let go of his arm. "What? No! I'm here because I want answers"

"To what?" He asked me as he shoved his hands into his pockets.

"To how you know my name!" I exclaimed, resulting in a loud 'shhh!' from the librarian.

He tapped his chin. "If I tell you, can you promise me that you'll leave me alone?"

I nodded.

"We went to elementary and middle school together, that's all" He informed me impatiently, as if all he wanted was to finish this conversation and get out of here as quickly as possible.

I knitted my brows together as I studied him closer, trying to make his name appear in my mind. "Gustav, is that you?"

He threw his hands up in despair, as if I had just insulted his entire existence. "Alright, now you have got to be kidding me!"

I shrugged. "Sorry, I'm really bad with names."

He let out a heavy sigh, before pushing past me and walking away.

"Hey! Where do you think you're going? This conversation isn't over!" I shouted after him, earning yet another 'shh!' from the librarian.

He snatched his jacket from the chair it had been hanging on before sending me a look that was filled with such disgust that I began wondering if I really had taken a shower last night.

"Can you at least tell me your name?"

He put in his shiny white earbuds and shook his head. "No"

There was only one thought that came to mind as he stepped out of the library. What the hell was that guy's problem?
