Cabinet Battle
(Y/N POV)
"Here we are." Washington sat at the left hand side of the table, gesturing for Alexander to take a seat beside him. Following this, Alexander pulled out a chair next to his, offering it to me.
"Thank you." As I sat, Jefferson and Madison took their place on Washington's other side. Men flooded in at once, all inspecting me carefully. Why is a woman here?, some would ask, whilst others would consider, why is the crossdresser here?.
It was all I was known for. I felt guilt carrying the title. Occasionally, people about the streets would tease and taunt me with "Charlie!" or "Miller!". It was a rarity that I was praised for what I did. Washington advised me to hold it as a badge of honour but it was hard to when all that came my way was mockery. There was no escaping it; I made a decision years ago and now I must pay for the consequences of it.
Nevertheless, Jefferson glared in my direction. Even he had heard of me and he had been living in France for over nine years. Who else knew? Maybe the entire world knew by now. I just wished that I had the voice to speak out and tell them that I was young and made a mistake. What I now, at twenty-six years, consider a mistake. I was foolish in every action and yet nobody could understand that because I was not a man. And Jefferson dared to challenge me for that fact, too.
So far, I despised him.
"Gentlemen!" Washington exclaimed. I leapt my body up in startlement for I had not suspected such a sudden exposition. "Welcome to one of our first cabinet meetings! As you hopefully should know, I am General George Washington." he introduced. "To my left here, we have Secretary of the Treasury, General Alexander Hamilton." Alexander grinned in fondness of his title. "And to my right, we have Secretary of the State, Mr Thomas Jefferson.
Gentlemen, Vice President John Adams sends his regards. He won't be joining us, he had to be home in Massachusetts for family reasons."
"Tell him to stay home!" Madison exclaimed.
"He can do the same amount from there!" Alexander added in. To my knowledge, the majority of men in close relation to Alexander were also the enemy of Adams. He was highly disliked for his lack of participation in social events, such as this. How he was elected Vice President I failed to understand.
"Alright, alright, settle down!" Washington hushed. "The issue we have here at the table is Secretary Hamilton's plan to assume states' debts and establish a national bank. Now, would anyone like t-"
"If I may, Mr President." Jefferson stood up, glancing skeptically at Alexander. "I don't know if Secretary Hamilton is aware of this, but having a federal government assume states' debts would only strengthen the power of the federal government."
"Oh I am fully aware, Sir." Alexander responded.
"...Quite. To me, Sir, that sounds rather... egotistical. Self-indulgent. Making a federal government responsible for our nation’s financial future only vests more power in the Department of Treasury. Which, may I point out, is the very department Hamilton is the head of."
Alexander frowned. "I'm sorry, sir, are you deriding me?"
"A state's debts, Mr Hamilton, should be their very own responsibility to pay off. One state should not bare another's failings!"
"You are saying that I am only doing this for power, Mr Jefferson?"
"It is unlikely that you will do anything, sir, for you see, Mr President, banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies! We need a nation that does not need to be tormented by the threat of inevitable debt, and that, Sir, is what I believe that Mr Hamilton will establish."
The room began to mutter between themselves. "Thank you, Secretary Jefferson." Jefferson claimed his seat back with pride; I noticed Alexander's look of discontent. His ideas were not the greatest, but in a moment so dire, I felt no reason to let him down.
"Mr President, if I may-"
"Sophie, sit down." Alexander grunted.
"Miss Hamilt--"
"Consider the establishment of the National Bank and the assumption of the state's debts as two separate initiatives, Mr Jefferson. Both work as equals to strengthen the financial identity of this nation. Of this country. That is what you always said, is it not? That "all men are created equal"? If equality is what you desire, Sir, then why shan't you allow it? A federal government would single us out from foreign parties."
Alexander raised his eyebrows and chuckled. Although it wasn't from the amusement of my words. It was from the impression that I seemed to make on the men. They looked from side-to-side in a complete state of awe.
"Tell me, Mr Jefferson," I continued, "how did you contribute to the war?"
Jefferson hesitated. "I had business in France, Miss."
"Business." I scoffed. "So whilst you watched from the sidelines, I filled in as your substitute. You should be ashamed of yourself, Sir. Whilst I went out there and got myself shot in the chest for this nation, a nation which you have been chosen to participate in taking the lead of, you were getting pissed with the Fr--"
"Alright, that's enough, thank you, Miss Hamilton!" Washington pardoned me. I slouched back down upon my chair. "...I think we will reconvene after a quick recess. The both of you," -Washington signalled to Alexander and I- "a word."
Washington and Alexander lead the way out, leaving me face-to-face with Jefferson and Madison. "You are certainly Hamilton's niece." Jefferson admitted. "Can't hold your tongue."
I brushed him away, trailing after the two men.
Washington closed the door and rubbed his temples. "You need to pull yourselves together."
Alexander tried to hide a smirk.
"That includes you, Hamilton."
"I'm sorry, Sir, but every word that she said was true!" he confessed. "This Virginians, they're-"
"Watch your mouth." Washington warned. "All we need is the votes."
"No, we need this plan!"
"The only way to do that is if we convince them." I agreed with Washington.
"And not ridicule them." he warned me.
"...I'm sorry, Sir, I was overwhelmed."
"Don't do it again, Sophie, if there is ever an again.
And Alexander? Figure it out. That's an order from your commander."
~
"How did it go?" Eliza wondered, kindly taking my coat.
"Not so great..." I sighed.
"Oh?"
"We didn't win the votes." Alexander collapsed down onto the couch.
"Oh, dear, I'm so sorry-!"
"Sophie!!" Emily flung herself down the stairs and into the sitting room. She waved a letter around in the air.
"What is it?" I questioned.
Her face was panting, submerged in misery, fear and confusion all at once.
"It's a letter..." she exhaled.
"It's a letter...
From the King."
