James has a ginger on top of him

James Sirius Potter sat at his desk grinning like an idiot and stared at the picture in his hands. This picture featured Lily Abotton. In his opinion, the most beautiful girl in the world grinned into the camera, her red hair surrounded the oval-shaped face and set the perfect contrast to her beautiful green eyes. James could watch her for hours and never get enough of her beauty. He used to think that the most beautiful thing in the whole universe were the stars, how they twinkled in competition, one brighter than the other. But now he knew Lily. He could still remember exactly how he saw the girl for the first time.

"James, come on now, or do you want the best stuff gone already?" Harry yelled through the Potters' house. He and Ginny were standing outside the front door already fully dressed. "I'll be right there dad, I have to fix my hair first, you never know who you might meet!" yelled eleven-year-old James downstairs. His father replied with amusement: "Who do you want to meet James? You're only eleven, don't stress, there will be the love of your life." James just rolled his eyes in annoyance and winked at his reflection one last time while hearing his mother reply "But Harry, remember when we met." Then he had to roll his eyes again.

Arrived in Diagon Alley, the Potters did their shopping as quickly as possible. Going shopping when you have the surname Potzer is harder and more exhausting than you can imagine, because despite all the decades that have passed since Harry defeated Voldemort, all witches and wizards still look at what the golden boy is up to and mean a smaltak by him having to lead about the "good old days". It was no different for his mother, aunt and uncles. Relaxed family activities are not that easy. This time they had almost managed to finish the list of James' school supplies, but just before the last shop they were stopped by old acquaintances. His mother silently hinted that it might be some time before his wand joined his books, robes, cauldrons, and pranksters. "Unless I take matters into my own hands." James thought to himself and said done he made his way to Olivanders alone.

Approaching the wand shop, he thought he spotted his cousin Fred in the crowd, but when he turned around and took a closer look, he realized the redhead was nowhere. Instead, he felt his body hitting something and he fell to the ground uncushioned and something soft but still heavy on top of him, probably a bag with cloaks, James thought, slightly dazed and with a throbbing temple. While hoping he didn't get a bump he noticed that something was stirring on him and smelling like vanilla and magnolia. IT SMELL OF VANILLA AND MAGNOLIA! James promptly opened his eyes and saw the most beautiful girl in the world slowly getting up, grumbling, and staring at him half indignantly, half curiously. There were a million things he could have said, starting with "Excuse me, are you alright?" followed by "I'm almost James, James Potter."

If he had said that, everything would probably have been different and she would have smiled at him, said that she was fine, asked him if everything was fine with him and also introduced herself. But instead he just said the first thing that came to his suddenly empty head, "You can't find one redhead and then you accidentally lay an even prettier one, today seems to be my lucky day. I'm James, James Potter." And so it came as it had to come: "What kind of an arrogant idiot are you," the redhead stated while she looked disgusted and started moving, moving away from him. When sorting into the houses, he found out that not only was her name Lily Abotton and she also became a Gryffindor, but that she still found him horrible, and that didn't change over the next few years. The better James found her, the more awful she found him. The more he asked her out, the more disgusted and annoyed she looked at him. The more he tried to be nice and mature, the meaner and more heartless she became.

But some things Lily Abotton and the stars definitely had in common, James was attracted to both, they blinded him and robbed him of his sleep but they were just as unreachable and trying to grab them would only burn James.
