He Knows
(Y/N POV)
"Give it back, it's mine!!"
"No, it's mine!!"
Though Betsey and Bonnie tried to rest, they scrambled about as Frances and Angelica furiously tugged the doll from each other's hands. Emily shrunk her body into a ball on the sofa, afraid that the dogs may accidentally crash into her. They were tamed hunting dogs, gentle to their masters, bloodthirsty to their prey. For once, it made me thankful that I was gifted the life of a human.
Junior sat on his rocking horse that he had dragged in from the nursery and swung himself back and forth in amusement of his two sisters. James was upstairs accompanying Eliza and Alexander, who I was only told was "preparing" for something.
"Y/N, tell her that it's mine!" squealed Angelica.
"No, it just looks like yours!" Frances proclaimed.
I tried to come up with a compromise. "Alright, well, what do both of yours look like?"
"The same!!" they groaned simultaneously.
"Pa got them the dolls when you were dead," Junior confessed, still rocking, "the same ones."
"Do you two store them seperately?" I directed back to the girls.
"We did until Angelica stole mine!!"
"I did not!"
"When did you last have it, Angelica?" I asked her.
"This morning! I sleep with her every night!"
"And you claim that that doll is yours, Frances?"
Frances hummed.
"Then where is it..." I glanced over at Junior, and just as you might expect, he'd put his head down. "Junior, do you know where Angelica's doll is?"
He murmured a short, "No...", and shook his head.
"Junior..."
"It's not my fault I wanted to play with it!" he exclaimed. "Pa never lets me play with dolls!"
I sighed. "Where is it, Junior?"
"...In my room..."
I nodded upwards, gesturing for him to go and fetch it. He rolled his eyes but did as asked.
Angelica and Frances skipped along behind and made the room silent. The dogs rested themselves onto the floor at last and Emily came out of her ball. It had been so chaotic that I hadn't noticed Philip sitting at the piano motionless. He didn't enjoy play as much as he used to and would rather be alone in his study. I couldn't tell him how he was putting his childhood to waste for he wouldn't listen. I wanted to engage him in activities but he was always reluctant. It made me wonder what was going on in his mind.
Flashing a smile at Emily, I made my way over to him and knelt down. "Is everything okay, Phil?"
He nodded.
"You know that you can talk to me whenever you'd like, right?"
He nodded again.
After a minute's wait, he started. "You'd teach me piano, besides Ma," he informed, "I wanted to be as great as you."
"There's nothing great about me," I chuckled, "but I know that there's something great about you. About Philip. You'll blow the world away, and don't you doubt that for one second. We're all here for you, and we're not going to leave you, Phil."
"What..." - He stopped himself - "So you say you're from... the future."
"Mmhm."
"So... What's going to happen to me?"
Every person who liked Hamilton were aware of what came of Philip. And it was a tragedy. I turned to Emily, but she didn't seem to be paying any mind, fiddling with her sleeves. I could not tell eight-year-old that he was going to be shot and killed in honour of his father, it would be simply too much for him. I had to give him hope.
And, when the time came, find some way out of it.
"Well," I began, "you'll enrol into King's College just like your father did."
"Really?" He smirked.
"Really! And you'll be one of their proudest members until the day that you graduate."
"What then?"
I tried to improvise as best I could. "You'll settle down in your field of work and become the greatest success that this country has ever seen. You'll marry and together with your wife share the most beautiful children who you will nurture into the best of husbands and wives."
He giggled, a childish giggle, one quite so that I had never heard from him. Once his smile had faded, he continued. "How will I die?"
Alexander stumbled into the room missing a shoe. He looked infuriated and Eliza followed behind to keep him from screaming. "Emily, dear, have you seen Alexander's shoe?"
Emily shook her head.
"Y/N? Philip?"
"No," both of us responded.
"I swear, it's those damn dogs," Alexander groaned.
"Language," Eliza warned.
"Oh! Well won't you look at that!!" At the entrance into the dining room, Alexander pointed at a torn-up shoe. He picked it up and stormed over to the dogs. "I wonder who did that, huh?!!"
Bonnie cowered.
He took off his other shoe, now on the hunt to find a different pair. "Where is he going?" I asked.
"To a meeting with Mr. Jefferson and Mr. Madison," Eliza answered.
"What about?"
"He would not tell me. It seems to be their business and only theirs."
"...Huh."
A knock at the door. Gertrude (Alexander's hired house maid) was the first to open it. I ruffled Philip's hair and followed Eliza to the door, curious to who it was. "Good afternoon," the familiar voice of Jefferson arose, "Is Mr. Hamilton present?"
"Yes, be mindful of him, he has lost his shoes," Eliza told him.
"I see."
"I'll get him on his way. Gertrude, accompany James in the nursery. Feel free to come inside, Mr. Jefferson!"
Eliza fled into the dining room and Gertrude returned upstairs, leaving me with Jefferson. He glared at me, a sickening glare. "I saw you those couple of months ago at the cabinet," he stated, "and there is something about you. Something... strange."
I flickered my eyes back and forth. "I... don't understand, Sir."
"Oh you understand, I am more than certain." He leaned down to better meet my face. "And when I find out, I'll make sure that the whole of New York City knows."
"I don't know what you m- mean, Sir, I-"
"Don't test me, girl," he warned. "I can see through that disguise of yours. And that blonde your brought along with you. I've read the papers and it's no coincidence that you two came the same time after those two 'Hamilton' sisters disappeared." He stood back up to his full posture. "I've got my eye on you."
"Mr. Jefferson-!" Wrestling his shoe on, Alexander resorted to the door.
"Hamilton." Eliza opened up the door for them.
"Shall we get going, then?"
"We shall."
Taking one final glance at me, the two men departed into the carriage set outside for them which also held Madison inside. With the door finally closed, I held myself up against the wall.
He was onto us.
