Brothers Reunited (Reprise)
(Y/N POV)
We brought ourselves out of the carriage with our heads down, still cautious that we would be taunted if anybody spotted us. I took Emily and placed her in front of me so that she would reach our home first, the door kindly opened by Gertrude.
Eliza followed after us and we entered untouched. All of the children came from the playroom to greet us, especially James, who excitedly toddled over to his mother. Frances and Angelica wrapped their arms around her; Philip leaned in to her side; Junior stood alone at the doorway.
I wandered over to him and crouched down. 'Everything's going to be alright now.'
He glanced over at Emily but then proceeded to toss his arms around me. 'Can we go outside now?'
I chuckled. 'I hope so, yes.'
'Is Pa coming back?'
My answer was postponed by an eager knock at the door to which Gertrude immediately answered. By some odd coincidence, Alexander appeared with a face that dripped with sweat. His green jacket hung over his arm, leaving his waistcoat exposed.
'DADDY!' Angelica was the first to pounce over to him, proceeded by Junior. Clinging to Eliza's shoulder as she held him, James gave a thrilling screech upon seeing his father for the first time in a month. Whilst Alexander appeared delighted to see them again, his face was directed at Eliza who was obviously displeased at his unexpected arrival.
'Forgive me, but... we need to have a word,' he panted.
'At this current time?' Eliza growled.
'It's... It's important, please.'
She sighed. 'It had better be.'
He passed Gertrude without handing over his jacket. Eliza put James on to the floor to which he almost instantly ran over and tried to tackle Junior to the floor. Alexander took Eliza by the shoulder and led her upstairs. He murmured quietly, and though I tried to listen in (a common practice for me, it seemed), what he was saying was inaudible.
After Angelica had guided her little brother away, suddenly Junior was happier than ever. He galloped over to Emily and took her hand. 'Are you going to come downstairs more now?' He began leading her off to the playroom.
'Erm - maybe.'
'Good, because I want to show you something I made.'
'What?'
'It's a drawing of us all falling from the sky. I made you look really pretty, you'll like it!'
'O-oh - um - okay.'
With Frances following after them and Gertrude making her way over to the kitchen, it was only me and Philip that were left. He took a deep breath in, unable to look in my direction.
'Everything alright, Phil?' I asked.
'Yes, I just -' He paused briefly, and then from nowhere lunged forward and hugged me. 'I thought you might - you might not have -'
'There's nothing left to worry about,' I soothed him.
'But who's to say that people won't still be out for you?'
'And why do you have to worry about that?'
'Because I'm the oldest son so I have to worry.'
'You're a kid.'
'And so are you,' - He scanned me up and down - 'at least I think you are. Now, anyway.'
I smiled. 'You have much bigger things to worry about.'
'Like what?'
'Boarding school, for a start.'
'I don't care about that,' he scoffed.
'Yeah, yeah, sure you don't.'
Just as I was leading him off to the playroom, we were, once again, interrupted. This was not the fierce knock that Alexander had done, more of a hard slam. With my awareness that Gertrude was busy in the kitchen and my instincts to keep the children safe kicking in, I hesitantly scrambled over to open it. If I didn't, I was afraid that whoever this was would break the door down by force.
I darted out of the way to avoid it smashing into my face as the individual stormed inside. As I glared upwards to his angered face, I noticed the odd similarities in appearance that he shared with Alexander.
'WHERE IS HE, GODAMNIT?!' he screeched. I looked back and saw that Philip had fled elsewhere. Turning back, he was now staring right at me. Terrified that he would leap at me, I backed off; he did not, nonetheless, but his scowl grew darker. 'Oh, it's you.'
Both of us at once distracted by the opening of the door at the top of the stairs, the man bolted for it. 'HAMILTON!!'
In alarm, I hurdled myself closer to the staircase to examine whatever was going on, just barely catching Eliza as she dived out of the way of the man. He took Alexander by his cravat, backed him into the office and held him against the desk.
'DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO ME?!' he yelled.
I could see Alexander waving his hands around in the air. 'This was not the reunion that I'd expected, I'll admit -!'
'YOU'VE RUINED ME!' he cut in on Alexander. 'YOU'VE RUINED MY LIFE! TELL ME WHY YOU THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A FANTASTIC IDEA TO SAY IT WAS I WHO -'
'I had no other choice, I had to do something -!'
'SO YOU USED ME?!'
'Alexander -!' Eliza called out.
'Not to worry, love, just a friendly welcome from some old family!' he responded promptly. 'Can we not settle this as men?'
'Oh, so now you want to be a man, Hamilton, now. I have always despised you for your pretentiousness, but when I was informed of my involvement in that - Does it look as though I wish to be involved in your life?!'
'Please, un-hand him!' begged Eliza.
Though disinclined, the man released. 'You have married into a sick family, Ma'am, and I pity you so.'
'Who are you, what is your name?'
Alexander cleared his throat and came forward, adjusting his cravat back into place. 'My brother, James.'
'Your husband, Ma'am, made the statement in that document of his that I was the father of that brat!' James pointed outwards to me, making them aware of my attendance here.
'Y/N, dear -!' Eliza hurriedly made her way down to accompany me.
Meanwhile, James took a crumpled up sheet of paper from his pocket. 'I took this specific page from the document, one that was given to me by a friend. Mind if I read it out?' He smirked towards Alexander, awaiting no further response and holding the sheet in front of him.
'"A court of law took its place circa March of 1776. Within were contenders of law to whom I were apprehensive about their findings of Y/N L/N's identity", etcetera, etceteta... Oh, here we have it. "I forced my falsehood and deception upon the court, and in doing so, declared my dear brother - Mr. James Hamilton - father of the child. For long, I have had no contact with him,' - James chuckled at this - 'and henceforth found it suitable to assign his name to it." Here's where it gets good. "I fabricated his death in the war, along with that of his family, to spare this child her life. For the years proliferating to this moment (1791), I dissimulated Y/N L/N's uncle and played out the passing of my brother."'
Here, James stopped to look around. 'Could you believe that?' he questioned. 'I had folk come to me for days convinced that I was associated with witchcraft. Then I was given this, and you bet that I sailed that ocean to get here and confront these claims.'
'And you have every right to confront,' Alexander tried to defend but was silenced by James raising his fist in a threatening manner, leading Alexander to flinch.
Eliza had supported her hand on my back. 'Well - we'll be having dinner soon, Mr. Hamilton,' she illuminated, 'perhaps you could join us and the two of you talk your business after our meal?'
James scowled at his brother who, for once, did not argue back and shunned himself away.
'That would be delightful, Mrs. Hamilton,' he grunted, still staring at Alexander.
'I can hardly wait.'
